A neon sign is to be erected at the entrance to the property. This will be 6 meters high and mounted on a pylon, similar to the one at Southside. This sign is being constructed in Victoria and will be transported to us. The sign will be advertising the Carson Room mainly but the Bowls Club will be signed also and there will be a signage area where different Club/Bowls events may be electronically added to the sign when required. Our next big meeting is slotted for 1 April and that will be our Half Yearly General Meeting. I will expect to see the majority of you there. The past couple of months seem to have slipped by very quickly since my last report and before
we know it the half yearly General Meeting will be upon us and this will take place on the 1st
April 2011.
Recent events include the Retirement Villages Day which saw approximately ninety bowlers
from several retirement villages take part in a great day of bowls and renewing friendships.
Many thanks to Reg Walls, John Fealy, Bev Walls and our sausage chef extraordinaire Dave “BOMBER” Bombardiere
for their tireless efforts in ensuring a successful day for all concerned.
Friendship day which took place on Tuesday 14th February was also a very successful day with approximately ninety
in attendance. It was good to see a good representation from the men's section and President Mary and the ladies
committee are to be congratulated for organising a great day. Well done ladies.
Our teams competing in the Premier 7's and Super Challenge series are performing well at present and with
sustained effort we could see some teams make the finals.
Recently an audit was carried out on both greens by Sport Turf Institute. The tests carried out included speed, draw
and level, on both greens as well as penetration and saturation tests on the grass green. I had the opportunity to
observe the tests being carried out. The results will be made available shortly and will advise accordingly. Discussions
on the day would indicate that we rated very well.
One area that needs to be addressed in the near future is our current situation with regards to Coaches and
Umpires. It is essential that we maintain sufficient numbers of these very important positions within our club. Please
contact Ron Walton, Merv Ingram or myself if you are able to assist in becoming a Coach or Umpire.

Ladies President’s Report The Bowling is in full swing – Championship both Club Selected and Annual Club Championships. The Ladies representatives in Bronze Super Challenge remain at the top of the ladder after five games. Two more to go – This week at Beachmere, we wish you onwards and upwards. We wish Cheryl; a member of the winning team up until this point a fast recovery following surgery. The Ladies Friendship Day this year deviated from the historical format – i.e. sponsoring female
friends from other Clubs. We thank our male Club Members for joining us on that day. It was fun and a further extension of the fact that we are after all one Club and sharing under one Constitution. (A little bird informed me that a few males found the morning raffles, tea etc. slow) . This is one aspect of how the female of the species raise money for our Club and have fun and friendship. The Club Fours Championship has been completed – won by Lyn Ford, Glenys Read, Veronica Elliott, Jean Davies. Congrats! Mary Ferro (President Ladies Club) Editors Note: I was there and found it to be a great day- a view shared by all the men who also attended ========================================================================== In Passing: A long term male member of this Club was in the gents one evening recently–just finished what he had
to; when a little old lady (so we are told ) tapped him on the shoulder and asked in a very weak voice “ How do I get
out of here?” Apparently took a wrong turn when coming out of ladies. One asks the question-”How long had she

FROM THE GENERAL MANAGER
The Carson Room refurbishment was finally completed in mid February with the laying of
the new carpet and was the replacement of the floor tiles in front of the servery - what a
difference it has made. I am sure that everyone will agree that the room now looks
excellent and has been money well spent. If you know someone planning a wedding or
function then send them along to see Jeff, Rita or Mary because they will be very pleased
with what the new Carson Room has to offer.
The Brisbane City Council has approved the new illuminated pylon sign and the license
and building approval has also been received meaning it is full steam ahead. The contractor has advised that it
should be in place by the end of April. What many of you would not be aware of is the pylon sign is being designed
and manufactured in Sydney. Singleton Moore Signs won the contract for the signage at Southside a couple of years
ago from a number of other Queensland and New South Wales companies because of their innovative design and
competitive pricing. We have not been disappointed with the performance of the signage and the backup service
and so we had no hesitation to engage their services again. Hopefully the new pylon sign will put the Carson Room
and the Bowls Club on the map.
Everyone would have noticed the recent installation of the fencing compounds around the industrial bins and the
pen near the loading dock for empty kegs. This work has improved two very untidy areas and provided a much
better look when driving into the car park. Another potentially dangerous hazard has also been attended to with
pavement repairs to the car park near the industrial bin compound where large “sink holes” had appeared. This area
is used by the large waste disposal trucks and hopefully the new bitumen paving will stand up to the punishment.
One of the public address system amplifiers that serves the bar lounge and the greens decided to call it a day
recently and so we have taken the first step to replacing this aging system by installing a new amplifier. Add this to
ongoing service and repairs to the plant and equipment and you can see that the maintenance is never ending.
Due to the wonderful support from the bowlers on Friday nights, Jeff and Rita are launching a dinner service on
Wednesday nights commencing on the 7th of March. The menu has an “Aussie” theme and details are available at
the club or in the March edition of the Southside Community News. What better way to finish a great afternoon of
bowls gentlemen than to enjoy a great meal at the club before going home to crash in front of the telly – no cooking
and no cleaning up. Talk to the Thursday crew, it is how they finish their day and I enjoy their company down at
Marriage Humour Husbands are husbands A man was sitting reading his papers when his wife hit him round the Head with a frying pan. 'What was that for?' the man asked. The wife replied 'That was for the piece of paper with the name Jenny on It that I found in your pants pocket'. The man then said 'When I was at the races last week Jenny was the name of the horse I bet on.' The wife apologized and went on with the housework. Three days later the man is watching TV when his wife bashes him on the head with an even bigger frying pan, knocking him unconscious. Do you understand this law?
Recently, during a Premier 7’s
competition game I noticed that a
player did not abide exactly to Law 20.
It is my belief that players should
abide this law, however, what I always look for is whether the
player has a physical problem and if such is the case I will
then check if such a player has a part of his foot on or above
the mat and if so, I will tolerate the minor misdemeanour.
20 Position on the mat
20.1 Before delivery a player should be standing
on the mat with one foot fully on the mat. At
the moment they deliver the jack or a bowl,
the player should have all or part of one foot
on or above the mat.
20.2 Before delivery a player using an approved
wheelchair should have one wheel on the
mat and, at the moment they deliver the jack
or a bowl, the player should have all or part
of one wheel on or above the mat.
20.3 Any player not meeting the terms of this law
is committing a foot-fault, and law 21 will
apply.
It surprises me the number of times that I am asked about
this Law. Some people still believe that previous
requirements such as needing to have both feet on the mat,
or one foot completely on the mat with the other behind the
mat line is still in vogue.
In fact the above law should be taken literally. One foot must
be completely on the mat prior to delivering the jack or bowl.
The other can be wherever you want to put it. The important
thing is what you do at the exact moment the jack or bowl
leaves your hand i.e. at the moment of delivery.
Only a part of that one foot, which was totally on the mat
when you took your stance, needs to be on or above the mat
at the moment of delivery. By this, we mean directly above
the confines of the mat area. Only a toe or a part of the heel
is necessary in that space. This enables a player to use their
imagination and position themselves to roll a clearer, wider
shot past a blocking bowl or deliver the bowl from a different
angle.

Do you understand this law?
As players advance to higher positions in teams and,
as thirds or skips, direct play from the head they
need to learn more about the laws of the game. I
should point out that there is an A4 sized copy of the
law book in a green hard-back folder on the small
shelf just before the door to the selectors’ office.
Please refer to it at any time you find you are in
doubt about a particular law.
Some laws are etiquette based and a good example
is Law 36. I have noticed in recent games some
players directing their team at the head have
situated themselves ahead of the jack and point
their feet toward the jack as a guide to the way they
require the bowler to bowl in to the head. This is
quite O.K. however, immediately the bowl has left
said bowler’s hand, the person directing must retire
behind the jack. Refer Law 36.1.3and 36.1.2.1
The relevant law is:-
36.1 In relation to the rink of play
36.1.1 Players at the mat-end of the rink who are
not delivering a bowl should stand at least 1
metre behind the mat.
36.1.2 Players at the head-end of the rink and who
are not controlling play should stand:
36.1.2.1 behind the jack if they are
members of the team which is in
possession of the rink;
36.1.2.2 behind the jack and away from the
head if they are members of the
team which is not in possession
of the rink;
36.1.2.3 on the surrounds of the green if
the jack is in the ditch; or
36.1.2.4 Well clear of the head if it is not
possible to stand on the
surrounds.
36.1.3 As soon as a bowl is delivered, a player who
is controlling play from a position that is
either level with or in front of the jack
should take their position as described in
law 36.1.2.
36.1.4 If a player does not meet the terms of this
law, law 35 will apply.
You should note that, although etiquette based, the penalty
can be severe. Refer Law 35. You may ask, what is so severe
about having a head declared dead? Well, in a 21 end game,
what if you were four down on the score card on end 20 and
five up on the last end only to have the end declared dead
because of an infraction such as discussed above. Suddenly a
chance to win becomes a whole new ballgame. How often
does a team win two ends in a row by 5 shots or better? It is
always wise to obey the laws of the game.

From the Club Manager, Jeff Mclennan
With the success of our Friday night bistro, we have had many
requests to open our bistro on other nights of the week. So we
are pleased to announce to you all, that Wednesday night bistro
is open for business. The menu is themed as our “Great Aussie
Mash” night with all our meals being Australian orientated. We
have fresh Australian king prawns and barramundi on offer
along with some traditional favourites of bangers and mash,
mixed grill and steak and eggs. The menu has been placed on
the tables. Bookings are advised. Friday night bistro is also a
great night with great reasonably priced meals on offer. Again
bookings are advised as it does get very busy. You can use your birthday vouchers on a Friday night. Friday night
raffles run by the Bowls Club is a great hit with patrons! We would love to see you all come and enjoy these nights.
Why not gather some friends and make a night of it. Tables can be booked at the bar with Southside staff.
We have some great upcoming shows, the first one being the Cotton, Keays & Morris show Friday 18th May. Tour of
Duty Show which will include some great hits of the 60’s and 70’s coming in June. A little later in the year we also
have Wickety Wak performing their “That’s Rock n Roll” Show. Keep a look out for posters and flyers around the
club with details.
Our Carson room is all renovated and looks great! If you or any family or friends are looking for a great venue for
their next occasion, please let them know of our fabulous facility.
I know what you’re thinking, it isn’t Jeff cos I didn’t have a picture of him so I improvised with one of my two youngest grandchildren and
any way they look better than Jeff. At least I think so. I will remedy this next issue, Editor.

Sponsorship Manager’s Report
Recent Events The recent Retirement Village Day held on 10th February was
again a great success. Despite losing a couple of teams the day prior due to illness,
we still had excellent numbers attend. For the first time since these days began, a
raffle with fruit and vegetable trays as prizes was run and proved to be very
popular with those attending. The day was sponsored by Ross Vasta MP, Federal
Member for Bonner.
Coming Events The Mt Gravatt Open Pairs event will again be held over the
Easter weekend with qualifying games on Saturday 7th and Sunday 8th April. The top 14 teams from each day will
