CHURCH CALENDAR FOR MARCH 2012
Water into Wine!
Last year (2011) marked a record in my twenty four years as a Vicar. I officiated at twenty two weddings, the average in the previous twenty three years has been around ten a year! What has brought about this rise in the number of people wishing to marry is still a mystery and 2012 looks set to carry the trend forward as at the time of going to press I have twenty three booked with another in the pipeline!
Whatever the reason for the rise in numbers there is one constant amongst all the weddings I‟ve had the pleasure of officiating at, with

reference to Jesus‟ first recorded miracle found in John‟s gospel chapter two, the turning of water into wine at a wedding celebration
This was an „Ordinary Wedding‟ in Cana in Galilee in first century Israel, displaying all the expected trappings. Jesus along with Mary and his disciples were guests and the festivities were in full swing, when the wine ran out, which was a social disaster for the family. Jesus‟, to him simple action, showed how he cares about the ordinary things of life as well as the spiritual and the joyful as well as the sad occasions.
It was his mother Mary who alerted Jesus to the problem. However, his initial response to the situation seemed harsh and almost rude. Never-theless, Jesus was an extraordinary person who was respectful and would sort things out in his own way and time. On the basis of his claim to be God, this shouldn‟t surprise us! Just as he is able to turn water into wine, so he can turn around our circumstances in amazing ways.
The turning of the water into wine took place because people trusted him (like Mary, v3) and responded to his power and authority (like the servants, v 5,7,8). The resulting 600 litres of wine was the best at the wedding! This extraordinary outcome not only pleased the host as well as the guests, it also showed that Jesus came into this world as Messiah to inaugurate a new age, figuratively speaking, the cheap wine of this world is to give way to the new wine of God‟s Kingdom.
From an „Ordinary Wedding‟ celebration, an „Extraordinary Man‟ put his first indelible mark on the world, no magic trick just the „Power and Authority‟ in his voice produced an „Extraordinary Outcome‟. To quote a twenty first century saying, „the rest they say is history‟.
The disciples, who were a real rag, tag and bobtail outfit after witness-ing Jesus‟ authority responded by putting their full faith in him and look what they achieved!
As we turn our thoughts towards Easter why not take a look again at this „Extraordinary Man‟ who deals with the ordinary as well as the extraordi-nary, the physical as well as the spiritual and listen to his voice which is as powerful today as when he said to the servants fill the jars with water!

Women‘s Institute
Autism Concern will be our subject for our next meeting
which will be on Monday 19th March, 7.30pm in the Vil-
lage Hall. Our speaker will be Alison Goodman. If you
find this subject interesting please come along and find
out more.
For the first time in many years our speaker for last month failed to
turn up but we had a fantastic evening getting to know each other,
something we have little time for when we have a speaker. Most spoke
a little about their lives so far, there were some surprises and lots of
laughs.
Visitors as always will be most welcome, the cost £3 includes refresh-
ments.
We have started our annual Skittles Tournament and have played 2
matches. Ok we lost both but in the words of the song ―We have high
hopes‖.
The W.I. match against the Chequers Village Ladies Team
was again a brilliant night, we lost making it 2-1 to the
Village Ladies. Thank you to all those who played for us when
half our team could not make it. (report on later page ) Jenny Dellar
ARE YOU A CULPRIT Do your bushes suffer from overhang? You only have to walk around the village to realise that several areas are almost impassable due to foliage blocking the pathway. Spring is a good time to cut these down before the birds start nesting.

special day? Cakes for every occasion:

Neighbourhood Watch I am quite happy to report that we seem to have had a quiet month in the village, although neighbouring villages have not faired too well, with incidents in Kislingbury, Gayton and Milton Malsor. As always please be alert and report any suspicious activity to the NHW line. Our local number is 01604 432436 (standard rate
charges), or the national number for all non emergency calls to the police is 101. Please could you also notify Christy on 831020 if you do report a crime. Let‟s hope we remain crime free.
Paving slabs wanted We are trying to pave a base for a shed so If anyone has about 12 paving slabs lying around that they don‟t need, please ring Margaret or Christy on 831020
Easter Sunday—April 8th
If anyone would like to donate a lily or flowers of
your choice in memory of a loved one for
arrangement in church, please contact June

Hoax Emails There are a number of hoax emails in circulation that alleg-
edly promote safety advice given by Northamptonshire Po-
lice.
These are chain emails and hopefully, the exaggerated con-
tents are a clue to the fact — even though the hoaxers attribute the
information to a genuine source.
Any important advice and information will have been made available
through an official or trustworthy route, so checking an organisation‘s
website or local news outlets should help in deciding if something is
genuine.
As with chain letters, the best advice is NOT to forward chain emails
and spread the misinformation more widely but simply delete them.

FOUR
‘LENT LUNCHES’ TO ENJOY AROUND THE VILLAGE
ON WEDNESDAYS THROUGH MARCH.
ALL WELCOME. 12.30PM - 2PM.
BRING A FRIEND, EAT, CHAT AND THEN MAKE A DONATION AS YOU LIKE.
YOUR MONEY WILL GO STRAIGHT OUT TO
AN ORPHANAGE IN IGANGA (UGANDA)
At this time of year, on a Wednesday, „lent lunches‟ are hosted in differ-
ent houses around the village. They are very informal, simple lunches, of soup, fresh bread and then cheese – we sometimes get home-made cakes as well but that depends on whose house we are in!
In the past, monies raised have gone towards the building of a clinic
and nurses accommodation in the remote village of Namunsaala in Uganda.
This project is now complete so this year the church have agreed to
donate everything we raise over Lent to an orphanage in Iganga. Feeding 25 children every day is a challenge, so every penny helps.
Please drop in to as many as you can make.
No need to ‘book’!

Live Music in Rothersthorpe I‘ve been making enquiries about getting a
young singer called Lisbee Stainton to come
along to the village hall for an evening of live
music. She supported Joan Armatrading at
the Derngate last year and has produced two
Albums. For more information and to hear
some of her music go to: http://lisbeestainton.com/home.html.
She charges £150 for delivering two forty minute sets and I need to as-
sess interest from within the village before committing to booking a date.
I was thinking of charging £10 per person with any profits split between
the church and the school.
Please email me ([email protected]) or call me (01604 830321) if you
would be interested in coming to a live music event within the village.
Many thanks Steve McCarthy

News from Rothersthorpe School:
A s we return to school after the half term break, and the
evenings are getting lighter, our after school clubs are all
resuming, so villagers may see more activity around school after
the quiet winter months!
A total of 97 children and adults took part in the
Sign2Sing event last month and we are waiting to
hear if the national event broke the record from
previous years! We were also pleased to send a
donation to the Sign Health charity who organised
the event.
Continuing the theme of fundraising, we will be
holding the usual mufti day for Sport Relief on 23rd
March and our children are currently voting for this
year‘s chosen national charity, which we will be sup-
porting with a number of planned activities for the
rest of the school year.
School closes for the Easter break after our Easter Service on
Friday 30th March and the children return to school on Tuesday
17th April.

NORTHAMPTONSHIRE ACRE BULK OIL BUYING PROJECT
You may remember that last.autumn saw the launch of the Northampton-shire ACRE Bulk Oil Buying Project. We‟re pleased to report that it‟s fully up and running.
Since we began in October our membership has grown to almost 60. The prices negotiated on behalf of the members and the average member sav-ings are shown below:
The benefits to individual members are:
A saving of £25 - £30 per 500 litres ordered vs average prices quoted by the oil companies.
No need to buy larger volumes to get lower prices as your individ-ual order is a small part of a much larger one.
Avoid the hassle of ringing round for quotes – leave it to our pro-fessional negotiator.
The benefits to our local community are: A communal sharing of the price benefits. Reduction in tanker traffic though our villages.
Already a member?
Many thanks to those villagers who‟ve already joined the scheme, and don‟t forget that the ordering deadline is the last Wednesday of each month.
Not yet a member?
If you‟re not yet a member, but would like to join, please feel free to use the contact details below. You can see from the above figures that the potential savings opportunities are well worth taking. The greater the number of members in the syndicate, the greater will be the opportunity to negotiate the lowest possible market prices for all members to enjoy.

Lent ―Talent" Challenge
in aid of Church Repairs Can you double your money like the good servant in
the parable (read the story in Matthew‘s gospel
Chapter 25 verse 14).
The six weeks leading up to Easter are known as Lent. Instead of
giving up something during Lent, why not take up the challenge to
turn £1, £2 or £5 into more. We‘ll be pleased to hear from anyone
who would like to take part and we can let you have the ‗starter‘
sum.
The idea is to be as imaginative as you like. Buy a bottle of car
shampoo and wash a few cars/ bake a cake for a friend/ plant some
seeds and sell the plants. Or maybe just donate an hour of your
time babysitting or dog walking for a small fee.
Lent started on 22nd February – get your thinking caps on.

Chequers versus W.I. Skittle Match 26/1/12
Well another epic eventful evening and yes it was sleet and snow
outside, which did not stop some of us coming out to play. Special thanks goes to Elaine Quarry ( on crutches, ankle in plaster), Hayley and Lisa from behind the bar who played for the W.I., and Ben who played for the Chequers. |The score was 34-30 to the Chequers and raised £30.00 for the church repair fund. Well done to all who came, played and supported.
. That‟s 2 –1 to Chequers so until the next
time ladies!! Thank you Carol Morphy
Village Survey A very big thank you to all those who took
the time to complete the village survey and
an even bigger thank you to all those
volunteers who trudged through snow, sleet
and rain to deliver and collect them. If there
are any stray completed forms which have
not yet been collected please post them
through the door of 35 Church Street.
We have received a very high return rate
which indicates the community spirit within the village. Over the
next two months the team will be compiling the data and making the
information available to everyone. Before producing the report we
will hold a public meeting to ensure all views are represented and
fully understood. The village plan will outline the future of the
village based upon your opinions.
