Spring Lawn Care 101Well folks, spring is almost here and that means it’s time to start working on our lawns. For those of you that want a lush, green lawn when summer rolls around but are not sure how to achieve that, the helpful people at RONA are here to tell you how.

Step 1: Remove thatch and patch bare spots.

Thatch is a tightly intermingled layer of living and dead stems, leaves, and roots which accumulate between the layer of actively growing grass and the soil underneath. This can be removed by using a stiff, long handled lawn rake. If bare spots occur, you may have to re-seed.

Step 2: Lime to raise the pH balance of the soil.

Winter rains wash away nutrients and make soil more acidic. A soil’s pH is the measure of its acidity and alkalinity. Grass likes a sweeter, more alkaline soil. The way to make soil less acidic is to add lime. Dolomite and DoloPril lime are the two most popular varieties. Test your soil using a ph test kit. If the soil lower than 6.2, it should be corrected with lime.

Step 3: Moss-Control.

After liming is the best time to apply a moss-control fertilizer. However, since moss will still have to be raked away after it dies, and may even return, the best

moss-control is to change the conditions where moss is growing. Decreasing your soil’s acidity, improving lawn drainage, and increasing natural light where possible are the best ways to reduce moss growth. Also, after raking up dead moss, sprinkling sand on the spots will help prevent regrowth.

Step 4: Fertilize with care.

Fertilizer can help your lawn grow thick and lush, but if it’s not used properly, it can actually damage the grass. A slow-release nitrogen fertilizer is best, and no more than 1 pound (0.45 kilograms) of nitrogen should be spread per 1,000 square feet (93 square meters). It should be applied early in the season when the turf begins actively growing, but be careful; using too much fertilizer or a fertilizer too rich in nitrogen will cause your grass to burn, and therefore undo all your hard work.

Compost is a great alternative to chemical fertilizer as it won’t burn your grass and is much safer for the handler and the environment.

So why bother?

Lawns are worth the work. You will be rewarded with an ideal surface to have picnics on or to play any number of summertime backyard games (Bocce ball anyone?) At the very least, lawns provide a still, green, surrounding to enjoy all summer long. For more advice on lawn care, or any other project you have this spring, come visit the friendly helpful staff at Fraser Valley RONA.

Welcome to Spring! The days are getting longer and the air is feeling warmer - this can only mean one thing - spring is here!

And with the new season, come a whole new list of exciting events - beginning with one of our favorites, Jann Arden at the Clarke Theatre - a SOLD OUT show presented by Rock.it Boy Entertainment. Rob Warwick has been bringing premium entertainment to our very own Clarke Theatre for 15 years! What’s On! salutes Rob and the crew at the Clarke for a partnership that we hope lasts another 15 years and more.

Speaking of the Clarke Theatre, check out all of the great new shows coming to our community theatre this spring -

Cascadia Wind Ensemble, Arts Club Theatre, BYRD DAWG and the Vintage Electric Band, and the BC Ukrainian Festival are just of few of the fantastic events happening at one of the busiest theatres in the Fraser Valley!

We want to take a moment to introduce our new Sales Representative Cora Price who has joined the What’s On! Team in Mission and Abbotsford. Connect with Cora at 604.217.2259 or [email protected]. We also want to give a shout out to a variety of new advertisers who have come on board to share their offerings with our loyal readers - don’t forget to them you saw it in What’s On!

Cheers,

Are you ready to get into the best shape of your life?

The Ultimate Tribute to

The Everly Brothers & Simon and Garfunkel

Byrd Dawg

Starring Joel Dietrich and Wayne Rempel

Friday, April 8 – 7:30 pmClark TheatreTickets: OnTourTickets.comPhone: 1.855.411.7500

Describe your current show?

Joel: It’s an evening of music from the Everly Brothers and Simon and Garfunkel. It’s a show that has audiences smiling, cheering, and singing along. It’s a show full of songs that the audience knows... Wake Up Little Susie, All I Have To Do Is Dream, Bye Bye Love, Sound of Silence, The Boxer, and on and on! People have remarked after the shows about how they’ve been singing the songs all the way out to the parking lot and beyond! I know people are going to have fun and be glad they came!

How did you choose in particular the Everly Brothers & Simon and Garfunkel to pay tribute to?

Wayne: I’ve always loved the Everly Brothers and when Joel and I discovered we had a nice vocal blend I suggested we should try some Everly Brothers. Joel grew up listening to Simon and Garfunkel and suggested we learn some of their music as they were heavily

thought it would be a good idea to pay tribute to these two iconic duos, as there is such a strong link between them. They even toured together at one point.

You’re backed up by THE VINTAGE ELECTRIC BAND. What can you tell us about them?

Joel: We have put together an amazing four piece band who have a passion for this music!

They are all true artists and complement Byrd Dawg perfectly!

Do you have a personal favourite song of the artists you pay tribute to?

Joel: Hmmmm.....that’s a tough one. There are so many good ones. I quite like the Everly’s “Let It Be Me”. It’s just a beautiful song. For Simon and

Bound” and “Bridge Over Troubled Water” really speak to me.

Wayne: It’s hard to pick a favourite, but from the Everly Brothers it would probably be All I Have To Do Is Dream. From Simon and Garfunkel it would be Homeward Bound. Both those songs have captivated me since I was young.

The Sumas Regional Consortium for High Tech (SRCTec) and the District of Mission are working in partner-ship to attract tech-savvy business-es and entrepreneurs to Mission through the recently launched Tech Starts Here Campaign which pro-motes our ideal location, major transportation corridors, lower cost of living, and a life style that ad-dresses work-life balance.

Key objectives for 2016 include reviewing options for high speed broadband connectivity within Mis-sion, as well as bringing a propos-al forward to explore funding for

SRCTec is also looking to continue building on the educational plat-forms with UFV and the District of Mission School Board, which got

BC Tech Summit, where a Coding Camp was hosted for Grade 9 stu-

School.

The above objectives are strate-gically aligned with the provincial government’s three core pillars as outlined in the BC Tech Strategy: capital, talent and markets. High-lights include $100 million toward expanding venture capital in BC, K-12 curriculum changes required for a career in technology, along

with post-secondary support and encouraging commercialization

gramming. These associated tac-tics will help to ensure SRCTec is in a prime position for additional fund-ing and partnership support in the years to come.

tion governed by a group of tech-nology executives who form the volunteer board of directors. The organization offers support and guidance to start-up technology entrepreneurs focusing on start-up assistance, business registra-tion, technical support, education, research, commercialization, net-working and mentorship. The goal is to establish the Fraser Valley as the technology start-up hub for BC, through attracting investment, es-tablishing infrastructure, fostering innovation and offering hi-tech edu-cational opportunities, subsequently leading to job creation and econom-ic growth for the region.

In 2015, the program brought 27 new employees to Mission, saw the implementation of two Venture Ac-

food and Tech General (a category that includes gaming, aerospace and manufacturing technologies),

Valley Agri-Tech Trade Show, and the introduction of the BCIC Inno-vator Skills Initiative, a program that gives BC technology employers the funding to hire BC post-secondary students.

Lately, Downtown Mission has been a hot topic in social media. What people may not realize is that opinions, good and bad, shared on social media about Downtown Mission affect Mission as a whole.

Here are some facts to consider:

• Downtown Mission boasts over 100 locally owned businesses: eateries, groceries, clothing stores, service providers, entertainment venues, galleries and more.

• Our businesses employ well over 500 people, many of whom are Mission residents.

• Despite the current economic situation, our vacancy rate is below the Fraser Valley average of 20%, which means more businesses for you to enjoy.

• Shopping local is a green way to shop! The less you drive, the better is it for our environment

• Do you want to save money? Shop local! Our merchants price their merchandise competitively; they want your business! As well, a cheaper price might be over the bridge or across the border, but once you consider the cost of gas, and the time is takes, you may actually have lost money.

• Money spent at a local merchant stays in Mission; that money goes toward other local businesses, strengthening our local economy, and creating more jobs

Daily, our merchants serve Mission residents who admit they’ve never been Downtown. They are pleasantly surprised by how friendly our merchants are, how clean it is, and how good to it feels to support a local business in their community, and not a

store across the bridge.

So before you choose to shop out of town, support a Mission business! You’ll be so glad you did.

Starting April 4, 2016, up to two 80-litre cans of garbage weighing up to 20 kg each, will be collected every two weeks. Compostables and recyclables will still be collected in unlimited amounts every week.

Here’s Why

•• Separating food waste for weekly collection with the Rot Pot removes the smelliest part of your garbage.

Here’s How

Put your recyclables in blue bags, and all your food waste into a Rot Pot or an 80-litre can with a lid and an orange sticker. Get an orange sticker free at Municipal Hall, Public works, or the Leisure Centre.

If you produce extra waste because of a medical condition or if you have two or more children under the age of three in your household you can pick up free extra garbage stickers at Public Works.

Coquitlam South

“My family, consisting of my wife, three daughters and I arrived in Canada on the nines. The 9th day, of the 9th month, of 2009. Coming to Canada my goal was always to be in the media industry as it was my background in Trinidad & Tobago. After working for two of the largest and wonderful media organizations in Canada, Corus Entertainment, owner of radio stations

including CKNW and CFOX, and Glacier Media, owner of newspapers including the former TriCities Now, the TriCity News and the Burnaby Now, the opportunity has presented itself for me to utilize the training and experience that I have received, and marry that with the world of entertainment that I have always loved. Being an avid movie buff, even at one point hosting my own movie review website, having this magazine will be a great way to marry my expertise of media sales, with my love of the entertainment industry, that includes movies, music and local events. Also, being an entrepreneur in the industry that I have known for more than two decades will mean that it is more than just a job for me. I will be doing something that I intensely love to do. And I’m glad to realize that dream with What’s On! Coquitlam South.Working with Glacier Media I was able to work within the Coquitlam community and assist in producing publications including the Coquitlam Program Guide put out by the City of Coquitlam, the TriCities Health Guide, and the TriCities Chamber of Commerce Map, so getting to know the various business and establishing those connections and servicing their needs are a great part of why I look forward to providing a new outlet to help them establish their goals. I’m also looking forward to meeting all the community groups in a community I love and am proud to call home! Our Mission Statement: To provide an entertaining voice to the community and to deliver a viable additional outlet for local businesses to reach and interact with potential customers.”

To get into the historical launch issue please contact James on 778-938-2413 or e-mail [email protected] a great community event happening in Coquitlam? Give James a call or drop him an email, he’d love to hear from you!

“There’s so much that I love about my What’s On! magazine business, from meeting so many people, to hearing the positive feedback, to putting it all together. I think the best part though, is when the magazines are delivered and I open the first box to see the new magazine. Very exciting to see it! Something I created!”Cathy Minler, What’s On!
