Welcome to our 2017 season. And what an exciting time it is for Compton Verney! Our Welcome Centre and Chapel are open, our Park Restoration Project continues apace, and we are offering the widest range of exhibitions and activities – in both the galleries and the park – we have ever staged.
Our exhibition programme begins in March with the fabulous show Creating the Countryside, which uses our spectacular landscape as a starting-point for a thoughtful and entertaining examination of the way we have depicted and mythologised the English countryside from the Georgian era to the present day.
March also sees the installation of our first, Heritage Lottery-funded ‘eyecatcher’ – a contemporary work (entitled The Clearing) which reinterprets the Georgian tradition of parkland eyecatchers in a distinctively contemporary vein – encouraging us to imagine a world without technology. Do come and take part in its absorbing activities!
In the permanent collections we will be showcasing a wholly new selection from our fabulous loaned collection of British Portrait Miniatures. And we will be returning not only Michael Dahl’s 300-year-old Verney family portraits but also John Riley’s impressive portrait of the 11th Lord Willoughby de Broke, which also once hung in the house, to the former Morning Room – which during 2017 will metamorphose into a Victorian Women’s Library.

Compton Verney’s 2017 season opens with a major exhibition examining the rural idyll past and present.
In an increasingly urbanised world, the idea of the countryside as a restorative place of escape shapes the popular image of rural life and landscape. Creating the Countryside explores the roots of these associations and how they are reflected in the world around us.
Works by artists including John Constable, Thomas Gainsborough and George Stubbs are joined by contemporary pieces from artists including Grayson Perry, Mat Collishaw, Anna Fox and Alison Goldfrapp to present fresh perspectives on the notion of our ‘green and pleasant land’.
The exhibition also features new work by Delaine Le Bas, Rebecca Chesney, Sigrid Holmwood and Hilary Jack.

An opportunity to tour the exhibition with curators Verity Elson and Dr Rosemary Shirley, followed by informal discussion over tea and cake.
Landscapes in the WeatherThur 4 May, 2.30pm – 3.30pm
Alexandra Harris, author of Weatherland: Writers and Artists under English Skies, will look at changing tastes in weather across centuries, from medieval spring-songs to the limpid skies of eighteenth-century watercolours and the thunderous conditions sought out by those in search of the sublime. This talk will be followed by a book signing.
Constable’s CountrysideThur 1 June, 2.30pm – 3.30pm
Join Professor Michael Rosenthal, one of the foremost experts on eighteenth-century art, for an enlightening talk on the work of John Constable, exploring the artist’s transformation of the genre of landscape painting and his legacy in shaping the enduring popular image of the English countryside.

A vision of the future
The Clearing is a collaborative artwork by artists Alex Hartley and Tom James, which sets out to build a vision of the future in the grounds of Compton Verney. The project will create an evolving encampment, on the shores of the lake, where people can come together to learn how to live in a world afflicted by climate change. Occupied by volunteer caretakers, and hosting a series of workshops across the year, the project will become part school, part shelter and part folly.

Learn what to burn , where to find it and, importantly, how to light it using pre-industrial technologies including flint and steel and a giant bow-drill. Tom James and Matt Cox will teach you all you need to know.
Drink the Water Sat 1 April, 11am – 4pm
Where will our water come from in the future? Ariana Jordao from the Centre for Alternative Technology will teach you how to build a working water filter from easily sourced and abundant materials.
Build a ToiletSat 15 April, 11am – 4pm
How to deal with human waste? A must for any would-be survivor, learn how to build a compost toilet: a simple, easy and safe device that will help to avoid cholera outbreaks, and, as a bonus, create fertiliser for the fields.
Food Part 1: Finding It Sat 29 April, 11am – 4pm
Discover easy-to-identify edibles in the grounds of Compton Verney with local forager John Noble as well as how to catch a rabbit (no rabbits will be harmed in the making of this workshop).

What will we grow in the future? This workshop will introduce the principles of permaculture, and include a hands on planting session.

The Clearing Workshops
Workshop places limited, please pre-book. Suitable for ages 10+. Please bring lunch to share with fellow workshop attendees. Subsidised by the Heritage Lottery Fund.
Learn the skills you’ll need to survive in a world afflicted by climate change. Led by a series of experts, and accompanied by artist Tom James, the workshops will cover everything from basic survival skills through to re-thinking some of the technologies of our current society.

Flights of Fancy Wed 19 April, 12 noon and 2.30pm
Flights of Fancy tells the tale of a baby Glovebird learning to fly, while the earthbound puppeteer and stick-in-the-mud musician attempt to get the show off the ground. Anything is possible in this menagerie of the imagination, where we meet varieties of Glovebirds who sing, balance and unicycle, and even a flying pig!

Farrow & Ball Talk: Colour in the HomeThur 27 April, 2pm – 4.30pm
‘Colour in the Home’ is an inspirational talk on how to transform your home, hosted by International Colour Consultant to Farrow & Ball, Joa Studholme. See colour in a whole new light with this illustrated and informal talk, explaining how, through the simple use of colour, you can achieve striking results, both inside and outside your home. Joa will offer advice on how to approach decorating as well as developing your knowledge of colour families and both interior and exterior paint finishes. The talk will be followed by refreshments and a visit to our exhibition, Creating the Countryside.

Hosted in association with the Alzheimer’s Society on the second Tuesday of every month, the Café provides a supportive environment where those with dementia and their carers can share experiences, chat with others in a similar situation, and take part in a variety of activities including crafts, ‘singing for the brain’ exercises and learning hand massage techniques.

Parkland Tour First Thursday of every month, 1.30pm – 2.30pm
Our Head of Landscape & Gardens, Gary Webb, takes you on a tour to look at the development and present day management of our ‘Capability’ Brown Grade II* listed landscape. Discover the historic trees, delightful plantations and all manner of flora and fauna. You will learn about how the landscape has been used through the ages, and how we manage this important local wildlife site which is host to rare bats and a significant badger community.

Learn new skills in these monthly classes that will improve your confidence and ability to draw. Classes take place in the galleries or outdoors in the park and are a great way to relax, learn and make new friends.
British Portrait MiniaturesNew Display for 2017
A collection of exquisite miniatures has been generously loaned to Compton Verney by the Dumas Egerton Trust Collection for the next four years, many of which have never previously been on display to the public. A selection of these can be seen in our British Portraits Gallery and each year we will display a new group.
The focus for this year’s display is women artists, which links with our newly-interpreted Women’s Library and the bicentenary of the death of Jane Austen. Miniatures hold a pre-eminent place in the history of women’s art in Britain. By most accounts, the first two female artists working in Britain were Flemish miniaturists working at the Tudor court, and a work by one of these, Teerlinc, is part of this year’s display.
These intimate items were not intended for exhibition on a wall: they were generally worn on the body, often as a locket suspended from a necklace, as a brooch or as a wrist bracelet. Frequently given as gifts, their portability enabled them to be carried from place to place as keepsakes or mementoes.

Un-Silencing the Library
In June we will launch our much-anticipated re-interpretation of the Victorian Women’s Library, originally installed by Georgiana, the wife of the 17th Lord Willoughby de Broke in the mansion’s Morning Room c.1860.
Georgiana was a enthusiastic advocate of women’s reading and education, and her library is a very rare surviving example. The project has been developed in collaboration with the Department of English at Oxford University who will invite curators as diverse as Emma Watson and a prison reading group to curate a set of shelves in the room for one year.

Seurat to Riley:The Art of Perception

From the Impressionists onwards, artists have been inspired by historical and contemporary colour theories. This exhibition takes visitors on a stimulating journey that looks at the ways in which our visual perception have been explored by artists up to the present day. The exhibition will feature work artists such as Georges Seurat, Josef Albers, Victor Vasarely, Bridget Riley, Rodney Graham, Jim Lambie and Lothar Götz.
Quentin Blake:Inside StoriesSat 21 October – Sun 17 December
Renowned as one of the world’s most important and best-loved illustrators, Blake is famous for his witty and lively drawings in the books of Roald Dahl. This exhibition provides a unique insight into the origins of some of Blake’s most iconic and popular creations, ranging from his illustrations in Dahl’s The Twits and Danny the Champion of the World, to The Boy in the Dress by David Walliams.
The Lost WordsSat 21 October – Sun 17 December
The Lost Words celebrates the relationship between language and the living world, and of nature’s power to spark the imagination at a time when it seems increasingly to be retreating from our children’s stories and imaginations. This exhibition, and accompanying book by Hamish Hamilton, features spell-poems by writer Robert Macfarlane and watercolours by Jackie Morris that make the familiar appear magical.

How to find usPostcode CV35 9HZ. We are situated 9 miles south-east of Stratford-upon-Avon, on the B4086 between Wellesbourne and Kineton. From the M40 take junction 12 or 15 and follow the brown signs.

AccessThe Gallery is fully accessible on all floors, and there are wheelchair friendly paths throughout the Park. Large print guides, wheelchairs and hearing loops are available. Assistance dogs are welcome.
DogsAssistance dogs only in the Gallery and main park. Dogs on leads are allowed in the Old Town Meadow only.
ParkingParking is free. Blue badge spaces are available. Visitors can be dropped off at the gallery.
Shuttle busAvailable throughout the season from the car park to the gallery. Subject to volunteer availability.
