Cape Fear Grady Club Cruises to Beaufort, NC; Visits Wild Ponies of Shackleford BanksWhen Atlantic Marine, Wrightsville Beach, NC, plans a weekend cruise for its Cape Fear Grady Club, every detail is covered for members’ confidence and comfort. Atlantic’s Jordan Davis even prepared a mile marker-by-mile marker video, highlighting in advance the four-and-a-half-hour ride to Beaufort, NC, via the Intracoastal Waterway, covering tides, bridge clear-ances and drawbridge protocol, chan-nel marks and electronics navigation.

Nineteen Gradys with about 50 peo-ple made the voyage to the Beaufort town docks last September, checked into the Inlet Inn, and were hosted at a Friday night reception. Saturday’s spe-cial highlight was a visit to Cape Lookout’s Shackleford Banks, home to famed feral horses whose ancestors are believed to be shipwrecked Spanish mustangs from the late 1500s. These Back Sound shallow waters were per-fect for anchoring and hopping off to enjoy sunning on the sand.

Andy Sees, and wife Kay, own a Fisherman 216. They were longtime sailors; the Grady is their first power-boat. “This was our second trip with the club,” he said. “The first was in August, to Southport, the day after we took delivery. As new powerboaters, this is a good way to learn the area waters. It’s opened up a new world of boating for us, and took away initial fears we may have had. We now have tracks on our GPS, and some 30-40 hours on the engine.” And, he adds, “Kay has a smile on her face from the time she gets on the boat.”

Fisherman 236 owners Jeff and Linda Fisherman 236 owners Jeff and Linda Fisherman 236Stewart had been boating for many years in smaller boats. Linda wanted to do more longer distance cruising, and Jeff liked the idea of saltwater capabili-ty out of their home waters of Topsail Beach, NC, though much of his fishing is done in the estuaries. The 236 fits 236 fits 236the bill. “The Beaufort trip was delight-ful for both of us,” said Jeff. “Jordan and his wife, Stephanie, did a superla-tive job planning the trip and manag-ing the weekend. We met lots of nice folks, and this gave us experience with the electronics.”

Krystal Webb and husband, Bill, made the trip on their Freedom 275from their homeport of Carolina Beach. Since buying their Grady in April, they’ve gone on the club's Southport cruise and a day trip to Bald Head Island. “If it weren’t for the club

organizing these events I don’t know that we would have traveled that far ourselves,” Krystal commented. “These experiences have shown us what we are capable of doing. From what we learned about things like bridges, and renting transient dock space, we can do trips on our own now. We appreci-ate the club helping us get outside our comfort zone.”

Andy reports that everyone enjoyed anchoring at Shackelford Banks. “They say not to disturb those horses…but those horses get pretty friendly and are hard to avoid!”

TAMPA BAY GRADY-WHITE CLUB members made their annual fall trip to Boca Grande Island.

The Hartwell family (Don and Tonya, with sons Spencer, Logan, and Ayden) cruised along the Cleveland waterfront on the Cuyahoga River with the LAKE ERIE GRADY-WHITE CLUB.

A dinner cookout was one of the features of the OBX GRADY-WHITE CLUB Ocracoke Island weekend.

The Chesapeake Bay Grady-White Clubsaw 15 boats and 60 members and guests present for their 2017 Grady Palooza at Knapps Narrows, MD, coming in from Delaware, Maryland, New Jersey, Pennsylvania and Virginia–plus Grady factory reps from North Carolina. Fishing was on the agenda for some on Friday and Saturday mornings, with pool time for others in

the bright sunshine and warm August weather. Saturday dinner was provided by the club and catered by the Marker 5 restaurant, with music and dancing late into the night. Fun to put on those danc-ing shoes! Special thanks to Andy Kerhulas, John Byrnes, Brian Torrance, and Robert Warren for coordination.

Check out the club Facebook page for a drone video of the event by Curtis and Jackie Hampshire. Tri-State Marine, Deale, MD, sponsors this group.

The Lake Erie Grady-White Club saw high 80s and a flat Lake Erie on September 23 for their 2017 Perch Tournament. Fifty-seven attendees and

11 teams fought for bragging rights. This year’s champion, Jason Brooks, broke the long-standing club record set in 2006 by two inches, checking in five perch measur-ing 63.375 inches. In addition to the fierce fishing competition, the group enjoyed a super prime rib dinner and a 50/50 Huron Food Bank/Club sports raffle. Earlier in the month, a club fleet enjoyed a morning Cuyahoga River cruise past the Cleveland waterfront, then a Thunderbirds air show,

rounded out by dinner at the Edgewater Yacht Club. South Shore Marine, Huron, OH, sponsors this club.

The Northwest Grady-White Club got together for the winter season Dungeness Crab Rodeo in Langley, WA. Sun, rain, wind, waves–the participants were treated to a full range of weather and great perfor-mance from their boats. Reed Dow had the catching machine, with over 37 critters in his pots. All the Dungeness were given a hot bath and served up with all the trimmings for the enjoyment of all. Jacobsen’s Marine, Edmonds, WA, sponsors this club.

The OBX Grady-White Club enjoyed its first multi-day trip August 25-27, to Ocracoke Island. This marks the third adventure for the group this year. The group departed from the Manteo, NC, waterfront on a Friday morning, and made the three-hour crossing with ease. Once on the island, the group enjoyed conversations on the dock, exploring the island, sharing drinks at SMacNally’s waterfront bar, and a club cookout on Saturday night. This club is sponsored by Manteo Marine, Manteo, NC, and Park Boat Company, Washington, NC.

Nineteen members and guests of the Tampa Bay Grady-White Club headed to Boca Grande Island late October, determined to enjoy this annual fall trip despite Tropical Storm Phillippe being offshore. Saturday morning, boats took off for Cabbage Key for a “cheeseburger in paradise” and other tasty choices. Sunday was sports day watching football, NASCAR and baseball, plus taking a peek in golf carts at the nasty seas of the Gulf. Despite the raw weather, fun was had by all! Folks returned on Monday inside the Intracoastal, each family supplied with a fabulous Grady Gear insulated bag. Quality Boats of Clearwater, FL, sponsors this club.

Five-Year-Old’s Birthday Weekend a WinnerBryson Ross won the Kids’ Division in the Northwest Grady-White Club’s Ling Cod Derby, held out of Roche Harbor, WA, last spring. Son of Jacobsen’s Marine principal Tom Ross, Bryson celebrated his fifth birthday that weekend. We asked him about the tournament, and about catching his winning fish.

Q. Bryson, it sounds like you had a very special fifth birthday weekend with your Dad and Granddad, riding to Roche Harbor from Edmonds in the family Seafarer 228 for the Grady club’s rendezvous and fishing derby. The trip over was very windy?

A. The waves were really big, but after a while I fell asleep in the cabin. That’s my favorite spot when we cruise.

Q. Had you gone out fishing before that weekend?

A. I go fishing with my Dad and Papa all the time. One time Papa had me eat one of the bait fish! I like reeling in the rod when my Dad hands it to me, but what I like most is hitting the fish on the head with a stick.(Note: Administering a quick coup de grace to the head is considered a humane way to stun a salmon.)

Q. Tell us about derby day, when you caught your first ling cod. What was it like?

A. My Dad got us up really early, and we went for doughnuts. We went for a boat ride and went to my dad’s secret spot by some rocks. Papa caught the most fish and let me reel a few in. After a while, I got my fish. It was heavy and the rod shook a lot. It was fun! The fish was 26 inches long and about six pounds.

Q. Were you excited when you won the Kids’ Division?

A. I was surprised I won the kayaking trip. My Dad still needs to take me! I had a lot of fun going up front and winning.

Q. What would you tell someone if they asked you about what it is like to ride and fish on a Grady-White boat?

A. I’d tell them to go see my Dad. He sells them and is really good at it and he is the best fisherman–even better than Papa!
