The message Jesus preached had reached them and threatened the détente they had attained with the Romans who had mandated that taxes had to be paid. Tragically, this made the Jewish people complicit in their own oppression. Jesus’ retort challenges the Pharisees and us to look beyond the obvious and remain focused on what belongs to God. Although paying taxes still rankles us, we recognize that they provide education, healthcare, a standard of living and more that could not be sustained otherwise. The common good, a principle of Catholic social teaching, can only be achieved and maintained if we come together in concern for one another. Today is World Mission Sunday. Through our generosity, we can extend our concern beyond our borders to our brothers and sisters who are in need in every corner of the world. Our contributions testify to the fact that we believe that all of humanity is from God and worthy of care. Jesus counters the Pharisees by asking whose image was stamped on their coin. For us, the important question goes beyond image. We are challenged to declare that it is Jesus, the son of the living God, who lives in our hearts, so that we might place love above all else. 2018 CATECHISM CLASSES REGISTRATION NOW OPEN
Registration is now open for our Pre-School, First Communion preparation classes for 2018. Classes will start on January 14, 2018. Our children become very well prepared for the Sacraments of First Holy Communion and Confirmation. We encourage all parents of age-appropriate children to register. The Parish is also offering pre-school catechism classes for children between ages 4-6.

Journeying through the RCIA at Santa Maria Goretti Parish
The Santa Maria Goretti Parish invites those adults and teenagers who would like to journey into learning more about the Catholic faith through the Sacraments of Baptism, Holy Communion and Confirmation, and to deepen their relationship to God, to join the RCIA program which starts this Fall. The RCIA (Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults).

World Mission Month
Today, we celebrate World Mission Sunday! We are called to offer our prayers and generous financial support, through the Society for the Propagation of the Faith, for the worldwide mission of Christ. We are asked to reach out to the peripheries, people in remote villages, towns and cities by using the witness and work of missionaries and local priests. Please keep all missionaries in your daily prayers.
Updating our Volunteer List
The Archdiocese requires all parishes to update the volunteer data base once a year. Therefore, we ask all TEAM LEADERS of the
various ministries to provide the following information:
1. Names and contact information of volunteers who have not registered and are volunteering in your Ministry

La nostra campagna di raccolta fondi sostiene il Newman Theological College, che si occupa dell’educazione dei nostri seminaristi, insegnanti di religione Cattolica, studiosi laici e cappellani. Together we Serve supports 11 different Catholic organizations. It works with local community organizations to create greater global justice and act in solidarity with the world’s most poor and vulnerable.
Starting next week, for the next three consecutive weeks, we are asking for donations to support our Newman Theological College, where seminarians, lay people, Catholic teachers, and chaplains are educated and trained for their diverse ministries.

I encourage families, too, to listen together to the Word of God. Through a careful listening to this Word, families encounter the Lord in their very midst and hear within the depths of their hearts his assurance of love and call to holiness and service. Here I suggest three simple ways by which our families can make the Word of God central to their daily living and draw from it guidance and peace.
Grace at Mealtime
In line with a specific request of the Holy Father, I ask that all our families return to the beautiful practice of praying before and after meals (cf. Laudato Si, 227). Together with our traditional prayer to God for the blessing of the meal and our sharing of it, this can be an opportunity to hear a line from Sacred Scripture and respond to it. To facilitate this, the Archdiocese has created a prayer card for use at mealtime. This was distributed to parishes in the Spring of 2016, and is available on our Archdiocesan website. Added to the traditional prayers, there is also on the card a verse from the Bible, offered as one small way to help families remain centered daily upon the Word of God. Families may wish to substitute the card’s biblical citation with others that I send out by Twitter on a weekly basis, and which are shared with parishes through the Quid Novum email bulletin for inclusion in their Sunday bulletin.

LA PAROLA DI DIO IN CASA
Voglio anche incoraggiare le famiglie ad ascoltare insieme la Parola di Dio. Mediante un attento ascolto della Sua Parola, le famiglie trovano il Signore al loro interno e sentono nel profondo del loro cuore una certezza di amore ed una chiamata alla santità e al servizio. Sono a suggerire tre semplici modi attraverso i quali le nostre famiglie possono mettere al centro della loro vita di tutti i giorni la Parola di Dio e trarne pace e guida.
Pregare all’ora dei pasti
In linea con una richiesta specifica del Santo Padre, chiedo alle nostre famiglie di ritornare alla bellissima pratica di pregare prima e dopo i pasti (cf. Laudato Si, 227). La tradizionale preghiera a Dio per la benedizione del pasto e la condivisione, può essere un’opportunità per sentire un verso delle Sacre Scritture e rispondere. Per facilitare la cosa, l’Arcidiocesi ha creato una carta di preghiera da usare all’ora dei pasti. Venne distribuita alle parrocchie nella primavera del 2016, ed è disponibile sul sito web dell’Arcidiocesi. Oltre alle preghiere tradizionali, sulla carta troverete un verso della Bibbia, offerto come piccolo gesto per aiutare le famiglie a rimanere centrate ogni giorno sulla Parola di Dio. Le famiglie possono sostituire la citazione biblica della carta con altre che mando via Twitter ogni settimana, e che sono inviate alle parrocchie tramite il bollettino e-mail Quid Novum che viene inserito nel loro bollettino Domenicale.

MISSION TO INDIA
Fr. George is going to India for Mission and to celebrate 1st anniversary of his mother’s death. (Nov. 5th-Dec. 5th, 2017). If anyone would like to help in the CFIC Children’s Mission, please let Fr. George know and he will visit the mission to give them any donations. A small group from our parish will also visit the CFIC Missions in India with Fr. George.
Let us pray for them and wish them a good time. Padre George andra’ in India per 30 giorni per la sua vacanza, per l’anniversario della morte della sua mamma e visitare la missione dei bambini. Se qualcuno vuole fare una donazione per la missione, Padre George puo’ portare con sé vostro dono. Knights of Columbus Santa Maria Goretti Council
Thanksgiving was only a couple of weeks ago. It’s a wonderful time where we pause to give thanks for what we are given. That thankfulness should be a common sentiment in our daily lives. How truly fortunate we are to be living in this beautiful land and be a part of this great family of parishioners. Developing a daily sense of appreciation for what we have sharpens our sense of happiness and gives opportunity to open our hearts to our fellow man. In turn, that action brings greater strength to our community and family. In short, be appreciative, be happy and help your fellow man. Wow...did I just discover the secret to a happy life? The power of prayer needs to be included in the above formula. Prayer places us in contact with Our Lord. He is the source of that power. Next week your Knights facilitate Fifth Sunday

October 29 marks the fifth Sunday of the month. Your Knights are most proud to host our Fifth Sunday Rosary Program. It is designed to help bring parishioners together in spiritual activity and devotion to Mother Mary. Parishioners are encouraged to join us in rosary prayer at 9:30 (just before our 10 AM mass) on the 29th. Faith and fellowship are two important pillars of our attendance at mass. It is amazing how much our spirit and our soul is filled with Our Lord’s Love when we meet in His church! Do we not feel better? Absolutely! Let’s make a standing date...see you at mass. Have you noticed a few Christmas TV commercials have started appearing already. It’s a reminder of how quickly time flies. Seems like September just arrived and we’re already flying through October! One way to “slow” things down is to try and be more mindful of the present. One way to do that is to come to mass, listen to our Lord’s Word, say hello to fellow parishioners and just allow the Holy Spirit to enter your heart. It’s a fantastic reset, and frankly a very healthy activity.
Congratulations to fellow parishioner, Sandra Palazzo, who was elected as an Edmonton Catholic School Trustee. We have a fantastic group of people in our parish and Sandra is but just one wonderful representative of our community. May God guide you in your new duties. And may He guide us all in our daily duties.
