IAESTE en la Universidad de Málaga L.C. Málaga Málaga 2012 WELCOME TO MÁLAGA We are very happy to welcome you as a trainee in Málaga. The reception team will try to make your stay in this crazy city as interesting as possible. You will see that this location is an exciting one with almost every possibility you can imagine. We think that trainee exchange is one of the best ways to promote understanding between people of different nationalities. Take advantage of your chance to become acquainted with Andalucía and trainees from all over the world. This welcome package informs you about everything you need to know for your preparation for Málaga. We’re looking forward to the time with you! Most of this stuff is very important so please read carefully! Málaga, like a seductive lady from Andalucía. Discreetly positioned a the centre of the Costa del Sol, the town has retained its highly unique character. In Malaga, as all over Andalucía, life takes place on the street. The year round mild climate encourages the delightful custom of "promenading" which, again reflects the social, agreeable nature of the people. Winter and summer here are, in reality, autumn and spring elsewhere in the world. Such seasons make the town an easy place to live, eat and enjoy as well as adding to its dynamism and appeal. On a more serious note, the city is also an important centre of administration in the business and financial world. The streets of the historic centre preserve an age old ambience and reflect the vitality of a modern town. To fully appreciate all this area has to offer, it is necessary to spend several hours exploring the tiny backstreets which still are distinctly Moorish in character, contemplate the many churches and monasteries, stop for a coffee or a fino in a typical bar or perhaps purchase some "biznagas" (small bouquets of fresh jasmine) or vist the Casa de la Guardia for a sip of "pajarete"; a wine which is a virtual national symbol and generally served with a tapa, such as mussels and shrimps. Also, if you want to be informed about all the events and talk with other Málaga IAESTE students you have to join to our group on Facebook: “IAESTE Summer Malaga 2012” http://www.facebook.com/groups/103868486414653/

1. HOW TO GET TO MALAGA No matter how you get here, there will be one of our students waiting for you at the airport / station. There are several ways to get to Malaga:

Malaga - Pablo Ruiz Picasso Airport (AGP): This airport was named after the famous painter, who was born in the city. It has many connections with Europe and some with other countries, and it’s the 3rd most important airport in Spain. Buying a flight ticket from your home country to Malaga may be the easiest way to come, but in some cases, not the cheapest one.

o When you arrive at the airport you can take a bus or a train to go to

city center (the taxi is very expensive, from 20-40€, but it´s your only option if you arrive after 0.00):

I. Bus Express Airport (Line A)

• Itinerary: Airport - Avenida de Velázquez - Héroe de Sostoa (Railway station) - Héroe de Sostoa - Avenida Andalucía - Alameda Principal - Paseo del Parque.

• Airport Stop: Terminal 3, arrivals forecourt road, opposite the transportation hub.

• Frequency: About each 30 min from 7:00 to 0:00 • Price: 2€

II. Train Line: Malaga - Fuengirola

• Itinerary: Airport - Guadalhorce - Victoria Kent - María Zambrano railway station - Alameda Principal (Puente de Tetuán)

• Airport Stop: New suburban train station opposite Terminal 3

• Frequency: About each 20 min from 6:54 to 23:54 • Price: 1,60€

Madrid - Barajas Airport (MAD): The airport in Madrid is the most

important in Spain, so you may find out the ticket to Madrid is way cheaper than the one to Malaga. In this case, you can choose to fly to Madrid and use an alternative way of transport from there to Malaga, for example:

○ Train: Visit http://www.renfe.com/ ○ Bus: Visit http://www.daibus.es/ or http://www.alsa.es/

2. PUBLIC TRANSPORT Malaga is a big city, and since it’s “trapped” between the sea and the mountains, its shape is very long. Public transport is probably your best option to move around, because taxis are not cheap. Almost all buses stop at “Alameda Principal”, a famous street in the center of the city. 2.1. What bus should I take? . You can use this application

When you get here, you will meet a lot of new people, or maybe you want to contact your family and friends in your country. Therefore, we recommend you to unlock your cell phone, if you have a locked one, and get a local number. The unlocking may be easier for you in your country, but if you don’t unlock it before coming, you can make it in this shop:

 Movilquick - Avda. De La Aurora, 51. P.C. 29006 Málaga - http://www.movilquick.net/tiendas/malaga/

When getting a new number, we suggest to bypass the main companies (Orange, Movistar…), as they are more expensive. Normally, you will spend from a few weeks to a few months here in Malaga, so it will be cheaper if you get a SIM card from OMVs. These are virtual companies, operating through internet, and they offer the cheapest fares for your calls and texts.

in the website: http://www.pepephone.com/ > Tarifas > Internacionales > Select Continent and Country > You will find the fares. These international fares are usually very expensive so we recommend using Skype as an alternative.

Anyway, if you want the traditional companies, here you have the four main ones operating in Spain: http://www.movistar.es/ http://www.vodafone.es/particulares/es http://www.yoigo.com/ http://www.orange.es/ 4. ELECTRICITY The electric network in Spain works at 230 V and 50 Hz. If you come from a country with different voltage or frequency, we strongly recommend you to check any device before plugging it. Usually there is a sticker in the charger with the valid range of operation: If it says “110-230 V, 50-60 Hz”, it’s ok to plug it. So if your devices have a different one, you will need to buy an adaptor. You can buy an high quality adapter at any hardware or electronics store. In the city center you can find several hardware store like:

° El Compas C/ Martínez, 8 (near Alameda Principal) 10:00 - 20:30 ° El Llavín C/ Santa María, 15 10:00 - 20:30

Sockets in Spain only take plugs with 2 round pins
