ARCTIC, ANTARCTIC, AND ALPINE RESEARCH

INSTRUCTIONS FOR PREPARING AND SUBMITTING NEW MANUSCRIPTS

Editorial Policy Arctic, Antarctic, and Alpine Research continues Arctic and Alpine

Research from Vol. 31 (1999). The journal publishes original research papers, resulting correspondence, and short notes dealing with any scientific or cultural aspect of arctic, antarctic, and alpine environments and related topics on the subarctic, subantarctic, and subalpine and on related paleoenvironments and in the context of global change. Papers may be uni- or multidisciplinary but should have interdisciplinary appeal. Direct any questions regarding manuscript preparation to the Managing Editor: (303) 492-3765 [email protected]. Manuscript Preparation

Use current issues of the journal as a guide to style and layout. Number pages of the manuscript consecutively. The maximum length of a paper, including references, should be about 6000 words. Manuscripts should be saved as computer files. Compose text using Microsoft Word or WordPerfect; do not use LaTeX or TeX. Prepare tables using Microsoft Word or Excel. Save figure files at the highest resolution possible. Cover Letter

Provide the corresponding author's mailing address, telephone and fax numbers, and e-mail address in the cover letter. The letter should also state that the work has not been previously published and, if the manuscript is accepted for publication, that the author(s) agree(s) to transfer the copyright to the Regents of the University of Colorado.

Manuscript Title Page - The corresponding author's name and postal and e-mail

addresses, and the names and postal addresses of all co-authors must appear on the first page.

Abstracts - Abstracts accompany all manuscripts and should not exceed 200 words. Text - Follow format and style of sections and headings in current

issues of the journal, using bold and italics to distinguish levels of heads in the style used in the journal. Do not use a word-processing program's "style" functions to designate subheadings; all text should be "normal" style. Avoid footnotes. Cite all tables and figures in the text in numerical order. Use the metric system, preferably Système International d'Unites (SI). Double-line formulas are not acceptable in the body of the text; use a solidus or negative exponent. Number and cite equations consecutively. For general matters of style refer to The Chicago Manual of Style (15th ed.) (2003, Chicago and London: University of Chicago Press) and Scientific Style and Format (7th ed.) (2006, New York: Rockefeller University Press for Council of Science Editors). Acknowledgments - This section appears after the main part of the

text and before the reference list and is used to credit assistance, grants and other financial awards, and the work of the peer reviewers.

References - Use the format of current issues of the journal. All names of authors and editors must be last names first followed by initials. Italicize the names of journals and books. Spell out the names of all journal and other serial titles. Include the names of editors of collective works. In the text, cite papers having more than two authors as, e.g., Smith et al., but in the reference list show all the authors' names. Check carefully all references for accuracy before submitting the manuscript; mistakes are common. Also, check to make certain that all citations have a reference, and all references have a citation; inconsistencies are common.

Appendices - Appendices include lengthy statistical data or text that is subordinate to the main part of the manuscript. Appendices should be placed in separate computer files.

Tables - Separate tables from text and place them in one or more separate computer files. Design each of them to fit onto one page of the journal, if possible.

Figure Captions - Number all figure captions and place them after the reference list in the computer file with the main part of the text.

Illustrations - Refer to line drawings and photographs as Figures. All figures should have the first author's name and figure number adjacent to the figure; "top" should be indicated. Plan figures with the journal page dimensions in mind: 1 column - 8.5 cm (20 picas); 1.5 columns - 12.5 cm (30 picas); 2 columns - 17.5 cm (41.5 picas); depth 22.75 cm (54 picas), allowing space for the caption. Maps must meet the standards used in current issues of the journal; include a scale bar, latitude and longitude, and a north arrow. No letter or symbol should be less than 1 mm in height after reduction. The largest letters and numbers should usually not be more than three to four times the size of the smallest letters and numbers. Authors must cover the entire cost of color figures; contact the Managing Editor for details.

Manuscript Submission Submit all manuscripts through the journal's Web site unless you do

not have access to the Internet.

If the Author Does Not Have Access to the Internet Mail the manuscript computer files on a CD to AAAR, 450 UCB,

Boulder, CO 80309-0450, U.S.A., or transmit the files by one or more e-mail messages to the attention of the Managing Editor at AAAR@ Colorado.edu, and we will submit the files for you. If the Author Has Access to the Internet Go to http://INSTAAR.Colorado.edu/AAAR/. Select Manuscript

Submission from the choices at the top. Click on Submit Manuscript, which is located about halfway down the screen. At the login screen, select a Login Name and Password to enter the AllenTrack manuscript submission site. After login, click on Manuscript Submission Instructions for detailed information on the procedures involved. Other Considerations

Manuscript Reviews All manuscripts are peer reviewed. The review period is usually at

least three months. Check on the progress of your manuscript by visiting AllenTrack (http://instaar.allentrack2.net). Proofs

Proof pages are sent to authors via e-mail as PDF files. PDF files of proof pages may not be reproduced or distributed.

Charges To help cover ever-increasing costs, the journal has a mandatory

$200 processing fee for all manuscripts that are accepted for publication. Payment of this fee entitles the author to a free, one-year subscription, including Internet access to all volumes of the journal. If the fee presents a hardship, authors may request a waiver.

Authors are expected to pay page charges of $85 per page, or some fraction ofthat amount if the full amount cannot be paid, before the paper has been published. If the charges present a hardship, authors may request a waiver.

The current rate for color figures is $300 per journal page. Authors can limit color charges by planning ahead; ideally, color figures appear sequentially and are drafted so two or more can be placed on a single journal page. Reprints

A price schedule for reprints will be sent to the corresponding author before publication. Copyright

Copyright transfer forms will be sent to the author if and when the manuscript is accepted for publication.
