Community of Fate German-Soviet Diplomatic Relations, 1922-1928

In April 1922, when Germany became the first major power to estab- lish diplomatic relations with Soviet Russia, each country needed the other's cooperation to regain its place in the sun.

Count Ulrich von Brockdorff-Rantzau, first German ambassador to Moscow, was fully cognizant of the strategic value of Soviet friendship to Germany, and until his death in 1928 devoted his diplomatic skill to the maintenance of a relationship that was constantly endangered by Soviet intractability, ruthlessness, and calculated duplicity, and the diplomatic crises that resulted.

More than 120,000 documents of the German Foreign Office files captured in World War 11 were translated and analyzed by the author for this engrossing study of secret diplomacy in the decade after the First World War.
