EXALTED RULER’S MESSAGE
fought them tooth and nail, only to find that once we got used to them, the effort to accept the changes were well worth it. There have been many changes throughout the years in the Elks – as an organization, and in Lodges across the Country – and change is necessary for growth. We want our Lodge to prosper and our membership to excel. Sometimes, it means we need to change the way we are doing things – if only to keep up with the times. This takes everyone’s help, input, and cooperation in order to succeed. We hope that you will provide fresh ideas for ways to make your Lodge better – even if it means changing the way things have always been done. I’m especially looking for ways to increase our membership. Please don’t be shy about expressing your thoughts. I welcome your suggestions, so please contact me at [email protected] or stop me in the Lodge and let’s talk. But happily, some things will never change about our Lodge. We will continue to serve our communities with the grants we are able to obtain. The Scholarship program, Hoop Shoot, Soccer Shoot, and Essay contests will involve and
Hopefully by this time, most of the snow and cold has subsided. I would like to commend all who have been elected as Officers for the upcoming year. This is the first time Parma Lodge #1938 has had a third Exalted Ruler from one immediate family. My father, Dr. Wade H. Harris Jr., served from 1975-1976, my brother, Wade H. Harris III, from 2001-2002, and now I am honored to be your Exalted Ruler for 2015-2016. What an interesting distinction for our Lodge. I’m curious to find out how many other Lodges have attained this achievement, and will be inquiring when I proudly represent our Lodge at the Grand Lodge Convention in July. I’ll get back with you on this in the August INFO. As the song goes, “The times they are a changin’.” Family lifestyles have changed. Do you remember a life before computers, cell phones, smart phones, C.D.s, DVRs, and remote controls? Remember when you had to get up to change the T.V. channels? Now we spend half our time searching for the remotes for everything. None of these changes were an easy transition and many of us
reward our youth. We will continue to raise funds for C.P. and for E.N.F. that benefit a wide range of projects. The Changing of the Guard begins a new Lodge year and I appreciate all who helped make Installation and the Inaugural Party a success. But most importantly, a heartfelt THANK YOU to our membership for supporting your Lodge and this great fraternal organization to which we belong.

April Birthdays An article in the July 2003, Guideposts
magazine explained how the stars for Alaska, our
49th state, and Hawaii, our 50th state, were placed
on the flag after they joined the union in 1959.
In the Spring of 1958, a 17-year-old
student at a high school in Lancaster, Ohio by the
name of Robert Heft was given a class assignment
by his history teacher to come up with a project
that demonstrated his interest in history. It had to
be something visual and original.
While riding the bus through downtown
Lancaster, he saw the flag on the top of City Hall
and it convinced him to design a new flag.
At the time, Alaska was soon to become
the 49th state, and everyone was saying they were
going to add another state to balance it out. He
thought perhaps Hawaii would become the 50th
state.
So he sketched out a design at home that
night with five rows of six stars and four
alternating rows of five stars. He got his family’s
3 x 5 flag out of the closet and cut out the
blue and white-starred corner.
His mother was horrified and yelled at him
that he had desecrated the flag. But he told her it
was for a school project and he would make it
look okay.
Then he bicycled downtown and bought a
new piece of blue cotton broadcloth and some iron
-on mending tape. With a cardboard pattern, he
traced one hundred stars on the tape and cut them
out so he would have one for each side of the flag.

Bingo was held at Broadview MutltiCare on March 19th and, as always, a great time was had by all. If you
have never been to one of our bingos, you are missing out…please consider joining us for our next bingo
which will be held at 7 on April 16th.
We are actively seeking volunteers to assist with our Panera bakery deliveries—we realize everyone is
busy, especially with summer fast approaching—that is why the more volunteers, the better—that way each
volunteer would only need to commit to once a month or so—if you are interested, please contact Fran
Trozzi at 216.469.7401.
Don’t forget about our upcoming garage sale June 6th—what better day to do something for our Veterans
than D-Day—a day when so many gave so much!
Finally, several folks have approached me about joining the Veterans Committee but have said they are
afraid of the commitment—just because you are on the committee doesn’t mean you have to be involved in
all activities. We have members who join us for only specific activities and/or duties—you don’t have to
“do it all” to help—every little bit helps, so please consider joining us.
As always, thanks for all you do for our Veterans.
VETERAN’S
Do Something Nice! Every time you do something nice
for the Elks, we’ll put your name in
the hopper for a chance to win a
monthly prize valued at
$25.00! See complete details
in the Lounge.
That’s right—you could win just for
helping out! Monthly drawings will
be held on the last Tuesday of each
month. (entries will be discarded
after each drawing).
Winner for

Malley’s Easter Candy A big thank you to all who supported our Malley’s Easter Candy sales. This is a very simple way to make money for the Lounge and who doesn’t like Malley’s??. Only thirteen members and or “couple” members placed orders and while we certainly would have liked to see more member orders, we were still able to make some money for the Lounge—it is monies such as these that can be used for fun improvements like our new 60” TV. A big tip of the Elks Antlers to Kim Smith and Tricia Henry—they took the order forms to their places of work and brought in close to $600.00 in sales!—thanks Kim and Tricia and all who ordered for supporting your Lounge!!!!
Queen of Hearts
The House Committee is considering some changes to the Queen of
Hearts drawing. Amongst other ideas, it has been suggested that the winner must be present to win along with eliminating some of the prizes. Bottom line is everyone would like to see the pot increase at a faster rate. Changes will be voted on in May. In the meantime, please let us know your suggestions. While not all suggestions can be put into place, they certainly can’t be put in place if they are not heard! Kindly see any member of the House Committee with your sug-gestions or feel free to call Fran at 216.469.7401. We look forward to getting some excitement back in the game!!

GARAGE SALE
SATURDAY, JUNE 6TH
The Veteran’s Committee will hold a garage sale in the hall on Saturday, June 6th from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Tables run $10.00 each and will be available on a first come/first serve basis. If you have items that you wish to donate for our sale, we will have a “Veteran’s table” for donated items and all proceeds will benefit the Veterans. We do ask that you donate only usable items in good condition. We will also be holding a bake sale in conjunction with the gar-age sale. Please consider baking (buying) for this event! We will accept all baked goods donations beginning June 3
rd until sale
time. Immediately following the sale, we will have a donation truck available so that any items that are not sold can be donated to a charity that benefits Veterans—so no worries about lugging unsold items back home!!! It’s a win/win for everyone! Please mark your calendars for the sale and see Fran Trozzi (216.469.7401) or Ed Blythn (330.741.0367) to reserve your table. See you at the sale!!!!

His mother refused to sew the blue broadcloth, so he got out her old foot-operated Singer machine and
sewed it himself. He then ironed on the stars. The teacher was not impressed. He said it wasn't a real flag
because the real flag didn't have 50 stars yet. He received a barely passing grade. He spoke up to the teach-
er and said that he believed he deserved a better grade because someone else had done a collage of leaves
and got an A. The teacher's reply was, "If you don't like the grade, go get the flag accepted in Washing-
ton!" So that's what Robert decided to do. He bicycled over to the home of his congressman, Walter
Moeller, knocked on the door, gave him the flag, and explained what it was for. Robert asked the con-
gressman if he would take the flag back to Washington and if there was ever a contest to determine the
design for a 50 star flag, would he present it at that time. The congressman agreed, however, Robert felt he
was just trying to appease him. He waited for two years, and in January 1959, Pres. Eisenhower signed a
proclamation announcing the admisson of Alaska as the 49th state. New stars are always added to the
flag on the following July 4th, and so a flag was made with seven rows of seven stars that became almost
immediately obsolete because in August 1959, just does Robert had expected, Hawaii did become the 50th
state. Robert was out of high school, working as a draftsman and going to college at night.
