2015 Archbishop’s Annual Appeal

The Archbishop’s Annual Appeal is carried out every year from January to December to raise funds for the support of many of its operations, some of which directly benefit our parish. A goal is set each year for every parish based on a certain percentage of the previous year’s income. The goal set for St. Paul of the Cross for the 2015 Archbishop’s Annual Appeal is $38,300.00. If the combined pledges of individual parishioners/families do not match this goal, the parish as a whole becomes responsible for the balance of the payment. On Commitment weekend, February 7-8, 2015, please pledge according to both your conscience and to your means. As Catholics we are called to support not only our own parish church but also the Archdiocesan and Universal Churches, for we are all one body sharing the same Life, caring responsibly for one another.

The PARISH ASSEMBLY

Originally scheduled for this Sunday, January 25th,

the Parish Assembly

has been postponed until Sunday, February 22nd.—the

First Sunday of Lent. Be sure to mark your calendars.

My dear Parishioners,

With this Sunday, we arrive at the first day of February; the

day itself dedicated in a special way to prayer for the Afri-

can American and African Family, and the month dedicated

to Black History. Even though we have recently observed a

whole month dedicated to Black Catholic History, it is well

for us to take time to reflect on and celebrate Black History — something so rich and rewarding for both the older and

the younger generations.

Today, I want to share some thoughts with you about the

importance of family life and the threats that imperil its

health. First of all, the family is the basic unit of society and

Christians are called to consider their families “domestic

churches.” If anything worthwhile is to happen in the church

and in this world, it has to begin in the family, for it is here

that the heart of civilization beats.

Wholesome family life is terribly threatened here in the

United States, which is not to exclude the rest of the world.

But we live here and must look after our own house before

setting out to help our neighbors repair and strengthen theirs.

Among the more devastating threats to healthy family life is

individualism because it strikes at the heart of the common good. We can easily recognize this illness in others but self

recognition is often elusive. A family member who concen-

trates too much on self fails to contribute his or her share

toward the wellbeing of the others. Whereas the considerate

and reliable family member stands as a solid pillar support-

ing a structure of charity, harmony and peace. It takes faith

and courage to consistently resist the temptation to focus on

self. But look around, and you will find abundant evidence

of this throughoutj our faith community.

One of the joys of serving St. Paul of the Cross Parish is that

of being with families who treasure one another. Let us pray

today that all our families, young and old, will never lose

that precious gift. - Fr. Jerome, C.P.

New Congregational Hymnal

for a New Year!

The 2nd Edition of Lead Me Guide Me hymnal is now in use. Please note that

we are following a new procedure with the new hymnals. As you enter the church, you will be given your hymnal by a Minister of Hospitality and you are asked to return your hymnal to a Minister of Hospitality before you depart the church. No hymnals are to be left in the pews . This may take a bit of an adjustment, but our intention is to safeguard the hymnals and maintain them in good condition. Your cooperation is essential and appreciated. On the front inside page of the hymnal, you will find a label indicating the person or persons to whose memory or in whose honor that hymnal has been dedicated as well as the name of the donor. May we suggest that you offer a prayer for those persons? The Worship Commission spearheaded the purchase of our new hymnals

as part of our commemoration of the 60th anniversary of the parish. If

you have not yet donated a hymnal you may still do so by

contacting a member of the Worship Commission or a Minister of

Hospitality. The donation for each hymnal is $20. We are grateful to all who have supported this worthy cause.

REMEMBER IN YOUR PRAYERS,

ONE MAN’S EXPERIENCE!

“Although my wife and I are both involved in various min-

istries at our parish, we are usually on separate tracks.

Since we found ourselves in the same small community I

have noticed a difference in our sharing at home. We are

each reading Scripture more and very naturally discussing

this with each other as well as within our group at our weekly session. I never thought it would make a differ-

ence in our lives but I’m finding it has. I encourage you to

join a small community this Lent and enter into the faith

sharing on Lenten Longings. I believe that once a week

for six weeks will be well worth your effort.”

To sign up, fill out your registration card found on the

LENTEN LONGINGS table at the rear of the church.

Don’t put it off — sign up it today!

CONSECRATED LIFE

From the beginning of the Church, there have been men and

women who have chosen to live in a radical witness to

Christ by imitating him as closely as possible in his poverty,

chastity, and obedience. In the course of the centuries, this

commitment became more and more visible through the

establishment of monasteries, religious orders and congrega-tions, and other types of institutes. Men and women pro-

fessed publicly evangelical “counsels” (vows) of poverty,

chastity, and obedience and committed themselves to stabil-

ity of life within communities. The priests and brothers

who have served St. Paul of the Cross parishioners for the

past 60 years are members of the religious community

known as the Passionist Congregation, founded in 1720.

sinagoga a enseñar.
