Beth El Welcomes Dr. Burton Visotzky“In every generation one is obligated to see his or herself as though he/she had participated in the Exodus from Egypt.”
Beth El is looking forward to welcoming Dr. Burton L. Visotzky, Appleman Professor of Midrash and Interreligious Studies at the Jewish Theological Seminary in New York, the weekend of March 20-22 as our Shabbat Scholar-in-Residence. His appearance in Omaha is expected to provide creative ways for us to augment our Passover observances. “Dr. Visotzky is an amazing teacher. I still remember his teachings about Pesach and specifically the Hagaddah as if they took place last week,” said Rabbi Steven Abraham. “I believe with Dr. Visotzky as our guide we will not only learn more about Pesach, but also how to make the story come alive at our own Seder table.”
Visotzky will offer a deeper understanding and appreciation for the Haggadah. As Rabbi Abraham explained, “Whenever a scholar comes to town, the hope should be to walk away with a nugget or two of learning, of meaning, of connection that was not there before. This weekend will be no exception. All who attend will walk away with a new found respect for our ancient texts, a new lens with which to look at Pesach, and some new ideas for their own Seder.”
Visotzky will lead and teach several sessions throughout the weekend, centered on our ongoing understanding of, and preparation for the Passover holiday. On Friday, March 20, he joins the congregation for Kabbalat Shabbat services at 6:00 pm, followed by a congregational Shabbat dinner at 7:00 pm.
The cost for Shabbat dinner is $12.50 for adult members, $15 for non-members; children age 7-12 are $7.50 for members and $10 for non-members. There is no charge for children 6 and under. Babysitting is available at no charge after dinner during Dr. Visotzky's talk. Reservations for dinner and babysitting can be made online at www.bethel-omaha.org.
Saturday morning services will include a D’var Torah by Dr. Visotzky with Kiddush lunch following services. He will also conduct a text study session at 7:00 pm, between mincha and ma’ariv services. Mincha will be held early this week, at 6:30 pm, to accommodate the study session.
The weekend concludes on March 22 at 11:00 am when Visotzky will be teaching as part of our Sunday Scholars Series.
Rabbi Visotzky serves as Director of the Milstein Center for Interreligious Dialogue and Director of the Louis Finkelstein Institute for Religious and Social Studies at the JTS, where he focuses on Muslim-Jewish-Christian dialogue. His work in this capacity included a groundbreaking meeting of Muslims, Christians and Jews sponsored by Saudi Arabia's King Abdullah in Madrid in 2008. He also participated in interfaith dialogue in Doha, where he was in the first group of Jews invited by the Emir of Qatar.
“Dr. Visotzky was a favorite teacher of both Shira and mine when we were students at the Jewish Theological Seminary,” said Rabbi Abraham. “Dr. Visotzky is a brilliant scholar who not only loves what he does, but loves his students. I don’t know of any professor at JTS who cared more about the success of his students than Dr. Visotzsky.”
Visotzky is active as a lecturer and scholar-in-residence throughout the United States, Europe and Israel. With journalist Bill Moyers, he developed the series, Genesis: A Living Conversation, serving as both a consultant and participant; he was also a consultant to Jeffrey Katzenberg of DreamWorks Studios for the 1998 film, The Prince of Egypt.
Rabbi Visotzky holds a master’s degree in education from Harvard University, and received his rabbinic ordination and Ph.D. from the Jewish Theological Seminary.
He is the author of ten books, including Reading the Book: Making the Bible a Timeless Text (1991) and The Genesis of Ethics (1996). His historical novel, A Delightful Compendium of Consolation, was published in 2008. Dr. Visotzky's most recent book, Sage Tales: Wisdom and Wonder from the Rabbis of the Talmud, came out in spring 2011.

The Significance of Jewish Musicby Hazzan Michael Krausman
I have often said, as I look out at the massive crowd that flocks to Shul on Kol Nidre evening, "If I was going to pick only one
night a year to come to synagogue services, I wouldn’t choose Kol Nidre night - I would come on the eve of Purim."
While it seems as though there can be no comparison between one of the most solemn and one of the most jubilant days of the year, there is a common thread between the two - the significance of Jewish music.
Both the plaintive supplications of Kol Nidre services and the raucous celebration of Purim rely on music to provide true meaning and impact. Indeed, the central element of each occasion is extremely dependent on musical interpretation - the Kol Nidre prayer on Yom Kippur and the reading of the Megillah (scroll of Esther) on Purim.
As an example of the diverse palate of emotions that our musical tradition is able to portray, by suddenly switching from the merry melodic Megillah cantillation to the lachrymose Trop of Lamentations, the joy of Esther's coronation is starkly contrasted with the trepidation engendered by Haman's evil plot. Similarly, prayers ranging from the emotionally wrought Kol Nidre to the breast-pounding beat of the confessional, to the heart rending Shema Koleinu, are expressed through a range of musical forms.
Whereas it may be difficult to compare the pageantry of Kol Nidre with the frivolity of Purim, and whereas it may be inappropriate to compare the new fashions that are displayed by the attendees at Yom Kippur Services with the crazy costumes that are worn on Purim, it is true that whether through the silly songs of Purim or through the solemn service of the Day of Atonement or through any circumstance or event, it is Jewish
music that we rely upon to express our deep feelings and emotions.
Of course, there is no better way to experience Jewish music than to be part of the creative process. Queen Esther was able to save the Jewish community by using her special talents to win over the King and spoil Haman’s wicked plan. Our synagogue choir provides a unique opportunity to use your own talents, to sing, learn and share music with your Beth El community. No particular musical or Judaic knowledge is needed - even the words we sing are transliterated into English letters. All that is required is a love or enjoyment of music and a commitment to attend a few rehearsals. Men’s Club Yellow Candle ProjectThe Yellow Candle program was created in 1981 by the Federation of Jewish Men’s Clubs to keep alive the memory of the Six
Million who perished in the Shoah. The Candle is modeled after a traditional Jewish memorial Yahrzeit candle that burns for 24 hours during periods of mourning and on the Yahrzeit anniversary of a family member.
The candle's yellow wax serves to remind us of the yellow arm band which Jews were forced to wear during the Nazi regime. A photo on the candle container shows young people visiting Auschwitz-Birkenau concentration camp. This reflects the importance of teaching our youth the lessons of the Holocaust and of remembering the Six Million.
In addition, the program logo is a yellow Magen David (Star of David) outlined with barbed wire, with the word "Jude" in the middle. This preserves the memory of the armband or cloth patch that Jews were forced to wear in the ghettos of Eastern Europe.
From mid-March through mid-April, our Beth El Men’s Club will have educational material about the Shoah on display and candles available in the community court and in the BESTT canteen area, so that congregants may take home a candle. So when you say Kaddish or Yizkor for a deceased loved one or remember the victims of the Holocaust, you will be able to light a yellow candle to remember those for whom no one is left to say Kaddish or Yizkor. At the time you take a candle, you will also have the opportunity to make a donation, consistent with the Jewish tradition of giving tzedakah in memory of a departed person at the time of their yahrzeit.
Learning by Building A Jewish CommunityBy Eadie Tsabari, Director of Congregational LearningBelieve it or not winter is waning and Aviv (spring) will be here soon. The Hebrew months of Adar and Nisan are arguably the most joyous months of the school year, filled with holidays and traditions galore.
Our halls have been very busy in the evenings, filled with USY and Kadima members on the telephone, soliciting booth sponsors and gearing up for our annual USY/Kadima Purim Carnival and fundraiser. Thanks to the hard work of all of these kids, we know that once again the Beth El Purim Carnival, Sunday March 8 at 11:30 am, will be an amazing success.
Our Kadimanicks are off to their annual Kadima Kinnus the following weekend, where they will celebrate Shabbat with other Kadimanicks from around the Midwest. This convention is the stepping stone to their experience in USY and just the beginning of many wonderful experiences that youth group can bring.
The traditions continue for our BESTT students in grades 3-4 with, “The 3rd-4th Grade Wedding,” Sunday, March 22 at 11:15 am. Come and see the bride walk down the aisle and the groom smash the glass. This is still one of the fondest memories of most of our BESTT students.
Fifteen of our students in grades 7-9 will culminate their Holocaust studies class with a trip to Chicago to visit the Skokie Holocaust Museum. We are so grateful to our supporter for the opportunity to take this adventure. We will likewise be visiting some of our BESTT alumni at Northwestern University for a campus visit.
With Pesach just around the corner, our students in grades 3-7 will celebrate at their annual BESTT seder. This is a chance for all to use what they have learned in class in an interactive and fun way, and hopefully bring some of that knowledge back to your seder at home.
Learning by building a Jewish community is what makes Beth El such a special place to be. Our kids are engaged, active and involved in the essence of our synagogue. During the months of Adar and Nisan we learn about how the people of Israel become strong communities who rely on one another. They experienced tragedy and joy, and learned how to celebrate together.
Our community at BESTT, Hebrew High and youth group, those who participate in camp, on class trips, celebrating holidays together or on a regular Shabbat morning, is strong and loving.
We are very proud of how we, too, have became a wonderful Jewish community.

A Great Time to Be with Familyby Joel Rich, President of the Board of TrusteesWe are now entering one of my favorite times of the Jewish calendar - a time for fun, a time for developing memories that will last, a time for special foods and a time to be with family.
Purim, with its fun and frivolity, is just upon us. Graggers, costumes, hamantashen and hearing the Megillah are all memories that will be with us and our children for years to come. The Purim carnival, with games for kids of all ages, shows our younger kids how much fun going to Beth El can be. Seeing our USYers lead an event for the entire congregation assures us that the future of Beth El will be in good hands. Many thanks to everyone who takes part, whether by attending, sponsoring a booth or participating in the raffle and silent auction. We appreciate your willingness to support our youth activities.
Next month we will all be celebrating Pesach, the Festival of Freedom! Passover is a holiday that many Jews celebrate in their homes. The Seders, starting the holiday, give everyone an opportunity to tell the story of the Exodus from Egypt. The Beth El congregational Seder is on the first night of Passover this year, Friday, April 3. We would love to have you join us.
Passover is also a time to experience foods that are special at this time of year. Matzah, matzah balls in chicken soup, charoset, maror, karpas and wine, coupled with spending time with family, allow us to remember the past years and create new memories for the younger members of our family.
