THE MARX-WEBER DEBATE edited by NORBERT WILEY,

Uniuersity of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign Adherents of the theories of Karl Marx and Max Weber, the two giants of social theory, have been arguing the relative merits of their theoretical systems for almost a century. But in recent years, the concept of interaction and synthesis between. the work of these two theorists, rather than separa- tion and contradiction, has become ever more popular and acceptable. According to the authors of this volume, Marx and Weber do cross paths in several important middle-level theoretical areas: contradiction, revolution, the role of culture, the class-status relation, the self. It is in these areas that the interplay of Marxist and Weberian ideas has created new developments in theoretical sociology, and strengthened social theory generally. The contributors to this volume, leading spokespersons of Marxian and Weberian scholarship, explore these areas of overlap between the works of Marx and Weber, and the theoretical gains possible from this interaction. The depth and insight they give to the issues moves the Marx-Weber question to the center of macro theory. In addition, the macro-micro connec- tion, linking social structure to self, interaction, and gender, is given new answers. Theorists will be especially interested in this book, but it will provide new intellectual tools for anyone interested in the dynamics of contemporary society. CONTENTS: Introduction N. WILEY // 1. Princeton University Press Merleau-Ponty and the Foundation of an Existential Politics Kerry H. Whiteside

Drawing on previously unexplored sources, Kerry H. Whiteside presents the political theory of Maurice Merleau-Ponty (1908-1961), one of France's best-known twentieth-century philosophers. White- side argues that Merleau-Ponty's objective in his political writings was to make existentialism into the foundation for a philosophically consistent mode of political thinking. This study discusses the inade- quacies Merleau-Ponty found in the traditional philosophies of em- piricism and idealism, and then examines the subject-object dualism that he believed deprived previous forms of existentialism of political significance. Reason, Ideology, and Politics Shawn W. Rosenberg

In this book, Shawn Rosenberg offers a new approach to the study of political ideology. Reviewing some of the dominant perspectives in political science, Rosenberg shows that a great deal of both theo- retical thinking and empirical research has been hampered by an inadequate interpretation of the relationship between political thought and action. Reason, Ideology, and Politics provides an important theoretical and practical discussion that will determine the course of debate in this area. Cloth: $37.50 ISBN 0-691-07785-1

New Order of the Ages Time, the Constitution, and the Making of Modern American Political Thought Michael Lienesch

Were the early Americans a distinctively modern people, a people without a past? Or were they motivated by a premodern or classical republican mentality? To examine the shift from eighteenth-century classical republicanism to what we call modern liberalism, Michael Lienesch shows how Americans adopted modern ways of thinking about time (e.g. concepts of reform, development, and progress), while they continued to be influenced by classical republican ideas, a sometimes paradoxical mix of beliefs that continues to characterize American political thought today. Handbook of Sociology edited by NEIL J. SMELSER, University of California, Berkeley

The Handbook of Sociology ushers in a new age of sociological thought and practice. This long awaited volume synthesizes the field. Itprovides an original and comprehen- sive look at this vital discipline- that has not had a new handbook in 25 years...years in which sociology as a field of study and practice has undergone significant change. Eminent scholars representing both micro and macro perspectives combine their expertise to address the diversity, growth, and new developments that characterize the field of sociology today.

Smelser, one of the leading sociologists of our time, introduces the Handbook with a reflective and insightful essay on the historical developments within the field, the status of sociology as a discipline, and the future of the profession. The first set of essays offers definitive statements on theoretical and methodological principles (Wallace, Alexan- der, Smelser, Rossi, and Berk). Inequality, institutional and organizational settings, and social process and change are each examined at length by experts in such subfields as work and labor (Granovetter and Tilly, and Miller), race and ethnicity (See and Wilson), aging (Riley, Foner, and Waring), environments and organizations (Aldrich and Marsden), family (Huber and Spitze), medical (Cockerham), world economy (Evans and Stephens) and more! Offering incomparable depth and breadth, the Handbook of Sociology effectively synthesizes the complex and controversial issues that surround the discipline of sociology.

'1 have had occasion to read carefully through almost every one of these chapters. Reflecting Professor Smelser's tasteful coordination, they are a remarkable collection of ideas and reflection. Never in recent years have Ifelt so excited by the insights and potential of work in such diverse areas of our discipline. If you were to buy only one book this year, youjustfound it -a powerful review, critique and reconceptualization of the state-of-the-art; more, an exhilarating look into the future."

KARL MARX by RICHARD P. APPELBAUM,

University of California, Santa Barbara

This cogent volume examines the development of key issues in Marxist theory-detenninism, voluntarism, and their reconciliation. It discusses the philosophical aspects of Marx's theories which present ways humans are capable of shaping their historical destiny; moves to his view of capitalism as a constraint in detenninism; and demon- strates the ambivalence evident in his writings. "In a world where there must be atleasta hundred volumes telling us what Marx really meant, it is unlikely that yet another book on the subject can be an original contribu- tion. Professor Applebaum, who long ago established a reputation as a majorMarxist scholar, has written the best summary ofMarxist theory yet. Without jargon or apology he succinctly summarizes the main tenets of both Marxist theory and Marxist method. The task he undertakes is a formidable one and he delivers a brilliant and lasting work. This book is essential readingfor anyone interested in furthering their knowledge of Marxist theory whether they are established authorities or beginning students. It is must reading for social scientists generally and sociolo- gists in particular."' -William J. Chambliss, George Washington University
