Buying a kitchen that fits
Replacing your kitchen is a big decision and a costly process so it’s good to go into it knowing all the facts. Daniel Barr from Anglia Factors in Martlesham shares his tips with us as he explains the process of buying a bespoke kitchen.

One of the oldest in the county and without a doubt one of
the best, Woodbridge Golf Club was formed largely due to
the work of Major Howey.
At a “largely-attended meeting” in 1893 the club was
founded and, after a suitable ground was selected, more
than 40 gentlemen put their names down to pay the annual
subscription of 21 shillings.
Major J E W Howey announced that he would guarantee the
rent of the land “for a year or two till the club had got a good
start” and by the end of the meeting Major Howey had been
elected as the club’s first President.
Progress was swift. At the first AGM on January 31, 1895,
approval was given for a clubhouse to be built. Mr F J W
Wood, the new Captain, arranged for Wrinch & Sons to
complete the work at a cost of £300.
In 1909 an Exhibition Match was staged between James Taylor
and James Braid, two of the original “Great Triumvirate”
along with Harry Vardon. Braid set a new course record of
65 and was to return to the club many times after the Great
War to advise on course changes.
In 1930 a golf writer described Woodbridge as a golfer’s paradise,
admiring the wiry heathland turf and fine panoramic view of the
surrounding county from the 10th (now the 9th) tee.
History

Between the wars judicious work by the committee saw them
buy various pockets of land to extend the club’s boundaries
and, in 1953, the remainder of the Bristol estates came up for
sale and was purchased for £1400.
As the club’s financial position improved, a new clubhouse
was built at a cost of £50,000, which opened on April 24,
1969 and, when the Lion’s Den and 14 acres of land became
available, it too was purchased for £5,000 and provided most
of the ground needed to build a nine-hole course at a cost
of £6,300.
The great storm of October 1987 proved to be an ill wind
that blew Woodbridge GC some good fortune since adjoining
land, which had seen the trees flattened, was purchased from
the Forestry Commission and this allowed an extension to
the nine-hole course. The result is that our current Forest
course is now feted as one of the best nine-hole courses in
the Eastern Counties.

Golfers coming to Woodbridge are spoilt for choice with two
terrific courses, each different in character and offering their
own unique challenges to players of all abilities.
Heath Course
Designed in 1893 by the famous Scottish professional Davie
Grant and subsequently updated by James Braid, the 18-hole,
Par 70 (SSS 71) Heath course offers an intriguing and varied
test of golf. The 6,300-yard course features well separated
fairways fringed with heather, gorse, oak and pine with each
hole presenting a different challenge.
Well known for its sandy, free draining sub soil, the course
usually remains playable even after the heaviest rain and is
maintained to the highest standards throughout the year. It
provides a wonderful golfing experience, from both the quality
of the course itself and the environment in which it sits, being
the home of a number of rare species of wildlife.
Forest Course
Opened in 1972 and extended in 1996, the nine-hole Forest
course is one of the finest facilities of its kind in the area. At over
6,300 yards over 18 holes, the Par 70 (SSS 71) course offers an
extremely good test of golf as well as being a picturesque and
peaceful spot for enjoying the game. The course also benefits
from being free draining. This course really is a gem to add to
the main course.
About the Course
12 | www.woodbridgegolfclub.co.uk
If you have never played at Woodbridge you are in for a treat.
Make the most of your trip by learning about some of the
pitfalls that lie in wait and how to avoid them as you follow our
hole-by-hole tours.
Heath Course
Hole 1 - Par 4 - 346 Yards
A generous opening tee shot. Playing short of the marker pole
leaves a second shot from a flat lie to a green which slopes
away. For the longer hitter, the green is achievable but a short
chip shot is not that beneficial to a sloping green.
Hole 2 - Par 4 - 329 Yards
Precision from the tee and finding the fairway is vital. Any
shot into the trees on the right may well result in playing out
sideways. Judging the distance for the picturesque shot to an
elevated green is of the upmost importance since short and
long shots here are punished.
Hole 3 - Par 5 - 529 Yards
A good testing drive with two very penal bunkers awaiting
anything stray and, if you find them, the hopes of making a
five become unlikely. Once you have found the fairway the
hard work is not over, with a difficult blind shot over the hill.
The fairway bunker approaching the green looks closer to the
green than it really is!
Hole 4 - Par 4 - 330 Yards
A short par four where hitting the fairway is a premium. The
green nestles in amongst several bunkers and banks, whilst
detecting the wind can be tricky, particularly from the south.
Course Tour
www.woodbridgegolfclub.co.uk | 13
Hole 5 - Par 4 - 371 yards
One of the hardest holes on the course; a soft dogleg to the
right. A slightly pulled tee shot will follow the slope of this
right to left sloping fairway and run down into the gorse. The
hole lined by trees and gorse makes for a very difficult second
shot. The green is perched on a rise, with the front of the
green falling away to the fairway.
Hole 6 - Par 4 – 401 Yards
Time to ‘open your shoulders’. Aim your tee shot straight
down the middle to this wide, flat fairway. Find the middle of
the green and, despite how it looks, nearly every putt here is
straight so a real test of your putting stroke.
Hole 7 - Par 3 - 149 Yards
A gem of a short par three. The bunkers and green were
re-shaped in recent years and depending on wind direction
and pin placement, this hole can play anything from a six iron
to a wedge.
Hole 8 - Par 5 - 514 Yards
A dogleg right with a wide fairway allows one to go for length
over accuracy but, miss the fairway by a few yards, and wiry
heather makes for a tricky layup with cross bunkers perfectly
placed. For the long hitter, a good drive allows a shot to the
green but the fairway narrows considerably as you get close
to the green.
14 | www.woodbridgegolfclub.co.uk
Hole 9 –Par 3 - 198 yards
A downhill par three with a fantastic view of the green from
the elevated tee. Everything feeds in from the left hand side
with short or slightly pushed tee shots gathered up by the
greenside bunker. Leaving the ball on the left side of the green
will leave you with a treacherous downhill putt.
Hole 10 - Par 4 - 431 Yards
Statistically, the hardest hole on the course. A demanding
drive as the bunker can swallow up longer hitters. The green
is quite narrow and is guarded by bunkers either side. Par is
a good result.
Hole 11 - Par 4 - 392 Yards
A tee shot where the longer hitters don’t gain an advantage as
any well struck tee shot of 220 yards runs out to the bottom
of the fairway, leaving a wedge shot to the green. Keeping your
approach shot below the hole is a must as this severely sloping
green from back to front leaves little chance of a two putt from
above the hole, especially during the summer months when
the greens are at their quickest.
Hole 12 - Par 3 - 184 Yards
Aptly named as ‘Five Winds’, this par three is the hardest green
to find out of all the par three’s. Trying to work out the wind
direction can play havoc with club selection.
Hole 13 - Par 4 - 310 Yards
Standing on the tee with a generous sized fairway and a
short yardage for this par four this high stroke indexed hole
still requires thought. Play your ball up as close to the cross
bunkers as you dare gives you the best chance of a birdie with
a short pitch from a flat lie.
Course Tour Continued
www.woodbridgegolfclub.co.uk | 15
Hole 14 - Par 4 - 425 Yards
A stunning driving hole. Keep your drive as tight to the left of
the fairway as possible. Any drive down the middle will take
the slope and may miss the fairway right. A second shot into
the two-tiered green must find the right level and any slightly
wayward approach may find sand.
Hole 15 - Par 3 - 188 Yards
A picturesque par three surrounded with trouble as the green
is guarded by deep bunkers and lies in a stadium of gorse. The
ideal shot would be to land over the left side of the right hand
bunker, which will bring the ball into the middle of the green.
Hole 16 - Par 4 - 445 Yards
The longest par four on the course, usually playing into the
prevailing wind. A sloping left to right fairway demands an
accurate tee shot and the approach is best suited to rest short
of the hole, which will leave an uphill putt.
Hole 17 - Par 4 - 400 Yards
Another difficult hole with a blind tee shot. Ideally a fade is
required off the tee and the longer tee shot benefits from a
flatter lie, playing the approach uphill. This usually requires an
extra club into the green since anything short can run back
some distance.
Hole 18 - Par 4 - 357 Yards
A generous driving hole, although for the bigger hitters, the
cross bunkers on the dogleg call for a layup. Going into the
green with a short iron is made more difficult by the bottom
of the pin not being visible so judging distance to the green that
is sloping away from play is essential.
“One of the most enjoyable courses I have played” Mel Watt
16 | www.woodbridgegolfclub.co.uk
Forest Course
Hole 1 - Par 4 - 401 Yards
Aim your tee shot straight at the marker post, although longer
hitters may want to stay slightly left of this line. For your
approach shot allow for the gentle downhill slope in front of
the green.
Hole 2 - Par 3 - 178 Yards
A cracking short hole, with trouble all around. A severe slope
to the right of the green will gather a wayward shot, so play for
the left hand side of the green.
Hole 3 - Par 4 332 Yards
Although a relatively short par four, the sloping fairway means
that an accurate drive will be rewarded with a short iron
approach. The green nestles at the top of the slope so try to
leave the ball below the hole to leave an uphill putt.
Hole 4 - Par 5 - 553 Yards
Aim your tee shot to favour left of centre for the left to right
slope. For your second shot aim straight down the middle then
hit a positive shot into the green to avoid the deep bunkers
either side of the green.
Hole 5 - Par 4 - 389 Yards
Favour the left side of the fairway with your tee shot to open
up the green for your second shot. Then check your yardage
and club to safely hit the front half of the green. Over the back
of the green the gorse bushes are very close.
Hole 6 - Par 4 - 444 Yards
Aim your tee shot straight at the marker post. The fairway
slopes right to left so longer hitters may want to shape the ball
slightly left to right to avoid running out of room at the bottom
of the hill. For your second shot into the green, aim right of the
flag to allow for the right to left slope.
Course Tour Continued
www.woodbridgegolfclub.co.uk | 17
Hole 7 - Par 4 - 335 Yards
A very picturesque hole with the backdrop of the Heath
course. This sweeping left to right dogleg presents plenty of
problems, none more so than the deep bunkers protecting the
green. For your approach shot aim left of the flag to allow for
the left to right slope.
Hole 8 - Par 3 - 156 Yards
A tough par three requiring nothing else than a positive shot
into the middle of the green.
Hole 9 - Par 4 - 403 Yards
A great finishing hole for this nine. The ideal tee shot is to aim
down the left and allow the ball to move naturally down the
slight slope and around the tree. For your second shot, aim left
of the flag to avoid rolling off the green to the right down the
slope. A par here is always a good score!

The Junior Golf Academy was developed by our two PGA
Professionals and is overseen by our Junior Organiser, with
an aim to make the learning process as enjoyable as possible.
Sessions are available to all with an emphasis on being part of a
squad, with regular skills challenges for all levels of player.
Junior group classes are run throughout the year. Some will
take place on weekends, while others are scheduled for half-
term and the main school holidays.
Individual lessons can be 30 minutes, 45 minutes or an hour
and, while many golf centres charge similar prices for juniors
as they do adult golfers, at Woodbridge, juniors are given
favorable rates.

Here at Woodbridge GC we are able to offer a range of
practice areas where you will find our members diligently
working on improving their game.
The most noticeable is the practice putting green adjacent to
the first tee and the Golf Shop. For those wishing to work
on their short game, there is a full-sized practice green and
bunkers, which mirror the fine surface found on course as well
as a 50-yards chipping area; giving golfers the opportunity to
perfect those round-saving strokes.
The long game is not overlooked, with three all-weather
training mats available on a full-length warm up range close
to the first tee, appealing to golfers who like to hit some full-
length shots and see the ball flight before they head onto the
course. The main grass practice ground of over four acres
allows players to try all the shots and can be accessed by road.
For those short on time, there are warm-up nets available to
get rid of the cobwebs before taking to the course.

Woodbridge is an historic golf club with a rich heritage dating
back to the founding of our club in 1893. We know we have
something special here and nothing gives us greater pleasure
than to share the enjoyment of our magnificent courses with
people who may not have experienced it before.
One of the ways in which we can do this is by staging a number
of open competitions spread throughout the season aimed at
golfers from all walks of life and abilities.
Eastern Counties Cup
Held on Woodbridge Golf Club’s Heath Course, The Eastern
Counties Cup is the oldest and most acclaimed amateur open
competition in the region, having been held for the first time
in 1897.
World wars have caused breaks in the event but aside from
those the competition has been played continuously with the
best golfers from Suffolk, Norfolk, Essex and Cambridgeshire
competing for the venerable old trophy.
Ladies Open
There is always a warm welcome at Woodbridge for the ladies
and the Ladies Open attracts a full field of entries every year,
with players travelling from afar in an event usually played
on the first Thursday in August. The Heath Course is a real
challenge but with the Four-ball better-ball Stableford format
played over 18 holes, there is plenty of fun to be had. There is
a ‘competition’ handicap limit of 30.
