• Tell your child they will be playing a rhyming game. Hop or clap if the words rhyme.

Phonological Awareness

Counting Syllables

• I can clap to count the syllables, or beats, in a word.

• Listen: snowflake. Clap twice while you slowly repeat snowflake.

• I clapped twice because there are two syllables in snowflake.

• Repeat with the following words.

Phonics/ Phoneme

Creating Words

• Let's use these letters to make words with short vowels.

• First, I choose a vowel: a, /a/. Then I choose a letter for the beginning of the word: c, /k/. And then I will choose a letter for the end of the word: p, /p/. When I put them all together, what is the word? That's right, the word is cap.

• Now it is your turn to read the following words.

Spelling Writing Words

• Dictate the words from the previous activity to your child.

• Encourage him/her to say each sound in the word and write it on a sheet of paper or journal.

• Your child can also draw a picture next to each word.

HFW High Frequency Words

• Use or make HFW cards.

• Read the following words.

Vocabulary Words About Feelings Adjectives are words that describe people, places or things. Words about feelings describe how a person feels.

• Think of words that describe your feelings about school or staying at home.

• Write the word or words and create illustrations that show your feeling/s.
