OPEN STAGE AREA. PROLOGUE - DANCE OPENING

The Jets enter on the first music. After them the Sharks. We

feel the tension. After a while the Sharks, who gets chased

off stage. Left are RIFF and the Jets.

1. SCENE 1

Consuelo makes a gesture (vafan...) to Riff as she exits.

RIFFThe road, little lady, the road.

[In a moment of bravado, just before she goes, Anybodys spits-

but cautiously.]

Round out!

[This is Riff's summoning the Jets, and they surround him.]

We fought hard for this territory

and it's ours. If we don‘t protect

it they will snatch it from right

under our noses and take it away.

Unless we fight!

 ANYBODY

[eagerly]A rumble! [A jabbing gesture.]

Chung! Chung!

 RIFF

Cool, Anybody. The Sharks want a

place, too, and they are tough.

 ANYBODY

So are we!

I'm only sayin' we gotta be pre-

pared. Now what's your mood?

DIESEL

I say go, go!!

   ANYBODY

Me too!

 DIESEL

I say go get them!

What do you say, Riff?

 RIFF

I say if they want a fight, they‘ll

get a fight! I want the Jets to be

Number One! I‘ll tell Bernardo at

the dance!

DIESEL

Then let‘s do it.

[A punching gesture.]

Voom-va voom!

 ACTION

Chung chung!

   ANYBODY

Cracko, jacko!

 SNOW

2. THE JET SONG

RIFF

[He sings:]

When you're a Jet,

You're a Jet all the way

From your first cigarette

To your last dyin' day.

When you're a Jet,

If the spit hits the fan,

You got brothers around,

You're a family man!

You're never alone,

You're never disconnected!

You're home with your own:

When company's expected,

You're well protected!

Then you are set

With a capital J,Which you'll never forget

Till they cart you away.

When you're a Jet,

You stay

A Jet!

  TONY

When you're a Jet,

You're the top cat in town,

You're the gold-metal kid

With the heavyweight crown!

DIESEL/CLARICE

When you're a Jet,

You're the swingin'est thing.

Little boy, you're a man;

Little man, you're a king!

RIFF

The Jets are in gear,

Our cylinders are clickin'!

TONY

The Sharks'll steer clear

'Cause ev'ry Puerto Rican

'S a lousy chicken!

 ALL

Here come the Jets

Like a bat out of hell-

Someone gets in our way,

Someone don't feel so well.

Here come the Jets:

Little world, step aside!

Better go underground,

Better run, better hide.

We're drawin' the line,

So keep your noses hidden!

We're hangin' a sign,

Says "Visitors forbidden"-

And we ain't kiddin'!

Here come the Jets,

Yeah! An' we're gonna beat

Ev'ry last buggin' gang

On the whole buggin' street!

On the whole

Ever-! Mother-! Lovin'-!Street!

Jets Exit

3. SCENE „AMERICA“

 Anita enters with Bernardo.

 ANITA

What do you mean a fight?

BERNARDO

Don‘t worry about it.

 ANITA

I‘m not! But, why do you always have

to fight?

BERNARDOBecause they do! Look. We have just

as much right to live here as the

Americans. So if we have to fight

for it, we will. It‘s the American

 way!

 ANITA

Oh is it now? And what about danc-

ing? That‘s the American way too.

BERNARDOYou can dance as much as you want

to, let me take care of the fight-

ing. You know how important it is!

It would be much better to go back

home. HOME TO PUERTO-RICO!

the Puerto-Rican‘s enter. AMERICA Scene

 ANITA

Puerto-Rico? This is home now! Amer-

ica is home now!

BERNARDO

And why is that? Because you have a

 washing-machine now?

 ANITA

Well, in Puerto-Rico we had nothing.

BERNARDO

We had the family the sunset, the

beauty. Is that nothing!?

  6

Page 8: West Side Story - Script - Maggio 2014

 ANITA

I don‘t know about you, but I can‘t

eat beauty or sunset. Maybe you can,

so why don‘t you go back then?

BERNARDO

I‘ve had enough of this America.

We‘re going home!

 ANITA

Maybe you are, but I‘m staying here.

BERNARDO [TO CHINO]

Back home, women know their place.

 ANITA

Back home, little boys don't have

 war councils.

  BERNARDO

You want me to be an American? [To

the boys.] Vámonos, chicos, Es

tarde. [A mock bow.] Buenos noches,

 Anita Josefina del Carmen,

etcetera, etcetera, etcetera.[He exits with the boys.]

  ROSALIA

That's a very pretty name: Etcetera.

   ANITA

 Ai!

  CONSUELO

She means well.

  ROSALIA

We have many names at home.

   ANITA [MIMICKING]

At home, at home. If it's so nice

"at home," why don't you go

back there?

SONG

  ROSALIA

I would like t, just for a shortvisit.

[She sings nostalgically:]

Puerto Rico...

You lovely island...

Island of tropical breezes.

BERNARDO

Always the pineapples growing,

Always the coffee blossoms blow-

ing...

   ANITA

Puerto Rico...

You ugly island...

Island of tropic diseases.

Always the hurricanes blowing,

Always the population growing...

CONSUELO

And the money owing,And the babies crying,

And the bullets flying.

 ANITA

I like the island Manhattan-

Smoke on your pipe and put that in!

[all, except Rosalia:]

An immigrant goes to America,

Many hellos in America;

Nobody knows in AmericaPuerto Rico's in America.

[The girls whistle and dace.]

(Dance Break)

ROSALIA

When I will go back to San Juan?

  CONSUELO

When you will shut up and get gone.

Everyone exits. Tony enters, followed by Riff.He is „working“

putting crates of bottles up against a wall.

4. „COULD BE“

RIFF

Tony we need you. It‘s really impor-

tant.

TONY

What is is this time?

RIFF

The Sharks are taking over, man. We

have to draw the line and we need

you to do it.

TONY

I can‘t. I‘m working. And I already

had an incident yesterday.

RIFF

Incident. What do you mean?

TONY

I bumped into a friend of Bernar-

do‘s. He started to get really ag-

gressive and...

  9

Page 11: West Side Story - Script - Maggio 2014

 RIFF

 And...?

TONY

Well, It was dark. But Diesel hithim.

RIFF

Bernardo!!??

RIFF

No Bernardos friend. I don‘t know

his name but... Diesel hit him hard.

We left and I don‘t know what hap-

pened. Bernardo was really upset. He

screamed at me as we left.

RIFF

You mean at Diesel.

TONY

No me.

RIFF

Hi thought it was you!?

TONYWhat?

RIFF

Maybe he thought it was you who hit

his friend and not Diesel!

TONY

Maybe.

RIFF

Yes maybe! You know Bernardo as wellas I. If he thinks it was you, he‘s

gonna come after you.

TONY

I don‘t know...

  10

RIFF

What‘s with you lately?

TONYNothing. I just can‘t. Besides...

RIFF

Besides what?

TONY

You wouldn‘t understand.

RIFF

Try me?

TONY

I don‘t know. But, every night I lay

awake with the feeling that some-

thing is going to happen. I don‘t

know what it is, but it‘s coming.

RIFF

I think I understand.

(he sings)

Could be!...

Who knows?...

There's something due any day;

I will know right away,

Soon as it shows.

TONY

It may come cannon-balling down thru

the sky, Gleam in its eye,

Bright as a rose!

RIFF

Who knows?...

TONY

It's only just out of reach,

Down the block, on a beach,

Maybe tonight...

Who knows?

11

It's only just out of reach,

Down the block, on a beach,

Under a tree.

I got a feeling there's a miracledue,

Gonna come true,

Coming to me!

Could it be? Yes, it could.

Something's coming, something good,

If I can wait!

Something's coming, I don't know

what it is,But it is

Gonna be great!

With a click, with a shock,

Phone'll jingle, door'll knock,

Open the latch!

Something's coming, don't know when,

but it's soon;

Catch the moon,One-handed catch!

Around the corner,

Or whistling down the river,

Come on, deliver

To me!

Will it be? Yes, it will.

Maybe just by holding still,

It'll be there!

Come on, something, come on in,

don't be shy,

Meet a guy,

Pull up a chair!

The air is humming,

And something great is coming!

Who knows?

It's only just out of reach,

Down the block, on a beach,

Maybe tonight . . .

Maybe tonight . . .

Maybe tonight . . .

Towards the end of the song Riff exits, Maria walks through

the room with Gina. Maria glances at Tony and gives him a

smile. Gina sees this and explodes.

Hey! Wait a second.

MARIA

Yes...

TONY...Cold evening huh?

MARIA

Yes, it‘s a little cold...

GINA

Maria? (Pulling her away)

MARIA

...Okay then... we have to go. (as

she‘s leaving with Gina)

Don‘t catch a cold.

TONY

I won‘t. You too... I mean, you

too...don‘t catch a cold. (right be-

fore Maria leaves) Hey! (Maria turns

to him)

MARIA

Yes.

TONY

What‘s your name?

MARIA

Maria.

TONY

I‘m Tony. Actually Anton, but every-

one calls me Tony.

  13

MARIA

Good night Anton.

Tony exits.

BERNARDO

...You know who it was!

CHINO

The tall guy. Tony, right?

BERNARDO

Yes exactly!

Bernardo hands Chino a gun.

BERNARDO

Here, you know what to do...

CHINO

Yes I do.

BERNARDO

Good. But don‘t tell anyone. Espe-

cially not Anita. Okay?

CHINO

Okay.

Bernardo and Chino exit. Maria and Gina Enter.

GINA

But he‘s an American Maria.

MARIA

What does it matter what he is!?

GINA

It matters a lot!

  14

MARIA

You‘re just like the rest of them.(sarcastic) You are a Puerto Rican,

you have to marry a Puerto Rican.

Anita enters. Hearing what Maria says.

 ANITA

Exactly! By Gina.

GINA

 what?

 ANITA

By Gina. (Gestures for her to go)

GINA

Oh, of course. By...

Gina exits. (cue music)

5. A BOY LIKE THAT

 ANITA

Maria! He‘s one of them!

[She sings bitterly.]

A boy like that who'd kill your

brother,

Forget that boy and find another,

One of your own kind-

Stick to your own kind!

A boy like that will give you sor-

row-

You'll meet another boy tomorrow!

One of your own kind,

Stick to your own kind!

A boy who kills cannot love,

A boy who kills has no heart.

And he's the boy who gets your love

And gets your heart-Very smart, Maria, very smart!

  MARIA

It isn't true, not for me,

It is true for you, not for me,

I hear your words-

And in my head

I know they're smart

you should know better!

You were in love-or so you said.

You should know better...

Maria and ANITA exits. Tony re-enters.

6. „MARIA“

TONY

The most beautiful sound I ever

heard.

Maria, Maria, Maria, Maria...

All the beautiful words of the world

in a single word:

Maria, Maria, Maria, Maria...

Maria!

I've just met a girl named Maria,

And suddenly that name

Will never be the same

To me.

Maria!

I've just kissed a girl named Maria,And suddenly I've found

Maria!

Say it loud and there's music play-

ing-Say it soft and it's almost like

 praying-

Maria...

I'll never stop saying

Maria!

The most beautiful sound I ever

heard.

Maria

I've just met a girl named Maria,

And suddenly that name

Will never be the same

To me.

Maria-

I've just kissed a girl named Maria,

And suddenly I've found

How wonderful a sound

Can be!

Maria-Say it loud and there's music play-

ing-

 praying-

Maria-

I'll never stop saying Maria!

The most beautiful sound I ever

heard-

Maria.

Tony exits. Bernardo and Chino enter.

BERNARDO

...You know who it was!

CHINO

The tall guy. Tony, right?

Yes exactly!

Bernardo hands Chino a gun.

Yes I do.

BERNARDO

Good. But don‘t tell anyone. Espe-

cially not Anita. Okay?

CHINO

Okay.

Bernardo and Chino exit. Maria runs in, followed by her fri-

ends. They‘re laughing and having fun. Maria‘s friends are

trying to find out who she‘s in love with. Because it‘s ob-

vious she‘s in love.

7. „I FEEL PRETTY“

MARIA (SINGS)

I feel pretty,

Oh so pretty,

I feel pretty and witty and bright,

And I pity Any girl who isn't me to-

night.

I feel charming,

Oh so charming,

It's alarming how charming I feel,

And so pretty That I hardly can be-

lieve I'm real.

See the pretty girl in that mirrorthere:

Who can that attractive girl be?

18

And entrancing,

Feel like running and dancing for

joy,

For I'm loved

By a pretty wonderful boy!

ROSALIA, CONSUELO, GINA, PAULINE

The craziest girl on the block?

GINA

You'll know her the minute you see

her,

ROSALIA, CONSUELO, GINA, PAULINE

She's the one who is in an advanced

state of shock.

PAULINE, ROSALIA She thinks she's in love.

She thinks she's in Spain.

CONSUELO, GINA

She isn't in love,

She's merely insane.

PAULINE

It must be the heat

CONSUELOOr some rare disease,

GINA

Or too much to eat

ROSALIA

Or maybe it's fleas.

19

ROSALIA, CONSUELO, GINA, PAULINE

Keep away from her,

Send for Chino!

This is not the Maria we know!

PAULINE, ROSALIA

Modest and pure,

Polite and refined,

CONSUELO, GINA

Well-bred and mature,

ROSALIA, CONSUELO, GINA, PAULINE

And out of her mind!

PAULINE

Miss America (laughing)

8. MAMBO

Everyone enters for the MAMBO

Towards the end of the choreography. Maria and Tony approaches

each other mid stage. The cast foes into slowmotion)

TONY

I felt, I knew something-never-

before was going to happen, had to

happen. But this is-

  MARIA [interrupting]

My hands are cold. [He takes them in

his.] Yours, too. [He moves

her hand to his face.] So warm. [She moves his hands to her

face.]

  TONY

Yours, too.

  MARIA

But of course. They are the same.

  TONY

It's so much to believe-you're notjoking me?

  20

Page 22: West Side Story - Script - Maggio 2014

  MARIA

I have not yet learned how to joke

that way. I think now I never

 will.

They kiss.

CHINO comes into view. He pulls out a gun and shoots Tony mid-

stage. The music stops, everyone is shocked. MARIA runs to

him. And moves back into a half circle surrounding the two.

She kneels down and puts Tonys head in her lap. Everyone backs

into a wide half circle around Tony and Maria.

MARIA

No! Chino, what have you done?

(to Tony) I won‘t leave you.

I never will. We will always be to-

gether.

TONY

Not here. They will never leave us

alone.

MARIA Then we‘ll get away from here.

Maria sings accapella

Hold my hand and we're halfway

there.

Hold my hand and I'll take you

there,

Someday,

Somehow...

[He has started to join in on the second line. She sings

harder, as though to urge him back to life, but his voice fal-

ters and he barely finishes the line. She sings on, a phrase

or two more, then stops, his body quiet in her arms. A moment,

and then, as she gently rests Tony on the floor.

Lightly, MARIA brushes Tony's lips with her fingers. Behind

her, Diesel, in font of a group of Jets, moves to lead them

toward Chino. Maria speaks, her voice cold, sharp.]

  21

MARIA

Stay back.

[walks to Chino and holds out her hand. He hands her the gun.

She speaks again, in a flat, hard voice.]

MARIA

How do you fire this gun, Chino?

Just by pulling this little

trigger?

[She points it at him suddenly; he draws back. She has

all of them in front of her now, as she holds the gun out and

her voice gets stronger with anger and savage rage.]

MARIA How many bullets are left, Chino? Enough for you? [Pointing at

another.] And you? [At Diesel.] All of you? WE ALL KILLED HIM;

and my brother and Riff. I, too. I CAN KILL NOW BECAUSE I HATE

NOW.

[She has been pointing the gun wildly, and they have all been

drawing back. Now, again, she holds it straight out at Die-

sel.]

MARIA How many can I kill, Chino? How many-and still have one bullet

left for me?

[Both hands on the gun, she breaks into tears, hurls the gun

away and sinks to the ground. She kisses Tony gently. Music

starts as the two Jets and two Sharks lift up Tony's body and

start to carry him out. The others, boys and girls, fall in

behind to make a procession, the procession makes its way

across the stage. At last, she gets up and, despite the tearson her face, lifts her head proudly, and triumphantly turns to

follow the others. Clarice steps forward and starts singing.

9. SOMEWHERE

 CLARICE

There's a place for us,

Somewhere a place for us.

Peace and quiet and open air

Wait for us

Somewhere.
