Dearest Parishioners,

Peace in the Lord. Excuse the long wait on my first “Pastor’s Corner.” I did not plan to be transferred, go away quickly for vacation and retreat, and then return practically starting over again. Fortunately, little by little, I am finding a rhythm and am beginning to pace myself a bit better. Having said that, little by little I am coming to know you: through the Liturgy and devotions, through your kindness and warm welcome, and through your generous involvement in the activities and events of our parish. Most important for me now is to get to know you personally and to understand the traditions and culture of the parish in all its locations. Even though distance separates us, I have noticed already a bonding and collaboration among our parishioners that strengthen our parish unity. This brings me to another very important point: this is your parish. Pastors and priests come and go, but parishioners remain. Parishioners who take “ownership” of their parish find their Catholic faith more vibrant and relevant. Shane Claiborne, a young pastor and founder of The Simple Way in Kensington, Philadelphia said: “Stop criticizing the church you have experienced and build the church that you dream of.” Let’s start dreaming and building – together. As we come to know each other and build together, we come to see the miracles that God wants to perform through us. Let us do our best and the Lord will do the rest. Fr. Matthew

“Rather, when you hold a banquet, invite the poor,

the crippled, the lame, the blind; blessed indeed will you be because of their inability to repay you."

LUKE 14:13 -14A We have a difficult time with the concept of giving without expecting something in return. Even when we give to charity we often want something in return – a raffle ticket, a dinner, or a chance to play golf. Yet, as Christian Stewards we need to remember that the true reward for our giving awaits us in heaven.

Mass books for 2017 are now available.

Family life well lived confirms the words of Jesus in today’s gospel, “Those who humble themselves will be exalted.” Commitment, intimacy, loyalty and love are the rewards of humble service and care for one another.

Second Reading: Hebrews 12:18-19, 22-24a

Gospel: Luke 14:1, 7-14 Jesus went to share a meal with one of the leading Pharisees when he noticed other guests competing for places of honor at the table. He warned that a guest who takes the place of honor may be asked to move to the lowest place. Yet a guest who takes the lowest place is honored when a better position is offered by their host. He then added, "He who humbles himself will be exalted."

The world was a playground for Mickey, a naive Irish American kid bored with his life. His father served in World War II, his brother was a Marine in Vietnam; now it was his turn. His 365 days in Vietnam builds in torment until an attack on a bunker complex in Cambodia. Wounded, his friend captured, he becomes a tormented survivor knowing he is always just a heartbeat from death.

In this memoir, set as deeply in his mind as in the Southeast Asian jungle, a young American soldier embarks

on a journey to a war that, for him, will never be over.
