York the official city destination guide 201504 visityork.org

A trip to York conjures up a multitude of emotions for millions of visitors

each year.

For me, visiting York is still as exciting now as it was when I rst came as a

child, and that is the magic of this fascinating old city – its enduring ability

to charm, enthral and captivate generation a er generation.

It is a city which is brimming with attractions, steeped in history and a

shopper’s paradise, with an abundance of stunning shops and

independent boutiques.

Famous for many of the biggest confectioners in the world, such as

Rowntree’s and Terry’s, York is where you can discover the magic of

making chocolate; it is the place where you can step back in time and

discover how the Tudors and Vikings lived; it is home to the greatest

railway museum in the country and the most exciting racecourse. Above

all, it is famous for o ering visitors an experience they will never forget.

Voted the best gastronomic destination in the UK, there is no shortage of

delectable restaurants, trendy bars and traditional pubs hidden among

York’s cobbled streets and ginnels. For those looking to escape the hustle

and bustle, there is an array of beauty spots, country homes, coastal

retreats and beautiful moorland right on the city’s doorstep.

Not since Dick Turpin rode through the streets as the dashing, dandy

highwayman, had the ancient walls seen anything like it, but last year’s

Grand Départ of the Tour de France, which showcased Yorkshire in all its

glory, will long live in the memory.

Such was its success, the county will be gearing up to stand and deliver

again with the arrival of the Tour de Yorkshire which journeys through

York and beyond in 2015.

So whether you’re looking to explore by foot, bike, boat or bus, there really

is something for everybody to do, visit, see, eat and enjoy in old York – the

city that for nearly 2000 years has never slept.

Enjoy your visit.

Mark Bowness is a freelance feature writer and editorial director of beyond, a popular Yorkshire lifestyle magazine.

Having spent 15 years working in London as a features writer for The Sun newspaper and then as a producer on Channel Four’s Big Breakfast, Mark then moved to Italy where he freelanced for a number of national newspapers and magazines before returning to his Yorkshire homeland to launch beyond publishing in 2005. www.beyondmags.com

“I am very proud to be a Yorkshirewoman, having been born, brought up and educated in York. What makes York special to me is its heritage, the Minster and the warm welcome from the people of York.”

“I love the place, the people, and the food. It was and is my home city, there’s such history attached to it and so much to see

and do. Those who haven’t yet been to York should come and visit, and see what all the fuss is about.”

Benjamin Francis LeftwichSinger

“The thing I love about York is that there’s always something going on. I love the fact that I can walk 10 minutes in one direction and be in a forest, and walk ten minutes in the opposite direction and be in a nightclub.

“It’s a small, calm city with a lot of space, and that’s great for a creative music and arts scene.”

There is no shortage of famous faces who hail from York and we asked some of the biggest names to tell us why they love their home city so much and what makes it special.

“There is so much to love about York as a city. The buildings, the people, the attractions. Having travelled from city to city with my job I can honestly say York is

the most beautiful and friendly place I’ve ever been. I’m so proud to call it my home, and come rain or shine it’s a pleasure to be here.”

Guy MowbrayBBC football commentator

“I have lived in York all my life and I can honestly say that no matter where I have travelled in the world there is nowhere to beat it. From the shopping to the people, the racecourse to the museums, the nightlife to the history, the place has it all and I wouldn’t live anywhere else.

A city famed for the KitKat, Viking warriors, spooky ghosts, highwaymen, Guy Fawkes and railways, York has always held a special place in my heart.

As a boy growing up in the 80s, a trip to the city always brought a flurry of excitement. To me, it was Disneyland meets Alice in Wonderland; it was the magic of Willy Wonka’s Chocolate Factory with some real-life Romans thrown in for good measure. It was blood-curdling dungeons, incredible steam trains and wandering down the cobbled streets before eating fish and chips by the river.

But that was over 30 years ago; a time when technology hadn’t robbed children of their wide-eyed innocence and the only surfing we did was on Scarborough beach.

So as the rain poured down I decided to head back there - but could it really still manage to keep three children aged seven, 10 and 14 as entertained today as it had me all those years ago?

All Aboard

I’d already planned the day in my head with three of York’s greatest attractions in mind. The first port of call was to be the National Railway Museum, a place I’d always loved. Within minutes of entering, the kids were blown away by the sheer size and grandeur of this incredible place.

This fantastic free day out allows you to get up close to over 200 years of fascinating locomotive history and to my delight my three were instantly lost in the giant halls full of railway legends, including

the Japanese Bullet Train and the Royal Trains including Queen Victoria’s luxurious saloon. As I soaked up the nostalgic atmosphere of the renovated Station Hall which tells the story of over a century of railway life, the children were in their element climbing aboard the awe-inspiring locomotives and engaging with the interactive exhibitions.

For two hours they were enthralled by the magic of trains. They watched the engineers at work in the workshop, uncovered hidden treasures in the warehouse and let off steam in the outdoor play area.

Families can engage in interactive shows and storytelling each weekend. Throughout the school holidays they can enjoy a range of fun activities, including steam rides and special events, such as Fun with Paddington Bear taking place from 14 – 22 February.

The National Railway Museum DIG York’s Chocolate Story

Where do you go when the heavens have opened, there’s not an Xbox in sight and the kids are climbing the walls? Mark Bowness took his three children to York for the day to see if the city he loved as a child could still keep today’s ever-demanding youngsters entertained.

A Date with Dirt

Next up was DIG – billed as an archaeological adventure where you can recover past treasures.

Located in the redundant medieval church of St Saviour in York, this educational resource is based on four major excavations undertaken by York Archaeological Trust over the past 30 years. It allows visitors to get hands-on in the excavation pits which are filled with Roman, Viking, medieval and Victorian finds. Before long we were lined up in a row, trowels in hand and digging up clues that showed how people once lived. The kids absolutely loved it and we were soon unearthing all sorts of artefacts which put a bigger smile on all their faces than any computer game could ever do.

Such has been the success of DIG that Little Diggers has also just been

introduced. Aimed at children aged 2 - 5 years, it is a programme packed with lots of activities including dressing up, puppets, storybooks and games. The whole family can now dig, delve and discover objects and stories from the past.

Truly Scrumptious Chocolate

After all that spade work, I knew my final attraction for the day would perhaps prove the most popular.

No trip to York would be complete without munching on a bar of chocolate or two. As it is the home to some of the world’s most favourite brands, I knew a visit to York’s Chocolate Story would go down a treat.

We embarked on what proved to be a hugely entertaining and informative guided tour through the history of York’s most famous chocolate-making families and their finest creations. We discovered chocolate’s origins, how to make it, how to taste it like an expert – which involved trying a very strange chocolate drink - and we even discovered just what the future holds for everybody’s favourite guilty pleasure.

The highlight of the trip came with the opportunity to master the secrets of the chocolatier and create our very own chocolate bar to take home. A chocolate-making demonstration from the skilled chocolatiers in the new Chocolate Kitchen

rounded off the experience, but not before we stopped off at the shop to stock up on some treats and enjoy a drink in the fantastic café.

As we left York and the kids laughed at the memories of a fun-filled day, I realised that for family entertainment there really is nowhere quite like this magical city.

If you’re driving, the easiest place to park is in one of the six Park & Ride sites around the city. Parking is free, fares are low and the buses are frequent.

For families visiting York, the Little Vikings website is packed with top tips and information. www.little-vikings.co.uk

There’s no shortage of great restaurants which the whole family will enjoy and these include ASK, wagamama, Yo Sushi, Walmgate Ale House and Bistro (formerly Meltons Too), plus Byron - the place to go for a yummy hamburger.

Theatre at the National Railway MuseumThe award-winning partnership with York Theatre Royal returns from June - September to bring railways alive through theatre. In Fog and Falling Snow looks at the importance of railways to York and its people over the past 200 years, and is followed by an innovative production of The Railway Children.

National Centre of Ceramic ArtOpening in the summer CoCA - the National Centre of Ceramic Art – will be housed on a stunning new mezzanine level inside the re-developed York Art Gallery. CoCA will be an inspiring new addition and showcase the UK’s largest collection of studio ceramics.

Great Yorkshire FringeTop notch comedians and fantastic family entertainment will be hitting York’s city centre in what promises to be a 10-day festival of fun and frivolity. Taking place between 24 July and 2 August , the city’s well-known thoroughfare will be transformed into a vibrant and exciting performance space.

Tour de YorkshireRegion-wide cycle race taking place in May, which will retrace parts of last year’s momentous Tour de France event.

What I love most about York? Every corner you turn you discover something of historical signifi cance. It has a quaint charm that doesn’t always exist elsewhere. Walking round the city is like a voyage of discovery. Oh, and most of the locals are friendly and helpful to visitors!

If you watched last year’s Tour de France, you will have seen Yorkshire’s breathtaking landscape, historic houses, gardens and attractions unfold before your very eyes. At the centre of it all was York - the perfect base to explore the true beauty of God’s Own County.

Whether you want to embrace the elements of the North York Moors National Park, explore the picturesque Yorkshire Dales or take in the breathtaking rugged coastline filled with popular seaside resorts, there is a wealth of places to visit.

Discover the North York Moors and coastal resorts of Scarborough and Whitby. Take in the stunning Yorkshire Wolds and the Howardian Hills, which is a designated Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.

One destination that is right on York’s doorstep, is Ryedale, which offers some of the most spectacular scenery in England. It’s home to charming villages, historic market towns and some of the country’s most beautiful inns, hotels and restaurants where you can unwind after a day of exploring.

If shopping is your thing, the market towns of Helmsley, Kirkbymoorside, Malton and Pickering host bustling weekly street markets and are home to independent

shops and galleries offering a wealth of retail experiences. From traditional antique auctions to agricultural stores, rope makers to quality boutiques, the towns and villages of Ryedale are bursting with treats waiting to be discovered.

Helmsley is a gem in the Ryedale crown. With its picture postcard beauty and regular market, it is an ideal spot for an enjoyable day out. Set against the backdrop of Helmsley Castle is Helmsley Walled Garden, a five-acre, 18th century garden that features vines and vibrant plants within glass houses. There is also the exciting International Centre for Birds of Prey – home to an exciting range of owls, vultures, falcons and hawks, all housed in 40 spacious aviaries – and Nunnington Hall, a 17th century manor house filled with peacocks and a packed programme of events.

Make the most of your York Pass in Ryedale with a trip to the spectacular Castle Howard. Home to the Howard family for over 300 years, this magnificent palace has provided the film set for some of the most exciting film and television productions in the last 50 years, most prominently the dramatisation of Evelyn Waugh’s Brideshead Revisited.

Nestled in-between the moors, wolds and

Howardian Hills, Malton offers eclectic shopping, amazing food and is set in some of North Yorkshire’s most beautiful countryside.

In recent times the town has become a foodie destination, filled with delicious local produce and award-winning monthly food markets, plus an annual food lovers’ festival. The town also has a growing community of artisan producers, two new breweries, and a burgeoning restaurant scene.

Pickering is home to the North Yorkshire Moors Railway, where you can board the 18-mile heritage steam railway running through the spectacular scenery of the North York Moors National Park. The beautifully restored engines call at Goathland station, as featured in the Harry Potter films and ITV’s Heartbeat, before joining the mainline railway at Grosmont for a further six-mile journey to Whitby on the Yorkshire coast.

To truly experience the warmth of Yorkshire hospitality for yourself, let York be your springboard into the amazing countryside that is right on your doorstep.

Spotlight On: York Art Gallery

Whether you are staying in York for a weekend or longer, there is so much for you to do during your visit, from taking in the spectacular sights to trying out the attractions on offer – and one of the most awesome of these attractions is set to reopen its doors this summer after an £8 million redevelopment. If you have

a passion for paintings and an admiration of abstract art, step inside York Art Gallery and see some of the most thrilling new developments in

the history of the city’s art scene.

From pieces by the Old Masters to contemporary works, the Gallery – located in the attractive, bustling Exhibition Square – has been displaying artwork since the late 19th century. The venue has always been a trailblazer for showcasing innovative artists, from the works of one of York’s most famous talents, William Etty, which provided a draw to visitors since the 1900s, to the contemporary artists whose works we can see from this summer.

Having been kept in suspense since the venue first closed for refurbishment in December 2012, art lovers will now get to explore what’s on offer at the new-look building – and there have been some extraordinary, dramatic changes that are certain to excite if you are a past visitor and enthral if you are a newcomer.

Ceramic CentrepieceOne of the most major developments is the introduction of CoCA – the Centre of Ceramic Art. This is a pioneering new national centre dedicated to ceramics, from exhibiting and researching methods, to promoting the work of both established and up-and-coming artists.

If you have a passion for ceramic art, this summer will be the perfect time to visit York and you’ll be bowled over by the star pieces on display by artists including Bernard Leach, Felicity Aylieff, and Pablo Picasso. With over 5,000 examples of British Studio Ceramics, the Gallery has the largest collection in the world. In addition it will become a dedicated hub, nurturing the talents of artists and igniting the interests of visitors through lectures, learning opportunities, and events.

Changing TimesCoCA will be housed in two new spaces within the Gallery - the mezzanine level in the original Victorian Roof Void and a newly built first floor Gallery space. On the ground floor a suite of three galleries will show ambitious, big name and high profile exhibitions. If you wandered through the Gallery before the redevelopment, you will immediately notice it has increased in size. In fact, it is now 60 per cent larger and able to house more exhibitions, more learning areas, and more events.

Another valuable addition is the artists’ garden – a new area that will be directly

linked to York Museum Gardens. This means that there will be new access routes to the Gallery, allowing you to make your way to the venue through the scenic, lush gardens for the first time.

The Wait is OverSo, if you are a culture vulture on the arts trail in York, you are in for an special treat this summer. As you make your way over Lendal Bridge and turn into York Museum Gardens, you can cut through to Exhibition Square where you will come to a statue of William Etty. The statue was placed outside the front of York Art Gallery as a celebration of the artist’s talent that was displayed within it’s rooms. Today, the statue serves as guardian of the inspiring collections and world class creations that are housed in the dedicated new spaces.

Going forward, there is little doubt that the Gallery will take its place among York’s finest must see attractions and will provide a thought provoking experience to visitors of all ages, nationalities and interests.

• Art has always been housed in the York Art Gallery. The building was purpose-built in 1879 for the second Yorkshire Fine Art and Industrial Exhibition.

• William Etty was a controversial figure and his works divided opinion. However, he was ultimately celebrated and honoured with a statue built in his memory in 1911.

• The Gallery’s collection of paintings spans over 600 years and includes work by a diverse range of artists, from 14th century Italian panels to 20th century creations by David Hockney.

• The revamped York Art Gallery will include a second entrance at the rear of the Gallery into the new area of the York Museum Gardens; better visitor facilities including new cafe, shop, toilets and lift; a new learning room on the first floor, improved storage for the collections.

Barley Hall

Located on the doorstep of York Minster, Barley Hall is a stunning medieval townhouse, once home to the Priors of Nostell and the Mayor of York. Until the 1980s the house was hidden under the relatively modern façade of a derelict office block. Only when the building was going to be destroyed was the amazing medieval building discovered and its history revealed. It has now been lovingly restored to its original splendour, with stunning high ceilings, beautiful exposed timber frames, and possibly the only horn window in England. It has been decorated to replicate what it would have looked like as the Snawsell home around 1483 and boasts a magnificent Great Hall. Visitors to Barley Hall can make themselves at home, sit on the chairs, handle the objects and experience what it would have been like to live in medieval England.

A series of events and exhibitions take place throughout the year, offering a unique insight into medieval York life.

Start your visit to York on a high with panoramic views of this historic city, and you will feel on top of the world. There’s plenty to discover at Clifford’s Tower. In its time, it has served as a prison and a royal mint, as well as the place where Henry VIII had the bodies of his enemies put on public display.

Begin your self-guided tour on the ground floor, which at one time housed the royal exchequer and treasury. There is a fascinating tactile model in the courtyard, showing how the site once looked, while the first floor was used as private apartments and includes a richly decorated chapel. On the second floor, the wall walk provides breathtaking panoramic views of the city and a good vantage point to appreciate the layout of the medieval castle.

Novotel York Centre

The only five star hotel in Yorkshire, The Grand Hotel & Spa, York is one of city’s oldest landmarks and a luxury you don’t want to miss. This secluded and tranquil environment is the perfect city centre getaway and an ideal way to escape the rush and stress of everyday life.

Edwardian buildings weren’t constructed using a template, so each of the 107 bedrooms really is unique. There are seven different room types, all exquisitely designed with a feeling of space coming as standard – as does Egyptian cotton bed linen, Molton Brown toiletries, bathrobes, slippers, air conditioning, and free Wi-Fi. Oh, and your very own umbrella for the duration of your stay!

Diners are spoilt for choice with two stylish restaurants, from classic dishes with a refined twist to fine dining. Alternatively, opt for a lighter option with one of The Grand’s renowned Afternoon Teas.

Spa at The Grand, set in the building’s atmospheric vaults, offers an abundance of treatments designed to work away every knot, tension and flaw. Alternatively, relax with a cocktail on the beautiful outdoor terrace. There really is something for everyone in this historic building located near the main transport networks into York.

Open to residents and non-residents, you don’t have to check-in to check out The Grand.

Star Ratings

Accommodation featured in this guide displaying star symbols means it has been quality assessed by VisitBritain or the AA. A property not displaying stars will be awaiting inspection.

A property displaying a ‘Q’ symbol indicates that it has been self-assessed and the owner has agreed to adhere to and sign up to a Code of Conduct. Some larger hotel companies operate their own internal inspection policy. Please be aware that ratings may change throughout the year.

To confirm a rating, contact Visit York Information Centre on 01904 550099.

Accommodation in this guide has been divided

into five categories:

HotelsHotels must have a minimum of six rooms, a licence, offer dinner at least five nights a week (unless designated a Metro Hotel), and have all rooms en-suite or with private bathrooms. They must also operate a high staff-to-guest ratio

thereby making service very attentive.

Guest AccommodationA category on its own, this also covers B&Bs, guest houses, inns, farmhouses and restaurants with rooms. These tend to be

personally run by the owners.

Self CateringFor self-catering accommodation, the layout and design, plus the range and quality of the kitchen equipment is assessed, as well as the quality and comfort of the bedrooms and bathrooms and – crucially – the cleanliness. Higher star-rated accommodation tends to

have more spacious bedrooms and bathrooms.

Budget AccommodationHostels and campus accommodation provide somewhere safe for young people, families and larger groups, and can be star-rated. Higher-rated accommodation often provides

en-suite rooms.

Holiday, Touring & Camping ParksVisitBritain’s star ratings reflect the overall quality of the park from one to five stars – five stars being reserved for parks of exceptional quality. The AA provides a similar inspection scheme for which they award pennants.

Star Ratings Made Easy

Simple, practical, no frills Well presented and well run

Good level of quality and comfort Excellent standard throughout

Exceptional with a degree of luxury

The Inspection Process

Both VisitBritain and the AA assess hotels and guest accommodation to the same criteria with the star rating reflecting the overall quality of the experience. Professional assessors visit properties every year, carrying out a routine day visit or an overnight stay in the case of serviced accommodation. On these occasions, they book in anonymously and test all the facilities and services. A quality score is awarded for every aspect of the experience, including the comfort of the bed, the quality of the food and, most importantly, the cleanliness. They also score the

warmth of welcome.

The ‘Q’ Code of Conduct

Should an accommodation provider decide not to be inspected, Visit York will only promote that provider on the condition they sign a Code of Conduct declaring that they will provide a quality standard throughout. Failure to do this will result in Visit York refusing to place bookings or promote them via the Visit

York website.

Awards – Gold, Silver and Red or Yellow Stars

Places that ‘go the extra mile’ will, in the case of VisitBritain, be awarded a Gold or Silver award and in the case of the AA, be entitled to display red stars for a hotel or yellow for

guest accommodation.

Rosettes

The AA’s rosette scheme is an award,

not a classification. It is designed to assess the quality of food served and is awarded annually on a rising scale of one to five.

This is not to be confused with the VisitBritain rosette, which is used for

quality standards.

Accessibility

Symbols relating to the National Accessibility Scheme (NAS) for wheelchair users and those with limited mobility are displayed where

appropriate on relevant advertisements.

Alternative Accommodation

There are a number of accommodation providers who, although not eligible to display a NAS symbol, are still able to offer suitable and very comfortable accommodation for people with limited mobility. These divide into two

groups and are clearly marked in each entry.

DisabledGo

Establishments displaying the DisabledGo symbol have been visited by a trained access surveyor. Detailed access information for these venues is

available at www.disabledgo.com.

SA (Self Assessed)

Accommodation providers, restaurants and cafés displaying the self assessed SA symbol may have limited access but can accommodate people with mobility problems.

For more information, call the Visitor Information Centre on 01904 550099 or visit www.visityork.org for information

on individual accommodation providers.

Complaints

If you have any issues that have not been resolved by the proprietor/manager and which you would like to bring to the attention of the inspecting authority, please address your correspondence to the relevant organisation:

For VisitBritain ratings: Quality in Tourism Farncombe House, Broadway, Worcestershire WR12 7LJ

Call 0845 300 6996

For AA ratings: The AA 15th Floor Fanum House Basing View Basingstoke RG21 4EA

Call 01256 844455

More detailed information about the requirements of each star rating is available from Quality in Tourism www.qualityintourism.com or the AA www.theaa.com.

Difficulty reading this page? All information in this guide can be enlarged via our website www.visityork.org.

Star Ratings ExplainedVisit York strives to promote accommodation that is trusted to be of an acceptable standard and encourages providers to sign up to one of the two national quality schemes operated by the AA and Quality in Tourism.
