Hispanic/Latino youth between the ages of 12-18 who journeyed to the U.S. unaccompanied and are experiencing symptoms of

acculturation stress. A caregiver would also have to commit to attending sessions with the

youth.

Two social workers, Chenoa Moten and Cat Patteson, were selected as 2015-2016 Albert

Schweitzer Fellows. They have partnered with Catholic

Charities Archdiocese of New Orleans to address a reported

health need in the Greater New Orleans community after careful analysis of data and interviews

with community leaders.

An 8-week program for Hispanic/Latino youth and

their caregivers

Alivio Intervention

This program will serve two groups during the Spring of 2016. Each group will have up to ten Hispanic/Latino youth participants between the ages of 12-18 years old and one of their caregivers. Groups will be held for over eight weeks, with each meeting lasting about an hour and a half. Meals will be provided at each session.

Acculturation Stress Acculturation stress occurs when a person attempts to cope with the difficulties of living in a new culture. It can often have psychological, social, physical and financial consequences.

Alivio is a program created to support adolescents experiencing acculturation stress by providing education to improve recognition of emotional and physical responses, increase coping abilities, encourage engagement in their new community as well as assist participants in establishing a support network within their community and empowering them to change their environment to fit their needs.

Youth and caregivers will have a one-on-one intake session with a social worker and an exit interview. Each session will be led in Spanish by at least two group leaders. At the last session of each cohort participants will attend a graduation ceremony Members who attended at least 6 of the 8 sessions will receive a graduation gift for completing the program.
