Uniuersity of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign Adherents of the theories of Karl Marx and Max Weber, the two giants of social theory, have been arguing the relative merits of their theoretical systems for almost a century. But in recent years, the concept of interaction and synthesis between. the work of these two theorists, rather than separa- tion and contradiction, has become ever more popular and acceptable. According to the authors of this volume, Marx and Weber do cross paths in several important middle-level theoretical areas: contradiction, revolution, the role of culture, the class-status relation, the self. It is in these areas that the interplay of Marxist and Weberian ideas has created new developments in theoretical sociology, and strengthened social theory generally. The contributors to this volume, leading spokespersons of Marxian and Weberian scholarship, explore these areas of overlap between the works of Marx and Weber, and the theoretical gains possible from this interaction. The depth and insight they give to the issues moves the Marx-Weber question to the center of macro theory. In addition, the macro-micro connec- tion, linking social structure to self, interaction, and gender, is given new answers.
