A LOCAL lad is off to the national schoolboy basketball championships in Dandenong after talent scouts picked him from 80 camp hopefuls.

North Perth 12-year-old Luke Simonette may only be 155cm (the third shortest on the 10-boy state team) but his good fundamentals and blistering speed make him a perfect fi t for point guard.

“That’s the small guy on the court that takes the ball up,” Luke says.

“They get the ball and take it up and tell players what to do.”

The year 7 Newman College student (favourite subject: “physical education”, least favourite: “maths”) says it took him by surprise when he won selection after three days of gruelling practice.

“Oh yeah, I was shocked. At the end of the tryouts they said all the names of the people who got in. I went to mum and dad and went ‘I made the team!’”

Dad David says his son has been playing for six years: “It’s incessant! Every day of the school holidays since he’s been six,” he says.

Luke fi rst got into basketball when his dad picked up some tickets for a few Wildcats games. “He hated noise and crowds and had both fi ngers in his ears all game,” Mr Simonette chuckles.

“He couldn’t wait to get out.“Second week he had one fi nger out,

other fi nger fi rmly implanted in his ear.“Third week he’s got both fi ngers

out and he’s starting to clap.“By the fourth week he’s yelling out

‘defence!’ and by the fi fth week he’s yelling at the refs!

“We bought him a ball for Christmas. I think he was about fi ve-and-a-half, and we took him down to the park with a hoop down there. I said to Louise: ‘if he ever gets it in, I’ll ring you.’

“Second shot, he gets it in.“He’s a shy boy off the court, but on

the court? Demon.”Luke fl ies off for the week-long

nationals in Victoria on August 11.

TIM CLIFFORD is the Greens’ candidate for Mt Lawley next year but he doesn’t live up to the sandal-wearing stereotype.

The trained infantryman has served in the Australian Army Reserve and worked for 10 years as a FIFO mining worker.

It’s valuable experience which Mr Clifford says helps him “empathise” with people from all walks of life.

“I started off doing the hard yards in construction, getting up at 4am, and driving two hours to work,” he says.

“Gradually I worked my way up until I was overseeing large-scale environmental lining projects in the mining sector.”

The 30-year old moved back to Mt Lawley in 2010, abandoning the “disorientating” FIFO life-style.

He now works at the WA attorney-general’s department in an auditing/research role and studies politics, economics and journalism at ECU Mount Lawley on his day off .

His campaign will focus on the soaring cost of living, creaking public transport and the rich-poor divide.

“I talk to a lot of young people who can’t aff ord to go to university because the cost of living is so high,” he says.

“Many of them end-up ditching tertiary education and getting a job they don’t want instead.

“Young people should be able to make a choice, without a fi nancial cloud hanging over their head.”

Mt Lawley—a marginal seat held by Liberal MP Michael Sutherland with 52.2 per cent of the two-party preferred vote— is home to a diverse mix of voters, including students, retirees and white-collar workers.

The Greens secured 14.2 per cent of the vote at the 2008 election and Mr Cliff ord is hoping to match or better it.

He says his mining background is not at odds with Greens’ policy, which advocates raising the Gillard government’s Mineral Resource Rent Tax and is opposed to uranium mining and nuclear power.

“I’m against fracking [high-pressure injection of chemicals into the ground to release gas] in the Perth Basin and uranium mining,” Mr Cliff ord says.

“FIFO workers get taxed highly, so why shouldn’t mining companies. I want to see the mining profi ts used to improve public transport in WA—light rail in Alexander Drive in 2014, instead of 2024, would be a good start!”

BAYSWATER Soccer Club has accused the council of “hypocrisy” after it refused to grant a gaming permit for an occasional poker night.

The club wants to hold three poker nights a year to raise funds over the next fi ve years but the council voted the move down.

Council staff expressed concern that once a permit was granted, the club might hold the nights more frequently without requiring additional approval.

Club vice-president Greg D’Orazio says he hadn’t even been aware of the loophole.

Mayor Terry Kenyon says he doesn’t want gambling near juniors who attend the club.

But Mr D’Orazio says the fundraisers would be adults only weekend events.

“No kids in sight,” he said. “We’re talking around 20 men who usually buy around $20 worth of chips each.

“It’s not heavy gambling and it’s not promoting gambling to children.”

He says sports clubs are feeling the pinch and the nights would have injected about $6000 a year into club coff ers.

“Local government wants us to be more self-su cient and then they pull this,” he fumes.

Cr Chris Cornish says the council is applying double-standards, having voted fi ve years ago to approve a TAB at

the Noranda Sporting Club.The mayor—who’d

supported that decision—said it had been, “considered to have merit mainly due to its multi-purpose nature and location in a commercial area adjacent to the [shops]”.

But, “to allow gaming functions over a fi ve year period is considered to be beyond the active recreation purpose of the site and outside the intent of the site for use by the sporting organisation”. “The club does

have the option to apply for an occasional licence for each event,” the mayor said.

The council also rejected a gaming permit application from Morley Windmills Soccer Club, which wanted to stage two bingo nights a week.

“Twice weekly gaming functions are considered to be beyond the active recreation purpose of the site and outside the intent of the site for use by the sporting organisation,” staff said in a report.

SANDGROPERS will be able to wallow in nostalgia at the exhibition Bygone Perth.

It includes 34 photographs of Perth from the 1880s to 1937, gleaned from the WA State Library and Telstra Archive (early telecommunication engineers had been instructed to take pictures during their working day).

It includes everything from the opening of London Court in 1937 to a man riding a horse down Hay Street in the early 20th century.

Highlights include a picture of a fi re engine from the early 1900s when WA was formalising its fi rst o cial fi re service.

“Before the 20th century, Perth’s fi re service was a bit haphazard and amateurish to say the least,” says Heritage Perth director Richard Off en.

“Perth council bought their fi rst fi re engine in 1875, but they didn’t have any horses for it, and had to borrow some from the taxi stand outside the city chambers when there was an emergency.

“It started to become more professional at the start of the

20th century.”The exhibition also

documents the prosperous eff ect the WA gold rush had on Perth in the 1890s.

“The Great Western, Melbourne and Palace Hotels were all built during the gold rush,” Mr Off en said.

“Prospectors would trek back from rural WA to sell their gold in Perth, pumping money back into the city’s economy.”

Mr Off en jokes the change of pace in WA is so slow that some people thought the exhibition photos were taken in the 1980s.

“An old boy walked through the hall as I was putting some photos up and said ‘Did you take those?’” he says.

“I thought—I must be looking my age!”

Bygone Perth is showing at Council House, St George’s Terrace, till August 23.

Don’t fall for tummy ticklesGIVEN the impending move to amalgamate small local authorities into larger administrative centres, I would have thought the Vincent town council would be out and about fi ghting tooth and nails to retain the status quo, rather than lying on its back, waiting for the minister for local government to tickle its tummy.

The Stirling city council is proof enough that the much touted economies of scale are made at the expense of ratepayers living well away from the administrative centre, with a defi nite degradation of basic maintenance services.

When discarded mattresses remain on road verges for a couple of months, you might well wonder whether the city’s rangers patrol the area or are actually blind. But as they say, “out of sight, out of mind”.

From what I can see the small authorities like Vincent and Subiaco have improvement and tree planting

Media cycle peddles obsessionTHE way the 24 hours news cycle has steered and handled the Olympic Games and the rise of sport is saddening, and skews the moral compass, mangles our values.

This obsession with gold is sickening. What has happened with sport for sport’s sake? What has happened with satisfaction by participation, in getting to where you can by the joy of how you get there? What’s with the push by the news media for more gold?

What’s with the news media’s bent on instant gratifi cation? A 24-hour news cycle coveting whether it’s gold or not, and success measured only in gold?

What happened to the public build up for the journey? Of the long haul to where someone is at? The context? What happened to a more sustained coverage of the qualifi ers and the heats? Often they were over days but it seems they’ve disappeared into a day. It’s go for gold from the fi rst day of the Games.

If a person gets to the Olympics it is massive. If ones trials for the Olympics it is massive. If you are part of Little Athletics it is well done. The onus of success and failure should not exist in terms of gold, gold, gold, but rather in all things well done—you know, to the best of our ability and in terms of applauding one another.

Gerry GeorgatosRobin St, Menora

Where’s the fair go gone?I RESPOND to your front page report (“Soaring costs drive homeless surge,” Voice, July 28, 2012) about the increasing reliance on welfare organisations by older people for shelter.

Several reasons for this situation were identifi ed, (WA’s rental crisis, soaring utility costs and pensions being markedly insu cient for meeting home rental costs).

You report a “2012 housing aff ordability study by Anglicare states less than half of one per cent of properties are aff ordable for pensioners” and, “according to the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare, in October-December 2011, 9262 people in WA sought assistance for homelessness, with 98,742 assisted nationally”.

Obvious defi ciencies can be seen around social policy, fi nancial assistance and public services for people with disadvantage by both state and federal governments.

First, in relation to utilities a state government responsibility I believe these need always to remain in public ownership. Once privately owned the costs to consumers increase signifi cantly in order to generate profi ts for share holders.

Regarding pensions, they have not been indexed adequately with aff ected people sometimes having to forgo a meal in order to pay rental and power bills.

Australians matter. The land of the fair go is no longer ringing true and state and federal governments need to comprehensibly analyse and rebalance pensions, allowances and public services to allow a comfortable life for all citizens, not only the diminishing number who can aff ord the increasing costs of living.

Tina SpadacciniWaverley St, Dianella

programs, and even put up more readable street signs. The Vincent tree program has a variety of already large trees, where in my area the Stirling city sees box tree saplings as the best option for suburban street trees.

Ultimately, as the amalgamation move is deemed to improve the lot of ratepayers why not let them have a vote on the issue. We are after all supposed to live in s democracy, or do we?

The recent victory of the people of Bayswater in stopping the construction of a large liquor store, seen as anti-social, is a good example of the contempt the state government has for the people’s will when it allows Coles to take the rejection to court.

It is time to put a stop to the notion that people merely live to be at the service of the business world, which today is out of control thanks to unfi ltered greed. Instead let us go back to the days when society controlled business activities to show our way of life and culture values.

As an oldie, I can’t help wondering why so many people, particularly couples, have to work long hours to meet their living expenses when over the past 70 years productivity has increased in leaps and bounds.

A SMALL aviation park will be built at Maylands Peninsula to commemorate the historic Maylands Aerodrome.

The aerodrome opened in 1924 and was the site of several record-breaking fl ights in the early days of Australian aviation, including the fi rst non-stop fl ight across the continent by Charles Kingsford-Smith in 1928.

The original landing strip was clay soil, topped with cinders, causing Kingsford-Smith to “bog” his plane while landing in wet conditions.

It was relaid with asphalt after World War II to accommodate heavier DC-2 planes that fl ew from Maylands to the eastern states.

The strip was also used by the historic West Australian Airways—the fi rst Australian airline to establish a scheduled air service—which started fl ying mail from Maylands Aerodrome to Derby in the late 1920s.

It had previously operated from air strips at Langley Park and Geraldton.

Terry Gaunt, president of the Maylands Historical and Peninsula Association, has been lobbying Bayswater city council for 12 years to get the park built.

“I’m delighted this has fi nally come to fruition,” the aviation enthusiast told the Voice.

“We are planning to call it Maylands Aerodrome Commemorative Park.

“It is a small, but very important, slice of Australian aviation history.”

The modest 50sqm park will contain vintage artefacts, including original perimeter lights from the airport, an old propellor and plaques to commemorate former pilots and aviation pioneers.

The council has committed $165,000.Works started July 16 and are

estimated to be fi nished by late September.

A fl yover is planned for the o cial opening.

Maylands Aerodrome closed in 1963, after the air space between Maylands and Geraldton airport became too congested with tra c.

DANIEL KING is fed up with the Australian media’s portrayal of

Aboriginal communities.His photographic exhibition

Look Closer pokes fun at the white stereotype of Aborigines—that they all sniff petrol, are lazy and drink a lot.

“The media formulates the national psyche on how indigenous people are viewed,” he says.

“I wanted to debunk some of the negative stereotypes that have been put out there for years.”

Look Closer uses humour to make a serious issue entertaining and engaging: Subjects guzzle petrol from a bowser, a man is drenched in champagne beside the line “likes to drink”.

The subjects in Look Closer are King’s indigenous friends, including City Homicide actor Aaron Pederson and activist Gary Foley.

“I wanted people from all walks of life in there, from celebrities to bus drivers,” King says.

“It was great to have Gary Foley involved, he’s like the Malcolm X of Australia—the founding father of Aboriginal activism.”

Foley, 72, is best known for for his role in establishing the Aboriginal Tent Embassy in Canberra in 1972, and for

ARTSSTEPHEN POLLOCK

establishing the country’s fi rst Aboriginal Legal Service in Redfern in the 1970s.

He also co-wrote and acted in the fi rst indigenous Australian stage production, Basically Black.

As well as being a photographer, King has worked behind the scenes in fi lm for 12 years.

Stark black and whiteHe has done everything from

directing to fetching coff ees, but specialises in lighting, which he’d studied for two years.

This training is refl ected in his stark black and white photography, which juggles shade and chinks of light.

One of the most arresting photos in Look Closer—depicting a man guzzling petrol at a

bowser—was fi lmed on the morning of the exhibition’s opening.

“It was raining all week and it was the only day we could get it done,” he laughs.

“But it turned out really well—very spontaneous.”

King, 33, hopes the exhibition can help change people’s attitudes.

“I want to raise the profi le and plight of Aboriginal people in Australia,” he says.

“My work is about bettering the community and being positive.

“I like to think the use of humour in my exhibition is a good ice-breaker that draws everyone in.”

Look Closer is at the Perth Centre for Photography till September 2.

THE toss of a coin may settle the “where shall we eat” dilemma for

some but for us it came down to the fact Leederville eatery Duendé has a chicken logo on its webpage.

The cute little hen would make a fi ne mate for the Voice’s toe-tapping cock.

Despite the chill wind there wasn’t a table to be had outside but we snagged the last one inside.

After looking at the menu and taking in the ultra-trendy decor of the tapas bar I wondered how my 80-plus mother was going to cope with food about as far from meat and three boiled vege as you can imagine.

She read the menu with ill-concealed horror at fi rst but was won over by a top-notch iced coff ee, a staple whenever eating out.

She surprised me (as she so often does) opting for the rabbit terrine, with pecan bread ($17).

It was sensational, the texture perfect and the taste subtle but alluring. The sweet, nutty bread was a fantastic foil.

My conservative ex-air-force brother had also been struck off -course by the tapas menu but he showed enthusiasm once the

FOODJENNY D’ANGERFFFFFFJE

dish arrived. He’d ordered the meat balls

($16) and the soft, succulent spheres came fl oating in a rich gravy infused with cinnamon that had more than a nod to Moroccan cuisine.

We’d ordered a serve of potato bravas ($10) and the crunchy rounds were slightly smoky, smothered in paprika and came with a spicy home-made tomato dipping sauce. They were so good we ordered more.

I chose the whiting, with saff ron potato and olive salsa ($22). The fi sh was delicious and fell apart at the touch of my fork.

The potato was great too but the bright yellow was a trifl e disconcerting.

Mum and I shared an almond tart for dessert ($14). It was so moist it didn’t need the mandarin ice cream on the side

but we weren’t about to leave it.My sweet-toothed brother

hoed into his doughnut balls with condensed milk ice cream ($14). They were light, fl uff y and not overly sweet and the ice cream smooth and creamy.

Duendé has been around for a while but there’s nothing dated about the decor nor the food, and the extensive wine list has a huge range of organic wines.

For those so inclined there’s a swag of cocktails and a range of spirits including Sipsmith dry London gin and a house chilli vodka.

And the breakfast menu continues through the day to 4pm.

THIS is someone’s masterpiece. Built just last year, a local Italian architect painstakingly

constructed the row of swank townhouses on Joel Terrace, aiming for something that would be his magnum opus.

Having seen plenty of housing projects where developers have done things on the cheap, you can pick the quality in this funky place before you even step inside.

Clocking in at just over a million, the frontage sports groovy contemporary architecture making it really stand out from the street.

Inside, the ground fl oor presents with a huge amount of space in the open plan kitchen/dining area. This vast room opens up onto a big balcony overlooking the Banks Reserve, with plenty of room on the climate-controlled patio for entertaining. The kitchen itself is so top-notch it’s verging on space age, with stainless steel Bosch appliances throughout with a fi ve-burner stove and double oven and a chasm of cupboard space.

Upstairs you have a truly impressive second living area: This big TV room has huge windows facing north and south to let in the morning and afternoon sun,

All three bedrooms—one on each fl oor—feature two-way bathrooms that can function either as an ensuite or a regular bathroom if you open up the

ESTATEDAVID BELL

outer doors. These bathrooms again are very slick, with fl oor-to-ceiling tiles and the upper-most

fl oor’s bathroom featuring a spacious spa with a window overlooking the Swan River.

Having a wander around it didn’t take long to fi gure out why this one had attracted a $1m+ fi gure: There’s just so many high quality touches all around, from rich timber fl oors to the raised ceilings and feature lighting to the towering windows and the two-car garage with a fair-sized powered shed set up inside.

The energy e ciency rating clocks in at a record-setting seven stars (unlike the star rating system with movies, which don’t appear to get better as time progresses. See the devolution between Alien—all-round gripping—and Prometheus —visually marvellous,

but lacking plotwise: What’s up with the characters barely reacting to these incredible discoveries? Who wrote this?! And why dress up Guy Pearce as an old man instead of just getting an old man to play an old man? Aarrgh!).

The eco-friendly design is marked by the insulation, energy-saving light fi ttings and a brick and concrete structure that helps preserve thermal mass and keep the place at a more stable temperature range.

Location-wise, you’re in the northern edge of East Perth on quiet Joel Terrace which puts you outside the bustle of busy Guildford Road, but sets you up for a pretty easy route into the city. About 2km out of town, you’re also 15 minutes walk from the roundly-celebrated Royal Street restaurant strip in East Perth, and even Beaufort Street is only a 20-minute stroll. And being next to Banks Reserve, your river views are guaranteed until the Second Coming: Nobody’s going to put up a huge block of fl ats next to you here.

NOTICEBOARD

ARIES (Mar 21 – Apr 20)Though getting your foundations down feels quite tenuous, your spiritedness

is being supported by the mood of the moment. Dance and roar - and dance some more. Your ability to fi nd beauty and balance is going to happen by full-blooded experiment, not by wondering.

TAURUS (Apr 21 – May 20)Having wielded some authority, now it’s time to get philosophical about the

position you took and what you’ve done. There’s plenty of oxygen for these ruminations. In the right company they will be fun and fruitful. There’s not too much distance between head and heart.

GEMINI (May 21 – June 21)Life is giving you the steering wheel. Are you ready for it? You still

have Jupiter and Venus in your midst, which opens you up for pretty much anything. There is power in your actions. They are likely to have an effect - so it is appropriate to apply plenty of awareness.

CANCER (June 22 – July 22)After having dipped into the shadows for a while, you are taking tentative

steps towards joining your friends. Sidle up to your tribe, in whatever way feels comfortable and effective. If you are milling around with the appropriate folks, your essence will be nourished.

LEO (July 23 – Aug 22)Mercury has just entered Leo, to be with the Sun. Mercury gives

the capacity to be both brilliant of insight, or tangle oneself in a fur-ball of woolly arguments. The trick with Mercury, and he is tricky, is to keep your perception pure and fresh. See what is here now.

VIRGO (Aug 23 – Sept 22)With your planet Mercury, having entered Leo, there’s suddenly a fi re in your derriere

that gets you moving. There’s a certain urgency to your actions. There will be no prevaricating about priorities, they are suddenly obvious. Put on what you have been putting off.

LIBRA (Sept 23 – Oct 23)Saturn fi nds a friend in Venus. Discipline, in the true sense of the

word, turns to love. You can feel the benefi ts and they make you happy. This comes about from putting what you want into place. If you haven’t yet, you soon will. Marry action with delight. Do it now.

SCORPIO (Oct 24 – Nov 21) There’s no escaping commu-nication. It doesn’t matter how

many times you want to go sideways, reverse, or run to the hills, what’s to be said needs to be said and what’s to be heard needs to be heard. The irony is always that both fears and hopes are wrong. Be real.

SAGITTARIUS (Nov 22 – Dec 21)Now is not the moment to get fl aky. A roar is much more relevant and right than a

whimper or a whisper. That which is disguising itself as sensitivity, may well be avoidance. Astrologically it would be better for you to be more lion than fi sh. Be hearty, proud and loud.

CAPRICORN (Dec 22 – Jan 19)It’s a wise goat who digs deep to fi nd out what his or her intuition, soul, or

deepest current of being, is suggesting. You may have to enter a place or state of relative silence to hear the stirrings of your own spirit. Clear the clutter of other’s ideas. Grab hold of your own.

AQUARIUS (Jan 20 – Feb 18)As relationship issues slowly starts to come off the boil, so you can spend more

time and energy on your craft. Some would call it labour but that implies drudgery. Since so much of our life goes into work, to turn it into craft and extract measureless joy, is a good move.

PISCES (Feb 19 – Mar 20)The Moon charges you up. As she lights your heart, so she makes you

aware of all those things and people in your life that are not in tune with your soul. Awareness is a double-edged sword. Be discerning as well as sensitive. These are transformative times. Use them well.

CHRISTOPHER van Tuinen continues his connection with Fremantle when he conducts

the University of WA Choral Society’s performance of Antonio Vivaldi’s popular and familiar Gloria on Sunday August 19 at St Patrick’s Basilica.

Perissinotto will accompany the choir, which will be joined by members of the Perth Undergraduate Choral Society.

“I am delighted to be directing this program of beautiful music in such a marvellous setting,” van Tuinen said.
