Notices / Avis

Notices of positions vacant and other matters of interest to members of the Association are published free of charge, at the discretion of the editors.

Listing of working papers The managing editor would like to hear from any institutions in Canada which regularly publish working papers or similar series. Respondents should indicate whether they think it would be useful and feasible to publish a list of working papers issued during the previous quarter in the JOURNAL,

whether they could designate a particular person who would regularly pro- vide such lists by specified deadlines, and how many papers they normally issue in a quarter.

The views of other readers on such a venture are also solicited.

CANADIAN JOURNAL OF ECONOMICS

Note to contributors

The Canadian Journal of Economics is interested in publishing papers which are significant contributions to knowledge in all areas of economics, with the exception of highly technical papers addressed to small specialist audiences. We define a contribution to knowledge as any one of the following: (i) a new theoretical finding, (ii) a revision of received theory or interpretation, (iii) empirical findings which are likely to be of value to scholars, (iv) high-level criticism and evaluation of others' work.

When manuscripts are submitted to referees, the author's name and, if necessary, the lead footnote are deleted by the editor in order to minimize biased appraisal.

Manuscript submissions, and all correspondence relating to the contents of the Journal, should be sent to the Managing Editor, Canadian Journal of Economics, Department of Economics, Queen's University, Kingston, Ontario, K7L 3N6. Manuscripts should be sent in four copies.

Authors who are not members of the Canadian Economics Association must enclose with the manuscript either a submission fee of $20.00 Canadian or a membership fee on the terms indicated on the inside front cover, as applicable. Unless instructions to the contrary are received, the fee submitted with the manuscript will be treated as a membership fee.

Style guidelines

1/Manuscript submission in any conventional finished form will be assessed for publication. Four copies should be sent. In manuscripts with mathematical proofs the authors should submit with the manuscripts separate statements on the full mathematical workings which lead to the conclusions. These are required for the assistance of the referees and will help speed up the appraisal of the manuscripts. Any ancillary material available from the author on request should be enclosed for the referees.

2/Four copies are required of the final versions of accepted manuscripts. Manuscripts may be typed, xeroxed, or mimeographed, but must be double-spaced on 8.5 x 11 paper. Tables and diagrams should be submitted on separate pages. Footnotes, including the lead footnote, also double-spaced, should be placed in a single listing at the end of the paper.

3/References to other work should also be incorporated in a separate list of references typed double-spaced. These references should be listed alphabetically with name of author, title, and date of publication, in the follow- ing forms as appropriate:

Items in the list of references should be referred to either in the text or in footnotes by naming the author and date. For example; (a) Head and Shoup (1969, 568); (b) Marsh (1960, 4): (c) Marsh (1960, 7) (not op cit); (d ibid., 12.

4/Diagrams should be provided in a form suitable for reproduction. Ideally, diagrams should be done pro- fessionally in India ink (black) on strong white paper and one and one-half times the size that the figure is to be when printed.

5/The author will be asked to incorporate least-cost mathematical notation as far as possible, and to provide a separate listing of numbered equations. Please try to avoid letters I and o as symbols, because these can be con- fused with numbers. Avoid circumflexes, bars, dots, and tildes, so far as possible, because these must be set by hand: superscripts or subscripts are to be preferred. Fractions should, whenever possible, be written in the form

b + mQ -o ntne (b + mQ)/(3j), not in the form Roots should be written as fractional powers -for instance, 3 ,~~~3

(x/y + m/n)"13, not x + _

6/Statistical tables should be included only when the data are not readily available elsewhere and when they are actually used in the paper's analysis.

7/The detailed results of regressions and similar calculations should be included only to the extent that these results: (a) are actually discussed in the paper, or (b) will be of definite use to other scholars.

REVUE CANADIENNE D'ECONOMIQUE
