The Proceedings of the National Academy of Scieences (PNAS) is seeking a managing editor and a business operations manager.
Managing Editor Will evaluate manuscripts for compliance with policies; super- vise maintenance of manuscript tracking and data bases of authors, reviewers, sponsors, and manuscripts; provide support to the editor-in-chief regarding manuscript submission and peer review process; track performance and scheduling of reviews; supervise staff in the processing of manuscripts; communicate modifications to authors; interpret policy and procedures for members, reviewers, and authors; respond to inquiries regarding journal policy and procedures; and prepare reports. Requires an M.A./M.S. or equivalent, preferably in English or science with a broad understanding of and interest in the sciences and at least eight years experience related to managing peer review and manuscript tracking operations for scientific, technical, medical, or professional journals. Previous managerial/supervisory expe- rience required. Computer skills using data base applications and tracking systems and excellent oral and written communication skills also required. Manager, Business Operations Will prepare budgets; supervise subscription fulfillment func- tions and act upon changes in circulation that affect press runs or other production and financial aspects of the journal; super- vise the overall relationship with providers of outsourced ser- vices to ensure compliance with contract terms; manage the advertising sales program for PNAS for both classified and display advertising and the marketing program for PNAS circu- lation development, and supervise providers of these services; monitor all major financial indicators; forecast changes in costs and revenues for upcoming years and recommend to the pub- lisher appropriate price increases in all areas of revenue; evaluate and manage electronic publishing projects; and provide detailed reports to the publisher on all aspects of journal management. Requires a B.A./B.S. or equivalent, preferably in business ad- ministration or finance with a broad knowledge and understand- ing of financial and marketing management in professional publishing; and at least six to seven years of experience related to managing journals, preferably in the non-profit sector. Com- puter skills using spreadsheet and business graphics applications essential. Previous supervisory experience desirable. Excellent oral and written communication skills required.
