Michigan DNR Announces Partial Closure of North Central

State Trail in Cheboygan County

The closure is due to washouts of the trail bed caused by Wednesdayrsquos

excessive rainfall The closed trail segments are along Mullett Lake in

Cheboygan County

Michigan Department of Natural Resources

Michigan --(Ammolandcom)- The Department of Natural Resources

today announced that two segments of the North Central State Trail

(NCST) are temporarily closed

The closure is due to washouts of the trail bed caused by Wednesdayrsquos

excessive rainfall The closed trail segments are along Mullett Lake in

Cheboygan County between Cheboygan and Topinabee from Royal Oak

Beach Drive north to Liberty Point Drive and then south of Tryban Road

The Indian River Weather Station reported 148 inches of rainfall in five

hours on Wednesday DNR officials said that landowners near the NCST

remarked that they havenrsquot seen anything like this in over 30 years

The NCST is located on old railroad grade between Gaylord and

Mackinaw City and was improved with a new limestone surface in 2007

The water rose over the former grade in several locations but washed

out just two locations The majority of the compacted limestone trail

surface remained in place after the flood waters went down

Repairs will be completed by DNR staff and the trail will be reopened as

soon as possible In the meantime the DNR appreciates the publicrsquos

cooperation with respect to the barriers on the closed trail segments

Trail users are encouraged to use the NCST trail portions not affected by

the rain

DONIPHAN Neb --(Ammolandcom)- Sophomore Aaron Lafler of

Lincoln Pius shot a perfect 100 to take the individual crown in the 16-

yard targets of the senior high division at the 42nd Cornhusker

Trapshoot on Friday

Lafler 15 accomplished his feat despite gusting winds that came and

went He said timing was everything

ldquoI just got luckyrdquo he said ldquoIrsquove shot 100 straight before This

really isnrsquot as abnormal as you think but these arenrsquot the

greatest conditions either Yoursquove got to shoot quickerrdquo

Jacqueline Baude of Papillion-LaVista South won the girlsrsquo individual

title but she and fellow seniors Melissa Harnack Taylor Holzer Marisa

Braddock won their fourth straight girlsrsquo team title

Baude said her 96X100 in the 16s was a byproduct of

teamwork ldquoWersquove always had a mentality of team firstrdquo she

said ldquoWe just keep plugging alongrdquo

Itrsquos a good thing The Lady Titans No 1 team that also

included freshman Bailey Kustka needed to plug along ldquoWe

didnrsquot get off to the best start but closed out really wellrdquo

Baude said ldquoWe missed the first two or three birds out then

started to get used to the wind We did a lot better in the

second 50 (rocks) than the first 50rdquo

The team finished with a 432X500

The Cornhusker Trapshoot held at the Nebraska Trapshooting

Association (NTA) home grounds concluded this past Saturday with

senior high handicap competition and the presentation of the

Cornhusker Cup to the overall winner

There are 1216 shooters competing in the senior high division

The Cornhusker Trapshoot is hosted by the Nebraska Game and Parks

Commission and the NTA

DONIPHAN Neb --(Ammolandcom)- Cory Sorahan of Grand Island

had a painful introduction to shooting sports On the other hand she

was just a fourth-grader and the shotgun she shot packed a wallop

From that experience at Walnut Junior Highrsquos outdoor field

day Sorahan took to shooting sports despite her first

impression ldquoI was done it hurt so badlyrdquo she said of her first

experience ldquoBut I knew it wouldnrsquot be like that all the timerdquo

ldquoShe told me she wanted to shoot those orange thingsrdquo said

her aunt Michelle Sorahan with whom Cory lives ldquoI said

lsquoYou mean blue rocksrsquo She said lsquoNo they are orangersquo ldquo

Now the 15-year-old sophomore is a veteran in her fifth season

competing at the 42nd Cornhusker Trapshoot On Friday she shot an

87X100 at 16-yard targets during competition in the senior high division

Her squad on Friday included four boys She is used to competing with

boys

ldquoShe irritates the boysrdquo said Jack Wiese a Ducks Unlimited

member from Grand Island and the person who taught

Sorahan how to shoot

Wiese taught Sorahan how to shoot with the discipline he

learned as a decorated member of the US Marine Corps

ldquoShe has natural talentrdquo he said ldquoShe doesnrsquot have any bad

habits She just doesnrsquot missrdquo

Sorahan didnrsquot miss much last year when she finished second in the 20-

21 yard individual handicap division at the Cornhusker Trapshoot

On that night back in the fourth grade Sorahan won in a drawing a

membership into the Ducks Unlimited Green Wings program for youth

shooters Thatrsquos when Wiese took her under his wing

Sorahan didnrsquot care that there were few girls her age shooting ldquoItrsquos

something a lot of girls didnrsquot do at the time so it was something like the

boys I could dordquo she said

ldquoItrsquos not about winning itrsquos about shooting against people

and making them think they have to be better than yourdquo

Sorahan has a lifetime of trapshooting to look forward to now

ldquoThatrsquos another reason that I like to shoot traprdquo she said

ldquoYou canrsquot play basketball your whole life but you can shoot

your whole liferdquo

And at least two more Cornhusker Trapshoots

ldquoBoys and girls of all ages are taking up shooting sports as a

hobbyrdquo Shoot Director Terry Brentzel said ldquoIt is getting

easier to do that too because there are so many

opportunities available to get started There are hunter

education courses live-fire programs school programs and

mentored hunts available as well as a number of excellent

shooting rangesrdquo

Georgetown TX --(Ammolandcom)- Veteran Outdoors (VO) a Texas-

based nonprofit established to honor wounded veterans airs the second

season of their self-titled television series May 2 on The Sportsman

Channel (TSC)

The seasonrsquos 14 original episodes highlight thrilling outdoor adventures

while profiling stories of veterans injured in combat during recent wars

The organization founded in 2006 began presenting recreational

opportunities to veterans to assist in their mental and physical wellbeing

Wes Higgins a US Army veteran and co-founder of VO said the idea

came from the usual talk he and his soldiers shared about better times

upon their return home

ldquoWe all made promises to get together when we made it

backrdquo said Higgins rdquoSome guys got hurt and a few didnrsquot

make it so we just wanted to honor them by continuing the

freedoms we fought forrdquo

Higgins and Cody Hirt another co-founder of VO witnessed the effects

of the outings and began finding more injured veterans to benefit The

inherent qualities of outdoor recreation and the camaraderie found on

the first trips proved to be the catalyst for the next 5 years

The series was picked up by TSC in early 2011 for summer programming

beginning Monday night 730 CST The seriesrsquo diversity as an outdoors

show and its patriotic appeal give it the potential to relate to a large

viewing audience

ldquoThese adventures are tailored to individual veterans and

their familiesrdquo said Hirt ldquoFriends and family submit them

and tell us what the veteranrsquos dream adventure is and we

work to make it happen We also provide a platform for them

to tell their stories in their own wordsrdquo

Veterans are fully outfitted by donations and sponsorships by generous

individuals companies and organizations Selected guests are set up to

be surprised at an unassuming time baseball games family gatherings

and school Christmas pageants to name a few

and its new $100000 challenge grant that encourages shooting sports

Boyscouts Of America

BSA Councils applying for a grant must specifically earmark funds for

shooting sports programs and provide matching funds at least equal to

the grant request NSSF will provide funding to the first 50 qualifying

applicants up to a maximum of $2000 in matching support

Councils must use awarded funds toward the purchase of equipment and

supplies for their shooting sports activities from an NSSF member

retailer a list of which is available at wwwnssforgretailersfind

Examples of qualifying purchases are ammunition eye and ear

protection firearms targets and shooting vests

29 2011 Governor Brewer vetoed SB 1201 the AzCDL-requested bill

that would have required state or local government offices wanting to

ban firearms to provide security measures that ensure no one is capable

of bringing in a firearm without detection

The Governorrsquos veto means that for at least another year all a state or

local government office needs to do to disarm the law-abiding is to put

up a ldquoNo Firearmsrdquo sign Meanwhile armed criminals can continue to

enter these facilities undetected

We believe the governorrsquos recent vetoes of SB 1201 and SB 1467 (Campus

Carry) have more to do with politics than principles

While we are disappointed we are not defeated Politicians come and go

but AzCDL keeps growing The passage of Arizonarsquos historic

Constitutional Carry law was achieved by applying steady pressure

during the terms of several Legislators and two Governors Next year is

an election year Wersquore looking forward to it

On the plus side the Governor signed the following pro-rights bills that

AzCDL requested andor supported

bull HB 2006 the AzCDL-requested bill that repeals ARS 17-305

prohibiting the carrying of firearms in game refuges was signed by

the Governor on April 27 2011

bull HB 2146 the AzCDL-requested bill that removes the burden from

the Department of Public Safety (DPS) to approve CCW training

courses training organizations and instructors was signed by the

Governor on April 13 2011

bull HB 2645 formerly an AzCDL requested bill dealing with the

disposition of forfeited weapons This bill was replaced by a ldquostrike-

everythingrdquo amendment The new language modifies the law

related to the restoration of the right to possess a firearm by

mentally ill persons HB 2645 was signed by the Governor on April

28 2011

bull SB 1334 a bill that prohibits political subdivisions from enacting

any ordinance or regulation limiting the area of a lawful hunting

event during open season was signed by the Governor on April 29

2011

bull SB 1469 a bill that strengthens current self-defense statutes by

broadening the allowance for the use of force and provides greater

protection for those forced to defend themselves from an attacker

was signed by the Governor on April 29 2011

bull SB 1610 a bill that establishes the Colt Single Action Army

Revolver as the state firearm was signed by the Governor on April

28 2011

The general effective date of legislation signed by the Governor is July

20 2011

UK Gun Owner Fired Over Gun in Car

Washington DC --(Ammolandcom)- The University of Kentucky has

fired a graduate student and former anesthesia technician Michael

Mitchell for keeping a gun in his car a mile away from the university

hospital where he was employed

The university then proceeded to try to deny Mitchell unemployment

compensation by claiming unsuccessfully that he was fired for

misconduct A hearing officer found against the University of Kentucky

and in favor of Mitchell

All this despite the fact that Mitchell had a Kentucky concealed carry

permit believed he had fully complied with Kentucky law governing

concealed carry and therefore cooperated fully with police and

university authorities

And finally Kentucky Revised Statutes sec 27020 seems to prevent a

state institution like the University of Kentucky from interfering with the

Second Amendment rights of a concealed carry permit holder That

section holds in part that ldquo[n]o person or organization public or

private shall prohibitrdquo a concealed carry permit holder from

transporting a firearm in his vehicle in accordance with law

Sohelliphellip Whatrsquos up with the University of Kentucky

The answer is that itrsquos probably not much different from many Left-

leaning universities After all Virginia Tech fought hard and successfully

to keep guns off its campus ndash nearly a year to the day before a crazed

gunman killed 31 people on that campus

Mitchell appealed a ruling from Fayette Circuit Court Judge Pamela

Goodwine who dismissed his suit against the University of Kentucky

because its anti-gun animus ldquowas not a violation of public policyrdquo

Judge Goodwine claims to have read US Supreme Court language

concerning ldquoexceptionsrdquo to the Second Amendment This language is

called ldquodictumrdquo and is non-binding

But Goodwine seems to have missed the point of the Supreme Courtrsquos

decision in Heller Americans have a constitutional right to use firearms

to defend themselves

Kentucky concealed carry permit holders arenrsquot a problem in America

Rather the problem is liberal anti-gun institutions who want to disarm

their students and employees -ndash at the same time that they are

adamantly incompetent in their efforts to protect persons on their

property

Mitchell appealed directly to the Kentucky Supreme Court which voted

5-2 to hear his appeal A win in this lawsuit will end the illegal and

discriminatory practice on the university

Antler Hunters Should Note Noon Opening on Wildlife Management

MALTA Mont --(Ammolandcom)- Antler hunters planning to head

to west-central Montana Wildlife Management Areas (WMAs) on

opening day this spring should note a new opening time of noon

There are three wildlife management areas in west-central Montana that

are antler-hunting destinations with regularly scheduled openings on

May 15 Blackfoot-Clearwater near Seeley Lake Threemile in the

Bitterroot Valley and Spotted Dog near Garrison

Some of these WMAs have traditionally opened at midnight on May 15

but the FWP Commission recently enacted regulations that require all

Montana WMAs with winter closures to reopen at noon to help with

consistency and public safety

noted that even after these areas open some roads are likely to remain

closed until muddy road conditions improve

Some Montana WMAs are open year-round but many are closed during

the winter months to protect wildlife from disturbance on their winter

range In addition to these three antler-hunting destinations several

other wildlife management areas in west-central Montana and many

others across the state do not open until noon on May 15

said ldquoItrsquos like deacutejagrave vu all over againrdquo Kentuckyrsquos month-long deluge of

severe thunderstorms and torrential rains left its final mark on the 2011

DPMS-Bushnell Blue Ridge Mountain 3-Gun at the Rockcastle Shooting

Center here Sunday as the final two stages were scrapped due to

inclement weather

While rain had soaked the course in the days and weeks prior to the

event the weather broke for two spectacular shooting days on Friday and

Saturday before the final downpour Sunday morning

Last yearrsquos Blue Ridge Mountain was also shortened due to inclement

weather to the point no winners were declared

However the entire field had shot at least eight of ten stages this year so

scores were normalized and it was US AMUrsquos Daniel Horner that

emerged for the overall and Tactical Optics victory For Horner the win

comes on the heels of a 2nd place finish at Superstition The Blue Ridge

win a nearly 90-point victory over eight stages emphatically stated that

Horner (7705103) is the most dominating shooter in the sport on

natural terrain courses of fire and possibly any type of stage design

Remingtonrsquos Robby Johnson (6839144) took second in Tactical Optics

followed by Noveskersquos Rob Romero (6735116) Rustin Bernskoetter

(6629975) and Caspianrsquos Bruce Piatt (6471356)

In Open Clint Upchurch continued his remarkable run winning his

fourth consecutive division title by holding off a strong performance by

SureFirersquos Mike Voigt (7428257) While Voigt won four of the eight

stages a slip on stage tworsquos long-range rifle steel arguably decided the

match as Upchurchrsquos lead on stage two mirrored his overall point lead

over Voigt

DPMSrsquo James Darst (7011839) narrowly edged out Don Bednorz

(6944393) while Team Rockcastlersquos Tony Holmes (6754203) took fifth

In Tactical Irons Kelly Neal (7617459) picked up his 2nd consecutive

division win by a comfortable margin James Casanova (702677) placed

second followed by Brian McKibben (6936945) Hornadyrsquos Jeff

Cramblit (6904002) and Spike Tacticalrsquos Cameron Thompson

(5969331)

Heavy Metal saw an interesting battle as SureFirersquos Barry Dueck

(7823063) jumped divisions from Heavy Metal Optics (not recognized

at Blue Ridge) and cruised to his first division win since last Fallrsquos Ozark

match Upstart Bryan Ray (6930936) placed second followed by Joe

Satterfield (663663) Maurice Griffin (6498307) and JJ Johnson

(6149773)

Hornerrsquos win will vault the Army shooter up the 3GN leader board from

17th place all the way to 2nd behind Upchurch who remains the only

competitor with a perfect score of 300 However with Hornerrsquos second

win it seems only a matter of time before he joins Upchurch atop the

3GN standings

The next event on the 2011 FNH USA 3-Gun Nation Tour Presented by

SureFire is the MGM Ironman June 5-11 in Parma Idaho A 3GN

Shoot-Off and 3GN Points event Ironman will be the 5th of 10 3GN Tour

events this season

veterans to ldquocelebraterdquo these women and the sacrifices theyrsquove made for

our country

Vickie Gardner co-owner of Alpen Optics says ldquoI know how

much being in the outdoors hunting and fishing means to me

and I knew that our returning female veterans would benefit

from these activities as well After spending time with the

three special women during their first turkey hunting

experience I can say without a doubt that the hunt was

healing and uplifting for not only them but everyone

involvedrdquo

Gardner says she wants to make the media aware of this Celebration

Hunt and solicits the mediarsquos help in raising awareness for female

veterans especially injured female vets and how hunting can provide a

level of healing for them

Veterans Leslie Smith Kate Calahan and Cheri Arnold all suffer from

debilitating injuries but say that hunting and spending time in the

outdoors provides them with a sense of empowerment and self-

assurance that strengthens their spirits

The participants enjoyed two days of hunting and fishing on the

beautiful 8000-acre property owned by Mississippi Commissioner Billy

DeViney and two of the ladies ended up taking a bird

After harvesting her first ever turkey Smith an amputee

whorsquos partially blind said ldquoHunting and taking this bird

made me feel confident and powerful I feel if I can do this I

can do anythingrdquo

Calahan whorsquos partially paralyzed insisted on going after her gobbler on

foot She even climbed what she claimed were ldquotwo of the biggest hills in

Mississippirdquo to get the job done

ldquoI began hunting a couple of years ago with the Paralyzed

Veterans of America Organizationrdquo Calahan says ldquoI realized

through hunting that I donrsquot have to be stuck inside I can do

things Itrsquos a great feelingrdquo

Arnold an incomplete quadriplegic says hunting has opened

up another world for her Although she didnrsquot get a bird

Arnold says ldquoI was thrilled to witness Leslie and Katersquos

excitement at getting a birdrdquo

Arnold was the only lady to catch a fish during their afternoon fishing

trips for bream and bass

Gardner says ldquoThe 2nd Celebration Hunt was a life changing

experience for all of us I look forward to future hunts and to

meeting more remarkable women whorsquove given so much of

themselves to protect the freedom that we often take for

grantedrdquo

on Bloombergrsquos group Mayors Against Illegal Guns

They claim a membership of 593 mayors Of these 399 (over 67) are

in only four states ndash New Jersey (40) New York (108) Ohio (71) and

Pennsylvania(180) If you throw in California (21) and Florida (36) they

account for 456 (over 76) of their alleged membership

There are approximately 8291 mayors nationally of localities with over

30000 citizens Even disregarding the fact that a fair number of

Bloombergrsquos group are not even included in that count due to small

constituencies this means that fewer than 72 of the nationrsquos mayors

agree with his goals and methods enough to allow themselves to be

counted among his supporters

The vast majority of states 37 or 74 (see table below) could produce

won a shootout to capture the Cornhusker Cup on Saturday at the 42st

Annual Cornhusker Trapshoot

Newlun who shot 89X100 to win the 24-25 Yard handicap finished with

a 186X200 two-day score to tie Republican Valley 4-Hrsquos Blake

Brumbaugh and head to a shootout Nick Yardley of Gordon-Rushville

was three points back in third place

Jacqueline Baude of Papillion-LaVista South was the high overall girl

with a 179X200 She shot an 83X100 Saturday for second place in the

girlsrsquo handicap She also helped her team win the high overall girls team

crown Melissa Harnack Taylor Holzer Bailey Kustka and Marisa

Braddock helped the Lady Titans shoot an 806X1000 to win their fourth

straight crown

Omaha Creighton Prep Blue (Mitch Cassels Ryan Glow James Vasko

Nick Zuerlein Mark Stockdale) and Republican Valley 4-H (Eli Van

Boening Shane Kohmetscher Trenton Jordening Brumbaugh Kelly

Faimon) won the high overall team and high overall 4-H team titles

respectively

Lincoln Pius shot a perfect 100 to take the individual crown in the 16-

yard targets of the senior high division at the 42nd Cornhusker

Trapshoot on Friday

Lafler 15 accomplished his feat despite gusting winds that came and

went He said timing was everything

ldquoI just got luckyrdquo he said ldquoIrsquove shot 100 straight before This

really isnrsquot as abnormal as you think but these arenrsquot the

greatest conditions either Yoursquove got to shoot quickerrdquo

Jacqueline Baude of Papillion-LaVista South won the girlsrsquo individual

title but she and fellow seniors Melissa Harnack Taylor Holzer Marisa

Braddock won their fourth straight girlsrsquo team title

Baude said her 96X100 in the 16s was a byproduct of

teamwork ldquoWersquove always had a mentality of team firstrdquo she

said ldquoWe just keep plugging alongrdquo

Itrsquos a good thing The Lady Titans No 1 team that also

included freshman Bailey Kustka needed to plug along ldquoWe

didnrsquot get off to the best start but closed out really wellrdquo

Baude said ldquoWe missed the first two or three birds out then

started to get used to the wind We did a lot better in the

second 50 (rocks) than the first 50rdquo

The team finished with a 432X500

The Cornhusker Trapshoot held at the Nebraska Trapshooting

Association (NTA) home grounds concluded this past Saturday with

senior high handicap competition and the presentation of the

Cornhusker Cup to the overall winner

There are 1216 shooters competing in the senior high division

The Cornhusker Trapshoot is hosted by the Nebraska Game and Parks
