2012 reportto the community

By eighth grade, only half as many girls as boys are interested in math, science, and engineering careers. If each of us gives a girl our time and support today, she can find the courage, confidence, and character she’ll need to build a better tomorrow.

The Girl Scout PromiseOn my honor, I will try:

To serve God and my country,To help people at all times,And to live by the Girl Scout Law.

The Girl Scout LawI will do my best to be

honest and fair, friendly and helpful, considerate and caring, courageous and strong, andresponsible for what I say and do,

and to respect myself and others, respect authority, use resources wisely, make the world a better place, andbe a sister to every Girl Scout.

The Girl Scout MissionGirl Scouting builds girls of courage, confidence, and character, who make the world a better place.

Dear friends and supporters of Girl Scouting:

In 2012 Girl Scouts celebrated its Centennial, using this unique moment in history to declare 2012 the Year of the Girl. As we reflected on the first century of Girl Scouting, recognizing our rich history and the vision of our founder Juliette Gordon Low, we also moved boldly forward with the launch of the ToGetHerThere initiative, dedicated to girls’ leadership issues.

Studies from the Girl Scouts Leadership Institute demonstrate that negative influences abound, including peer pressure to not stand out, unhealthy images in the media about beauty, a lack of mentors, little support for girls with an interest in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM), and bullying.

What will it take to break down societal barriers that hinder girls from leading and achieving success in everything from technology and science to business and industry? It’s up to all adult members of society – mothers, fathers, corporations, governments, and nonprofits – to help each girl reach her leadership potential and enjoy success as she defines it.

Girl Scouts is dedicated to helping girls achieve their full leadership potential, because when girls succeed, so does society. Who better than Girl Scouts, with its scale and time-honored place in society, to work towards balanced leadership? And while we do so, we must seek to ensure that each girl is ready for that future, connecting with her peers in an environment where she can build the confidence and skills she needs to become a leader.

It is the passion and unflagging dedication of our committed adult volunteers and community supporters that never ceases to inspire and encourage us to provide the best leadership experience possible. Please know how much we appreciate your time, energy, and financial support to Girl Scouting. Together, we can get her there!

Nearly 16,500 girls and 7,000 adults in southeast Louisiana were active Girl Scouts, committed to living by the Girl Scout Promise and Law.

Over 3,000 Girl Scouts and their families attended the council’s Centennial Extravaganza in Gonzales. It was a day of fun and exploration, with an interactive historic exhibit, activities related to the international sisterhood of Girl Scouting including a parade of flags, demonstrations, a panel of women community leaders discussing female leadership, a carnival of rides, and more.

About 6,000 individuals participated in council-sponsored programs including a STEM Day held in Donner where girls launched rockets, programmed a robot to follow their instructions, explored the

day sky and star gazed at night using telescopes, plus many other exciting scientific demonstrations and hands-on presentations. This program was part of the council’s initiative to increase girls’ involvement in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM).

Nearly 200 girls interested in the latest in technology, found Girl Scouts the “cool” place to be by participating in three Geek Squad Summer Academies, where they enjoyed team-building activities that included a PC build where girls learned to tear down and re-build a computer, computer programming, digital photography, and digital music.

463 girls enjoyed summer resident camp programs at Camp Marydale and Camp Whispering Pines.

About 450 Girl Scouts attended seven summer day or twilight camps located across southeast Louisiana, which were directed solely by volunteers.

Approximately 1,300 girls became Girl Scouts through innovative outreach programs held in housing developments and schools in Baton Rouge and New Orleans.

About 5,500 individuals utilized the council’s three camp properties and one in-town cabin for troop and service unit camping, with 25 service

units receiving a free service unit encampment, for achieving their unit’s goal in the council’s Annual Family Giving Campaign.

Covington Girl Scouts “took action” by raising over $5,000 to build stairs down the bank of the Bogue Falaya River at Girl Scout Camp Covington. The stairs were built by volunteers to provide campers with easier access to the shallow water for wading.

Girl Scouts launched its first Smart Cookie U at Southeastern Louisiana University to build on the business skills learned in the Girl Scout Cookie program, the largest girl-led business in the country. Girls sold nearly 1.25 million boxes of cookies, and 200 girls were inducted into the Cookie Hall of Fame for selling 500 boxes of cookies or more.

Alumnae, volunteers, supporters, and staff celebrated the Girl Scout Centennial throughout 2012: in the State Rotunda on March 12, the opening day of the Louisiana legislative session; at a Centennial luncheon in Baton Rouge during Girl Scout Week; a Rhapsody in Green Centennial Gala and FOREver Green golf tournament in New Orleans in June; and the first Women of Distinction luncheon in November.

Fourteen former Girl Scout council board presidents/chairs were honored as 2012 Women of Distinction, for their leadership in guiding the two legacy Girl Scout councils through our first century of Girl Scouting.

Seven Girl Scout Seniors/Ambassadors were honored for earning the Girl Scout Gold Award in 2011-12 at a pinning ceremony and reception at the Governor’s Mansion in Baton Rouge. In 2012, 89 Girl Scout Cadettes also earned the Girl Scout Silver Award, and 79 Girl Scout Juniors earned the Girl Scout Bronze Award.
