CORONAVIRUS

Archdiocese of New York The policies delineated herein supersede and replace all other norms issued March 15, 2020 under my heading regarding the celebration of the sacraments and rites of the Church. 1. Baptisms administered by the ordinary minister of the sacrament within the parish setting are to be deferred, except in case of emergency. In these extreme instances, the faithful should contact a priest immediately. 2. Funeral Masses or services in the church or funeral home will no longer be conducted until further notice. Lim-iting the funerals to ten people has proven not to be feasible and caused problems for many priests. Burial prayers may be said in an open air setting in a cemetery, as long as proper distancing of the ten people allowed by state regulation is maintained. They may not be held in a mortu-ary chapel. The family is to be assured that a memorial Mass will be offered as soon as possible after restrictions are lifted. 3. Weddings are not allowed, unless absolutely neces-sary. If a wedding must take place for some serious reason, only the bride, groom, two witnesses and the officiant may be present, all maintaining the proper physical distance. Permission to celebrate a wedding must be obtained from the office of the vicar general. 4. Individual confession may be offered upon request, as long as hygiene and physical distancing requirements are observed (i.e., a barrier between the penitent and the priest, such as a grille and cloth). The use of Chapter II and Chap-ter III of the Rite of Penance is not permitted as this, by necessity, requires the gathering of people in our churches.

5. Holy Communion may be administered as viaticum only. The minister of communion must observe the safety protocols dictated by the civil authorities for the prevention of the spread of infection. Masses in convents will no longer be celebrated. The pastor or parochial vicar may consecrate a sufficient supply of hosts for the chapel tabernacle. One of the sisters may be mandated as an Ex-traordinary Minister of Holy Communion. A proper ritual will be followed for the distribution of the Eucharist. 6. If a pastor chooses to keep the parish church open for prayer: • Definite hours must be announced. • No public ceremonies such as the Mass or group devo-tions may take place so as to prevent any assembling of people. • Exposition may take place, but there is to be no Benedic-tion or group devotions. 7. Parishes should suspend all office activity.

A Prayer for Per-sons Suffering from the Corona-virus

You shall not fear the terror of the night nor the arrow that flies by day, nor the pestilence that roams in darkness, nor the plague that ravages at noon. Ps 91:5-6

Merciful God, hear our fervent prayer for all who suffer from the coronavirus. May those who are infected receive the proper treatment and the comfort of your healing presence. May their caregivers, families and neighbors be shielded from the onslaught of the virus. Give solace to those who grieve the loss of loved ones. Protect and guide those who strive to find a cure, that their work may conquer the disease and restore com-munities to wholeness and health. Help us to rise above fear. We ask all this through the in-tercession of Our Lady of Lourdes, and in the name of your Son, Jesus, and the Holy Spirit, now and forever. Amen.

~PASTOR’S NOTES~

April 12, 2020

On behalf of the clergy and staff of St. Columbanus Parish, we extend to everyone a very Happy Easter. At Mass on Easter, in place of the Creed, we renew our Baptismal Promises and reject Satan and profess our be-lief in the one true Godhead, Father, Son and Holy Spirit; and the One, Holy Catholic, and Apostolic Church founded by Jesus. This year in particular, we can surely in a pro-found sense feel what the Apostles and follow-ers of Jesus felt immediately after Jesus died. Full of fear and disappointment, unsure of the future, and trying to avoid the enemy assailing us (in this case the virus), we need to have faith in our Lord. We need to have hope that as he fulfilled His promise to rebuild the temple of His body after three days, so He will restore our lives and the life of His Body, the Church, to an even greater faithfulness and devotion. We are in the bitter throes of the passion with our Lord, but we know that the Light of the World is about to dawn again to a new life that we can only share if we in faith, hope and love, unite ourselves to His Good Friday while awaiting His glorious resurrection. Easter, the resurrection from the dead of Jesus (meaning “Savior”) Christ (“Anointed One”), who is true God and true man, is the greatest of all Christian mysteries. What love, pure and completely self-giving, has Jesus shown us. We would never dream on our own that the

Almighty and eternal God would ever become man and undergo the most vile and painful death. Yet He would do so and rise three days later to conquer sin and death. When we are tempted by mis-

fortune and suffering, may we remember that it will lead to everlasting joy, for when we share in the suffering of Christ we will also share in His glorious resurrection. May our lives reflect our faith, especially by a deep desire to be able to attend Mass (the re-presentation of Christ’s Saving Paschal Sacrifice) on every Sunday, and may we always keep in our hearts the joy that, “Christ is Risen, Alleluia…He is risen indeed, Alleluia!” In Jesus and Mary, Fr. Frank Samoylo
