Are you interested in serving your parish family in the capacity of being on the Parish Council?
The Parish Council Members have completed their three (3) year term. They may choose to run again, but will need to be re-elected. We are looking for new and fresh faces to help assist the pastor in the “on-goings” of the parish and offer their opinions and input. There will be 10 elected spaces and 2 appointed spaces.
Purpose: To assist the pastor in his leadership role of planning, organizing, initiating, promoting, coordinating and reviewing the evangelization, worship, Faith Formation and service activities within the parish.
Objectives: To assess adequately the needs of the whole parish and its members, and to develop and implement a pastoral plan which will promote the common good of the parish.
To foster unity and a sense of community in the parish and to coordinate all parish activities in a manner that will best serve the interests of the parish.

Due to the large number of cars at
Anne Savacool's Funeral Mass, our "concerned neighbor" called the police again. At least they did not
ticket the funeral home this time. So please be aware of the "No
Parking" signs when coming to church.
Thank you and pray for our neighbor. They
evidently need extra prayers if they feel fine calling the police on people mourning the loss
of loved ones.
Adoration of the Most Blessed
Sacrament will be suspended for the summer months of July and August.
With so many people away
during these months, the attendance at First Friday
Adoration has not been sufficient to continue during the summer.
We will resume Adoration after
Labor Day on Friday, September 6th.

Thrift Shop Morning or afternoon shifts of 3 hours.
Shifts are 10:00am until 1:00pm or 1:00-4:00pm
We are open Thursdays and Fridays from 10:00am until 4:00pm
and Saturdays 9:30am until 12:30pm
Sacred (+) Linens The washing and ironing of the
sacred linens used at the altar (every 3 months).
School is over for the summer and the children are home for all their meals. We want to thank everyone who has dropped off hot dogs, cheese, frozen Pizzas and frozen meals. This has been a great help in what we can offer to our clients.
Currently, we do not need anymore Mac and Cheese or Pasta.
The Food Pantry needs the following items: Paper towels, toilet paper, deodorant for men and women, bar soap, men’s shampoo, conditioner and body wash, dish soap, Spam, can chicken, Hamburger Helper (all varieties), instant oatmeal (all flavors), sweet cereals, coffee, tea and cookies. Another way you could help is to purchase a Walmart or Grocery Store gift card and tell us what you would like us to buy. The gift cards could be for any amount.

The Father Michael J. Burke Thrift Shop, (now located across the street from the church at 17 Halsted Street) is having it’s Annual Summer bag sale from July 11th - August 3rd. Fill a bag for $4.00. We are also having a Christmas in July sale on all Christmas merchandise (Christmas items are not included in the bag sale).
The shop hours are Thursdays and Fridays from 10:00am to 4:00pm and Saturdays from 9:30am to 12:30pm. The Thrift Shop will be closed on July 4th-6th.

What is inside of you?
to fire her for being a heretic. I truly tormented her often and about many things, but probably nothing more than her accent. And she loved every minute of it.
Those of us who attend daily Mass where Anne often read from the Sacred Scriptures, a few times a year she read Psalm 95 in a way that only she could: “If today you hear His voice, harden not your hearts.” She told me often that when she practiced the Readings for daily Mass and when certain words would appear, she could hear me making fun of her already; like God, source, hearts, Apostles, martyrs and the list continued. But she was a trooper and continued to do what she loved the most; being at Mass and proclaiming the Word of God to the rest of us. Anne was truly a sign and symbol of her and our Catholic faith.
And speaking of signs and symbols. Over 25 years ago when I first came to New Jersey, I was assigned to Union City with my former bishop. At that time, Saint Michael’s Monastery for the Passionist Fathers, was being sold to a Protestant Church. The new owners not only moved all the clergy and religious from their graves to another Catholic cemetery, but they were completely gutting the inside of this beautiful church. Candelabras were thrown out, side altars were being smashed with sledge hammers and the baldacchino over the main altar was being replaced by a dropped ceiling. It was so very painful to watch what was happening to this beautiful (once) Catholic Church and landmark that could be seen as far away as from the Parkway.
As I was leaving the construction site, I passed by a huge green dumpster and out of the corner of my eye I saw this black case. I knew that only one thing could be inside of such a case.. And it had to be a monstrance. That very monstrance is the same one that is above the tabernacle today. Imagine such beauty, such precious gems as amethysts and emeralds, thrown in the garbage? So I was not proud to dumpster dive and salvaged this beautiful monstrance from being destroyed and thrown away like garbage.
I share with you this story, because it was the shape and size of this case that made me know immediately what was on the inside. For it was by its outside, that I knew what was on the inside. And that is what comes to mind when I think of today’s Solemnity of Corpus Christi. When we take the time to come and share the Eucharist, to celebrate the Mass, to participate in Sacrifice of Christ on the Cross once again, we become the signs and symbols of Christ Himself.
Just as it took, not a second thought, for me to know what was inside this black case, there should be no second thought from others who see us to know what is inside of us, especially at Mass. For it is the Lord Himself who comes to dwell in our physical bodies. For as the Lord told us “For as often as you eat this bread and drink this cup, you proclaim the death of the Lord until He comes again”. When I saw this case, I knew what was inside. When I saw Anne Savacool, I knew what was inside. What do people think is inside of you when they see you?
At the request of several people, I am reprinting my homily given on the Feast of Corpus Christi two weeks ago. It has truly been a long few months and even this past year has been marked by the deaths of so many close and personal friends, husbands, wives, parents and unfortunately even our children. This week we unfortunately had to add to this list, our beloved Anne Savacool, among those we have lost and heaven has gained. Just mentioning her name brings a smile to my face as I envision her unique gait and distinctive style of dressing, with matching earrings, colored coordinated outfits, and of course somewhere a flag, banner, sticker, hat, scarf or gloves with “Boston Red Sox” somewhere emblazoned upon them, if not all of them at once. And who could forget her wonderful Boston accent. For Anne truly possessed a unique gift that made everyone she encountered, smile.
I speak about Anne specifically this week, not only because she was the heart and soul of hospitality for our parish, and is a great loss to all of us, but also because when we hear the Gospel of Saint Luke this week on the Feast of Corpus Christi, we hear how Jesus gathered the people, healed them and fed them. So, we too are called to do the same in our lives.
Anne Savacool was truly a person that exemplified these very attributes, qualities and gifts in her life. She always gathered people wherever she went. Anne loved to talk and talk and then talk some more. Usually right before and always after Mass. After four years of telling her to stop talking in church after daily Mass, she finally got the point and brought her conversations to the steps of the church. She was so proud of being obedient (even if it took 4 years).
Anyone that has ever gone to “Coffee And,” “High Tea” or the Parish Appreciation Dinner, knew that Anne always fed people when they were around her. And when I think about her, I am not sure I ever have seen her eat. She was always the last in line, the last to sit down, but the first to serve and make sure everything was in order. And drove me crazy for weeks prior to any event.
Finally, just as the Lord healed the people that gathered around Him, so too did Anne. If it was not her soothing “Boston” accent that brought comfort to those whom she visited, taught, brought shopping or to doctor’s appointments, knitted for, then it was certainly, her smile that allowed you to see the Light of God shine through her life. It was by her presence that you were able to be healed by the love of Jesus.
Anne could see the bright side of a hurricane, the better side of a convict and the hope in the midst of a terminal illness. She was truly a piece of heaven here on earth. And I have to be honest and say, I tormented her mercilessly. Matter of fact our last conversation this past Wednesday, when I visited her in the hospital, was about whether all people went to heaven or not. She persisted and held firm that she could not believe that a merciful God would let anyone go to Hell. And this conversation is what prompted my article in this week’s bulletin. I told her that I was glad she was not the Director of Faith Formation any longer here at Saint Joseph because I would have had

Brendon’s Eagle project benefitted the Newton First Aid Squad and took over 180 man-hours to complete. His project included tearing down a dilapidated deck and
constructing and painting a new 6x16 foot deck on the side of the squad building.

On Sunday, June 23rd the NJ State Council
Columbiettes and Paterson Federation
Knights pulled a 80,000 pound tank in 9.38
seconds. From our Auxiliary the participants
were Patricia Keegan, Amy Keegan, Victoria
Bird, Jim Bird and Miriam Montagne.
The funds raised financially and materially support
the Wounded Warriors and ensure that their service
will not be forgotten.
