Weekly Message
Word of Life
“Life is a gift from God and so is his mercy. May we cherish and promote both!”
-Bridges of Mercy for Post-Abortion Healing USCCB Secretariat of Pro-Life Activities, 2016-2017 Respect Life Program P. 2
Today’s gospel from St. John gives us a
unique and fascinating story of Jesus and
the Samaritan woman at the well. This
woman’s history reminds us of our own
frailties; her finding of faith and a new life
encourages us. Hunger and thirst are such
elemental experiences that they come
immediately to mind, as we try to express
the restless quest that shapes every human
life. Fasting during Lent puts us in touch
with people who are hungry and thirsty for basic food and drink
in our world. However, the thirst that is expressed in this gospel
is beyond physical thirst. It appears that life's searching has led
the Samaritan woman to making serious mistakes, we could
relate to her from whom Jesus asks a drink. Jesus is thirsty; but
what he seeks before all else is that this woman and those like
her find true peace. In their memorable exchange he responds to
the woman's searching. As she comes to recognize that she has
found what her heart has been seeking, she 'puts down her water
jar', and runs off to share the good news with the villagers she
has been avoiding by coming to the well at midday when there
are few people around.
This narrative has been written for a community that has
meditated deeply upon basic themes of Christian faith – themes
as relevant for us today as they were when the gospel was
written. The Savior is progressively presented as the one in
whom humanity's long and troubled search will find what it has
been looking for. He is 'greater than Jacob', the ancestor of
Israel; he is not only 'a prophet', He is 'the Christ' of Israel's
hopes. In fact – as in many texts of John's gospel – He intimates
a claim to the divine name itself, 'I AM HE'. His coming
inaugurates a new order, 'worship of the Father in Spirit and
truth' – something far beyond what has been known to Jews and
Samaritans. Jesus brings 'living waters, welling up to eternal
life'. This is a reminder of the waters of baptism which wells up
to eternal life within us.
Today at 11 am Mass and for the next two Sunday’s, we will be
celebrating the Scrutinies for the Catechumens who will be
receiving the sacraments of initiation at Easter. The Scrutinies
are intended to purify the catechumens’ minds, and hearts, to
strengthen them against temptation, to purify their intentions,
and to make firm their decision, so that they may remain more
closely united with Christ and make progress in their efforts to
love God more deeply. The Scrutinies teaches the catechumens
gradually about the mystery of sin, from which the whole world
and each person desires to be redeemed, and thus be saved from
its present and future effects. It also helps to fill the minds of the
catechumens with the meaning of Christ the Redeemer. The
Samaritan woman’s understanding of Jesus was a gradual
process. She had her questions and doubts, but finally realized
Jesus as the Messiah. Our catechumens too have been searching,
asking questions, and gradually getting the knowledge and
understanding that Jesus is the messiah and salvation comes
from Him.
We welcome Fr. Bob Weiss to our par ish this weekend as he
conducts our Lenten mission from Monday to Wednesday from
6:45 pm to 8 pm each night. I have asked that no other parish
activity be held during these evenings so that every parishioner
will be able to participate in the mission. As I mentioned last
week, Fr. Bob will be focusing on the greatness of God, the
biblical teaching on sin and God’s forgiveness, and the exciting
experience of the presence of Jesus in our midst. Every evening
of this mission, we will have praise and worship songs at
6:45 pm by the Second Power Band before the mission talk at
7 pm. After each mission, Fr. Bob will be available for
confessions. He will also be preaching at our daily Masses from
Monday to Thursday during the mission. Come join us in
praising God and hear him challenge us again to step forward in
faith. Our parish and St. Martha will be holding the Lenten
penance service with individual confessions here at St. Mary
Magdalene on Thursday, March 23rd from 6:30 pm. Many
priests have been invited to help us with confessions so make
use of this opportunity to prepare for the Easter festivals.
Feasibility Study & Capital Campaign: As St. Mary
Magdalene continues to grow as a Catholic community here in
Humble, it is important that we continue to evaluate the needs
of our parish. You will recall that we conducted a survey two
years ago with the help of HBL Architect which helped
determine the needs of our community. With that in mind, we
are moving forward with a Feasibility Study to examine the
possibility of conducting a capital campaign to add to the
church and build a new multi-purpose building. Such an effort
requires thoughtful planning to ensure success. The Finance
Council has recommended that we hire Guidance in Giving, a
professional Catholic development organization, to assist us
with the Feasibility Study through personal interviews and
surveys. We have already begun our relationship with them.
You will soon get a letter in the mail inviting you to participate
in the interview or the survey. I ask that you help us with your
valued opinions which will assist us to continue with the vision
that this church was founded on. Together, we can make
well-informed decisions about the future of
St. Mary Magdalene. Please note that a capital campaign would
not begin until after the results of the Feasibility Study have
been presented to the parish and we are confident in our ability
to move forward. Thank you in advance for your counsel as we
plan for our future here at St. Mary Magdalene. Please keep our
endeavors in your prayers and thank you so much for your
support. Have a blessed week and Lenten season!

Breaking Open the Word for Families
3rd Sunday of Lent
Reading 1: Exodus 17:3-7
Is the Lord in our midst or not? Although God led the
Israelites out of slavery in Egypt, parted the Red Sea for
them, and fed them with manna in the desert, the people
forgot the Lord’s goodness in their hardships. Let us strive
to always remember that the Lord is in our midst, standing
right in front of us, waiting to slake our thirst with water
from the Rock – Jesus Christ.
Reading 2: Romans 5:1-2, 5-8
God proves His love for us in that Christ died for us.
St. Paul explains that “hope does not disappoint” – hope in
God, that is. God has poured out His love for us in His
Holy Spirit. St. Paul makes the point that God freely gives
His gifts to us sinners, who are undeserving of such
wonderful grace.
Gospel: John 4:5-42
He would have given you Living Water. Jesus meets a
Samaritan woman at a well, tells her everything about her
life, and offers her “Living Water” which will “well up to
eternal life.” He extends this Living Water to us as
well – all we have to do is ask and be ready to receive.
CCE does not meet this week. CCE will recess for the Parish Mission (Sunday, March 19 –
Wednesday, March 22). See you back the week
of March 26!
The third Eucharist lesson in Sac Prep is
coming up next Monday, March 27! Our catechists will
interview the children on lessons 7 through 14. If you have
not completed those chapters, now is a good chance to do so.
Reception of the Eucharist under both species will be
practiced. Children needing Reconciliation interviews
should contact Mike, Ginger, or Carissa at 281-446-8211.
Our faith in art: Please see The Apparition of The Virgin
in Lourdes attributed to Franz Xavier Winterhalter
(1805 – 1873). Empress Eugenie is said to have
commissioned this painting in gratitude for the miraculous
cure of her son, the prince imperial, after he drank water
from the spring and ate a blade of grass from the grotto.
Winterhalter has painted St. Bernadette Soubirous, a young
child, on her knees in the grotto in prayer and paying rapt
attention to the beautiful Virgin Mary, who here appears also
as a young child. The youthful appearance of the Virgin
corresponds very closely with Bernadette’s account, that
“aquero” – “that one”, as Bernadette referred to the Virgin –
was a “sweet little thing” – a young girl of her own age.
Mary’s arms are opened wide in a welcoming gesture, and
her veil is worn such that her hair is visible. Both of these
details are faithful to Bernadette’s account and differ from
most artists’ rendering of Our Lady. The twelve stars which
crown Mary mark her as “the Virgin of the Apocalypse”.
Interested in becoming Catholic?
Our next inquiry class begins April 18.
Please join us then or contact Ginger with
any questions you may have.

He pedido que
bendecida!
—Padre Felix (pastor@st-mm.com)
