THE MUSICAL TIMES -APRIL 1, 1857.

March, 1857. J, ALFRED NOVELLO is now issuing Centenary editions of Handel's Oratorios and

Cantatas, complete, in Vocal Score, for Is. 6d. or 2s. each, and portions of them at the cost of a few pence; in order to facilitate the universal celebration of the Centenary commemoration of the great Composer's death (in 1759), which appears likely to absorb the chief share of attention in musical society between the present period and the year 1859.

To aid this national musical movement, and in gratitude for the public patronage already bestowed upon J. ALFRED NOVELLO'S original conception and production of the Cheap Octavo Oratorios, he is now selling complete Vocal Score copies of the following works at the small prices stated; viz.;-

When these Octavo editions were first printed in 1846, nothing of the kind had ever been attempted; and, from the very small prices charged, their commercial success was deemed by competent authorities to be far from hopeful. It might have been so, but that an extended use for these books was invented at the same time-viz., the use of such books by the AUDIENCE, instead of being confined, as previously, to the PERFORMnERS. Novello's editions were also the first type works which had the words (or text) of a proportionate size to the music, so that both could be conveniently read at the same distance from the eye.

These causes combined to give the Octavos a success far beyond the most sanguine expecta- tions of the designer; the number of complete Oratorios, Masses, and Cantatas, has been constantly increased, comprehending works of more limited demand, besides other octavo collections of Glees, Part-Songs, Anthems, &c. Since 1846, the Public have been admitted to the benefit of this success, by a reduction in price of the most popular works in 1854; and now, by an issue of ALL the Octavo Oratorios in paper covers, at Is. 6d. or 2s. each. J. A. N. may also cite the reduction (in 1848-9) of full 50 per cent. in price, throughout his extensive Catalogue of classical composi- tions, as proof of his determination to foster and cultivate the musical taste of a rising generation, and thus, by anticipating, create a want which his publications were so well able to supply.

J. ALFRED NOVELLO believes that the Public, who have watched the progress of these inven- tions, and their influence upon the diffusion of Art, have seen with disgust the bald imitations put forth, with unscrupulous assertions, by those publishers who are not ashamed to appropriate to themselves the ideas of the originator, when there appears to be no risk in doing so, because it is evident that the reduplication of servile copies of works already accessible confers no new benefit on Musical progress; and he feels most grateful for the steady support his publications have continued to receive from all grades of Musical Society throughout Great Britain, the Colonies, and America.

g": Each Work is complete, and printed in the same style as formerly, and on the SAME QUALITY OF PAPER as that hitherto used

for Novello's Octavo Edition of Oratorios. Specimen pages and lists of the works in Novello's Octavo Series may be had gratis on application,

or sent post-free for one stamp.

rIHE HYMNAL NOTED.-The increased attention pa;d of late years to the music of the Church has necessarily

led to inquiry into the best mode of reviving the use of metri- cal Hymns; and where the Prayer Book Psalter,. pointed by authority, is sung (as it always should be), the ordinary metrical versions of the Psalms are no longer found to satisfy either the religious wants or the musical tastes of Christians. To supply the want universally felt, and very generally acknowledged, the Ecclesiological Society have laboured with great care, for some time past, to procure good translations of the Hymns which have been written by such holy men as S. Hilary, S. Ambrose, Prudentius, Sedulius, S. Ennodius, and S. Gregory, in the earlier ages of the Church ; by Fortunatus, the Vene- rable Bede, S. Bernard, Hildeberr, S. Thomas Aquinai, S. Notker, Godescalcus, and Adam of S. Victor, in mediaeval times; and by Santolius Victorinus, since the revival of classical learning.

From these authors are derived the original metrical Hymns which the whole Western Church incorporated into her liturgy. The Reformers of the English Church wished, but were unable, to translate them ; Archbishop Cranmer desired that as his " English verses wanted the grace and faculty which he could wish they had," the king " would cause some other to do them into more pleasant English and phrase."

The first part of a Hymnal, intended to supply from these proper sources an orderly course of Hymns for the Christian year, has now for some time been found of eminent service in those Churches where it has been used; and a second part, to complete the work, is just ready for publication.

The music is that to which, with slight variations, these Hymns have been universally sung; it is taken principally from ancient records of the English use, now extant in the British Museum. These melodies are eminently adapted for Congregational use, and have been proved to answer better on the whole than more modern tunes. The harmonies are composed on the model of the great Harmonists of the best periods of Church Music.
