Ukrainian University Degrees Are
Worthless
4 What’s Up
We once had two students working for What’s On who were both studying English and German at Ukraine’s most prestigious university, Taras Shevchenko. One girl was a passionate learner who not only studied the
university curriculum fastidiously, but read books and watched movies in English and German. She was an excellent communica-tor in both languages. The other girl was not so: her English was poor and her German non-existant, but she was connected. Both graduated with a red diploma, the best you can get. This example makes clear just how unreliable any Ukrainian qualification is. This, of course, has a very negative impact on the futures of the students involved, who certainly would be unlikely to secure employment abroad based on a Ukrainian university de-gree.Recently we wrote one of our letters to the president on this very topic, in which we highlighted the detrimental impact a corrupt ed-ucation system has on Ukraine. When two people can emerge with the same qualification from the same university, and one knows
the subject while the other does not, employers can find it difficult to discern the difference and many people with little knowledge can end up in positions of power. And now, following a report in the Arab News, that detrimental ef-fect could be greater than we initially anticipated.Every year, hundreds of thousands of students come to study in Ukraine, mostly from Asia and the Middle East. These students pay for their university tuition, and the fees they pay are necessary for the continued existence of many state Universities. But now it is becoming clear that a number of the countries from which these students come will not recognise the diplomas with which they have graduated. This in turn means that the time and, more importantly, the money they’ve spent on their study in Ukraine has been wasted.Saudi Arabia recently withdrew its recognition of qualifications from universities in Ukraine, meaning that all Saudi students cur-rently studying here are doing so without reason. Abdullah bin Ali Al-Qhattani, General Director of the Certificate Equivalency De-partment in the Ministry of Higher Education, said: “Education delegations from the Ministry of Higher Education have arranged several visits to Ukrainian universities in the past few years to as-sess the quality of education. They reported numerous violations in the universities, who accept foreign students with very low grades, even in medical schools.”He went on to say that Saudi investigations had also revealed that many students who’d graduated with medical degrees in Ukraine had originally graduated in literature in Saudi schools. “The Minis-try of Higher Education has issued strict rules not to approve cer-tificates from any Ukrainian university. We have sent delegations to warn Saudi students not to study in Ukraine.”This step is having a huge impact on Saudi students who’ve gradu-ated here. Amira Sabbah is one who’s fallen foul of this decision by the Saudi government, having recently graduated from medical school in Ukraine. “After I returned to Saudi, the ministry refused to approve my education certificate. I am now jobless,” she told Arab News. While this is a very dramatic and direct step taken by the Saudis, students from other countries are also finding their Ukrainian de-grees worthless once they return home. And as word spreads, less and less students will even consider coming to Ukraine to study, resulting in a massive impact on university funding in Ukraine, (which is already far less than it should be). This clearly demonstrates the negative impact of corruption in this country. The future of the nation lies in the hands of the young, and if the young cannot receive a good education, then the country has no future. Unfortunately the end may come sooner rather than later if foreign students stop coming.

Holocaust Victims Found in DnipropetrovskWhile President Yanukovych was commemorat-ing Babyn Yar victims of the Holocaust in Kyiv earlier this week, a massive tomb of innocents was found in Dnipropetrovsk. The remains were uncovered during the reconstruction of the city’s football fi eld only a half a metre down. Historians say the area on which the fi eld rests was an anti-tank ditch during World War II, where German soldiers used to execute prisoners of war as well as innocent civilians. While the exact number of bodies has yet to be released, scientists state that the majority of those found were women and children. Archaeologists are hypothesising that before the victims were shot, they were fi rst undressed and laid face down. All found remains will be removed and reburied with the appropri-ate respects paid. All of these recent fi ndings do raise a signifi cant question, however: who was it that signed off on the building of a football sta-dium over a massive burial ground in the fi rst place?
No Holds Barred, Only TeethIt’s getting dangerous to be a security guard these days. On the lookout for rowdy teenagers always getting into mischief, Ukrainian community lead-ers have become equally if not more problematic for our local defenders of the peace. Meeting late last week, the Luhansk city council was in ses-sion to discuss a proposal to move a popular food market to the outskirts of the city from its current location in the city centre. Unequivocally against the move, community activist and former may-oral candidate Mikhail Pashchuk stood up and demanded that he be heard. Asked to leave by the city council secretary Oleksandr Filipskiy, Pash-chuk dared one of the guards to try and remove him by force. The guard did just that. Or tried to. What ensued was a scuffl e that left the guard bat-tered, bruised and without a digit. It seems Pa-shchuk was so impassioned, he bit off part of his detainee’s little fi nger. It’s a tough game, but we’re thinking the guard would have got off much easi-er had he opted for truth instead of dare. You win some, you lose some. In this case it was a fi nger.
EU Bluster Over Tymoshenko Trial Means NothingEU foreign ministers met in Poland a few weeks ago, and almost all of them attacked the Tymosh-enko trial, saying it was politically motivated and that it put in serious jeopardy the signing of the association agreement between Ukraine and the EU. We wrote at the time that it was all bluster, and it turns out we were right because at the weekend, EU President Herman van Rumpuy said the EU still expected to sign the agreement by the end of the year, despite the trial.Yanukovych started some serious back-ped-alling on this issue in Yalta a couple of weeks ago after the EU foreign ministers spoke out, so this announcement from van Rumpuy could well come on the back of a behind-doors deal that will set Tymoshenko free and allow the association agreement to go ahead as planned. That, of course, is pure speculation, and we will have to wait until 11 October when it has been said the verdict will be announced. The trial is adjourned until that date, which allows all of those visitors to Khreshchatyk a huge sigh of relief as the volume has been turned down on the competing sound systems once again. Let’s hope 11 October brings an end to the whole nonsensical affair once and for all.
Argentina: The New TurkeyAs of 2 October, citizens of Ukraine will be able to travel, visa free, to beautiful Argentina. A recently implemented intergovernmental agreement al-lows citizens of both countries to enter, stay for up to 90 days, leave and transit through either country without any hassle or legal obstacle. According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine, they are hoping this will intensify the cultural as well as tourist relations between the two countries. As a Ukrainian citizen, all you now require is your international passport and travel documents for any accompanied children. Currently, there are nearly 300,000 Ukrainians living in this second-largest South American na-tion state, and that number may well go up with this new ruling. Israel, Montenegro, Croatia and Macedonia are a few other countries, with date re-strictions, to which Ukrainians can travel short-term but visa-free, and agreements are already in the works with travel to Serbia and Brunei. While the elimination of these burdensome restrictions may take attention away from Turkey, one of the most popular summer destinations for many Eastern Europeans, we say welcome to the 21st
century! It’s about time!

The Father of English The Father of English Cathedral MusicCathedral MusicAn evening of music by Tomas Tallis, Master Klass Cultural Centre (Lavrska 16)7 October at 20.00The Master Klass Cultural Centre is presenting the eighth concert in their British music cycle, and as part of the Classics on Fridays series, this is your invitation to an evening of Tomas Tal-lis music. Recognised as “the Father of English Cathedral Music”, Tallis was one of the greatest European compos-ers of the sixteenth century, creat-ing a new repertoire for the Anglican Church. This particular concert will introduce the audience to a represen-tative range of music for strings and brass, keyboard works as well as a selection from his Latin and Anglican motets. Tickets are 40hrv. For more informa-tion call 594-1062.
An Eternal Story of LoveAn Eternal Story of LoveDaphnis and Chloe (modern French ballet), Molody Theatre (Prorizna 17)8 & 9 October at 19.00Daphnis and Chloe are the leading characters of an ancient Greek novel by Long who fall passionately in love with each other despite their young age. Interestingly, the story’s choreo-graphic interpretation did not appear until centuries later. Staged in Greno-ble in 1982 by Jean-Cloud Galotta, Ukraine has fi nally got its chance to see this beautiful love story live. With a minimalist scene design and no special effects, only the three heroes present-ing love, life, desire and passion will play a part.Tickets are 30 – 100hrv. For more in-formation call 278-7392.

The Haggard Epidemic The Haggard Epidemic Haggard (Germany, symphonic metal) and Epidemia (Russia, power metal), Bingo Club (Pr Peremohy 112)13 October at 19.00Over the course of their Dark Symphony Tour 2011, Ger-many’s Haggard has added Ukraine to their circuit. Invit-ing Russia’s Epidemia to warm up the crowd, this power metal band has prepared a brand new programme just for the show. Both groups have already become legends in their home countries, and uniting them will most certainly mean an even better show than originally thought. Now it’s Ukraine’s turn to hear them live. Tickets are 200 – 350hrv. For more information call 424-2555.
An Ocean of EmotionsAn Ocean of EmotionsOkean Elzy (pop-rock), Palace Ukraine (V Vasylkivska 103)6 & 7 October at 19.00Taking a break after their Dolce Vita tour, Okean Elzy is back this October with now TWO huge shows right here in the capi-tal (the band added the concert on the 6th to accommodate huge ticket sales). Accompanied by a symphonic orchestra, OE will play all of the songs they are known and loved for, which seems to be a trend occurring with many musicians and bands as of late. With our own Ukrainian rockers taking charge, however, you’re sure to hear something you haven’t heard before! Tickets are 450 – 1250hrv. For more information call 247−2444.

So dis-tinguished are his works, they speak an un-questionable truth about topics for which we all struggle to find answers in daily life. Translating the ‘others’ from this next exhi-bition of his as people, the artist reveals that one of the most significant focuses for him is in fact the human being. The time they have been together, however, which is only a short couple of years, has been spent productively in the lab turn-ing out tunes the likes of which anyone into paranoid thrash is going to enjoy. Groningen is where Dopey Rotten, Jay Reaper, and Skits Vicious came together, and stages around the world are where they are headed. There’s one in Kyiv that’s got their names on it this October. My fi rst thoughts were that they didn’t look alike, but it was easy to tell they were a family because they all talked up a storm and giggled at each others’ stories. Grandma Svitlana is 75 years of age and smiles mysteriously, full of experience
and wisdom. Yaroslava on the other hand is 20, studies part-time and fully admits she’s not grown up yet. Mum Tamara is 44 and tries to keep Yaro-slava in check. As we settle down to talk, I prepare to travel through the last century. They seem so closely bound, but I want to discover whether there is a clash of generations underneath all this.
What’s On: What’s On: What are your brightest childhood memories? Are you still in touch with your schoolmates?Svitlana (grandma): I grew up during the war. We didn’t have much to be happy about. We played with sticks and balls, but we had something bet-ter than regular games: Soviet soldiers came through all the time and they shared some exciting stories with us. There were four of us kids, sitting on the stove, listening. You could hear a pin drop. Also there were a lot of nurses. Our small house was full of courageous and outstanding people. They made me feel on top of the world. From school, I’m still in touch with my teacher. She’s over 90 now. My classmates and I have been visiting her for years.Tamara (mum): I don’t keep in touch with my schoolmates, but if we meet by chance in the street, we have a heart-warming chat. Let me think about my childhood…Yaroslava (daughter): Mum, tell them about your wings! Ok, I’ll tell it myself. As a kid, my mum had a noble aspiration to fl y. A willingness to fl y unites us all, but when my mum was younger, she built her own wings with feathers and climbed up willow trees so that she might fl y. Breathtaking! About my own memories…Svitlana (grandma): What memories are you talking about? You’re a child of television.
Yaroslava (daughter): Although I watched a lot of TV, I did have hobbies. My friend and I created a souvenir exhibition where the admission fee was 50 kopecks. Some kids were as poor as church mice, and one girl paid with fl owers instead of money. Our business didn’t take off! But school gave me a lot of unforgettable memories as well. I don’t keep in touch with my teachers or classmates. If they’re not on Facebook, forget it.
What’s On: What’s On: How old were you when you started feeling like an adult?Svitlana (grandma): At 13. My mum died and I was head of the household. I took the responsibility on my shoulders. Tamara (mum): For me maturity came when I got a job. I began writing for newspapers at 16 and it turned my life upside down. Yaroslava (daughter): Being an adult sounds appalling to me. Adults are people who do serious business, or think they do. Regardless of being re-sponsible for what I do, I don’t want to grow up. What’s On: What’s On: Picture yourself being a student and hanging around with your friends. What are you doing?Svitlana (grandma): Oh, sweet times. We had a village musician who played an accordion. Boys and girls danced national dances in the street. Tamara (mum): We clustered together in the coffee house near Bessara-bska Square. They made the most brilliant hot chocolate I’ve ever had. We listened to Stevie Wonder with his heart-rending I Just Called.Yaroslava (daughter): I’m still studying part-time and I’m always in a hurry. My student years are a little sour. I’ve spent them studying, working and leading social projects. One song which refl ects my youth is Vstavay by Okean Elzy. This band inspires me to keep moving on and pushing myself forward.
Every age has its preferences and unique circumstances. In Ukraine in particular, different generations have had to face very different problems. But does the changing environment affect a change in attitude as well as living? For women of different generations in Kyiv, is there more differentiating them than uniting them? What attitudes and experiences are similar, and which ones contrast? Has the tide of time changed Kyiv women beyond recognition? What’s On wanted to fi nd out, and recently met a family of Kyiv women to ask. Separated by 55 years, they walked into our offi ce and told us what they thought.

Football Saves the WorldAMBASSADOR’S RESIDENCE The Embassy of Spain in conjunction with UNICEF and the Ukrainian Football Federation joined forces on 28 September and held a charity event aimed at raising funds for children in Ukraine. Organisers supplied T-shirts and balls with signatures of famous footballers from Real Madrid, FC Barcelona, Dynamo Kyiv, Shakhter Donetsk and Ukraine’s National Team which were sold during auction. The event demonstrated once again that football isn’t just about being beautiful, it’s also about being able to help.

One of the best things in life is appreciating the differences between countries and cul-tures. One of the most annoy-
ing things in life is when foreigners come to a country and start telling it how to do things. I aim to do lots of the former and none of the latter (although we do make ex-ceptions with the Dear Viktor articles - he needs all the help he can get). Even if I were one of those expats who think white socks and a comb-over is a permit to pontifi cate, I wouldn’t have much to say. Apart from the corruption, all seems fi ne. I’m enjoying my time here. Two countries such as the UK and Ukraine have thousands of differences between them, and a trip back to London last week-end allowed me to pick a Top 10. In London, the following applies:
All dogs are on leadsWomen wear fl at shoesDrivers obey road rulesThings workPeople ride bikes and runPavements are for walking onPublic transport is expensiveThere is Health & SafetyPeople speak different languagesEveryone is from a different place
Not all of these differences are favourable to the UK. I certainly hadn’t missed the ex-pensive transport, nor the annoying safety signs such as: ‘Warning! Conkers falling in this area’. In other respects I found myself momentarily slipping into Kyiv mentality. A woman was looking for a place to park on Saturday morning, and I guided her to a space on the pavement. She politely re-fused, pointing out there was a sign saying
she’d get a £300 penalty, her car would be towed away, and that enforcement cameras were operating in the area. Fair point. One difference in particular, however, is worth picking up on, even though it’s con-troversial. I’m not sure whether it’s fair to say that London is multi-ethnic and Kyiv isn’t, but it certainly feels like that. When I fi rst came to Ukraine, I wondered what they’d done with all the black guys. Where were they? Where were the Asians? The His-panics? The Chinese? Where was the mix of languages, ideas, cultures and colours? Where was the variety that makes other cit-ies thrive? Kyiv struck me as being one of the most ethnically homogenous capitals I’d ever visited, and I think it suffers as a re-sult. There are immense benefi ts that multi-culturalism brings, but because Kyivites have had such little exposure to people of different races and religions, they’re cynical about them. I understand why they would be, and would likely feel the same if that’s all I’d ever known. If I were ever to be an annoying foreigner and preach, I’d say that difference and diversity is a good thing in almost every respect, and that most cosmopolitan European cities of the 21st century have embraced that in ar-eas other than women’s fashion. But given that I don’t wear white socks, have a comb-over or like preachy foreigners, I won’t.
Dear Stephen, I’ve been dating a man from Italy for three months. He doesn’t live here but comes every couple of weeks to visit. I think I love him! But there is a problem. At fi rst I assumed he’d gone for a cigarette and I just went back to sleep, but last time it happened I tried calling him and there was no answer. I stayed up until I heard the door open and ran back to bed pretending I was asleep. He crawled in like nothing had happened. What’s going on? Is this normal? – Worried, 20
Dear Worried,There are three possibilities: a) he’s cheating on you b) he’s sleep-walking c) he’s a were-wolf. If he gets anxious when there’s a full moon and has particularly hairy ears that he scratches with his foot, I’d say he was a werewolf, except he’s Italian, so you couldn’t rule out national considerations. If he comes and goes in his pyjamas and seems confused and non-sensical, I’d say he was sleep-walking, except he’s Italian, so you couldn’t rule out na-tional considerations. Finally, if he goes out wearing aftershave and his best shirt, I’d say he was cheating on you, except he’s Italian, so there must be some other explanation. What-ever the reason, at least he’s considerate enough not to wake you up. Yours sincerely,Stephen
