Mitzvah 613: Writing a Sefer Torah
“And now, write for yourselves this song, and teach it to the Children of Israel. Place it into their mouths, in order that this song will be for Me as a witness for the children of Israel.” (Deuteronomy 31:19). While this is referring to the song of Haazinu near the end of the Torah, The Talmud (Nedarim 38a) has taken this to refer to the commandment for every Jew to write his/her own Sefer Torah (Torah scroll).
It is a special skill to write a Torah, and it takes on average a year to do so. As many of us have other vocations, how then can we fulfill this command? According to Rabbi Moses Isserles (the Rema), we fulfill it by writing at least one letter in the Torah (Yoreh Deah 270:1 based off Menachot 30a).
During the 2018-19 synagogue year, each of us will have the opportunity to fulfill this Mitzvah, thanks to the generosity of Neil and Sherry Cohen. Neil’s parents, Norman and Harriet z”l were members of the Jericho Jewish Center for almost 60 years. When Norman z”l passed away last year, Neil and Sherry sought to honor him through a gift to his spiritual home, the Jericho Jewish Center. Their generosity enables us to acquire a new Torah at JJC, a welcome addition, as most of our Torot are heavy and a number of them are pasul (unfit for ritual use). Each of us will have the opportunity to fulfill this commandment by donating for a letter, a word or a more substantial gift to be given in memory of a loved one or in honor of a simcha. All donors will receive a certificate of appreciation for their donation, will get to write a letter in the Torah and will have a photo taken with the scribe as this is done.
Please send your gift in to the Jericho Jewish Center and indicate that it is for the Mitzvah 613 Torah campaign. Also please inform your family and friends, inviting them to contribute to our new Torah. Let us know if you are interested in participating in our Mitzvah 613 committee: we are looking for creative minds to plan educational programs around the Torah. Lastly, please indicate if it is in honor of a simcha or in memory of a
loved one so that we can acknowledge it appropriately. You can donate online: www.jerichojc.com/mitzvah613/

Jericho Jewish Center’s
MITZVAH 613 Sefer Torah Program
On Tuesday October 2nd
we will
celebrate completing the Torah. We will read
from the both final Torah portion, V’Zot
HaB’racha, and from the first Torah portion,
Bereshit. Everyone who wants to will be able to
receive an Aliyah to the Torah with two special
honorees receiving the final Aliyah from
Deuteronomy (Hatan Torah) and the first Aliyah
from Genesis (Hatan Bereshit). We will form
circles (Hakafot) with the Torah in the center
and dance with the Torah.
Why do we do this? For a long time in
Jewish history, there was no Simchat Torah, at
least by that name. The only holiday
commemorating the Torah was Shavuot.
Simchat Torah is not mentioned in the Torah or
Talmud. The Talmud does refer to reading
VeZot HaBeracha (the end of the Torah) on the
second day of Shmini Atzeret, but it does not
give this day a specific name.
How then did Simchat Torah come
about? It begins with knowing that there were 2
different cycles for the reading of the Torah: a
Babylonian cycle completing the Torah reading
every year and a Palestinian cycle completed it
once every 3.5 years (the original Triennial
cycle). During the Geonic period (9th-12
th
centuries), the Palestinian cycle was rejected in
favor of the Babylonian one. This led to the idea
for a celebration of the yearly completion of the
Torah. It was not until the 13th or 14
th century
with Jacob Ben Asher (the Tur) that Genesis
was begun on the same day that Deuteronomy
was ended. The Tur said this was to confuse
the satan (the adversary) who might claim that
the Jews were happy to finish the Torah but
were reluctant to begin anew. We also begin the
Torah immediately following its completion to
fulfill the rabbinic maxim “just was we were
privileged to witness its ending so shall we be
privileged to witness its beginning.”
The truth is that one knows when
Simchat Torah originated. Lesli Koppelman-
Ross writes that the impetus for Simchat Torah
arose because of an increased emphasis in
Torah due to expulsions, blood libels and
Crusades. This was followed by a custom to
remove all the Torot from the ark and to do
circles (hakafot) around the bimah. The hakafot
(circlings) come from 16th century Tsfat, the
period of the kabbalists (same time kabbalat
Shabbat began). There is also a tradition of
making donations to the congregation especially
on Simchat Torah, for aliyot and other honors.
Simchat Torah is one of the few holidays
on the Jewish calendar that does not have a
basis in the Bible, so why do we celebrate it, let
alone make it the status of a Yom Tov (sacred
day)? We show that while tradition is important,
there is a basis for new rituals. There was no
ritual to commemorate the end of the Torah
reading, and people therefore wanted to create
one. This can serve as a basis for creating new
rituals today. In addition, Shavuot and Simchat
Torah serve as bookends for the year. They are
six months apart, ensuring that we are always
looking forward to a holiday honoring the Torah.
I’d like everyone to consider what the
cycle of renewing the Torah means to you. In
particular, I am interested in how you find
meaning in rereading the same Torah readings
every year. I enjoy rereading the Torah because
I find things that I miss as well as new meanings
in the text, but I am interested in hearing from
you as to whether you find the rereading of the
Torah to be meaningful and why/why not.

Simchat Torah’s History
Amy Kahane,
Educat ion Director
The hallways and classrooms were filled with hugs, laughter and excitement on opening day
of the Jewish Youth Learning Center. The first day of school we were privileged to have our
Shinshinit, Noa lead us in a fun, experiential learning on Rosh Hashana. We all wrote on cards our
goals for the new year and then tied them to balloons.
During Rosh Hashana many students went up on the Bimah to blow Shofar with the Rabbi.
Two of our upcoming B’nai mitzvah students, Ryan Smiler and Maya Akiva got to hold the Torah
after it was read and dressed. Kol Havakod!
Our Sukkah P.A.C.T. workshop was a fun learning experience. Families made Sukkah
decorations (Jewish stars from tree branches); learned about the Lulav and etrog, and the mitzvah
and proper way to give it a shake; as well as a lesson on Ushpizin; welcoming our guests. We
finished the learning with some Sangria in the Sukkah and a nosh.
A special thank you to Dr. Gendel for leading our family services in the Beit Midrash. He is
always so inspirational and his teachings and knowledge are so valuable to each of us. Thank you
also to Steve Gordonson and Eric Starr for leading our younger grade services. Their service was
enjoyed by all the families.
We welcome Laura Sameyah as the new school administrator. Please stop by and say hello.
We wish Amy Beth all the best in her new endeavor, we will miss her.

With much joy and pride we congratulate Ryan on becoming a Bar Mitzvah. Ryan is a third generation member of Jericho Jewish Center and an active member of the synagogue. He attends South Woods Middle School in Syosset where he plays the french horn and is on the middle school soccer team. Ryan enjoys drawing, being a big brother to Drew and attending Camp Chipinaw each summer. We’re so excited for this momentous occasion and look forward to celebrating more of Ryan's simchas in the years to come. Mazel tov to Ryan on becoming a Bar Mitzvah on October 13!!
With Love and adoration, we are excited to share the Bat Mitzvah of our daughter, Maya Eden Akiva, on October 20th. Maya has been a joy to us since the second she was born. She is caring, sweet, outgoing and kind. She is an amazing daughter and the best sister, friend and mentor to Liv. Maya has enhanced her Jewish leaning by attending the Jericho Jewish Center for the past 4 years. Under the fabulous leadership of Amy Kahane, Maya learned the tenants of Judaism. For the past year, Maya has been fortunate to study with Lisa Maron, first at boot camp and then for her Torah studies. Lisa has encouraged and inspired Maya to not only learn her portion, but to learn Torah and to understand and respect it. We
are grateful to all of our family, friends, Rabbi Herman, Richard Cepler and the rest of JJC's leadership team for helping us to reach this milestone.

Preschool Highlights: We Inspire A Love Of Learning And Discovery!
When I see the children enter the doors of the school at the beginning of each year I am always surprised by
how young they are! It amazes me how fast they develop and grow over the course of the school year.
The children grow and learn so much by the time our school ends in June.
Johann Wolfgang von Goethe made the observation that when one witnesses the astounding pace of the
development of the infant and the young child, one would be sure to deduce that “if children grew up
according to early indications, we should have nothing but geniuses” as adults.
So it is that we, early childhood teachers, and most assuredly you the parents, have the greatest potential to
lay the foundation, or building blocks for the future of our children. It is our desire to provide the very best for
all of the students here at Jericho STEM Academy! We strive to provide an environment rich in possibilities
to explore, deduce and discover, not only for future success in school, but for success in life. We also strive
to provide an environment which encourages respect and courtesy for ourselves and for others.
Our World of Toddlers
Our toddlers focus on fostering positive attitudes and relationships through group activities. Some of these
activities include painting, exploring different sensory materials, or playing group games such as “Ring
around the Rosie.” Promoting group activities teaches the children to make friends, work together and form
positive relationships.
Our Fabulous Threes
As we are all aware our children are growing on a daily basis, because of this we want to create
opportunities to help each child build self-esteem and healthy habits when facing new challenges.
Our threes will spend the month identifying their feelings and learning new strategies to help convey their
emotions. They will do several activities to learn about fire prevention. We will use vinegar, baking soda, and
food coloring to create fire. The children will learn about chemical reactions.
Pre-K
Our Fours are learning their letters and are in the process of making an alphabet book. They also have an
index card box where they learn site words each week. The highlight of the month will be our trips to White
Post Farms and to the firehouse!
We are a very diverse school but all of the children look forward to celebrating Shabbat and enjoy learning
about the Jewish Holidays. Our children embrace what is taught and are excited to learn about their friends
traditions!
Warm Regards,
Ilene Morrin, Director

SIMCHA TREE
The Simcha Tree leaves can be purchased
to commemorate a Simcha such as the birth of a grandchild, a Bar / Bat Mitzvah, or to honor a special birthday.
A leaf can be purchased for any happy
occasion. Your message will be engraved on the leaf. Choose a spot and the leaf is
installed. This is a lovely way to support the Jericho
Jewish center and honor your dear one. The cost of a leaf is $250.00. The “CHAI” stones
are $1,800. I look forward to hearing from you.

Sponsor ing a Kiddush
Please e-mail or phone if you are interested in sponsoring a Kiddush honoring or memorializing a loved one or for a celebratory event. Kay Caterers offers a more elaborate kiddush as well. The prices are based on a 75 person Congregation Kiddush; there is an extra charge for additional guests. In addition, if anyone is interested in hosting a Minyan Breakfast that, too, is available. I would be happy to discuss each of the options in detail with you regarding content and cost.
Please contact me if you are interested in sponsoring a Kiddush, breakfast or luncheon in honor or in memory of someone. We have many options that we can work with you. Judy Solomon (516) 938-7538, [email protected]
