construction web cameras! -Some Disc Golf Course holes will have to be closed. Check the ASI Recreation website for updates and

any alternates. -Please be alert for your own safety when around the construction site and follow any directions given re-garding closures and roadway inter-

ruptions. -Watch for announcements of other significant milestones like “Topping Out” and “Grand Opening” and on-

going updates on the web!

As you can tell, there are a bunch of green fences near Chavez Stairs. If you were wondering why they were there, then we have that answered

for you!

With construction of the University Student Union about to begin, the green fences were put in place for construction purposes. Along with that, closure of the Chavez Stairs will occur in mid-February to allow trenching to tie the campus utility lines at Science Hall 2. Alternative access from Chavez Circle to Forum Level includes the elevators at the Parking Structure (to the bridge at the top) and stairwell at Science Hall 2. The path east of Chavez Stairs will be kept open whenever it is safe to do so, but some of the work may

require it to be closed as well.

There will be a groundbreaking

ceremony on February 23rd, 2012 during U-Hour. There will be food,

drinks, and information at the

University Student Union. Make sure to check it out and get excited for

YOUR student union Cougars!

Here is some other information concerning the construction of the University Student Union, set to open

in January 2014:

-Access to the Interpretive Gardens

will be from the Library side

-Transit Center will be closed for the duration of construction (February

2012-October 2013)

-Fencing will limit access to the grass

area on the Forum Plaza

-Work on the site will normally occur

between 7:00a.m. and 3:30p.m.

-There may be some days when work

will begin early to avoid traffic

congestion, such as when concrete is being poured and many large trucks

have to come on to campus.

Whenever possible, you will be

notified in advance of these dates.

ASI ELECTIONS: RUN NOW! Spring semester brings along opportunities for academic redemption, new affiliations with

student organizations, and the promise of impending summer. But before the semester really kicks off,

ASI will be in the thick of an election season. Running for the Board of Directors enables students

to see what goes on behind the scenes as far as student and administration, or faculty, relationships are concerned. Being a member of the ASI Board of Directors is a platform to be a representative to whatever community or communities you come from, and an incredible way to immerse one’s self in

student government and student advocacy. Available positions are: President, Vice President of Operations, Vice President of Marketing, Vice President of Finance,

The Civility Campaign kicked off at CSUSM during the fall of 2011. It is led by the office of the Dean of Students and reflects the community values of CSUSM. These values of respect, dignity, free flow of ideas, care, and support are aimed to create a safe and secure community for CSUSM. The CSUSM Civility definition is, “Conducting oneself with care, respect, and empathy

while acknowledging the culture and humanity of others.” Any student, faculty, or staff member can nominate another student, faculty, or staff member as a Civility ICON (Initiating Civil Opportunities Now). Each nominee will be recognized as a Civility Champion. At the end of each month, the Civility committee will review all the nominations to identify the Civility ICON of the

month. The Civility ICON will have their picture displayed on the Civility Campaign website and receive a multicolored shirt and Civility hat. The first Civility Champion nominated was Kristina Fiscus. Other CSUSM members who have been recognized are Donna San Miguel and Jennifer Lynch. March for March

On March 5, 2012 the students of the CSU System will be joining their peers from all 23 CSU Campuses in a March for Higher Education in Sacramento at the state capital. The march comes in a time when the current Governor of California’s proposed $300 million cut would bring the cuts to higher education to $1.025 billion in just the last two fiscal years. That cut translates into tuition increases for all students of the CSU, or in another

Welcome back to the spring semes-ter! Campus Rec-reation is another organization of ASI and we have a wide variety of physical activities for all interests! Our upcoming Intramu-rals are Basketball, Co-ed Soccer and

Co-ed Dodge ball! This is a fun way to play your favorite sports with your

friends and meet new people. For the month of February and March we are offering K1 Go Karts, Indoor Rock Climbing, Ski-Snowboard trip to Big Bear, and our annual Outdoor Spring Break week! The prices are unbeatable and we have limited

spots so come by and sign up! Don’t forget we also have a selection of fitness classes that are FREE for students so come by and check out the class that is right for you. We brought back hip-hop this semester as well as yoga, turbo kick, zumba, and

more. We also have sports clubs which is a more competitive level than our intramurals where you can compete with schools all over Southern California. We hope you can fit us in your schedule and get to know our organization as we would love to
