Who is Maccabi World Union?

• A Jewish sports organisation based in Israel

• With over 400,000 members around the world in over 60 countries.

• It is the largest Jewish member based organisation in the world.

What is MSLP? • A 6 month gap year program

• Combines a love for sport and Israel in a fun, social, and dynamic program

• Focus on leadership development for the Jewish and wider community

Who is MSLP for?

• People with an interest in sport!

• School leavers and persons aged 17-20 looking for a Gap year program

• Involvement in a Maccabi club is preferred but not mandatory

Where will it take place? • Beginning late January 2014

• Rather than being based in one location – accommodation will be provided in Youth Hostels closest to where the program is being run at the time.

Components

The program offers 5 main elements:

1. Leadership

2. Sports Management

3. Israel Experience

4. Community Service

5. Poland

Leadership

• 2 Weeks in Jerusalem

• Jewish Learning, Ulpan and Seminars, MASA Leadership Seminar

• Insight into being a Leader in the Jewish Community

Sports Management

• 5 and a half weeks at the

Wingate Institute

• Lessons in Coaching, Sports Management, Human Physiology

• Staying in Beit Leni in Tel Aviv

Israel Experience

• Visit key Historical Sites & Exploring the different landscapes

• Immersing in Israeli culture

• Gaining an appreciation for the culture of the country

Community Service

• Living in a remote community working as volunteers

• Working with the team at SPIVAK

• Assisting in JNF Projects

Poland

• 8 Days in Poland & Czech Republic (Prague)

• MOTL outline

• Preparation seminar & Debrief Post trip Seminar

Expectations Upon Return

• Each participant is asked to be involved with Maccabi for 12 months upon their return.

• This can be at a club, state or national level.

• Carnival, International Events, State Clubs.

Process of Applications

• MSLP Application forms

Costs

• The program content is still being finalised however, the ground cost will be in the range of approx. $13,500

• This cost includes a trip to Poland, all accommodation, meals and transport

• Flights and insurance will be additional

MASA Grants

• Criteria:

– Jewish

– Not have Israeli Citizenship

– Haven’t been on organised program in Israel for longer than 4 months

MASA Grants

• Fill out online form

• You will receive by email a copy of your form. This must be printed, signed and returned

• All eligible applicants get a $1,000 grant guaranteed

• Means tested applications can receive up to $5,000 in total (for 5 month programs)

Other Sources of Funding at Maccabi

• There are tax deductible opportunities for part of the cost of this trip through the Australian Sports Foundation

• We will also produce an advertising brochure for the group to enable further tax deductible opportunities

Flights

• Goldman Travel

• Group flight departs Mon 27 January 2014

• Cost of flight & insurance will be

approx. $2,900

Phone & Communications

• Maccabi Australia negotiates a group plan on your behalf

• Cheap to call designated ‘Home’ number in Australia, amongst other benefits

Security

• Maccabi World Union acts upon the advice of the Jewish Agency security department

• Jewish Agency is in constant contact with Israeli security sources

• SMS response system
