MANISTEE The students of todayare the leaders of tomorrow.

The West Michigan D League princi-pals are firm believers in that philosophyand it is rare to find a conference that isso committed to giving more to its stu-dents beyond the realm of athletic compe-tition. On Nov. 30, the league sponsoredthe second West Michigan D LeagueSummit at the St. Joseph Parish Center

in Manistee. It is a program to show thestudents good role models from theircommunities who exhibit good leadershipqualities.

This is the second year that we havedone this, and all the schools from theWest Michigan D League send two stu-dents from the 7th to 11th grade levels, said Manistee Catholic Central principalJan Bigalke.

Schools that sent student represen-tatives to the day-long summit wereOnekama, Bear Lake, Brethren, ManisteeCatholic, Big Rapids Crossroads CharterAcademy, Pentwater, Walkerville andBaldwin.

    Brethren principal Marlen Cordes said

it is a concept that all the principals in the

league embraced. He added that the stu-dents who are selected to represent theirschools are picked because some specificqualities.

Bob Gendron, the Pentwater prin-cipal, came from a conference that haddone this, and they did it with the leadersin their school, said Cordes. Our teach-ers nominated students and we chose theones that were good leaders.

Bigalke agreed saying she used thesame procedure in selecting the studentsfrom Manistee Catholic Central.

I sent an email to all of my teachersfor students that had the potential to beleaders, said Bigalke. It wasnt based ongrades, as we wanted students who were

ready to jump to the next level and takethe lead.Onekama Schools principal Gina

Hagen said that she feels the summit willreally benefit her students. She said itwill help them grow as a person, and isan added component to the educationalprocess.

It is an opportunity for the studentsto enhance their leadership skills to beused for the future, and for the rest oftheir life, said Hagen.

Bear Lake principal Marci Augensteinsaid she used a similar system of selec-tion. She added a discussion amongsther, and the teachers picked the final

candidates. She said theones that were selected aregood candidates to go backand spread the word to therest of the students at BearLake Schools.

It was definitely theteachers that did the nomi-nations, said Augenstein.I would say that these arekids that have that poten-tial to go back with whatthey learned today and

share it with the other kids. They are strong kids whohave leadership qualities. This opportunity may workto encourage that, andbring some of it out morefrequently.

Serving as keynotespeaker of the event wasBaldwin School Boardpresident Joe Brooks ofBrooks Construction. Hegave an informative talk tothe students that kept theirattention. Brooks talkedgenerally about leadershipand touched on a greatdeal of things from his

own experiences, stressingthe point that they can dothose types of things. Itreally brought it down to alevel where they could eas-ily understand it.

Brooks went to collegeat Princeton University, and stressed to the stu-dents that you can comefrom a small communityand be successful. He toldthe students at the timehe might have been afraidto take that step from asmall town at the time, ifhe didnt know what he did

about Ivy League schools. He really set the tonefor the day, and empha-sized that when you startsomething you should fin-ish it, said Cordes.

Augenstein said Brooksalso told the students aboutan interesting connectionfrom his days at Princeton.

His roomate in collegedated Michelle Obama fora time and he talked a littlebit about his connections. He used a lot of quotes thatwere the characteristics ofa leader.

    Following that the

students broke out intofour different groupsthat rotated to differ-ent stations. Servingas presenters in thosebreak-out sessions wereMason-Lake IntermediateSchool District Directorof Technology TomJohnson, Manistee Alliancefor Economic SuccessExecutive Director CyndyFuller, Michigan StatePolice trooper Greg Hubersand Pentwater business-man Pat Shinn.

They touched on vari-ous topics all dealing withleadership, and how to be asuccessful leader.

Big Rapids CrossroadsCharter Academy princi-pal Ross Meads said thesummit is one of the waysstudents from the confer-ence can get together ina different manner fromwhere they usually meet onthe the athletic field. Theleague also holds a AAAbanquet in the spring torecognize students foracademics, athletics andattitude.

    I think one of the

things I like about thisis the West Michigan DLeague is more than athlet-ics, said Meads. This isfor some of the other kidsthat show leadership andthat is how we honor theother kids that are leaders.Today its not about beinga foe, but being a friend.

    LESSONS IN LIFESTATEPOINT MEDIA

The world is changing and par-ents need to make sure their chil-dren are prepared to succeed in anincreasingly globalized economy, sayexperts.

The United States is often regard-ed as a melting pot, a place for peo-ple of different backgrounds to come

together and ultimately grow alike. But the truth is that from language tofood to religious practice, unique cul-tural traditions are all around us.

We must not try to erase dif-ferences but rather respect them, even celebrate them, says RajivMalhotra, author of the new book,Being Different: An IndianChallenge to Western Universalism(HarperCollins Publishers). Malhotrabelieves we can look to India as anexample of a distinct society thatpeacefully integrates many diversepeople.

Alongside reading, writing andarithmetic, cultural diversity should

be at the forefront of your childrenslesson plan. But dont just encouragetolerance. Go a step further.

    Tolerance is a patronizing pos-

ture, says Malhotra, We need tolearn to respect, even appreciate andnot merely tolerate religious and cul-tural differences.

Here are some tips to teach chil-dren to respect one another as theybecome citizens of the world:

n Absorbing the nuances of asecond language is easiest when oneis young, so sign your kids up for a

language class at an early age. Betteryet, learn along with them.

n Pack your bags and take a trip.Dust off your passport or keep itdomestic. Even within the UnitedStates, there is great opportunity tobe exposed to new cultural experi-ences.n Think differently. There are

fundamental differences between theWestern worldview and the Easternworldview, say scholars. People fromdifferent countries have different tra-ditions, religious customs and histo-ries that shape their thinking. Beingaccepting of others means openingyour mind to the idea that there are

different approaches to resolving theproblems impacting our complexworld.

n Read a book. You dont need to

be a globetrotter to learn about othercultures. Your local librarian canhelp you find age-appropriate booksthat will introduce children to othercultures and allow them to explorethem deeply. For example, India hasa rich history and culture that goesbeyond the Western embrace of spicyfoods, yoga and meditation.n Encourage friendships. Enroll

your children in activities, camps andprograms that foster relationshipswith kids of all religious, racial andeconomic backgrounds.n Engage in a substantive dia-

logue with others that explores newideas about the world beyond yourbackyard. Question your values andbe open to seeing the merit in theideas of others, suggests Malhotra, who founded the Infinity Foundationto encourage better East-West rela-tions. For more information abouthis new book visit www.beingdiffer-entbook.com.n Host a potluck. Invite your

friends over and have them bring

dishes featuring their family recipes. You may find your circle of friendsis more culturally diverse than youthought.

    Teaching children to accept others

    Courtesy Photo/Monkey Business-Fotolia.com

By investing the time to teach these lessons, you can contribute toward making schools and communities asafer place for your kids.

    STATEPOINT MEDIA

College no longer is justa rich learning ground, buta prerequisite to many oftodays jobs.

With this in mind, par-ents increasingly are looking

to send their children tocollege or go back to schoolthemselves. And theres nobetter time than the presentto talk to your family aboutyour or your childrens col-lege dreams.

The transition to post-secondary education can bedifficult for even the mostprepared families, saidSharon Darling, president& founder of the NationalCouncil of Family Literacy(NCFL). We need to ensurethat more nontraditionaladults are prepared to enterand succeed in postsecond-ary education and thatparents are well prepared toinform and nurture the edu-cational aspirations of theirchildren.

Explore Your OptionsIts never too early for

children to start thinkingabout a future career -- ortoo late for grown-ups toconsider a different career.

Make a list of what youor your child likes to doand brainstorm potentialcareers that match thoseskills and interests. Thenexplore books about careers,

preferably with your chil-dren. Preschoolers maylike Career Day by AnneRockwell or Caring forYour Pets: A Book AboutVeterinarians by AnnOwen.

For elementary kids, tryreading Career Ideas forKids Who Like Science by

Diane Lindsey and LindseyClasen and other books inthis series. And you canengage your teen in explor-ing careers with If YouCould Be Anything, WhatWould You Be? A TeensGuide to Mapping Out theFuture by Jeanne Webster.

Make it a Family GoalOne way to ensure that

dreams come true is to setgoals and implement thesteps to achieve them. Butsome long-term goals, likebuying a house or getting acollege degree, take manysmaller steps before you canaccomplish them. Feelingsupported by family whileachieving smaller goals canhelp build confidence so thateventually, the larger goal isreached.

Families should also takeadvantage of free resources.

    For example, NCFL has

released multi-mediaresources to help peopleunfamiliar with navigatingthe U.S. college system gainaccess to the informationnecessary for preparing andsucceeding in college.

    Get InvolvedWhen parents are

involved with their chil-drens school and in theireducational experiences, their kids are more success-ful -- not only in school,

but in life. Develop a rela-tionship with your childsteacher, ask questions whenyou dont understand whatis expected of your child, and talk to your child everyday about school.

Get your kids thinking about college
