Archbishop’s Annual Appeal

Prayer and Precautionary Measures

Archbishop Lucas asks that Catholics throughout the Archdiocese of Omaha pray for the intercession of St. Joseph on March 19th, during this time of uncertainty due to the spread of the coronavirus. The 19th is the Solemnity of St. Joseph, Husband of Mary. St. Joseph is the patron saint of the Universal Church. The below prayer will be said at the daily mass on March 19th at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel, and please consider it as part of your prayer.

In discussion with the parish council for Our Lady of Mount Carmel, St. Pat’s Bash will be postponed to a date to be determined, especially given the Archdiocese’s recommendation and request that all fish fries throughout the Archdiocese be cancelled until further notice.

In addition, as precautionary measures the following will be implemented at the weekend masses at St. Francis and Our Lady of Mt. Carmel:

~~suspending the exchange of the sign of peace; and

~~suspending the distribution of the precious Blood. (We receive the body, blood, soul, and divinity of Jesus Christ undivided under the species of bread alone.)

If you have any input, comment or questions, please do not hesitate to let me know or one of our parish trustees or council members.

Prayers for the World during the Outbreak of the Coronavirus

To you, O blessed Joseph, do we come in our tribulation. Through that charity which bound you to the immaculate Virgin Mother of God and through the paternal love with which you embraced the Child Jesus, we humbly beg you graciously to regard the inher-itance which Jesus Christ has purchased by his Blood, and with your power and strength to aid us in our necessities.

O most loving father, ward off from us every contagion of error and corrupting influence; O our most mighty protector, be propitious to us and from heaven assist us in our struggle with the power of darkness; and, as once you rescued the Child Jesus from deadly peril, so now protect God's children from the snares of the enemy and from all adversity; shield, too, each one of us by your constant protection. Amen. (Excerpted from the Enchiridion of Indulgences, 1969)

Our Lady of Mt. Carmel pray for us! St. Francis of Assisi pray for us!

My thanks for the support given to the Archbishop’s Annual Appeal. As noted above, St.

Francis and Our Lady of Mount Carmel met both the financial goal and participation goal. Thank you and congratulations! A testament to each parish!

Fifth Sunday of Lent

The Gospel conveys to us the familiar story of Lazarus, the brother of Martha and Mary, raised from the dead, as Jesus calls him out of the tomb. Jesus has power over death, a central and fundamen-tal part of our faith. Jesus leads us to eternal life. As Jesus states, “I am the resurrection and the life; whoever believes in me, even if he dies, will live, and everyone who lives and believes in me will nev-er die.” Powerful words.

Do we believe in Jesus? Many people would say yes! If we believe in Jesus, do we truly act in

a way that reflects this belief? Doesn’t make much sense to believe in Jesus and not do anything to reflect it in our lives. You may have heard - faith without works is dead, or consider that belief with-out following is dead. So if I believe Jesus is the source of eternal life, do I know Jesus? Do I desire to come closer to Jesus? Do I know what Jesus is asking me to do? Do I take up my cross and follow him? Questions to ponder as we approach this most sacred time of our Church.

Palm Sunday and Holy Week

My plan is to livestream Palm Sunday (4/5), Holy Thursday (4/9), Good Friday (4/10), the Easter Vigil (4/11) and Easter Sunday (4/12), as at this point is still looks like with the gathering limi-tation, public masses will continue to be suspended in the Archdiocese. My encouragement during this holy time includes the following:

Palm Sunday: You may consider reading the Passion as a family or individually on this day. I

intend to bless palms and have available for individuals and families on Palm Sunday. The blessed palms will be at the entrance to the church. Please feel free to come by, pick-up and take home.

The Sacred Triduum: During this time, families may consider intentional prayer together, read-

ing scripture, cooking and eating together, and relaxing together. This is a time of solemnity and can be a special time for building up families in preparing for Easter.

Holy Thursday: My encouragement would be to read the Gospel of the Mass, the shar-ing of a meal, and the carrying out the mandatum (washing of feet) in families. Parents may consider washing the feet of their children, or siblings of each other. Good Friday: My encouragement would be reading of the Passion, also the praying of the Stations of the Cross, or Chaplet of Divine Mercy, or the recitation of the Sorrowful Mysteries of the Rosary. The above are options to consider to mark this solemn day. The Easter Vigil: My encouragement would be to light candles and to read the Exsultet, and then to read through all (or some) of the readings of the Vigil. Also to renew baptis-mal promises and recite the litany of the saints. (I intend to provide the Exsultet, baptis-mal promises and litany of the saints in next week’s bulletin) Easter Sunday: Families could read the Mass readings in the morning and give thanks for our Lord’s power over death and that we share in the Resurrection.

All the above would be at the discretion of each person and family, on what may be of help during this important and sacred time. The U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishop’s website, www.usccb.org would be a good resource for Mass readings to use during this time.

Our Lady of Mt. Carmel pray for us! St. Francis of Assisi pray for us!

Let’s continue to pray for one another this Lent and let’s be encouraged in our faith by the Word of God, “that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor things present, nor things to come, nor powers, nor height, nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord.” (Romans 8:38-39)

Greetings from Fr. Pat
