Meditation The Jews murmured about him. (John 6:41)

Let’s face it. We all murmur and grumble. It’s one of the most popular ways we humans have come up with for expressing our disagreement or displeasure over some-thing. Elijah grumbled as he sought protection from Jeze-bel’s anger. He had just seen God perform a spectacular miracle, and still he complained: “This is enough, O Lord! Take my life” (1 Kings 19:4). Somehow, he lost sight of all God had done for him and could focus only on the immediate threat. It’s as if the problem before him was too big for God to handle! More than anything else, grumbling is a sign of unbelief. Elijah found it hard to believe and trust that God would continue to take care of him. Similarly, the people in to-day’s Gospel reading couldn’t believe that Jesus had the power to bring them spiritual salvation. They had just feasted on an overabundance of bread and fish that Jesus miraculously provided, but this sign simply was not enough to convince them that he was something special. This passage shows us how easy it is to doubt God when he says something hard to accept—no matter how many other miracles we have seen in our lives. And when we grumble, we risk missing out on what he is prepared to do for us today. We are so busy building arguments against God that we don’t have any time to build an argument for him. Jesus is the Bread of Life, and he wants to feed us with his grace today. He wants to show himself to us so that we never have a reason to grumble or doubt him. So re-ceive him in faith today. Be like Mary, who willingly accepted God’s plan for her to bear the Son of God. Or be like Peter, who, despite the grumbling around him, told Jesus: “You have the words of eternal life. We have come to believe and are convinced that you are the Holy One of God” (John 6:68-69).

“Jesus, teach me to trust in you more deeply today.” ~The Word Among Us

Holy Humor...Dressed for Temptation Struggling to make ends meet on a first-call salary, the pastor was livid when he confronted his wife with the re-ceipt for a $250 dress she had bought. “How could you do this!?” “I was outside the store looking at the dress in the window, and then I found myself trying it on,” she ex-plained. “It was like Satan was whispering in my ear, ‘You look fabulous in that dress. Buy it!” “Well,” the pastor replied, “You know how I deal with that kind of temptation? I say, ‘Get behind me, Satan!” “I did,” re-plied his wife, “but then he said, “It looks fabulous from back here, too!”

Rose of Lima Rose's baptismal name was Isabel, the daughter of Gaspar Flores and Maria de Oliva. But she was such a beautiful baby that she was nicknamed "Rose." It was a name that she took as her own at her confirmation. But she did not desire her beauty and considered it a dis-traction from her real love, Jesus. When her parents wished to marry her off, Rose refused, wanting to remain a virgin for Christ. Rose fasted regu-larly and prayed constantly. Her holiness became re-nowned. Even though she hoped to become a nun, her father would not permit it, and so Rose practiced the spiri-tual life as a lay member of the Third Order of St. Domi-nic. When Rose died at the age of thirty-one, her funeral was held at the cathedral in Lima and attended by many digni-taries. Numerous miracles were attributed to her. Pope Clement X canonized her in 1671, making her the first saint of the Americas.

Happy Birthday, Fr. Mike Ewert! Thursday, August 16th

God bless you with health, happiness & holiness.

Word of Life In only the last few years we’ve experienced rampant dis-regard for religious beliefs in this country with the ap-proval of embryonic stem cell research; legal justification for the torture of prisoners; the provision of tax dollars to abortion providers; the HHS mandates; and, most re-cently, a redefinition of marriage by many of our leading political figures. We can see that there is a loss of a sense of truth here, and objective moral norms—rules of con-duct that apply always, to everyone, everywhere—and an “eclipse of a sense of God and of man.” ...To this culture of death the Church boldly and joyfully promotes the culture of life. We recognize that we hu-mans are at our best when we give ourselves away in self-less love and live no longer for ourselves, but for another. This is what Pope John Paul the Great calls the “law of the gift,” echoing the words of Jesus that, “No one has greater love than this, than to lay down one’s life for one’s friends.” ~Cardinal Timothy M. Dolan, Archbishop of New York and USCCB President, True Freedom: On Protecting Human Dignity and Religious Liberty, p. 30

Are we going to have a sign or not? I know several of you have expressed questions regarding the new signage for the parish. Yes, we are moving ahead. Part of the process was letting the diocesan office know we were planning this. They highly suggested we wait for Fr. John to arrive. Unfortunately, being summer time and changes in schedules, both his and mine, have created a lag in the process. As soon as we get the go ahead—very soon I hope, we will be on track and the new sign will be installed. Thank you for all of your support and patience in this endeavor. Nothing is easy or simple!

Use Holy Water

Among all the many sacramentals of the Church, there is one so ordinary, so commonplace and so readily accessible to every-one that people are inclined to forget it and neglect using it. The use of Holy Water is no recent innovation but a time hon-ored tradition in Holy Mother the Church. It has been used in all Catholic churches throughout the world and among all the faithful since the very beginnings of Christianity. Holy Water has its great efficacy from the prayer of Holy Mother the Church. The prayer the priest prays to bless water states the benefits of using Holy Water with faith in God. “Oh, God, grant that this water may be endowed with divine grace to drive away devils and to cast out diseases, that what-ever in the houses or possessions of the faithful may be sprin-kled with this water, may be freed from everything unclean and delivered from everything hurtful...Let everything that threatens the peace or safety of the dwellers therein be ban-ished by the sprinkling of this water, so that the health which they seek by calling on Thy Holy Name may be guarded from all assault.” When entering and leaving church, devoutly bless yourself with Holy Water as you make the sign of the Cross. Take some Holy Water home, and use it to bless yourself and your chil-dren.

“By this Holy Water and by Thy Precious Blood wash away my sins, O Lord!”

Bring in the Healthy Harvest Buying locally at farmers' markets is a healthy investment for you and your community. Buying locally is good for you: food tastes better and is more nutritious when it's fresh. Fresh pro-duce is a great way to move towards a healthier lifestyle. Buy-ing locally is good for your community: keeping local farmers and producers in business supports the local economy. Buying locally is good for farmers: when farmers sell directly to their neighbors, farmers can afford to stay on their land, producing an abundance and variety of food while being good stewards of the land. Buying locally is good for the environment: reducing the travel distance food takes saves energy and reduces packaging. Take some time to educate yourself on where food comes from and choose food items that have a positive impact on your body and your health.
