Colonialism and Under-development in East Africa 1919-39 E.A. Brett Lecturer in Political Science, University of Sussex An original and provoking study which seeks to establish a general theory of colonialism. British Colonial policy was an adjustment of interest groups within an ideologically agreed framework, and not just a muddled empirical resolution of differing interests. The author maintains that the efforts of this policy were inimical to economic development in East Africa. ?4.00 ?2.00 paperback

African Women in Towns An Aspect of Africa's Social Revolution KENNETH LITTLE This book analyses the changing position of women in an urban context in sub-Saharan Africa. Professor Little uses the concept of urbanization in order to analyse the radical changes taking place. He shows how certain women's movements, though different in some respects from Women's Lib., are growing out of the African woman's desire for a new relationship with men. This leads him to consider, among other things, the part played by women in the political arena. Hard covers ?4.90 net

THE JOURNAL OF MODERN AFRICAN STUDIES

The Journal offers a quarterly survey of politics, economics, and related topics in contemporary Africa.

The main emphasis is upon the peoples and policies, the problems and progress of this dynamic and disparate continent; upon the many societies that are evolving rather than the essential characteristics of the old; upon the present, not on the more distant past. The best current work is sought from specialists in different academic disciplines, whose contributions can illuminate and cross- fertilise one another.

The Journal seeks to promote a deeper understanding of what is happening in Africa today. It is intended for both the political scientist and the practical poli- tician, the administrator and the advocate, the economist and the educator, the banker and the'businessman, the diplomat and the technocrat, the civil servant and the nationalist leader. All have something to contribute to these pages and, it is hoped, much to learn from them.

Editorial policy avoids commitment to any political viewpoint or ideology, whether imperialism, pan-Africanism, capitalism, socialism, or nationalism. Such concepts, however, have relevance to the modern African situation, and merit serious discussion, often from several different points of view, in order that con- troversial issues may be fairly examined.
