Audience Profile – Genre: Songwriter/IndieTarget Audience:

Gender and Age (Hartley’s 7 Subjectivities) and whyThe appeal of my singer/songwriter/indie magazine will mainly be aimed at an audience of age around 15-40, due to the complex meaning behind lyrics of the genre’s music. The meaning behind most lyrics in the genre, may require education in the appreciation of modern literature and poetry, to gain a full understanding of the songs. I will aim to make my magazine as gender neutral as possible to have a broader appeal, to increase the readership of the magazine., therefore increasing the profits. The readership of my magazine may fall into the British, white ethnic category, due to the lack of cultural appeal, as the magazine will mainly operate on a national scale. Socio-Economic Needs and why:My magazine will fall into the ABC1 region of the socio-economic needs chart mainly due to the formality and price of the product. I would like to make my product more appealing to this category, as I would like to make my magazine as formal and as simple as possible, to convey the material as efficiently as possible. I also believe there is a gap in the market for a formal magazine that doesn't rely heavily on stereotypical magazine conventions. In addition to this, statistically the upper category/class has a larger income, which means there will be increased profits for the magazine company , if the magazine successfully appeals to the upper class. However, depending on the potential of the magazine I may eventually release the magazine for free either digitally or physically like the new NME Magazine. The magazine will then be popular enough to be successfully funded by advertising companies, whilst still making a considerable profit.

Katz’ Uses & Gratifications Theory and Maslow’s Hierarchy of needsIn my articles I would like to focus on modern musical topics, whilst also introducing the reader to new artists and upcoming events/gigs. Furthermore, I aim to comment on current artist affairs and music charts to inform the reader and keep them up to date on the music industry. Although many singer/songwriter artists may not currently be famous, I would like to expose the real lives of the artists and not how they are sometimes negatively presented in the media By doing so I can create a more realistic view of the music industry, to build a better ‘personal relationship’ (Katz) with the actual music itself and to divert (Katz) the reader in the form of stories that aim to make the reader feel passionate towards the subject. The reader can then forget about their own life whilst they are diverted by the content of the magazine, to make them feel empathy towards current issues and affairs as imparted in Katz’ Uses and gratifications theory. The reader may also have an interest in bands and artists mentioned in the magazine, which means they have the opportunity to be informed (Katz) of current affairs surrounding the artist. If the magazine eventually moves to the online digital market, the audience may be able to interact with certain media products from the magazine, such as videos or music clips, which can serve the purpose of online entertainment (Katz).Stereotype(s):Stereotypically, my audience are generally known as ‘caregivers,’ or ‘social climbers,’ as described in Maslow’s Hierarchy of needs and would be seen to be wearing smart/ casual clothing with less of an ego and longing for attention.
