Family Perspective During this season we give gifts to

friends and family. The gospel asks us if

we plan to share with those who have

little or nothing. If our impoverished

brothers and sisters aren’t on our gift

list, we may be missing the point of

Christmas. Especially during this Jubilee

Year of Mercy, let us be generous with

our charitable giving.

Gifts for Baby Jesus in support of

Birthright of Lorain County.

See the Flyer in this week’s bulletin for

gift suggestions. We like these items to

be new. The items are used to make up

Layette Sets for babies whose Mother

has come to Birthright for guidance and

support. Please bring your gifts to Mass

December 24 and December 25. Children

may bring them up to the alter during

the offertory. Our gifts will help

Birthright to provide almost 300

Layettes in the coming months.

Christmas Bells Christmas bells are

believed to announce

the arrival of baby

Jesus and mark the

beginning of the holiday season. The

tinkling sound of bells guide the lost

sheep back to the fold, just like the

Lord would guide us to walk in His ways.

St. Julie Billiart Parish 3rd Sunday of Advent

From the Desk of Father George

Greetings Parishioners and Friends of St. Julie’s,

As the third candle of Advent burns steady and bright this day,

our time of waiting for the Light of the World is nearly to an end. The

words of the Prophet Zephaniah: “Shout for joy… Sing joyfully… Be glad and exult with all your heart” tell us to enter into the mystery of

our waiting. Imagine the anticipation of those who heard The Baptist

proclaiming the nearness of the messiah. How often do any of us pause

to reflect upon the joy of our salvation… the work God has done in our

midst? Perhaps this is a perfect time to enter in!

Entering into the joy of this third Sunday also calls us to be

persons of great action and generosity. Each of us has many gifts and

obligations. Stop worrying about what others might have or do.

Instead, focus upon being the best you can be and do it with joy to

celebrate God’s love for you.

With the big day a little more than a week away, it’s time to put

the finishing touches upon our preparations. While the stockings may

already be hung on the chimney with care and containers of cookies

await hungry mouths, have we tended to the preparation of our hearts?

The greatest gift we might offer to a family member or friend in this

Year of Mercy is acceptance or forgiveness. Placing ourselves into the

framework of God’s love means we live by His love. Allow this final full

week of Advent to be one of even greater preparation and joyfulness.

Remember: “Emmanuel – God is with us.”

Beginning on December 17th, the church liturgy celebrates The ‘O’ Antiphons. These ancient phrases remind us of the fast approaching

feast of the long awaited Messiah. They are excellent ‘food for prayer’ by the message they contain.

December 17th O Wisdom (O Sapientia) December 18th O Sacred Lord (O Adonai) December 19th O Flower of Jesse’s Stem (O Radix Jesse) December 20th O Key of David (O Clavis David) December 21st O Radiant Dawn (O Oriens) December 22nd O King of all Nations (O Rex Gentium) December 23rd O God with Us (O Emmanuel)

Poinsettia Mexico is the native

home of this holiday

flower and its legend.

On Christmas Eve

villagers placed gifts at

the Nativity scene. Folklore claims a

peasant boy had no gift and prayed

outside the door. His prayers were

answered when a red flower

appeared through the snow. Joel

Poinsett an amateur botanist brought

the flower to this country in the

1820’s. It is named in his honor.
