GUIDELINES FOR AUTHORS

The Journal welcomes for publication consideration articles on subjects of interest to professional conser- vators. These articles may treat their subjects general- ly or in detail; they may include practical, scientific, theoretical, or historical topics.

REVIEW PROCESS: All manuscripts of substantial

length will be considered by the editor, an associate editor in the appropriate specialty, and two reviewers selected by the associate editor. Short manuscripts will be considered by the editor and an associate edi- tor. Manuscripts will be reviewed for their interest and overall suitability for the Journal, as well as for

accuracy, clarity, and effectiveness of communication. The author will receive copies of the reviewers'

reports. Acceptance of a manuscript may be condi- tional upon suggested revisions, which the author will be expected to complete within three months.

CORRESPONDING AUTHORS: If there are mul-

tiple authors, one should be designated the corre-

sponding author who will be responsible for all com- munication with the editorial office.

MANUSCRIPT LENGTH: Manuscripts should be limited to 30 pages double-spaced, including refer- ences, and illustrations should be limited to a number

equal to the length of six printed pages of the Journal. The submission of short communications is also

encouraged.

REFERENCE STYLE: Reference style should be in the author-date endnote format recommended as

style B in the Chicago Manual of Style, 14th edition

(see below for examples). Footnotes should not be used.

FORMAT: Manuscripts must be typed in a 10 or 12

point standard typeface, on 8.5 by 11 inch white

paper (one side only), with paragraphs indented, dou-

ble-spaced (including captions and references), with author's name and page number in the upper right corner of each page; a 1-in margin or more on all sides; and stapled top left. Numbered section headings should be used. Papers should include the following parts (in this order): an abstract of 100-200 words, the text, references, a list of suppliers of equipment (if any) with addresses, an author biography of approxi- mately 100 words, and a list of figure captions. Recent back issues of the Journal should be consulted for for- mat and style.

PHOTOGRAPHS: All photographs must be submit-

ted in the form of black and white prints. Slides will not be accepted. Photographs must be glossy, sharp, at least 4 by 5 in with crop marks. Contact the AIC office for information on submitting color pho- tographs. Appropriate credit must be given for all photographs not taken by the author. The owner of any work illustrated should be listed.

ILLUSTRATIONS: All black-and-white illustrations must be of a suitable visual standard for reproduction. Drawings must be in black ink, sharply rendered; fig- ures, graphs, and tables must be printed on a laser printer (at least 300 dpi), typeset, or provided in another high-quality camera-ready form. Each illus- tration should be identified on the front with the author's name and figure or table number; arabic numerals should be used. All illustrative material must be accompanied by a listing of captions at the end of the paper. Captions should be concise. Detailed dis- cussion of what the illustrative material shows should appear in the text of the paper; the text should include a reference to the figure or table by number. For magnified photographs, the caption should include a correct description (such as scanning elec- tron micrograph) and should include the magnifica- tion. All illustrations will be returned to the author.

COPIES: Eight complete copies of the paper and eight sets of the illustrations must be submitted. Copies of illustrations must be originals or high qual- ity photocopies. COMPUTER DISKS: Upon acceptance of a manu- script for publication, the author will be asked to pro- vide a copy on disk.

ACCEPTANCE FOR REVIEW: Only a complete manuscript with all the parts indicated above, and prepared as specified above, will be accepted for review.

PAGE PROOFS & OFFPRINTS: Page proofs will be sent to the authors for proofreading and must be returned within two weeks of receipt. The author will receive 25 free offprints; in the case of multiple authors the number remains at 25. More offprints may be obtained by prior agreement, with the author or authors bearing the additional cost.

PERMISSIONS:Authors are responsible for the con- tent and accuracy of their articles, as well as for obtaining written permission to reproduce material owned or copyrighted by others for national and

Clear epoxies

for repair or restoration,

EPO-TEK 301 and 301-2 epoxies dry clear and hard to repair or restore valuable antiques and artifacts with- out altering the original piece.

Its uses include (but are not limited to) restora- tion or repair of wood, ceramics, stone, porcelain, china and glass. The epoxy can be used to coat surfaces or to penetrate and bond porous materials and cracks in nonporous materials.

Both are two part, optically transpar-

ent epoxy systems with very low vis-

cosities (comparable to water), and room

temperature cure. When cured, they become extremely strong, hard, clear plastics with excellent bond strength.
