Dear Friends

Discover. Connect. Take Action.

What a fantastic year 2008 has been for Girl Scouts of Kentuckiana! Following onthe heels of world-wide recognition of Girl Scouting with the release of TransformingLeadership, a Girl Scout Research Institute study on girls’ changing attitudes aboutleadership, our council was recognized in a special way by the local community forthe work we do. We proudly received two distinguished awards – the GLI Inc.credibleAward for Non-Profit Organizations and the Alfred P. Sloan Award for BusinessExcellence in Workplace Flexibility. In addition, we made significant progress inimplementing the new Girl Scout Leadership Experience throughout Kentuckiana. And, we boosted our fund-raising efforts with new program activities in WesternKentucky and Southern Indiana. We are very proud to be a strong, thriving councilin these challenging times!

Our commitment to provide girls with girl-led, experiential, and cooperative learningactivities based on the Three Keys to Leadership is stronger than ever before.During 2008, we worked with nearly 7,000 adults in 60 counties to help more than23,000 girls

Discover confidence in their own abilities, the power of positive choices, and the thrill of new challenges.

Connect with others from their communities and across the world to form healthyrelationships, resolve conflicts, and promote diversity.

Take Action to identify local and global needs, become problem solvers, and educate and inspire others to make a difference in the world.

Of course, you help us make it all happen! The strength of our girls and their families, our volunteers, donors, and staff allows the dynamic leadership experience of GirlScouting to exist. We hope you will continue to work with us to develop the leadersof tomorrow.

Thank you for supporting Girl Scouts of Kentuckiana.

Sincerely,

Cynthia Weller Terry BlackwellCouncil President CEO

The past year was one of recognition for GirlScouts of Kentuckiana. We are very proudto have received Greater Louisville Inc.’s2008 Inc.credible Award for Non-ProfitOrganizations. The award recognizescommunity involvement, growth in employment, number of years in business, financialperformance, innovativeness of product/service, and response to adversity. The councilalso received a 2008 Alfred P. Sloan Awardfor Business Excellence in Workplace Flexibility. This prestigious award recognizes the bestflexible and effective work practices andpolicies in the nation.

Girl membership increased during 2008. Weserved 30,358 members – including 23,589girls, 6,769 adults, and 1,637 troops – witha variety of programs and activities.

During 2008, Girl Scouts of Kentuckiana tookinnovative measures to implement the newGirl Scout Leadership Experience (GSLE)throughout the council. After being trained

by GSUSA, a cadre of employees andvolunteers spread the word about the GSLE,answering questions and introducing a newcurriculum called Journeys to girls andvolunteers at eight events. We also heldcommunity conversations to inform otherstakeholders in girls’ development about thenew program. Press coverage of the GSLErecognized Girl Scouts as an expert inresearch on girls and leadership.

Press coverage overall, including newspaper, magazine, radio, and television stories, increased from 2007. We expanded theGirl Scout Press Corps to include girls fromall five service centers. We now have over40 girls involved in this program that givesthem opportunities to promote Girl Scoutingto representatives of the media.

Desserts First, our signature fundraisingevent that features gourmet desserts andhors d’ouevres made from Girl Scout Cookies, has become a great success in Louisville, with 26 chefs competing and over 600 guestsattending the 2008 event. The CavelandService Center held its inaugural DessertsFirst in Bowling Green during March. Nextyear, we will see even more of these “sweet”events across the council.

IT Services implemented a new phone systemwith conferencing capabilities that will provideease of communication among employees inour council’s wide footprint. We also launchedan Intranet to improve communications amongemployees and service centers and anExtranet for use by volunteers.

A major renovation was planned for StemAdventure Center in Laconia, Indiana.During 2008, the Paul Ogle Foundation andthe Harrison County Community Foundationawarded over $259,000 for work onKornhauser Lodge that will be completedduring 2009.

Usage of the Program and Learning Centercontinued to grow. Nearly 12,000 peoplevisited during 2008 for programs, trainings, and meetings.

The staff in Caveland was on the move as thecouncil rented a new office in Bowling Green. The new space has proven to be a significantupgrade over the previous facility.

Outreach programs continued to grow acrossthe council. These school- and neighborhood-based programs bring Girl Scouting to thosegirls who, for many possible reasons, areunable to participate in a traditional troopsetting. During 2008, more than 3,000 girlswere served in the Metro Service Centerarea. About 1,400 girls participated inCaveland, 950 participated in Bear Creek, and nearly 500 participated in Heartland.Pennyroyal conducted Hispanic Outreachprograms in Sebree and Owensboro.

In partnership with GSUSA and the DisneyChannel, Girl Scouts of Kentuckiana hostedthe “Cheetah Girl One World Premiere Party”in August. It focused on multiculturalismand health and wellness. The event was alsoa kick-off and recruitment opportunity forthe new troop year. Girls were encouragedto bring friends who were not registeredGirl Scouts. The Disney Channel providedmany incentives and prizes for girls. Morethan 2,250 adults and girls participatedcouncil-wide.

The ABC Weekend (Adults BuildingConnections) drew 175 volunteers to CampCrescendo in Lebanon Junction, where theyparticipated in workshops on Journeys andPathways, canoeing, water aerobics, kayakrolling, Greek cooking, archery, rock wallclimbing, weaving, knitting, paddlewheel boatseducation, and much more. The goal of theweekend was to provide leaders from all overthe council with the opportunity to make newfriends and learn new skills in a fun, relaxingatmosphere.

Other adult services included new trainingopportunities. We incorporated the new“Leadership Essentials,” an on-line orientationcourse, and new grade-level enrichmentcourses called “Awards and Opportunities”into our training catalog.

Since I joined Girl Scouts it hasalways had a positive impact on my life.Girl Scouts is a way of helping othersand a way to support each other. It improves self-acceptance and self-esteem. To me personally, Girl Scoutshas lit a path for me to follow. It openeddoors to show me where to go. It gaveme opportunities to try new things. It'sa way to meet new people and a way toshare experiences with others. So whensomeone asks me what Girl Scoutsmeans to me, I would have to say ‘awhole new world of experiences.’”
