SCRIPTURE STUDY The St. Lucy Bible Study Group will be examining the first book of the Bible, the Book of Genesis, in an 11 week course starting Monday, January 26, 2015 at 7 pm in PAC B. The identical course will be offered at 10 am in PAC B starting Thursday, January 29, 2015. The suggested donation to cover the cost of books, materi-als, and shipping is $18 per person. Contact Jim Miller at 408-377-5070 if you have any questions.

ST. LUCY PARISH ENVIRONMENTAL STEWARDSHIP UPDATE

“The relationship between individuals or communities and the environment ultimately stems from their relationship with God. When ‘man turns his back on the Creator’s plan, he provokes a disorder which has inevitable repercussions on the rest of the created order.” (Pope Benedict XVI, Letter to the Ecumenical Patriarch of Constantinople on the Occasion of the Seventh Symposium of the Religion, Science and the Environment Movement, September 1, 2007)

As previously announced, we at St. Lucy have been evaluating where we, as a parish community and as a member of the larger global community, need to improve our stewardship and management of our resources. After much research and prayer by members of the Stewardship Committee, and with the approval of the Administration Commission, the Pastoral Council, and the Diocese, we have decided to replace approximately 10,500 square feet of lawn on parish grounds with drought resistant landscaping (does not include the school lawns). Not only are we aligning our actions to better care for and love of God’s creation, this change will result in substantial savings in our monthly water bill and is in keeping with the California drought program for conserving water resources.

It is very important that we become better stewards of our resources and of God’s creation. Some of the things this pro-ject will do: Reduce the parish’s water consumption significantly; Use "bay friendly" sustainable practices (rather than conventional landscaping practices that utilize pesticides, herbicides, and artificial fertilizers); Replace the water-consuming lawn with drought-resistant plants, including native and useful plants on the water district's approved plant list.

We are choosing to do the conversion project at this time because the Santa Clara Valley Water District (SCVWD) is a providing a $2.00 per sq. ft. rebate for lawn areas that are converted to drought-resistant landscaping per their guidelines which is being to help fund the conversion project. The SCVWD has a strict list of drought tolerant plants, trees, ground cover and media that must be used.

The parish has identified a commercial landscape company with significant experience in SCVWD rebate projects and bay friendly landscaping to perform the work. Therefore, we anticipate beginning the lawn conversion program sometime in February or early March 2015. For questions, please contact Raymond Langford, Parish Administrator.

Notice form Bishop Patrick McGrath

The Public Health Officer of Santa Clara County has again requested that we make a number of temporary adaptations to our celebration of the Eucharist, so as to foster the health of our worshiping communities during the Flu/cold/virus season:

- Holy Communion will not be shared under the Consecrated Wine. - Holy Communion will only be distributed into the hands of the communicants. - People should not hold hands during the recitation of the Lord’s Prayer. - The Sign of Peace should be adapted so as to allow for a greeting that does not involve shaking hands or touching. - All who administer Holy Communion are to wash their hands with alcohol-based anti-bacterial solution. - Please remember, the obligation to attend Mass does not hold for those who are ill. We ask that you remain at home until

you have recovered.
