We, the parish of Saints Mary and Mathias Catholic Church, WELCOME all to CELEBRATE, TEACH and LIVE the Mission of JESUS CHRIST Ss. Mary & Mathias Church 215 W. 8th St. Muscatine, IA 52761 From the Pastors Desk September 8th, 2019 As we have already tran- sitioned back into our fall routines of school, extra- curricular activities, and the like, I am sure many of us are once again run- ning in a million different directions just trying to keep up with our more than busy schedules. I have to confess that I had one of those more than busy days this past week where I was running from one commitment to another meeting to yet another commitment followed by yet another meeting. All I wanted at the end of it all was just a bit of breathing room, just a bit of time and space to regroup and recharge my batteries. God wants to give us a life of joy, peace, and content- ment. He wants to give us breathing room. Breathing room is having space for relationships. It is having time in our schedule so we are not constantly running from event to event. Breathing room is having enough in our budgets to save and give. Breathing room is having enough margin to breath. However, our culture constant- ly pushes against breathing room and if we aren’t careful we pretty quickly find ourselves without breathing room. In this series we will look at how we can regain a little breathing room in our lives. After all, to be a committed disciple of Jesus requires breathing room. It requires us to balance our lives in such a way that we can enjoy and live in an intentional way sharing the generous gifts that God has given to us. Breathing room helps us to be better disciples of Je- sus and better stewards of the gifts God has bestowed upon us. This fall, we are making an effort to focus more of our energy on learning to live the stewardship way of life. We will be taking a closer look at the US Bishops’ Document on Stewardship, “Stewardship: A Disciple’s Response.” A summary of this document can be found at: http://www.usccb.org/beliefs-and-teachings/what-we- believe/stewardship/index.cfm. From the Pastors Desk September 8th, 2019 As we have already tran-

sitioned back into our fall

routines of school, extra-

curricular activities, and

the like, I am sure many

of us are once again run-

ning in a million different

directions just trying to

keep up with our more than busy schedules. I have to

confess that I had one of those more than busy days this

past week where I was running from one commitment to

another meeting to yet another commitment followed by

yet another meeting. All I wanted at the end of it all was

just a bit of breathing room, just a bit of time and space

to regroup and recharge my batteries.

God wants to give us a life of joy, peace, and content-

ment. He wants to give us breathing room. Breathing

room is having space for relationships. It is having time in

our schedule so we are not constantly running from

event to event. Breathing room is having enough in our

budgets to save and give. Breathing room is having

enough margin to breath. However, our culture constant-

ly pushes against breathing room and if we aren’t careful

we pretty quickly find ourselves without breathing room.

In this series we will look at how we can regain a little

breathing room in our lives.

After all, to be a committed disciple of Jesus requires

breathing room. It requires us to balance our lives in

such a way that we can enjoy and live in an intentional

way sharing the generous gifts that God has given to

us. Breathing room helps us to be better disciples of Je-

sus and better stewards of the gifts God has bestowed

upon us.

This fall, we are making an effort to focus more of our

energy on learning to live the stewardship way of

life. We will be taking a closer look at the US Bishops’

Document on Stewardship, “Stewardship: A Disciple’s

Response.” A summary of this document can be found at:

(continued from page 1) By gaining a bit more breathing room, we can more gen-

erously offer God our time in prayer as we cultivate a deeper relationship with the

Lord. We can come to discover the God given gifts and talents we have been

blessed with in order to fulfill God’s particular mission or plan for us. Finally, by

generously giving of our financial treasure to God and His Church, we can experi-

ence the true freedom of living as generous and faith filled disciples of the Lord.

On behalf of myself and the youth of the parish, I'd like to thank the many people who supported our first ever youth ministry golf outing. The many contributions whether through hole sponsorship, auction item

donations and your presence at the event helped us raise over $7500.00 for our parish youth ministry program. These funds will help provide activities that will draw young people closer to the heart of Je-sus. We are so blessed to have a parish community that cherishes its young disciples. I'd also like to thank the Birdies with Bishop planning committee, without them this event would not have been possible. Thank you all and may god bless you and your families. Yours in Christ, Tommy Fallon, Director of Youth/Young Adult Ministry

Saint Don Bosco Award 2019 Congratulations to Patricia (Pat) Phillips on receiving our parishes first ever Saint Don Bosco award. Pat received the award in recognition and thanks for her faithful service and selfless love to the youth of our community. Pat has volunteered 20+ years in youth ministry and reli-gious education. Thank you and congratulations Pat! "It is not enough to love the youth, they must know they are loved." - St. Don Bosco
