CATHOLIC CHURCH AND SCHOOL Saint Pius X parish: www.spxcc.org school: www.stpiusxschoolcc.org Welcome to St. Pius X Parish July 6, 2014 Fourteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time “To renew all things in Christ” Dear Friends, To accept God is one thing. To submit to him is another thing altogether. It is not rare to hear someone say, “I don’t need to go to church. I pray to God in my own way and in my own home.” “Besides”, such a person says, “The church is full of hypocrites!” When I hear this last statement, I typically respond, “Thank God the church is full of hypocrites! In fact, we are all hypocrites! Hopefully, that’s why we go to church . . . so we can learn to be less hypocritical!” This kind of scenario causes us question what is the real reason a person stays away from church? The other thing we ponder is why anyone would not see a need for God in his or her life? The answer usually lies in the fact that many people do believe in God, they just don’t want to accept what belief in God entails. It requires an authentic change of heart and a change of behavior. One thing that is common to all of us is that we struggle with pride. Our arrogance keeps us from discovering the riches that come with submitting ourselves to God and to the kind of life that he calls us to lead. There are certain conditions for living life in the Church. In order to make the move from dependence on self to submitting to God’s rule in our lives, we must become childlike. In other words, we must humble ourselves. God desires that we know him and love him. Paradoxically, this God who wants us to know him has hidden himself from the proud and arrogant. He does not reveal himself to the “wise and the learned” as Jesus says in the gospel. By no means does this suggest that God does not reveal himself to those who are intelligent and educated. God is supremely rational and many great saints were the most brilliant minds that ever lived. However, those who are arrogant in their use of their intelligence – who think they are beyond belief in a supernatural being, or who in their arrogance, somehow feel that they know better than God – are impeded from truly knowing God. In other words, those who rely on their own wits are the ones who somehow seem to be blinded to that personal and intimate knowledge of God. They think they know, but they don’t. It is the meek and humble – the childlike – who really see and know and understand God. They see him because they have their eyes clear and open to see. They are not blinded by the fog of their own pride. That is why those who have been knocked down by their pride are able to see God. In their humiliation, they begin to have the fog removed from their vision, which leads them to suddenly surrender. Then, in their child-like condition, they begin to submit themselves to God’s direction, seeing that what they have been trying to do on their own has gotten them nowhere. I see it over and over again. A person who has been away from the church has a crisis in life and suddenly, they return to church to seek God again. In their recognition of their sheer helplessness or dependency, they start to catch a glimpse of God’s presence in their lives. So often, we try to tailor the Gospel to our own whims. We want to pick and chose that in which we wish to participate. We try to find the easiest way or the way of minimal effort. In the end, we find ourselves convinced 50 Years of Faith

Dear Friends,

To accept God is one thing. Hopefully, that’s why we go to church . . . so we can learn to be less hypocritical!”

This kind of scenario causes us question what is the real reason a person stays away from church?

In the end, we find ourselves convinced

we are close to God, when in reality we are alienated from him. Those who stay away from church do not realize that God calls Christians to live in a community. To isolate oneself from the community is not Christian living at all.

To be childlike is to submit to one’s dependence upon God. To be childlike also means to submit to the rule of life that God has set before us to follow. This is the yoke that Jesus refers to in the last section of the Gospel. When we embrace whatever requirements that life presents to us, we find the burden to be light. When we do things the way Jesus wants us to do them, we will find that he is right there carrying the load with us, lightening that burden. Let’s not let arrogance blind us. Instead, let us be like the merest children – embracing challenges and seeing with eyes wide open. God bless!

A Primer in Church Etiquette at MassIt is good to be reminded often of how to preserve reverence and respect for Our

Lord and to actively participate in mind, heart, and body in the Sacred Liurgy, in which the saving mysteries of the Passion, Death, and Resurrection of Jesus Christ are made present. At Mass and other church visits . . .

1) Please be sure to turn off or silence cell phones and other electronic devices2) Keep a respectful silence in the presence of Jesus in the Eucharist before and

after Mass3) Remember to wear appropriate clothing and modest dress, even with warmer

weather upon us. This helps express with our bodies that what is taking place is extraordinary, and helps others to see you with dignity

4) Please no food or drink, except in case of true need (such as baby bottles and water, or other medical reasons)

5) Be courteous of others who would like to pray6) Remember not to chew gum out of respect for God’s house and to maintain the

proper fast before Communion.7) Avoid chatting, texting, or viewing emails during Mass.8) Refrain from listening to iPods, or other digital music devices while in church.9) Come on time to avoid distraction and do not leave early after Communion or

before the final blessing.10) Participate in the Mass with you whole body, mind, and spirit by singing,

responding, and praying with focused attention. All of these will help you to develop in faith, love, and appreciation for the greatest gift

we have, the Eucharist!

Prayer for RainAll good gifts come from You, O Lord:The breath of life that create us,The follow creatures that accompany us,The saving waters that renew and refresh us.We look to you in our time of need.Give to the earth the waters of life,Water to bring forth food for your creatures.Send us rain to heal the earthAnd to cleanse her face,Water to quench your thirsty land.Let faith be born from our doubts, hope from our despair,And compassion from our troubles.Let the rains come,So we may know once moreYour loving care for us and your creation. Then we will bless your great nameAnd declare your faithful love.We ask this through Christ our Lord. Amen

How “poor” is your spirit? To be “poor in spirit” conjures up images of

people who are depressed or down-hearted with little or no spiritual life. In fact, people who live this beatitude are spiritual giants fully aware of their absolute need for God and live with complete dependence upon

him. In that way, they grow stronger through their trials and personal crosses. When we live this beatitude we are most likely living the other seven, too.

Happy to live in union with God. Poor in spirit means that we depend upon God for all our needs and we are happy to live our lives joined to him. Someone who lives in union with God knows that there is nothing the world has to offer that can compare.

Happy to be secure with God. Poor economy, bad health, loneliness, insecurity in an imperfect world can rob us of safety and happiness in the world. Yet, when we rely on God for what we need, nothing can steal the joy or happiness that he provides. Nothing.

VACATION BIBLE SCHOOL WAS A HUGE SUCCESS!

The VBS program that we followed made us aware of the needs of others. We discovered that clean water is not a common thing in India. We also discovered that it would cost $2.50 for one child to have clean water for one year. So we filled up our giving well with donations. We collected $360 for the project. Our donations will give clean water to 144 children in India. Thanks to all of the VBS children and their parents who responded to this important need.

One minute meditations

St. Joachim and St. Anne What we know of these two

saints comes from tradition. We know that they were Jesus’ grandparents and that they raised Mary, Jesus’ mother. We also know that they were faithful Jews who raised their daughter in a devout Jewish home. Her unshakeable faith, her devotion to the laws of her religion, her comfort with being mother and wife, and her steadiness in moments of crisis indicate the values with which she was raised.

Remember …Jesus gave us a great gift when he created the

Sacrament of Confession (John 20:23). He knew we would want to hear the words of absolution to know he forgives us. Remember that no matter what happens, you are just one Confession away from coming home.

Begin to change“Yesterday is gone. Tomorrow has not yet come.

We have only today. Let us begin.” Blessed Teresa of Calcutta
