PASTOR’S CORNER
Physical and mental benefits of apologizing
When we hold grudges and refuse to give or receive an
apology, it affects our physical health. “It never sits quite
right — you toss, you turn in bed, you have that sinking
feeling in your chest, you eat, you drink too much, you get
headaches,” says Charline Laino, author of an article about
the health benefits of apologizing at WebMD.
A good apology affects the health of those on the receiving
end, too. Laino also mentions a 2002 study by researchers
from Hope College and Virginia Commonwealth University
that showed that heart rate, blood pressure, sweat levels, and
facial tension decreased in victims of wrongs even when they
simply imagine receiving an apology.
Apologizing only helps when a person really means it.
Insincere apologies are often a way to avoid guilt — and
we’ve seen plenty of examples of that in the media with
public figures and celebrities who just want to move on after
a controversy. For instance, actor Jason Biggs once wrote
some insensitive tweets after an airplane crash. He took some
heat for it and eventually came up with this, “People were
offended, and that was not my intent. Sorry to those of you
that were … my comments might have come off as insensitive and ill-timed. For that, I apologize.”
I do understand his attempt to avoid responsibility with a
lame, half-apology that really doesn’t address the wrong. But if that were me, I’d continue to feel sick about it.
Apologizing affects us not just physically, but mentally, too.
It can lower incidents of depression, anxiety, and help renew
past relationships. In a powerful piece in Psychology Today,
writer Beverly Engel described how a simple “I’m sorry”
from her mother, after being estranged from each other for
three years, healed her emotionally.
Old grudges create baggage and continue to affect new
relationships. Sometimes I’ve been tempted not to apologize
because I think I’ll never see the person again and the
problem will fade away. But it never really does. Lingering hurts eventually catch up with us.
I saw this up close and personal as a pastor when I
occasionally attended an Alcoholics Anonymous group at
our church to offer support. At those meetings, I heard some
of the most fearless, honest self-examination of past wrongs
that I’ve ever encountered. The 12 steps of AA focus on
making a moral inventory and righting past wrongs, and the
9th step is about making amends. Even seemingly unrelated
past mistakes can keep us from making progress — and this is true for us all.
God Bless You! - Fr. Pendzick

Our “Greeter Ministry” The ministry of hospitality is very
important to our Liturgical Celebrations.
We are called to be welcoming and
helpful to all who enter our doors. It is
our primary concern and duty to help
those who have gathered in any way that
we can, including making them feel at home. Ministers of
Hospitality are the first to greet those gathering and the last
ones to say goodbye to them after our worship together has
concluded.
As Ministers of Hospitality, we are cheerful, patient, kind,
understanding, and genuinely concerned for the welfare of
those in our midst. We approach our ministry with reverence,
humility, and a grateful heart. We are called to “be Christ” to
everyone who enters the doors of our parish, and we are
called to embrace them as Christ embraces each one of us, as
we come to the table seeking the nourishment that only God
can give.
If you are interested in learning more about this ministry,
please call Mary Spieker at the parish office 610–266-0695.

What Do the Letters "INRI"
Stand for on the Cross?
A crucifix often has the letters "INRI"
carved into the wood of the cross.
These letters are short for the Latin
phrase, "Iesus Nazarenus, Rex
Iudaeorum," which translates to
"Jesus of Nazareth, King of the Jews."
These are the words which Pontius Pilate, the Roman
governor of Judea who sentenced Jesus to death, ordered to
be written on the cross on which Jesus Christ was crucified.
Police, Firefighters, First Responders,
Legal Professionals, Health Care Workers,
& their Families are invited to join Bishop Alfred A.
Schlert as he celebrates the First Red, White & Blue Mass
Tuesday, September 11th, at 6:30 pm Cathedral of Saint
Catharine of Siena 18th and Turner Streets, Allentown PA.
Please wear your uniforms. Reception to follow in the Parish
Activities Center RSVP: [email protected]
One day, a young boy asked an old man: “Sir, which is the
best day to pray?” The wise old man replied: “My son, the
best day to pray is the day before your die.” The boy was
astonished and replied: “Sir, how can I know the day of my
death?” and the old man answered: “No one knows the day
of their death, that’s why we need to pray every day.”
The statues of the 1st Synod of the Diocese of Allentown state that: “There shall be a Parish Advisory Council
in every parish of the Diocese” (Statute 24). The Parish Council gives advice to the pastor and makes
recommendations about worship and prayer, marriage and family, education, parish activities, community
relations, social action, youth and young adults, ecumenism, etc. The members of this council should be
representative of the parish and consist of parishioners in good standing (practicing Catholics eighteen years or
older, baptized, confirmed, and if married: validly married in the church) Employees of St. Elizabeth are not
eligible. While some members may be appointed, others are elected by the parishioners.
If you would like to nominate someone (or yourself) to this advisory board please fill in this nomination ballot.
Place nominations in the collection basket or turn them into the parish office. All nominations must be turned in
by August 26th. Elections then will be held September 2
nd – 16

Capital Expenditures St. Elizabeth has a rich joyful history. Under the direction of Msgr. Muntone, there was a major capital improvement of the extension of the office and rectory. The parish buildings were maintained; however, time does take its toll and simple repairs no longer suffice. Under the direction of Fr. Essig, we repainted the Church interior, laid new carpeting, refinished the pews, and repadded the kneelers. A new piano was purchased and a new pulpit commissioned. LED lights were installed and the sound system was upgraded. Most of these items were covered by parish reserves. Soon after my arrival, it became apparent that the boilers and air conditioner units that service the parish could no longer be effectively repaired and some were replaced immediately by new more efficient units. St. Elizabeth parishioners responded to my request for $200 per family with generous donations totaling $62,000. With the approval of the diocese, this paid for 6 new A/C units and part of the school boiler. Recently some roof repairs were made and the worn carpet in the office was replaced. A meeting room and second office were created on the ground floor of the church offices to better accommodate our parishioners who struggle with stairs. The old daycare was renovated into the annex, creating a new, expanded and welcoming preschool. The old rectory and convent are being updated and spruced up to preserve these buildings and make them useful. In the Church the new pulpit has already been installed, the Ciborium (cups that hold the hosts) have been re-plated, and additional lights put in the Choir loft. The rectory kitchen had not been touched in a long time and needed some updating. Over the past year I had fun taking down the wallpaper and painting most of the rectory and kitchen myself. With my dad’s help we fixed up some of the kitchen ourselves too. In the upcoming years much still needs to be done and there are some major repairs still anticipated. The boiler (for the hall, offices, and rectory) needs to be replaced (@$60,000); the social hall A/C units need to be replaced (@$75,000); brickwork needs to be done to the buildings (over $75,000); the stained-glass windows need to be repaired; and the parish hall kitchen needs to be updated. If you have any personal expertise or experience with these issues please contact me, I appreciate your help. We are hoping to raise funds for these items through the capital campaign envelopes and will continue to include these envelopes in your packets. Please place them into the regular collection or consider either a onetime charitable gift or a plan a bequest in your will to the care of your parish. I hope that this letter and financial statement summaries are helpful to you as we tend to the maintenance of your parish and create a legacy for future generations. Thank you! St. Elizabeth of Hungary is a wonderful supportive parish family. In Prayer, Fr. John Pendzick
