Isaiah 2:1-5 Romans 13:11-14 Matthew 24:37-44

Dear members of St Mary, Millions of Americans are still in shock with the presidential election results. Many supported Mr. Trump for legitimate policy reasons. We all owe him our respect and prayers. I am one of many Americans and people throughout the world who are fearful. I am fearful for this simple reason: I see in the president-elect no discernible spiritual depth. I don’t see that innate goodness that guides most people in decisions that affect others. I am worried that, lacking that, his vision and policies could cause much suffering for vulnerable people. Lots of us here at St. Mary are feeling this. How to respond as a parish? I suggest we go back to the basics we first learned in Catechism. First, we will respect one another. There are no good vs. bad people, just people, all of us flawed and seeing only a part of the big picture. No one is irredeemable or beyond God’s grace. We renounce any kind of violence, whether by action, words or even thoughts. Second, we will help the poor. Not just those struggling economically that come to St. Joseph’s Family Center and the Lord’s Table, but those vulnerable members of our community that are undocumented immigrants. We proclaim basic human rights to things like education, health care and physical security. Third, we will stay together. There is a lot of work to do (still) in connecting ministries and ethnic groups and those of us who worship in English vs. Spanish. We are all the Body of Christ in his many parts but recognizing each other takes time. These are things we can practice here at St. Mary over the next months and years. They are basic to being a Catholic Christian family. I hope I am wrong about Mr. Trump, and that he will turn out to be a compassionate and effective leader. In the meantime may we, through God’s grace, be a healing and hopeful presence for fearful hearts.

Some people hear Pro Life and think of only one part. Maybe it’s abortion. Maybe it’s the death penalty. Both of these actions are clearly anti-life. What doesn’t often come into the conversation is how the people involved in a particular situation got there. How did that woman or couple come to consider aborting the creation of their love? How did that guy land on death row? Does either of them have families? Other children? Parents? Brothers & Sisters? As John Donne said, “No man is an island.” We are all connected and usually many steps lead us to our present condition. Right now, we can support couples who choose life for their babies. Our diocese has a layette program that offers material support to young families. On December 4th, we’ll hold our annual Layette Celebration. You can support by attending, by donating layette items, or by donating money to support the program. All donations may be given to me or to the office, attention Rose. You can keep your generosity local, too. Saint Joseph Family Center (SJFC ) also provides layettes to families with new babies. They also need baby clothes and volunteer help for these layettes. Donations of baby clothes, newborn to 2T are most needed and welcome. Diapers are also most gratefully received. You may deliver donations or volunteer at SJFC, 7950 Church St, 408.842.6662. Let’s help the holidays be cheerful for those who have less than we do. Let’s support life after birth as well as before.
