Academically,Willamettehas theCollegeof Liberal Arts, the College of Law, theGeorge H. Atkinson Graduate School of Management,andtheSchoolof Education.Cooperativeprogramsenableallstudentstobenefit from the quality curriculum. Willamette’s endowment is consistentlyamong the largest in the Northwest andcomparesfavorablyonanationalbasis.Thecampusfeatures42buildingson61acres. During thepastdecade,more than$50million has been invested in the campus.Recent projects include the $5.5 millionHallieFordMuseumof Art,the$8millionMary Stuart Rogers Music Center, and the$2.7millionMontagStudentCenterandthe$14millionKanekoCommons. Construction will begin soon on FordHall,whichwillhouseRhetoricandMediaStudies, Computer Science, Math, DigitalArt, Film Studies and Music Technology.Funds for the 46,000-square-foot buildingincludean$8milliongiftfromHallieFord. The Mill Stream runs through the WUcampus andprovides abeautiful setting towalk to classes,playgameson the campusquad or hang out with friends. Willametteisfortunatetohaveagreatcombinationofwonderful landscaping, beautiful trees andopen spaces. Students also interact with afriendlyandattentivefacultyandstaff.

The Oregon State Capitol Building is locatedacross State Street from Waller Hall.

WU Athletic Facilities

Membersof themen’sandwomen’srowingteamshave theirownboathouse locatedon thewestbankof theWillametteRivernearWallaceMarine Park. The team holds workouts on theWillametteRiverindowntownSalem. The boathouse provides a place for storingWU’sracingshellsandgivestheteamaplacetocomplete various types of dry land training. Italso is a great location for meetings and otherteamfunctions. JohnLewisFieldisthehomeof WillametteBearcat baseball. The field is located at Roy S.“Spec” Keene Stadium at Bush’s Pasture Park.The stadium features chairback seating in partof thegrandstand.Overallcapacityis1,000. Willamette’sfootballteamplayshomegamesatMcCullochStadium, locatednearJohnLewisField. The football stadium is two blocks fromcampusandjustoneblockfromSalemHospital.The stadium seats 2,400, with lights for nightgames and an athletic training room, allowingathletestoreceiveon-sitetreatment. McCullochStadiumhas aFieldTurf playingsurface, along with spacious locker rooms andmeeting rooms. It provides the atmosphere ofanoldstadium,butwithmodernconveniences. The Charles Bowles Track, located insideMcCulloch Stadium, is an all-weather facilitythat showcases Willamette’s track and field and crosscountryteams,whichhostmeetseachyear. Theentirefootball,track,crosscountryandbaseballcomplex isatBush’sPasturePark.Theparkhostscrosscountrymeetsonitswidepathsandisknownforitsartexhibitsandrosegarden.

ConeFieldHouseisthehomecourtfortheWillamettemen’sbasketball,women’sbasketballandvolleyballteams.Thearenaholds2,500fans,withplentyof seatingoneachsideof thecourt.There is aquality soundsystem,plus tables forscorekeepers,statisticiansandbroadcastmedia. Cone Field House is part of the Lestle J.Sparks Center, which houses offices for the

Department of Athletics and the Departmentof ExerciseScience.Thebuildinghasbasketball,handball and racquetball courts, aweight liftingand fitness center, classrooms and locker rooms. Also connected to the Sparks Center is theWU natatorium, home of Bearcat swimming.The natatorium, with space for 200 fans, alsocanbeseenfromaviewingareainthelobby. TheWillametteUniversitysoccerteamsplayhome games at Sparks Field, an artificial turffacility next to the Sparks Center. The field is equipped with lights for night games and seats500 spectators. The facility is one of the topcollege fields in the Northwest. ClosetotheSparksCenterandSparksFieldare six tennis courts. The men’s and women’stennisteamshostmeetsduringthespring. Ontheeastsideof campusistheWillametteSoftball Complex. It includes covered dugouts,battingcages,ascoreboardandbleachers. The WU men’s and women’s golf teamsusually practice at Illahe Hills Country Club orCreekside Golf Club. Willamette’s golf teamsalsohosttournamentsatareagolf courses.

Some of the most rewarding moments happen on the sidelines.Whether it’s a crowd of hundreds doing “The Wave” or a couple of

parents holding a sign, this is the part of any game that hits home for

us — people supporting people. In fact, it’s exactly why at American

Salem, the capital cityof Oregon as well as thesecond largest city in thestate, lies in the centerof the lush Willamette Rivervalley, 47 miles South of Portland. Salem is a cityof over 47 square miles,located an hour from theCascademountains to theeastandjustanhourfromthe ocean beaches to thewest. The population of Salem is around 147,000and is growing each yearatanaveragerateof about1.5percent. Day trips to the magnificant Oregon coast, the Cascade and Coast Mountainranges, as well as several nearby vineyardsand high desert areas offer newcomers avariety of experiences. Salem also has awidearrayof restaurants,hotelsandtouristattractions, ranging from historic sites andmuseums to events that appeal to a widevarietyof interests. Severalparksandthehistoricdistrictarewithineasywalkingdistanceof Willamette.Salem also includes farmers markets that

overflow with locally raised produce andhand-crafted products. The city is a goodbase for a tour of Oregon’s wine country.It also is the site of the Salem Arts FairandtheOregonStateFaireachyear. Salem is located close to State Parks,attractive gardens, farming communities,orchards and vineyards. Combined withglorious views of the Cascade Mountains,thevariedterrainthatiswithina30-minutedriveprovides someof themostbeautifulscenes in the Pacific Northwest.

David Bentsen joinstheBearcatsthisyearasan assistant coach. He

graduated from Pacific Lutheran University in 2006, after competing as a member oftherowingteam.AtWU,heisinhissecondyearasastudent intheCollegeof Law.Heisasolidadditiontothecoachingstaff.

Ashley San Blise isin her first year as anassistant coach for the

Bearcats. She is in her fifth year as a student and is finishing a degree in Environmental ScienceatWU.ShewasaBearcatrowerthepastfourseasonsandisproudtocontinueWU’srowingtraditions.SheisfromSalem.

SusanParkmanisinherthirdyearastheheadcoachof theWillamette

rowingteams.ShestartedatWillametteinMarchof 2006. Parkman has extensive experience withrowing,bothincompetitionandasacoach.PriortoarrivingatWillamette,shecoachedatthecollegelevelatSantaClaraUniversityandtheUniversityof Washington. She has been an assistant coach withU.S. Rowing and represented the UnitedStates as a coach at the 2004 Olympics,held in Athens, Greece. She coached theU.S.women’ssinglescullertoaninthplacefinish out of 24 entries. Her interest in rowingbegan when shewas a college student at Humboldt StateUniversity. A few years later, she becametheheadcoachatSantaClaraUniversity. Parkman then went to the Universityof Washington,whereshewasanassistantwomen’s coach. For six seasons, Parkman

was head coach at Lakeside HS in Seattle,Wash., where she helped the varsity girl’steam place several rowers at the nationallevel.Parkmanalsoworkedwithmanylocaloutreachrowingprograms. Parkman has some significant goals fortheBearcatrowers. “My goals ultimately are to win theNorthwest Collegiate Rowing Conferenceandtogetaberthat theNCAANationalsforthewomen’steam,”Parkmansaid. “I’mthrilledtoworkwithourstudent-athletesatthisstageof theirlives...helpingto teach them the skills needed to balancethe demands of academics and athletics. Iwanttoopentheireyestoseethattheyarecapableof somuchmorethantheythink.Iemphasize the skills of teamwork: trustingeachotherastheyworkhardtogether.” Parkmanisheadcoachof masterswiththe Willamette Rowing Club in Portland.She isaprofessionalphotographer,knownfor portraits and rowing photos. She livesinPortlandwithherhusband,Tiff Wood.

Jones rowed for WU’svarsity4+andvarsity8+crewslastseason. Joneswasoneof 24athletes(onlytwofromNCAA Division III) invited to the FreshmanCamp. The event was for rowers who mightlaterjointheU.S.NationalTeam. JoneswasnamedSecondTeamAll-America.ShehelpedWU’svarsity8+wintheGovernor’sCupinSalemin2007.Thispastfall,sheledWUto5thplaceattheHeadof theCharlesRegatta.

Three of Willamette’s rowers have earnedspecial recognition for their skills at combiningacademicandathleticsuccess.AdrienneHallandRebeccaRallston,bothseniorsin2006-07,wereselected as National Scholar-Athletes by theCRCA last spring, while Jessica John, a senior

in 2005-06, was chosen First Team ESPN TheMagazineAcademicAll-Districttwoyearsago. CRCAScholar-Athletesneededatleasta3.5cumulative GPA while rowing in 75% or moreof the spring meets or at a conference meet.The ESPN The Magazine Academic All-DistrictTeam required at least a 3.25 GPA plus statusasastarterorakeyreserve. Hall majored in Anthropology. She owneda 3.67 GPA. Ralston majored in Rhetoric andMediaStudiesandhada3.61GPA.Johnowneda3.95GPAandmajoredinMathematics.

Greg Henselman, a member of the rowingand swimming teams majoring in Mathematicsand Classical Studies, was one of just two WUstudents selected as Presidential Scholars for2006-07. Each Presidential Scholar received a$2,500 stipend to assist with research duringthe summer. Recipients also earned a waiverof tuition for one semester or $5,000 towardgraduate school expenses. Henselman, a seniorin 2007-08, focused his summer research on“Extending the Diagnostic Applications ofGraph Representations.” Henselman’s sponsorin the research was Erin McNicholas, assistantprofesorof mathematicsatWillamette.

Willamette’s New Hudson Racing Shell

TheWillametteUniversityrowingteamsandHeadCoachSusanParkmanchristenedtheteam’snewestracingshellathalftimeofthemen’sbasketballgameonFeb.9,2007.The Hudson Racing Shell, now known asthe“SquirrelRiley,”wasdonatedtotheWUrowing teams by Lauren Dudley and herfamily.Herson,JacobWicks(‘08),whowasgiven the honor of christening the newequipment, poured finish line water fromaroundtheworldoverthebowof theshell. WU’s new shell is identical to the boatusedbytheU.S.Olympicmen’seightinthe2004OlympicsinAthens,Greece.TheU.S.menwonthegoldmedalinthe2,000-meterrace in5:19.85, for theworld’s fastest timeeverintheevent. The shell has a carbon fiber honeycomb structure. It weighs 210 pounds and is 62feetlong.Itisdesignedtoholdeightrowersandacoxswain.

Conference and National Affiliations

Willamette is a member of theNationalCollegiateAthleticAssociation and competes inDivision III, which has over425membersandisthelargestNCAA division. The collegesin Division III place a priorityon the overall quality of theeducational experience and on successfulcompletion of each student’s academicprograms. They seek an environment inwhich a student-athlete’s activities with anathleticteamareseenasanintegralpartof hisorhereducationalexperience.Membersin Division III must sponsor at least fivemen’s sports and five women’s sports.

Athletes in Division III donot receive financial aid related to athletic ability. Willametteand other NCAA Division IIImembersencouragestudentstoparticipate by maximizing thevarietyof athleticopportunities.Primary emphasis is placed on

conference and regional play. Willametteoften sends its teams to California, Idaho,WashingtonandTexasforin-regiongames. NCAA Division III members establishan environment with cultural diversity andgender equity among student-athletes andstaff.InDivisionIII,employeescareaboutthewell-beingof theirstudent-athletes.

Western Intercollegiate Rowing Associationand Northwest Collegiate Rowing Conference

In rowing, Willamette competes in theWesternIntercollegiateRowingAssociationaswellastheNorthwestCollegiateRowingConference.TheWIRAcoverstheWesternUnitedStatesandincludesteamsfromeachlevelof collegiate rowing.This season, theWIRAChampionshipsareslatedtobeheldonMay3,withracesonLakeNatomanearSacramento,Calif. Willametteisoneof thesevenmembersinvolved in theNCRC.Other teams in theconference include Humboldt State, Lewis& Clark, Pacific Lutheran, Puget Sound, Seattle Pacific and Western Washington.Teams in the NCRC compete in NCAADivisionIIorNCAADivisionIII. ForWillamette, theNCRC includes theBearcats’mostcommonopponents.AlloftheNCRCmembers are committed to thegrowth of rowing in the Pacific Northwestand all feature talented crews. This year’sNCRCChampionshipsaresetforApril19,

with all races scheduled tobe contested atVancouverLakenearVancouver,Wash. Inothersports,WillamettecompetesintheNorthwestConference.Thenineprivatecolleges and universities in Oregon andWashington that belong to the NWC arebuilding a reputation as one of the topNCAA Division III leagues in the nation.The NWC is nationally competitive in abroadspectrumof sports.

Dr. M. Lee Pelton was appointed the 22nd president of WillametteUniversityinJuly,1999.UnderPelton’sleadership,theUniversityhasincreasedits academic profile, successfully employing strategies to attract the best faculty andthebrighteststudentsfromthestate,thenationandtheworld.Since2001,Willamette University has been ranked a top tier liberal arts college by U.S.News and World Report. President Pelton holds a doctorate from HarvardUniversity and an undergraduate degree in English and psychology fromWichitaStateUniversity,wherehegraduatedmagnacum laude in1974.Hisarea of academic focus is 19th century British prose and poetry. He served

asdeanof thecollegeatColgateUniversity(1988-91)andDartmouthCollege(1991-98).AtHarvard,hetaught in theEnglishDepartmentandwas thedeanof oneof Harvard’s13undergraduatecolleges.HeteachesatWillametteinsubjectsrangingfrom1stcenturyAthenstopost-apartheidSouthAfrica.

MarkMajeskibeganhis tenurewithWillametteUniversity inOctoberof 2000, following five years as athletic director at the University of California, Santa Cruz and four years as assistant athletic director at Menlo College.He currently serves as a member of the NCAA Division III membershipcommittee,whichprovidesoversightof theDivisionIIIprovisionalmemberprogram.Majeskipreviously servedon theNCAADivision IIImen’s tenniscommittee,overseeingchampionshipsinthatsport.Aformerbasketball,trackand softball coach, Majeski also worked venue management and operationsfor the 1994 FIFA Men’s Soccer World Cup and the 1996 Atlanta Olympic

Games.AtWU,Majeskioversees20varsity teams,with theBearcats competing inNCAADivision III,the Northwest Conference and the Intercollegiate Rowing Association. He also is the basketball liaisonbetweentheNWCcoachesandathleticdirectors.Majeskireceivedanundergraduatedegreeinjournalismfrom Menlo College and a master’s degree in higher education administration from San Jose StateUniversity.HelivesinSalemwithhiswife,Denise,andtheirson,JackHenry,age2.
