Letter from the PublisherOn February 4, 2019, our Co-Founder and Co-Publisher, Mark Nagel, passed in his home from an Epileptic Seizure. While our cover logo is typically red, we’ve changed this issue’s logo as we mourn the loss of our colleague and friend.

Mark and I met 20 years ago through our mutual friend, Ralph Paul Gernhardt, the publisher and founder of Gay Chicago Magazine. In addition to being colleagues, over the next 10 years we would become very close friends who shared the same ideas and dreams. We left Gay Chicago Magazine in 2009 and started this publication. Over the last 10 years, Mark and I shared a common goal to support and give back to our LGBTQ community as much as we could.

For over 26 years, Mark recognized the vital role the press plays in the advancement of the LGBTQ community. His work has emphasized the importance of providing a localized publication for our community, businesses and causes. Our goal with this publication is to not only promote the many things happening in Chicago and the Midwest, but also to address and educate the community on important issues related to health, well-being, bullying, transgender support and equal rights.

Mark was also involved in many organizations and helped anyone he could. In the 1990’s at the height of the AIDS epidemic, Mark delivered meals to people who were dying. I once asked him how he stayed strong, and his response was, “I had to, I wanted to be there when no one else was there to help them.”

I can assure you GRAB Magazine will continue with Mark’s steadfast dedication to serving our community for many years to come.

As Publisher, I would like to extend my gratitude to our readers, advertisers, community partners, as well as family and friends -- with whom this would not be possible. I would also like to extend a special thank you to Modesto Tico Valle and the Center on Halsted for giving Mark the Celebration of Life he truly deserved.

Sincerely,

Stacy Bridges

Origin story: an interview withJohn Cameron MitchellBy Gregg Shapiro

If ever there was a modern gay renaissance man, it’s John Cameron Mitchell. The actor/writer/filmmaker probably first crossed most of our radar when Hedwig and the Angry Inch, which he co-wrote with gay musician Stephen Trask, first opened off-Broadway in 1998, featuring Mitchell in the lead role. The 2001 movie version, starring and directed by Mitchell earned him both a Best Director prize at Sundance and a Golden Globe Award nomination. Other films directed by Mitchell include Shortbus (2006) and Rabbit Hole (2010), which starred Nicole Kidman and marked the feature film debut of Miles Teller. Now, more than 20 years after Hedwig’s debut (and following its 2014 Broadway debut starring Neil Patrick Harris and subsequent wins at the Tonys), Mitchell is taking Hedwig (and the wig, we hope) out of the box in a new series of live concert events titled The Origin of Love Tour: The Songs and Stories of Hedwig in select cities. I had the privilege of

speaking with him before the tour began.

Gregg Shapiro: Beginning in February 2019, and then picking up again in June, you are performing a series of concerts -- The Origin of Love Tour: The Songs and Stories of Hedwig. How did the concept for the concert come about?John Cameron Mitchell: It really came about because my mom’s Alzheimer’s care was beyond me and beyond her. It really was a crass, yet tasteful, grasp for healthcare money [laughs]. The first opportunity was in Australia last summer. I forged the show there with two wonderful audiences at the Sydney Opera House and elsewhere. I wrote a piece that I became very proud. It talks about the making of Hedwig, the inspiration, working with Stephen Trask, and how my boyfriend and his death effected it, as well as Plato, the Gnostic gospels and philosophical underpinnings. Also, how it resonates

today. How it’s effected my life. It has become a piece in and of itself that is sort of an autobiography.

GS: I’m glad you mentioned how it resonates today. At the time you were creating Hedwig and the Angry Inch, 20 or so years ago, the trans community was much less visible than it is today. How do you see Hedwig and the Angry Inch’s role in that change?JCM: All I have is anecdotal evidence of how it effected people. People come up to me, maybe once a week, and say, “It really helped me at a time when I felt like I didn’t know myself. I couldn’t find my people. I knew I didn’t fit in in some way, usually to do with gender or sexuality.” Hedwig never identifies herself as trans, because, as a boy she as forced into a gender decision by the patriarchy, in effect. “You cannot leave unless you are married! You cannot marry the man that you love!” And the man himself if like, “Actually, I kind of prefer you as a woman” [laughs].

Page 10: when Hedwig and the Angry Inch, which he co-wrote with gay musician Stephen Trask, first opened off-Broadway in 1998, featuring Mitchell in the lead role. The 2001 movie version,

There’s this kind of lack of choice and agency, which is not trans. That was actual abuse. It had to do with the binarchy, too, choosing one or the other. What I love about the new trans world is that binarchy is no longer the norm. It’s about fluidity, choosing your gender, representing what you are. If you choose to or not to manipulate your body, so be it. You decide what you are, which can only be healthy for our culture. Even at Northwestern, some of the professors were a little embarrassed by my work after graduation. Other professors fought to have me come back and speak to students. Some weren’t sure what to make of Hedwig. It wasn’t Ibsen. I always had great support from people like Frank Galati, who was my mentor at school. He was a boundary pusher, (encouraging us to) use everything in our power to make something on stage. When I would meet trans people, I’d say “Hedwig freed me up. If Hedwig could create herself and bounce back from what was forced upon him/her, I can, too.” In other words, I feel empowered to do what I need to do and what I need to make. If a weird play or movie like this can resonate…when we first came out, there was no chance of us being on Broadway because of homophobia, because drag was considered low-class, punk rock was not considered theater music. We were always on the outside. For me, it was never a trans statement. I’m not trans. If I was 18 years old now, I might want to free myself from the binarchy and identify as non-binary trans. I’m too old now [laughs] and I don’t care. I am who I am. I’ve always been out as gay since my last year at college at Northwestern and I don’t feel the need to add any new labels because I’m just trying to make money for my mom. But I’ve become proud of this piece. I want it to be an oasis in a time of panic. I want to gather together our

Hedwig community and give them hope. I get hope from doing it, from touching them. I love crowd-surfing in a seated venue, which might very well happen.

GS: For those who don’t know, how did you and your Hedwig collaborator Stephen Trask, who is joining The Origin of Love tour in June in New York, meet?

JCM: We met on a plane. We talk about that in the show. We were both ignoring the movie, which was When Harry Met Sally. He put down a Fassbender biography on the seat between us, almost as an ice-breaker. I think of Fassbender as an ice-maker, but…it was the beginning of a conversation. We kept bumping into each other, over time, for the next few years. When I was looking for a composer for a piece that would use rock music, I went to see his band at CBGB’s. His bass player became my boyfriend. He saw me in

the musical Hello Again and we both agreed that we must work together.

GS: Is The Origin of Love Tour: The Songs and Stories of Hedwig also a way for you to commemorate the 20th anniversary of Hedwig and the Angry Inch?JCM: It wasn’t planned that way. Because I want to make it beautiful with

my costume, and back-up singer and band and everything, I end up not making any money really [laughs]. I kind of break even. If I was (performing) alone with tracks, I could make money. But I don’t want to be alone on stage. I’m bringing around a community of people to do this. I’ve never been great with money. I’ve been great with creative community. Those things lead to other things. I always find that if you do what you need to do, enough money comes along. You’ll never be rich, but enough. People have been really sweet. Some have made a little t-shirt fund for my mom and me on Instagram and have raised enough for a month of her care. You get by. I’m very lucky to be able to help my mom and that my fans are there, too. There’s going to be a Criterion version of (the movie) of Hedwig in 2019. We want it to last for the next generation, too. This is a way of keeping the community feeling cuddly in a time when you need it.

GS: In addition to you, an amazing array of actors have portrayed Hedwig on stage including Michael

Cerveris (who I saw do the show at the Jane Street Theater in 1999), Neil Patrick Harris, Taye Diggs, Michael C. Hall and Andrew Rannells. Is there someone who hasn’t played Hedwig that you’d like to see do so?JCM: There’s always another crew, which is great. It never ends. What’s fun about it, is that it’s a mask, it’s drag rather than trans. It’s a mask that anyone, any gender can wear. We’ve had trans people, women and men play it. At first, (casting) a man made sense because he has to also become Tommy

at the end. Some people have the right chops to do sing it and some don’t. It’s got to be the right person who feels it and can technically do all of the things. Because it’s now more part of the culture, there’s an openness to women playing it, which is great. Lena Hall played it on the West Coast. At the end, she walked into the light naked. Her female body was so moving to me. It could be Hedwig’s body. It could be the actor’s body. It could be any of us. Any of us could be Hedwig. If you understand those feelings, put on the mask, and then take off the mask when necessary, when you’re done with it. To me, it’s a tool. Anyone who plays it says it’s the hardest and most rewarding thing they’ve done, and they’re changed. The foam wigs on the fans in the film is a metaphor for Hedwig is everybody, if you dig down deep enough.

GS: What did it mean to you when the production starring Neil Patrick Harris won four Tony Awards, including Best Revival of a Musical?JCM: I call it “Best Survival” [laughs]. We barely made it. Hedwig’s just barely holding on. That keeps it honest, if you know what I mean. We’ve never been on top. That night was pretty special. It was more pleasurable than “Oh, my

God, we made it!” We already knew we made it with the people who saw it and are changed by it. A Tony doesn’t do that. Yes, the Tony Awards and the world changed so that Hedwig is not considered anathema to the Great White Way. That was cool to know. But then the world will change again. I always thought of Hedwig as a very traditional entertainment in terms of its form. It’s not challenging. There’s an opening number, there’s a closing number. It uses Broadway structures. It’s got jokes. It’s like Gypsy. The unappreciated woman. I always thought it was traditional Broadway. It’s cool that Broadway finally agreed. When I won my special Tony (in 2015) for reprising the role, it was awesome, but also wasn’t necessary. We had already had our rewards. Maybe because I grew up in the time of AIDS and always felt that, moment to moment, I was grateful to be alive and angry that homophobia killed people and that transphobia kills and it goes on and on. To me, what I made was important. A message for the message’s sake, art for art’s sake. Money, fame, awards – those things helped more people see it. The fact that Neil played it meant that many more people saw it who wouldn’t have otherwise. I’m not against it, as long as we’re not compromising. The

Keke Palmer is not a girl, not yet – oh wait, she is a woman. It happened so fast, but here we are: With her squeaky-clean Nickelodeon and Disney Channel days behind her, Palmer disappears into her latest rough-and-buff turn as the eponymous lesbian street hustler anchoring the Lee Daniels-produced drama Pimp. Hair pulled back into a mohawk-shaped waterfall of braids and buzzed on both sides whilst presenting a chiseled physique and altogether hard aesthetic, there’s nary a trace of Palmer, Child Star.

Palmer’s work after her breakout role as 11-year-old Akeelah Anderson in the 2006 drama Akeelah and the Bee has epitomized the makings of a precocious multi-hyphenate: beyond her film career, which also includes 2012’s Joyful Noise, the 25-year-old Illinois native starred on TV’s Scream Queens, a Ryan Murphy production, and can currently be seen on the Epix spy drama Berlin Station; her theater roles include the televised Grease: Live and Broadway’s Rodgers + Hammerstein’s Cinderella as Cinderella herself (she was the first actor of color to play the role in this particular production of the princess classic); she has one proper studio album, her 2007 debut So Cool, and another on the way; and in 2017, she wrote a book, I Don’t Belong to You: Quiet the Noise and Find Your Voice, documenting her journey thus far.

In 2015, Palmer came out as sexually fluid in the video for her song “I Don’t Belong to You.” In the clip, she’s seen in bed with a man but ends up at the house of a woman, played by fellow singer Cassie. Here, Palmer reflects on the LGBTQ community’s reaction to her coming out and discusses embracing her masc energy, what James Dean taught her about sexuality, normalizing queer black characters and an irksome double standard in the bisexual community.

Chris Azzopardi: Keke, one thing is for sure: ‘Pimp’ is not an episode of Nickelodeon’s ‘True Jackson’. KeKe Palmer: (Laughs) Oh my gosh, it’s definitely a total different project and different tone. I just felt like I was really stepping outside myself, that’s for sure.

CA: Was that intentional? Were you craving something grittier? KP: Step outside myself, for sure. I started developing this project right after True Jackson, like a year after kind of doing the same thing. I think TV naturally can be a little bit repetitive, and when you’re doing a children’s network, it can really only go so far (with) subjects and content matter and what you can talk about. So, for me, I was really just looking for something that would allow me a challenge as an actor.

CA: What was the biggest challenge working on this film? KP: The biggest challenge was letting go – letting go without fear of doing a character that’s so different from yourself. And it’s an intense role; you really kind of have to let go. And it’s not a positive (role): Wednesday has a lot of negative dynamics around her that she’s been dealing with throughout her life. Doing it was not necessarily hard but actually being in that kind of headspace for so long was difficult.

CA: There are a lot of unfortunate things going on around her, but the least of her worries is her sexuality. That’s refreshing. KP: Exactly.

CA: Was playing someone who’s a lesbian a draw?KP: I can’t say her sexuality itself was a draw, but what you’re saying (was). I like the character as a whole. I liked everything about her. I think what attracted me to her the most was her strength. This kind of character being a lead character and being female is not what we see often, so that’s what attracted me the most. Just that she was tough, and she was cool, and I didn’t

really think too much about who she slept with, although I was delighted by the love story between her and her girlfriend. But I just saw it simply as a love story as opposed to a gay love story and a dynamic between women that we haven’t seen in that kind of way. It wasn’t oversexualized, and I really loved the way that her sexuality was displayed in the film. It wasn’t exploited.

CA: And by depicting her sexuality in a matter-of-fact way, it helps to normalize it. KP: Somebody might say she’s a quote-unquote “stud” or she’s not a femme – there’s a lot of language that’s used in the community. Having said that, Wednesday has both. That’s what I love about Wednesday, and I really tried to make that apparent. Wednesday is masculine and feminine. She has elements of both, and she and her girlfriend share those positions with each other, so I feel like it’s the same way in all relationships whether you’re same sex or not. And again, that’s what I loved about the film: We weren’t just doing something that’s stereotypical; we weren’t just giving you this hard-up, one-note (character) and she’s just flat – no, she’s a human.

CA: Was her gender fluidity written in the script? KP: I think her being tough was a part of

the script, but the nuances brought to it, that was definitely me. Just because myself, I have elements of high masculinity just as much as I have elements of high femininity, and in Wednesday, I really got to explore those elements in myself a lot more. I enjoyed that because I think women are strong, and though Wednesday is a lesbian, I don’t think masculinity defines your sexuality. I think that’s you as person.

CA: Can you give me an example of how you feel you’ve embraced your masculinity? KP: I can’t say I can think of one where it’s glaringly obvious, but I think in general I don’t ever choose what people would expect me to say or how people would expect me to respond to anything as a woman or as a black person or as anybody in general. As a person I don’t feel like I fit into many boxes of identity.

CA: You played TLC’s Chilli in the Lifetime biopic ‘CrazySexyCool: The TLC Story’. She doesn’t strike me as someone who is straight-up feminine. KP: Yeah, not at all. And that’s the thing, it doesn’t have to be as obvious as, oh, this person’s wearing their pants low and they got a big top on. Masculinity can be as small as you sitting with your legs open.

CA: It can be an attitude.KP: It can be an attitude. Masculinity is different. It can be just how you approach a situation, or energy you’re putting off in this particular moment. I think I’ve had that many times; especially when I’m creating boundary lines, I’ve definitely had it. When I’m trying to pursue something platonic with another male, sometimes I will be masculine to let them know, “Hey, you my homeboy; what’s good?”

CA: How do you hope this movie speaks to queer black women? KP: Man, I just think it allows opportunity to get more knowledge in accepting one another. I don’t think the black community has been as hard on lesbian women as much as they’ve been on homosexual men. But one of my cousins is just like Wednesday, and so I think for us it really just more so maybe can take the light off the fact that this is a gay person, and more so this is a person and really wrap ourselves into this specific person’s world, not a gay person but this person that’s not just defined solely by these aspects of her life. Really just give this character a human opportunity to stand on her own. Because like I said, a lot of times with these characters, they’re just supporting roles, they’re not the lead, they’re not someone you would feel for; they’re most likely someone you get to judge and they’re kind of a spectacle. So that’s what I love about this movie: We’re normalizing something that has been around and has been normal for years,

but now we’re just giving it the opportunity to breathe and the light to shine.

CA: When you first came to terms with your own sexuality, did you have role models? Anyone in the business from the LGBTQ community you looked to for inspiration? KP: Maybe when I was like 18, 19, I was kind of like, “What does this mean?” But I think growing up in L.A., you kind of feel OK to be yourself. I think the kind of energy of the culture of L.A., or Hollywood, is that it’s OK to be yourself and that it’s OK to experience things and find who you are.

So, I didn’t feel like I needed someone to look to in order to be comfortable with that, but at the same time I think it was more so being comfortable with myself as opposed to me looking outwardly for comfort. It was just kind of me saying, “OK, it’s not a big deal; this is who I am and I can be who I wanna be and date who I wanna date,” and it was just being more relaxed about all of that.

But like I said before, I don’t think there is much fear maybe for a woman when it comes to being bisexual or being fluid or being queer or whatever anybody calls it. I think in that regard, maybe I had an easier time. And then my family is not typical in terms of that: My mom has always said when I was young, before I even thought of any of that stuff, that if her kids were (LGBTQ) she would just want the person to be cute! (Laughs) But that’s not everybody’s story.CA: But you were also a young star who was on shows for kids on Nickelodeon where I imagine the expectations were high to be – KP: Perfect. Yeah, I felt it more there in that regard than in terms of my sexuality.

CA: Did being a child star ever stifle your sexuality?

KP: Mmm… I don’t think that it stifled my sexuality. I think other things stifled my sexuality, like my idea of who I had to be or what type of young woman I was, how people viewed me. Honestly, I never felt stifled by – I think I felt maybe confused by it at a certain time, but just as confused as I would’ve been in general with understanding my feelings with dating and all that kind of stuff. But I allowed my journey to be my own and, like I said, I grew up in a community of people where many of my friends were also gay or they were fluid and we didn’t really put different things on ourselves in terms of our sexual identity. We was just kind of like, “You know, I’m going on a date with so-and-so, I’m doing this.” It wasn’t seen as anything more than just us being ourselves. And maybe that’s the millennial way. Maybe I got born in the prefect generation.

CA: Yeah, I got on the wrong boat. I got on the one before you.KP: (Laughs) I’m telling you: These millennials are accepting. I read something as a teen that was telling me how James Dean was sexually fluid and that was the first time I had ever seen or heard that term. I thought it was really cool that it was a male who was open and being honest about something like that in that era. I remember when I saw that I really loved it because I think often I feel like it’s much harder for males to have that idea than it is for women. People assume when a man dates another man he can’t date another woman, and I’ve had many friends and many relationships with people who I felt like that was a really big crutch for them in being OK with their own identity because the reality was they weren’t in the closet, they weren’t hiding. They did like men, but they did like women. And the unfortunate thing about it was that a lot of women couldn’t accept that (he

was with men), so when I saw that I remember seeing that thing with James Dean and I really loved it because I’m like, “What’s the problem if a guy likes both?”

CA: There’s a double standard there.KP: I hate it.

CA: What kind of attention did “I Don’t Belong to You” get you from queer women? Were more slipping into your DMs? KP: (Laughs) Yeah, sure! I think a lot of people were kind of like, “Oh, I knew it,” or something like this. And that’s always funny. I think if anything would be quote-unquote “obvious” it would just be my openness as a human being. I truly believe sexuality is a spectrum. I believe you’re meant to find love wherever it finds you, so if it happens to find you (with) the same sex, what a travesty it would be that you denied it because you’ve been walking around your life the whole 10 years being a heterosexual. I worked with a director once, and in just regular conversation it happened to slip out that she was married to a woman. What I loved about her is that she said, “But I dated men for many years; I just happened to find true love with this woman.” And I loved that because that’s what life is. We put so many labels on stuff to be gay, straight, dah dah dah dah, when in reality, in the ancient times, it was seen as very special when you could

find love with the same sex. And in the Native American community it was called “two spirit” and I think in our Western culture we work so hard to define everybody and everything that we lose the soul. I think that’s what I also loved about Pimp. It isn’t about the label. She found love in this little girl and they found protection in each other as children, so I mean, that’s where they found love. It’s not about what their label is, it’s about the fact that they found love. And I feel like people should stop trying to make everybody fit into a box and just let people live their life. Define themselves the way they choose.

CA: You have new music and visuals on the way this year. And it’s been exciting to see more out LGBTQ artists like Troye

Sivan and Hayley Kiyoko express their queerness without reservation... KP: Oh yeah, I love Hayley!

CA: Will your sexual fluidity influence the narrative and visuals of your upcoming project?KP: I haven’t thought about it just yet. With the visuals that I have, a lot of them are just kind of dancing or little bitty things here and there. But if I feel like there is the opportunity to say something, then I always will. Just like when I did “I

Don’t Belong to You,” it was a statement piece. If I’m trying to specifically say something, then yes, because again I feel like my sexuality is who I find love with, so my music will mirror that.

CA: I don’t even really have a question, but I just need to acknowledge that, with ’Joyful Noise’, you worked with Dolly Parton and Queen Latifah in the same movie.KP: Man, I was so happy that I got to do that, OK?! Because it was just so cool. I love Queen Latifah – that was my third acting project with her. And working with Dolly Parton was just so, so special and awesome because she’s such a sweet, sweet woman and she would bring us fudge bars on set.

CA: Homemade fudge bars?KP: Homemade fudge bars. And I would be so scared on set when I had to do my kissing scene and she would just be there to comfort me. I’ve always been a quote-unquote “tomboy” and also into girly stuff, but I’ve always felt more comfortable in more comfortable clothes – in sportswear, I always felt more comfortable, chill like that – and I remember asking her, “How are you beautiful like this every day? How can you do this?” She said, “I just made a choice when I was younger, and I wanted to be that way, so I get up every day and I make sure that it’s the way that I’m presented.”

I remember just thinking that was so amazing, and that was kind of my first lesson in “we are what we repeatedly do.” That was something she wanted to be a part of who she was – we know Dolly Parton as being fabulous 24/7, and it’s not an easy thing to do, so I really just loved that about her. I loved learning about her during that production. I would love to be like that.

CA: But then you think of all the time and energy it takes…. KP: Oh, child!

CA: Do you see yourself as a role model for queer black girls?KP: That’s such a hard one. I can’t tell someone what to see me as, but there are certain things that I feel could be communicated better in the world and so I use my platform for that. When I did my song “I Don’t Belong to You” I talked about that a lot. I talked also about gender fluidity, that you as a woman

aren’t defined by A, B, C and D, that you as a man aren’t defined by A, B, C and D. I speak a lot on being a black female, being a female, being a millennial; if any of those things attract somebody to say, “I like what she says, she’s a role model to me,” then of course that’s cool. But I don’t try to think too much about being a role model as much as I think about being myself and speaking on the issues that are important to me.

Chatting With Drag Race Veteran and Dumplin’ Star Ginger MinjBy Owen Keehnen

Ginger Minj, aka Joshua Allan Eads, has had a very busy couple of years. Born and raised in Lake County, Florida, the drag queen, actor and singer first achieved fame competing on the seventh season of RuPaul’s Drag Race (finishing as a runner-up) in 2015 and subsequently the second season of RuPaul’s Drag Race: All Stars.

But the self-proclaimed “Glamour Toad” and show biz veteran is more than simply a Drag Race veteran. In 2016, Ginger released the album, Sweet T, and has a second CD, Clown Fucker, coming soon. In 2017, Eads married his husband at the DragCon with Michelle Visage officiating and in 2018 voiced the character Lemon Chiffon in the Netflix original series, Super Drags. In 2018 Ginger also appeared in such films as Miss Arizona, A Queen for the People, and the Dolly-driven hit, Dumplin’ in which Ginger plays Candee Disch.

Recently I had the chance to catch up with Ginger and one thing was clear, there are no signs of Ginger/Joshua slowing down anytime soon.

Owen Keehnen: Congrats on the success of Dumplin’. It is such a charming movie and you were terrific as Candee Disch. How did that role come about?Ginger Minj: The role, as written, was a two-line/one day cameo named Paige Turner. I filmed the audition in the back of a nightclub and said, “I love this story and I need the money, please cast me!” just kind of as a joke. To my surprise, I got a phone call from my agent saying, “The producers want to fly you out to Atlanta for a meeting.” So I rearranged some stuff, flew out there for a few hours, got gussied up in my best Dolly Parton drag and sat in a room with the writer, director and producer. We talked about life for over an hour, laughing, crying and everything in between. Before I could

even do the actual audition, I had to get back to the airport to make my next flight. The director, Anne, said, “I just wish there was more for you to do!” So I said, “you’re the director, she’s the writer and she’s the producer. If you want me to do more, write it, produce it and direct it!” then I blew a kiss and ran away. A while later my agent called me again and said, “What the hell did you say to them in that audition?” I thought I had blown it, so I told him the story. He said, “Well, it worked, they’ve rewritten it just for you. Pack your bags, you’re going to Atlanta for two weeks!” And I did. And it was wonderful.

OK: The message of the movie is so important, about the right and wrong of body types and belonging, etc. What sort of feedback have you been getting because of the film?GM: Everything has been so positive and uplifting. It’s so nice to be part of a movement that is recognizing the beauty in everyone.

OK: The movie also captures how that pressure can be so tough in high school. As a kid who grew up in Lake County, Florida, what were your high school years like?GM: I “home-schooled” through high school because I was a working actor, touring the country in shows like “Oliver!” and “Grease!” If it had an exclamation point at the end of the title, I probably did it. Before that, I attended Umatilla public school through 8th grade. They were about what you’d expect. I was popular with the girls and bullied by the boys. I excelled at art and music, but somehow miraculously always had a note to get me out of sports and shop. Of course I was picked on for my weight, but I was so focused on defending myself from the anti-gay bullies that my weight became secondary.

OK: I read somewhere that you

“revamped” the hair department on the Dumplin’ set. What does that mean?GM: I don’t know that “revamped” is the right word, but I certainly taught them a few tricks of the drag trade! Creating an illusion is all about smoke and mirrors. The proportions have to be exaggerated in order to achieve the proper look. Small, flat hair just doesn’t cut it when you’re 5’3” and 220lbs with no neck. I showed them how to create Smoky Mountains out of molehills by stacking, pinning and backcombing each piece. Our motto in the south has always been “The Higher the Hair, the Closer to God.”

OK: Dolly Parton’s music and her spirit are a big part of the movie. Did Dolly visit the set?GM: She was supposed to, but the weather was so bad she never made it. I met her many years before at Dollywood. My family used to go twice a year: summer and winter. She was doing a big Christmas concert one year and, afterwards, did a signing. My parents held me up so she could sign my Dollywood shirt, she ruffled my hair and said, “You’re gonna be a little star,

pumpkin!” I blame this all on her!

OK: You know, the book fostered a sequel… any talk about a Dumplin’ 2?GM: I’ve read Puddin’ and it’s fantastic. It’s all about Maddie Baillio’s character, Millie. We all adore Millie and I would love to be a part of the continuing story. Someone said, “There are no drag queens in the sequel” but a) my character didn’t exist in the novel version of Dumplin’, b) I’m practically Millie’s drag mom at this point, and c) I’ve been known to play a man before, too! Let’s hope it turns into a full-blown franchise so I eventually get my own spinoff called Pumpkin!

OK: My fingers are crossed. Tell me about the birth of Ginger Minj. GM: Head first and very painful.

OK: You call yourself a Glamour Toad; can you explain that?GM: I’ve never been conventionally attractive. My face is bottom heavy, my neck is very short, and I’m proportioned like a cartoon frog. Instead of letting other people use that against me, I decided to own it early on. If you own something, you decide what to do with it. I decided frogs were cute, and anything is gorgeous if you glue enough rhinestones and glitter on

it. I may never be what most people consider drop dead gorgeous, but I think there’s a very charming beauty to what I do.

OK: In some credits, you’re listed as Joshua Allan Eads as Ginger Minj. How much of an adopted persona is Ginger and how much does she vary from Joshua?GM: Well, Ginger is everything Joshua always wished he could be. I was very shy and very quiet when I was growing up. I was afraid to speak up for myself and I wanted to slip by unnoticed as much as possible. I was envious of the ladies at my Southern Baptist Church. They were always so put together, so over the top beautiful in their suits and hats, and they didn’t care what anyone else said, they had an unshakable confidence. I wanted to be like them. Ginger is based on these women – powerful, confident, polished, loving and unafraid to speak her mind.

OK: Congrats on your first album Sweet T. Care to talk about your follow up album, Clown Fucker?

GM: There’s not much to say except it really is coming! Soon! I’ve been working on it for a while now and I’m so proud because it is a complete 180 from Sweet T! Music reflects mood, and I was in such a dark place of loss and learning to cope when I did the first album. Now I’m four years older and in a much healthier, happier place. Clown Fucker reflects that. I can’t wait to unleash it into the world!

OK: You have been on RuPaul’s Drag Race, seventh season placing in the top three and returned to compete in All Stars. What is something about being on the show that people might not realize because of the editing?GM: We’re human. We have good days, bad days and days that fall somewhere in between. Reality television is a bubble that forces you to look at your mistakes and face the worst parts of yourself while trying to learn, grow, and survive elimination. Tensions are high, there’s a lot at stake, and sometimes your ass hangs out in the most embarrassing ways. I think I’ve learned so much about myself since my time on the show that I’d love to go back and share this whole new me.

OK: Are you still in contact with anyone from the show?GM: Absolutely. We shared this amazing experience that most people will never understand. It’s a weird bond that lasts forever. Most of my closest friends are from the show.

OK: You were married to your husband at DragCon 2017 by Michelle Visage. Tell me a little about that?GM: It was heaven. She is mom to many of us. I love Ru and am so thankful to every opportunity that she

has created, but Michelle is the one who is out there on the road with us, sharing these experiences outside of the show. When she found out I was dating Christopher, she insisted that she meet him. I flew him to Chicago to a gig she and I were doing together, she sized him up, asked him a bunch of questions and then told me I would be an idiot if I didn’t marry him. Two years later, when we were ready and it only made sense that she be a part of our big day since it was her idea in the first place! It was a beautiful experience.

OK: What projects are you working on now?GM: Too many to name! The new album is coming out soon, I just finished my first solo world tour during Christmas, another movie I did just inked a distribution deal, I’m hosting the Hater’s Roast world tour for the third year in a row, my one-woman DIVINE show has been getting great feedback from the workshops and is almost ready to hit the road, and my husband and I are trying to navigate the process of having our first child. There are a lot of irons in the fire, and I’m so grateful for each one of them!

OK: Are you making any New Year’s

resolutions?GM: Just to keep doing bigger and better. It’s been my resolution every year and it seems to be working in my favor so far!

We recently had the chance to speak with one of the many Chicago candidates for mayor, Bill Daley. Important for us, support of our LGBTQ community, the financial issues facing the city, as well as his vision for Chicago moving forward. Here’s what he had to say.

Nick Wille: In your career to-date, name your proudest accomplishment?    Bill Daley: Being Chief of Staff for President Barack Obama stands out as one of my proudest accomplishments. Through my close interaction with the President, I gained a deeper respect for him as a leader and a genuine person. I’m proud of the progress we made as a country during my time at the White House, and of the example of leadership we were able to set.

NW: Many voters are sensitive to a "Daley Dynasty" in the mayor's office. How do you respond to critics who say another Mayor Daley will not move Chicago forward? BD: I’m Bill Daley. While some in my family have spent their careers in politics, I’ve taken another route. Now I’m running for mayor with a focus on the future. I’ve laid out ambitious plans to make Chicago a global leader. My goal is to grow Chicago to a city of three million people, reduce shootings by 75%, and grow our manufacturing sector by $20B through better job training, investments in new companies, and attracting businesses to the South and West Sides. I am completely focused on the future of our great city, and I think voters can see that as well.

NW: Tell us about your past and future support of the LGBTQ community?BD: In 2013 I stood up for same-sex marriage to leaders in my faith. Cardinal George withheld funding from immigrant groups, in part because those groups disagreed with the church on same sex marriage. I publicly pushed Cardinal George to reconsider his position. I thought the church was in the wrong, and I thought it was

important to publicly put pressure on its leadership to get on the right side of history.

As I look ahead, it’s important to me that all Chicagoans live in a safe, inclusive and welcoming city. We are a diverse city, and diversity is one of our greatest strengths. I am focused on improving economic opportunity and inclusion for Chicagoans across the city by creating more good jobs in neighborhoods that need them and investing on the South and West Sides. I am also dedicated to bringing diverse voices like the LGBTQ community to the table and engaging Chicagoans across the city.

NW: If elected, what are the top three issues you will immediately get to work on?BD: It’s simple: If we cannot get crime under control, nothing else we do will matter.

Last year we topped 500 murders and had almost 3,000 shootings, an average of more than eight people every day whose lives are shattered by gun violence. Many of these crimes happen in neighborhoods that have been left behind by a downtown-first approach to economic development, but people in every neighborhood are beset by too many carjackings, break-ins, assaults and murders. We accept these numbers or tell ourselves there is nothing we can do, and that is wrong. There’s plenty we can do, and we’ve seen strategies work in other large cities in America.

We must set higher expectations and demand safer streets in every neighborhood. We need to invest in community policing and make sure people in every neighborhood know their beat officers. We must tackle illegal gun possession and go after gangs. We must invest heavily in violence prevention programs that work and give young people better economic opportunities, so they don’t turn to gangs.

NW: Corruption in Chicago's City Hall (and in Illinois) seems to dominate the regional news cycle lately. If elected, how will you combat corruption so the public feels more confident the city government is truly serving them?BD: I started my campaign by releasing a comprehensive ethics plan that included a prohibition on lobbying by family members or campaign staffers. I also committed to serving no more than two terms, and I promised to do no fundraising during my first three years in office. I’ve also proposed shrinking the city council from 50 to 15 aldermen, prohibiting outside employment, putting the city council under the same inspector general as

the rest of the city, and requiring greater transparency for communications between aldermen and city departments.

Chicagoans deserve to have a mayor, aldermen and city government who work for the best interest of the city, not to benefit themselves.

NW: Given the rhetoric within the highest levels of the U.S. government, specifically on immigration, transgender rights/equality and climate change, how will you position Chicago on these heated national topics?BD: Chicago is and must always remain a welcoming and sanctuary city. We must be a city free from harassment, bullying and hate speech. I am committed to inclusion and making sure diverse voices have a seat at the table. The best way to show how Chicago values diverse voices is through action. From day one of my campaign I worked to build a culturally competent staff. My campaign manager, Jorge Neri, is Latino. He was born in Mexico and grew up in Chicago’s Little Village. Together, we have put together a diverse and talented team that includes people with different ethnicities, races, religion, gender identities and sexual orientation. My administration will

continue this commitment to diversity by building a team that reflects our city’s population.

NW: From taxes on items we buy to taxes on properties we own, Chicago is known as a highly taxed city. What can voters expect from you to ease the burden on their wallets while still addressing the financial woes of the city?   BD: I have committed to no new property taxes in at least the first year. Chicago residents are now seeing the impacts of new, higher property assessments, and they are already over-burdened. Given the size of our budget issues, all other revenue options must be on the table along with needed reforms to city government and a realistic look at our pension crisis. I will streamline city government and push for a constitutional amendment so we can make realistic changes that will make our pension situation sustainable.

We can’t tax our way out of this problem without driving residents away, and we can’t cut our way out without sacrificing our quality of life. We need to have honest conversations about realistic solutions that will allow the city to grow.

NW: As a mayoral candidate in a

crowded ring, share three personal attributes that set you apart from the others?BD: Experienced--My time working in President Clinton and President Obama's administration's and my time in business give me a unique understanding of how government and the private sector can work together to solve some of our most challenging problems.

Calm under pressure--Whether in the Situation Room or in the private sector, I stay calm in tough circumstances.

Uniter--I have spent my career bringing together people to solve the problems that divide us.

Lift, Sprint & Eat your way to higher testosterone levels, naturally!By Lee Gonzalez

GRAB LEEFI

TNES

S

Testosterone is a hormone that helps increase lean muscle mass, strong dense bones and overall is crucial for great health.  After the age of 30, more so 35, men start losing an average of 2-3% of testosterone in the body naturally. Low testosterone levels lead to depression, low sex drive, obesity, low energy and osteoporosis.  Men with low testosterone also have higher chances of heart disease. Other issues include estrogen levels rising and muscle atrophy (loss of muscle). Eating the right healthy foods and workouts can help you naturally gain the testosterone levels your body needs. Multi-joint exercises, specifically large muscle groups, and lifting heavy are the best ways to boost up the test production. The more muscles incorporated in the workout and the heavier you go, the better the results your building of natural testosterone will have. I recommend having a 3/4 max rep on each workout performed. For example, if you’re doing a bench

press, the weight will be heavy enough to where you can’t perform more than 4 repetitions. This helps maximize your body’s effort in building test.  Large muscle groups should be targeted more. Back and legs are perfect for this. One of the best exercises is the dead-lift. Other great workouts include chest press and seated shoulder press. Seated shoulder press, because you’re able to lift more. Each exercise should be performed with 5 sets with the max of 4 reps each. Sprints are another way to help build testosterone naturally. Sprinting at max speed can usually only be performed for up to 15 seconds. It requires 100% of effort to fully be effective. Because the intensity is so strong, testosterone is able to build naturally at great levels. I recommend doing 10 sets of all out sprints. Try to last around 10 seconds at full speed. Take 2 minutes break between each set. Foods with great amounts of Vitamin D, K, Zinc & Magnesium are

amazing with testosterone production. Foods like spinach, eggs and shellfish are effective test building sources. Eating enough protein is also important, while cutting down bad fats, sugar and high carbs. Start being cautious of what you eat and how much, add in heavy lifting exercises and occasional sprints to build that toxic masculinity body of your dreams, naturally!

Other Unspecified OutcastsBy Holly Maholm At last Tuco broke the silence. “So you’re saying… horses just like Biscuit and Blossom – but younger and in perfect health – get shipped off to slaughter just cause some owner gets bored of them? Or maybe he doesn’t want to spend any more money on oats or alfalfa for a horse that’s never going to win a race?” He went on. “You know, Holly, until this moment, I had always thought that horses were the lucky ones. Cause nobody tries to talk a horse into doing anything. They just put a rope around his neck and tell him, ‘Come this way’ and ‘do this’ or ‘do that,’ and the horse will obey.” “But for us, we had to endure years of ‘education’ during which we were subjected to all sorts of fables and legends and scriptures, all of which were designed to get us to do what somebody else wanted us to do. So we ended up just as much ‘led around on a halter’ as the horses. “Nevertheless – despite all that brainwashing we endured – the three of us made the decision to live the life of an ‘outlaw’ – making our home here in the wilderness and obeying no man’s law. We made that choice, but it’s not a choice that horses get to make. They cannot declare themselves ‘outlaws’ and live outside the bounds of that pitiless system into which they were born. In their world, either you please your

human master or they ship you off to be somebody’s dinner.” The men lapsed into an even deeper silence, and it was Fender who first emerged to share his thoughts. “So you’re offering us jobs, Holly, and we can see how you might think we would be willing to help you out, considering all you’re trying to do for the horses, and for your tranny friends. And don’t think we don’t see that you’re just as much ‘outlaws’ as we are. “But here’s the problem. In society today, every ‘job’ is a ‘contract’ between employer and employee. And ‘contracts’… well, they have a lot of clauses that are non-negotiable. Like there’s always taxes taken out, and deductions for retirement and disability and medical; and often there’s a union involved (with all its rules and dues); and government agencies that keep track of how many hours you work, and what race or gender you are, and whether driving a chariot constitutes ‘hazardous duty’ for which you should get paid time and a half, plus a free helmet compliments of OSHA. “And don’t forget, Holly, all those contracts – and all those clauses that nobody understands – are enforced by courts and cops and prosecutors, and at the very top, the judges – and the prisons and jails they oversee – are backed-up by the army, with all its guns

and tanks and shit. “So if you study this ‘system’ as we have, you’ll see that every one of those judges and prosecutors is a member of that one profession which the three of us have sworn to resist: The one profession that is willing to perpetuate a system so merciless and cruel. I’m talking about lawyers.” “Honestly, we’d like to help Blossom and Biscuit and many more like

them. But we have sworn to live as ‘outlaws’ – outside the reach of courts and cops and lawyers.” I was unsure how to respond, so to buy time, I picked up a stray apple from the ground and walked over to feed it to Scallywag. He whispered in my ear, “Gee, Holly, maybe you’d like me to assume my disguise as a Dire Lawyer?” I gave him a sharp and resounding smack on his rump, then turned back to address the men. “Okay. So if I thought any of you were ‘more civilized’ or ‘more highly evolved’ than a horse, I might offer you ‘employment’ (including everything that word implies). But I don’t. As near as I can tell, none of you is any ‘better’ than a horse – no more entitled to live a useful, rewarding life than any other creature we might find living in a stable. “So here’s my offer. You will be invited to join that same ‘herd’ of horses and trannies and ‘other unspecified outcasts’ to which Blossom and Biscuit and I belong. You will be expected to provide your labor – and all your honest and sincere loyalty – to the herd and to its leader, a woman named Dot. “In return, you will be provided with all your needs – warm and dry shelter, adequate food and drink, medical care when you need it, and the support and protection of the herd. “And Fender, just to set your mind at rest, I can assure you that we do not have any lawyers in the herd – none currently practicing at this time, anyway.” (To be continued)

Broken Nose Theatre PresentsGIRL IN THE RED CORNERPlaying Through March 2nd

at The Den Theatre

Broken Nose Theatre continues its seventh season with the Midwest premiere of Stephen Spotswood’s drama Girl In The Red Corner, directed by Elizabeth Laidlaw, playing February

1 – March 2, 2019 at BNT’s resident home, The Den Theatre (2A), 1331 N. Milwaukee Ave. in Chicago’s Wicker Park neighborhood. Girl In The Red Corner, will feature BNT company member Elise Marie Davis and artistic associate Kim Boler with Michelle Courvais, August N. Forman and Mark West. Unemployed and fresh from an abusive marriage, Halo steps into a gym one day and signs up for mixed martial arts lessons. Her family thinks it’s ridiculous. Her trainer thinks she’s soft. But none of them know the anger that fuels her ambition. When it’s rage that brought you into the cage, are you really ready to see what winning looks like? Winner of the Helen Hayes Award for Best New Play, Girl In The Red Corner, is a visceral, fast-moving tale of self-discovery, one that allows women to take centerstage in a world so often dominated by men.

Comments Artistic Director Elise Marie Davis, “Girl in the Red Corner is a show that allows women and other marginalized voices to step into a story (and an arena) so often dominated by men, all while being unapologetically messy and complicated and real. There's something extremely empowering about allowing women to be the anti-hero, about giving us a platform to tell stories of characters who often muddle the best of intentions with poor execution. We are thrilled to have director Elizabeth Laidlaw, fight choreographer John Tovar, and a host of other guest artists joining us for this production. Broken Nose is proud to bring this play and these characters to Chicago audiences, with their scrapes, scars and bruises on display for all to see.” Tickets are currently available at www.brokennosetheatre.com.

About Face Theatre, Presents The Midwest Premiere

of THE TOTAL BENT Playing Through March 10th

Haven Theatre, in association with About Face Theatre, presents the Midwest premiere of The Total Bent, a dynamic new rock show about fathers, sons, social upheaval and the choice between salvation and selling out. Directed by Jeff Award-winning director Lili-Anne Brown with music direction by Jermaine Hill, the new musical features text by Stew and music and

lyrics by Stew and Heidi Rodewald, the creative team behind the Tony Award-nominated Best Musical Passing Strange. The Total Bent is playing now until March 10, at The Den Theatre's Janet Bookspan Theatre, 1331 N. Milwaukee Ave. The Total Bent features Breon Arzell, Robert Cornelius, Gilbert Domally, Frederick Harris, Jermaine Hill, Eric Lindahl and Michael Turrentine. Musicians include Kamille Dawkins, James Garcia, Christian Moreno and Anthony Rodriguez. When a British record producer arrives in Montgomery, Alabama to hook Marty Roy, a young black musical prodigy, he launches us back into Marty’s tumultuous upbringing. The son of a gospel star and self-proclaimed healer, Marty spent his childhood writing the songs that have made his charismatic father famous. But in a nation on the verge of social upheaval, with the rising heat from the street guiding his pen, Marty finds himself at odds with his spiritually forceful father as he strives to create a masterpiece that will change America – no matter

the cost. A funny, fiery, one-of-a-kind show, The Total Bent is about the passions that divide a father and son as they make their music and make their choice between salvation and selling out. Comments Haven Artistic Director Josh Sobel, “Ever since seeing their Tony Award-winning Passing Strange in 2008, I have deeply desired to present a work of Stew and Heidi's, and as such The Total Bent – fresh out of New York's venerated Public Theatre – is a true dream come true. I am beyond grateful to Megan Carney, Alana Parvey Zalas and everyone at About Face Theatre for their support and partnership in helping us realize the creative vision of this inspiring and provocative piece of new music theatre. All of us at Haven are thrilled to be working with such an iconic Chicago arts institution in presenting this strikingly urgent work, one that challenges all of us on issues of race, faith, politics and family in a Christian America.” Tickets are currently available at haventheatrechicago.com

GLAAD will be honoring Madonna with the Advocate for

Change Award at the 30th Annual GLAAD Media Awards

GLAAD’s Advocate for Change Award is presented to a person who, through their work, changed the game for LGBTQ people around the world. Madonna is the second person, and the first woman, to receive this award. President Bill Clinton was the first recipient of this award in 2013. Madonna’s support for the LGBTQ community started at the beginning of her career during the HIV/AIDS crisis in the 1980s. She performed at AIDS benefit concerts, created a benefit dance marathon, and spoke out and demanded action at a time when AIDS was too often invisible in the media. Madonna also included a leaflet in her album Like a Prayer entitled “The Facts about AIDS” in which she gave fans crucial information about AIDS. More recently, Madonna has continued to use her platform to support the LGBTQ community, speaking out against anti-LGBTQ laws, policies, and practices. Madonna has spoken out for LGBTQ equality in Romania, Malawi, Russia and more and she continues to advocate for equality in the United States. She has also spoken against bullying of LGBTQ youth and related LGBTQ youth suicide. In 2013, when presenting Anderson Cooper with the Vito Russo Award at the 24th Annual GLAAD Media Awards, she dressed as a Boy Scout in protest of the Boy Scouts of America’s ban on gay members. Madonna has also participated in intersectional advocacy, speaking at the first Women’s March on Washington for women’s equality, and speaking out against Trump’s child detention policy. When responding to the imprisonment of two men who had been jailed in Malawi for marrying, Madonna released a statement that completely summarizes her commitment and support of the LGBTQ community, writing: "As a matter of principle, I believe in equal rights for all people, no matter what their gender, race, color, religion, or sexual orientation. This week, Malawi took a giant step backward. The world is filled with pain and suffering; therefore, we

must support our basic human right to love and be loved.” For information on how you can attend this year’s GLAAD Media Awards, visit glaad.org/mediaawards.

ASJA Honors  11 Young LGBTQ+ Writers

The American Society of Journalists and Authors has honored 11 young writers, between the ages of 14 and 25, for essays submitted in the organization’s call for personal stories from gay and transgender youth. The essay competition was made possible as part of a $35,000 national reporting project on the topic of “Gender Identity: What's the Cost?” “These young writers have exposed a compelling need for society to pay close attention to the stress, anxiety and depression that they have experienced in their journeys,” says Milt Toby,  ASJA President and a member of ASJA’s advisory committee on the national reporting project. “At ASJA, we appreciate the fact that we can honor these writers. And, we are glad they have written their stories to create a deeper understanding of this very complicated issue.” ASJA’s national reporting project focuses on the mental health challenges experienced by LGBTQ+ individuals. The first-ever national study of lesbian, gay and bisexual students’ health published in 2016, found that gay and bisexual youth are four times more likely to attempt suicide than their heterosexual counterparts, according to reports issued at that time by the Centers of Disease Control. The same year, a study done by the National Center for Transgender Equality found that 40 percent of transgender adults reported attempting suicide. Among writers honored for their essays are first place winners: Hannah Good of Bowling Green, KY; Lara Danger Detrick of Westerville, Ohio; and Isabella, an anonymous writer who attends college in Washington, D.C. First runners-up in the competition went to: Sarah Bobrowsky of Davis, Calif.; Ellis Blackstone, of Westerville, Ohio; and Tatyana Bellamy-Walker, of New York, N.Y. Five additional writers received honorable mentions. Those writers include: Dally Jacobus, of Delaware, Ohio; Leonardo Menchaca, of Westerville, Ohio; North Henninger of New York, N.Y.; Melanie Quinjano, of San Diego, Calif.; and Olivia McLernon, of New York, N.Y. All essay writers will receive monetary awards for their work. Essays can be viewed: asja.org/About-ASJA/

ASJA-Charitable-Trust/Gender-Identity-Project/Youth-Essay-Contest. “I am extremely proud of these 11 courageous writers who stepped forward to write about their innermost feelings,” says Sherry Beck Paprocki, who initiated the national reporting project as ASJA president in 2017-18. “I am pleased that ASJA has been able to shed light on a topic that for too long has only been discussed only in the shadows.” In addition to the youth essay competition, ASJA has also provided writing grants to more than a dozen professional writers who continue to report on LGBTQ+ and mental health-related topics. Among professional writers and publications that have participated in the project to date are: Megy Karydes, Chicago Health; Sandra Gurvis, Columbus Monthly; Estelle Erasmus, Your Teen Magazine for Parents; Danielle Corcione, for Teen Vogue; Stephanie Bouchard, for Pine Tree Watch, the online site for the Maine Center for Public Interest Reporting; Donna Jackel, The Progressive; Paul Nicolaus, for the trade publication Managed Health Care Connect; Phyllis Hanlon, New England Psychologist; Milly Dawson, Everyday Health; Bex vanKoot, Medium; and Maggie Ginsberg, Madison magazine.

Revry Coming Soon to Comcast’s Xfinity X1

First global LGBTQ+ streaming network, Revry, announced a deal with Comcast that will soon bring its service to Comcast’s Xfinity X1. With Revry’s authentically diverse mix of films, series, music, podcasts and originals, the forthcoming launch on Xfinity X1 is part of Revry’s plans to continue to expand its reach.  One of several partnerships the streaming network expects to announce this year, Revry’s availability on X1 bolsters Revry’s cumulative reach to over 50 million viewers across platforms. At launch, Xfinity X1 customers will be able to subscribe to the service and access it over the Internet by saying “Revry” into their X1 Voice Remote. Additionally, they can simply say “Pride” or “LGBTQ” to access Xfinity X1’s broader LGBTQ Film and TV on demand destination, the first diverse, community endorsed LGBTQ entertainment experience in the home that features one of the most complete libraries of LGBTQ entertainment, soon to include Revry available anywhere. X1 customers will be able to sign up for Revry directly on X1, and add it to their service for $6.99 per month. “Launching on X1 will be a game changer and allow Revry to bring more authentic LGBTQ+ stories and content to millions more homes in the US,” states Revry CEO Damian Pelliccione. “Our dream of becoming easily accessible to people who need to hear these stories from around the world is one step closer to becoming a reality!”

KACEY MUSGRAVES WINS FOUR GRAMMY AWARDS,

PREMIERES VIDEO FOR NEW SINGLE "RAINBOW"

It has been a monumental year for critically-acclaimed singer-songwriter Kacey Musgraves, who took home four GRAMMY Awards including Album of The Year and Best Country Album for her #1 third studio album Golden

Hour, Best Country Solo Performance for “Butterflies,” and Best Country Song for “Space Cowboy.” People predicted that “Kacey Musgraves just might be the GRAMMY Awards’ golden girl this year,” and Kacey has now made history as the first female solo artist to win Best Country Album twice. These wins bring Kacey’s career total up to six.  In tandem with her breathtaking performance of new single “Rainbow” on the 61st Annual GRAMMY Awards, Kacey has shared the song’s official video. The cinematic visual is a heartfelt message of hope for anyone facing adversity, echoing the song’s lyrics that “it’ll all be alright.” Upon Golden Hour’s release, GQ declared the track “arguably the best song she’s ever recorded,” describing it as “an emotional wallop that’ll knock you sideways if you’re not prepared,” and Noisey pronounced it “a stunner, which makes majesty out of familiar balladry.” The single has been serviced simultaneously to AC, Hot AC, Triple A and Country radio. Listen to and watch “Rainbow” at http://strm.to/Rainbow.

CALLING ALL CAPTAINS RELEASES NEW EP “NOTHING

GROWS HERE”

Canadian quintet Calling All Captains is celebrating the release of their Equal Vision Records debut,  Nothing Grows Here. The EP, which features hit singles "Chasing Ghosts" and "Disconnected," can be streamed now on Spotify and Apple Music. Calling All Captains will be bringing their pop punk melodies to the U.S. this winter in support of the upcoming release. The six week run kicks off next month and features support throughout from Settle Your Scores, Gardenside, Gold Steps, Brigades, Felicity, and Makari. Starting out in a small basement in St. Albert, lined with flags and posters of their favourite bands, Calling All Captains have been working tirelessly to grow their art since they formed in February of 2014. To date, the band has released two EP's - A Way With Words (2014), and Disconnect (2016) and set up and executed several self-funded tours to support them, fearlessly cutting their teeth to earn every inch of traction. "This is what we love, and this is what we want to do. So, we make it happen" shares bassist Nick Malychuk. After a brief break in 2017 and some lineup changes, Captains came back

stronger and more determined than ever, steadfast in their resolve to continue writing and growing as people, and as artists. From their latest single amassing 500,000 plays on Spotify as an unsigned band, to touring across Canada and the UK and landing a spot on the 2015 Vans Warped Tour. Calling All Captains will be performing March 9 at Penny Road Pub 545 Penny Rd, Barrington, IL For a full list of dates, or to purchase tickets, visit: www.facebook.com/Callingallcaptainsband.

MARINA UNVEILS BRAND NEW SINGLE “HANDMADE HEAVEN”

Multifaceted, award-winning and platinum-selling pop innovator Marina (previously Marina and the Diamonds) returns with her eagerly anticipated new single "Handmade Heaven." Marina’s first solo material in four years, "Handmade Heaven" is released today via Atlantic Records. Produced by GRAMMY award-winner Joel Little (Lorde, Khalid, Sam Smith), "Handmade Heaven" is a lush, surging slice of piano-laced pop and a welcome reintroduction to Marina’s distinctive, ethereal vocals. The powerful, self-penned track finds Marina imagining a world as simple as the beautiful creatures and nature that surround her. "Handmade Heaven" is the first taste of Marina’s forthcoming new album following a three-year hiatus from the music industry. Marina used her break as a period of reflection and to rediscover her authentic self, as opposed to the artist and persona (‘and the Diamonds’) she had lived and breathed since signing her record deal at the age of 22. As part of her journey, she created MarinaBook as a vehicle to talk about topics outside of music that felt important to her (social media, material status, mental health, psychology) and went back to university to study human personality and attachment theory. Marina has spent the past two years writing and recording the new record across London, Sweden and LA with esteemed names including Noonie Bao, Sam De Jong, Oscar Görres, Camille Purcell, Justin Parker and Joe Janiak. "Handmade Heaven" premiered on YouTube and can be watched here: https://youtu.be/GiOGlYjKgX8
