The Jews questioned, “how can this man give us his flesh to

eat?” Some times our faith and knowledge of the Eucharist

(the body and blood of Christ) is distorted by this question

raised by the Jews at their time before the death and resurrec-

tion of Christ. So we think erroneously that the discourse on

the Eucharist was some symbolical way of talking by Jesus.

No! It is not. Thus Christ insisted that, “I tell you most sol-

emnly, if you do not eat the flesh of the Son of Man…you

will not have life in you”. Christ uses comparison to show the

Jews and us the Christians of today, that his flesh and blood

is not just mere food and drink like any ordinary bread (food)

which the Israelites eat in the desert or we eat at home or res-

taurants today and still die and go to hell. His flesh and blood

give eternal life. His flesh is more important not just in the

spiritual sense, but in the physical sense too. John Henry Car-

dinal Newman in one of his hymns on the Eucharist ‘O Bread

of Heaven beneath this vail’; say, “How can he deny me

heaven, who here on earth himself had given’. Ones we eat

his flesh and drink his blood (i.e. the Eucharist) Christ him-

self says, “… I shall raise him on the last day”.

May the Body and Blood of Christ strengthen us in our so-

journing back to Him in heaven.
