District News Submitted by: Kyle Cronan, Superintendent/7-12 Principal
Referendum
Port Edwards School District has experienced an unprecedented growth in
enrollment over the past four years at approximately 20%. This tremendous
growth has revitalized our schools, however; state imposed revenue limits have
not kept pace with this enrollment trend. As a result, the District actually has a
lower revenue limit than it did back in 2013 when the 3 year average enrollment was nearly
equal to today. To compound the matter, our current 3 year average is 409 students, but our
actual students in seats enrollment to start the school year was 443. Back in 2013, the actual
students in seats enrollment was 391. The state has provisions that hold schools fiscally
harmless for declining enrollment, but no provisions for when a school experiences rapid
growth in enrollment.
The state funding formula does not keep up with districts
that experience rapid growth and the same formula has
not had an inflationary increase since 2014. In fact, the
District this year received $240 less per pupil in the
formula than it did in 2010. This year alone, the District
has spent over $250,000 for additional staffing, supplies
and furnishings as a result of our increased enrollment.
Further, when the District was declining, cuts were made
in many areas as a matter of necessity to try to balance the
budget. Curriculum development has been put on hold,
maintenance projects deferred when possible and other
upgrades to items such as technology delayed. The School
Board put a referendum question on the ballot to provide
stability to the District so that students and staff can
concentrate on the heart of the matter...Education!
On Tuesday, April 2, 2019 the spring election will occur
and I want to encourage our citizens to vote. No matter what way you lean on issues or certain
candidates, the ability to vote is the key to a thriving democracy.
2nd Semester Grades
At this time of the year, it is vital for students and parents to continue to monitor progress at
school. With spring can come many distractions from school. Although we do not have a 2nd
semester parent-teacher conference day scheduled, be sure to contact your child’s teachers if
you have any questions about grades or progress. Parents and students who have access to the
web have the ability to check student grades and progress through the use of Infinite Campus
which is accessible on the district website (pesd.k12.wi.us). If you do not have the individual
login information necessary for Infinite Campus, please contact our counseling office at 715-
887-9000 ext. 106 for assistance. JEMS/HS offers open library before school and after school.
In addition, during the Blackhawk Advisory Period, students have the ability to see their
individual teachers during this time most weeks Tuesday through Friday.

4K-6 SCHOOL NEWS Submitted by: Cara Christy, 4K-6 Principal
After a long snowy winter that didn’t seem to end, spring is finally here.
Even though it is only April, we are already planning for summer school and
the end of the school year. This time of year our staff not only thinks about
the current school year, but we look forward to planning for next school year
as well.
An important part of preparing our students for next school year is making sure they continue
to learn and grow over the summer. Consider setting a reading goal for your student. It could
be a daily, weekly, or summer-long goal. Continuing to read over the summer will help your
child minimize the loss of skills, also called the “summer slide”.
Another way to keep our students thriving academically is to sign them up for Port Elementary
Summer School. This year, the elementary school will host summer school from 8am-3pm
from June 10th - June 28th. Once again, we are offering a wide variety of courses, and students
will be able to take up to four classes each day. These classes range from reading and math to
crafts or fishing or cooking. We are so fortunate to have wonderful teachers who have planned
some amazing activities for our students. There are still a few spaces available, so if you
haven’t signed up for summer school yet, please call or stop in the elementary office as soon as
possible to reserve your spot!
During summer school at the elementary building, we are also serving free breakfast and lunch
to all students. Breakfast will be served from 7:30-8:00am and lunch will be served from 11:15-
11:45am during June 10th-28th. All Port Edwards students and their siblings under the age of
18 are welcome to participate.
In addition, our morning reading program will continue throughout summer school. Parents
must sign their students into the library after the doors open at 7am. Students will have an
opportunity to do crafts, read, and eat free breakfast before their summer school classes begin.
Once again, please consider signing up your child for our summer school sessions. Guaranteed,
our students will have so much fun, they won’t even realize they’re doing summertime
learning!
Parents,
Check out the Elementary Summer School
brochures that came home with your students the first week
of March. Classes will be filled first come, first served, so
sign up soon!
Summer School will, tentatively, be held
June 10 – June 28, 2019.
The following is the president’s letter from the Port Edwards Education Foundation 2018
Annual Report. The report is provided to our current year donors, recent year donors and
Blackhawk Scramble participants and sponsors. Our sincere thanks for your continued
support of the Foundation. To view the complete report, contact current Board President
Corey Searles.
Submitted by: Karen Thiel
The Port Edwards Education Foundation experienced another great year and
successful fund drive thanks to your generous donations. We organized a
well-attended Blackhawk Golf Scramble in June, and funded fourteen
enrichment grants totaling $23,014.
On a more personal note, for the past 23 years I have enjoyed a
wonderful journey with the Port Edwards Education Foundation. On this trip
I have seen Port Edwards staff, students and Foundation Board members get
excited about educational projects created to enrich the learning experiences
of our students.
Over the years, the Foundation Board has raised over a quarter of a
million dollars to support these projects. I have no doubt that students and staff have enjoyed
and learned from these grants.
Thank you for allowing me to share this wonderful journey. I will continue as a
member of the board and am looking forward to working under the leadership of our new
Board President Corey Searles.
Sincerely,
Ed Heuer, Past Foundation President

Port Edwards Education Foundation Awards 2019 Grants Submitted by: Karen Isaacson – Grants Committee Chairperson
Since 1996 the Port Edwards Education Foundation has been an integral part of our educational
community making a difference for Port Edwards students. The Foundation’s Board of Directors is
comprised of community members, the district’s superintendent, and two teacher reps. Through our
fundraising efforts, we provide money to enhance the educational experiences of students in the Port
Edwards School District. Most of the funds we raise come from our annual fund drive in the fall and our
annual golf outing.
Every year the Port Edwards Education Foundation is honored to offer the opportunity for staff
members in the district to apply for grants to be used in the classroom to benefit our students. All of the
funds raised this year were available for these grants.
Since our first grant was given, we have awarded over $287,260 to teachers and staff members
who have come up with innovative ideas to expand our students’ horizons.
The Foundation deeply appreciates the staff members who have put in the time and effort to
write the grant proposals and provide these wonderful opportunities for our students. We are most
thankful for the generosity of our donors and encourage everyone to help us continue our support of
these extended learning activities for the students in the Port Edwards School District.
This year, because of the generous support from our donors and our Golf Scramble, the
Foundation was able to award seven grants that totaled $19,730 to the following recipients:
Vinyl Cutting Sign Machine and Starter Supplies: Steve Birno - The grant would be used to
purchase a vinyl cutting machine, the software to operate the machine, and the tools/supplies needed to
implement this machine. This machine creates high-quality "stickers" by first developing an image on
computer software. Then, using CNC automated technology, the machine cuts out the images on vinyl
sticker material. Finally, transfer tape is applied to the vinyl, so that the image can be placed onto other
objects.
Audio-Visual in High School Gym: Jeanne Bruener, Sanata Lau - The grant would be used to
purchase a projector, power projector lowering platform, power screen, wireless HDMI connector,
electrical set up cost and cabling for the High School gym. This will make workshops, speakers, and
other presentations possible for all stakeholders in a large group gathering format.
Manage, Move, Motivate, and Measure: Tina McLaughlin - This grant will be used to purchase:
42 Fitstep Pro Pedometers, four Fitstep Pro Data Readers, and two Quick ID Pedometer Storage
Systems. The three primary uses of the pedometers will be to 1) teach about physical activity, 2)
enhance instruction, and 3) to provide accountability. All data recorded during class can be uploaded
digitally in less than five seconds and personalized student reports can be printed or sent home to
parents.
Tablets for Culinary: Marissa Rebischke -This grant would be used to purchase four Kindle Fire HD
tablets to be utilized in each of the four kitchens in the Family and Consumer Sciences classroom.
Students can use the tablet to find recipes on various sites. Students will also be able to use the tablets to
journal/log each lab, stream instructional videos during labs, and create their own instructional videos.
They would also be able to access several cooking apps.
Technology Equipment for John Edwards FBLA: Gary Spencer - This grant will be used to
purchase two Dell laptops and two NEC portable projectors for FBLA competition. As this is a regional
event, many students compete throughout the day and many different events are competing at once in
different rooms. Therefore, two sets of equipment are needed because each group competing will need
its own set of equipment.
Making “The SMART Way of Doing Things” Even Better: Beth Willcome - This grant would
purchase an audio-visual presentation cart with locking storage and a longer VGA to VGA cable. Last
Blackhawk Bulletin April 2019 Page 6
Blackhawk Bulletin April 2019 Page 7
year’s grant for a SMART document camera really made a difference in the way material is delivered
during instructional time. Currently, it sits on the teacher's desk which restricts her movement during the
lesson. Having the cart will make delivery much easier and allow the instructor more freedom of
movement to work with students.
Captivating Kids with Coding: Kristen Winters - This grant will be used to purchase 10 Lego
Education WeDo 2.0 core sets. Students will explore, create and share in 17 projects that capture
motivation and engagement. Each phase explores Next Generation Science Standards including solving
real-world problems, building, programming, modifying designs and documenting results. Students will
ignite their curiosity through discovery-based learning.
GaGa Ball Pit: Tim Martin - This grant will purchase the mater ials for a 25-foot octagon GaGa ball
pit for the students at the Elementary school. This is an outdoor exercise game for all ages. What makes
GaGa Ball great is that kids of any size, age, or athletic ability can play and have the same chance to win
as anybody else.
Kindred Community: Jeanne Bruener, Tim Miller - This grant will be used to purchase
Adirondack chair materials, banners and display cording. The Ecology Club and Skills USA members
will partner with the buildings history/social studies classes in contributing to the celebration. The
Ecology Club and Skills USA groups will construct and paint Adirondack chairs in a way that represents
their roles in the school. After completion, the chairs will be sold in a silent auction. The profits will be
used to begin funding an All-Class reunion to celebrate the 100th Anniversary of the Alexander
Auditorium.
Free Choice Reading: Rachel Frizzell - This grant will be used to purchase beginner Spanish
novels, a Bilingual classroom carpet, and subscriptions to Spanish classroom magazines. Items will
enhance the Free Choice reading opportunities for students in beginning Spanish classes. This project
was started with more advanced students this year thanks to last year’s PEEF Grant. The Bilingual
Classroom Carpet will allow for increased integration of the alphabet and add to the immersion of
Spanish in the classroom.
A Taste of What’s Possible: Jeanne Bruener, Shane Steltenpohl - This grant will purchase a
professional vacuum sealer, various sized bags, a small locking freezer, and a blanching pot. The
Ecology Club will collaborate with the sixth-grade science class beginning with orienting students to our
greenhouse/garden space. They will then work together to start seeds and plant the campus garden. The
produce grown, and that purchased from local farms, will be preserved for future use for the Ecology
Club’s holiday meal, Earth Day lunch, and cafeteria meals.
#12 Classroom Self-Regulation for 1st Grade: Kala Dorshorst, Jennifer Pfefferkorn - The grant
would purchase materials to create a Self-Regulation Station in the 1st-grade classroom area for students.
Some students are eager to learn, but become aggressive and anxious when faced with a challenging or
frustrating situation. These students need to be taught basic social skills and to have a place away from
whatever has triggered them to regain their self-control. When they need to take a "break”, these zones
and support materials will help students stay in the classroom, get their emotions in check, and return to
learning.minutes.
Hands-on Inquiry in Physiology: Kerry Doran - This grant will be used to purchase
technology equipment to enrich 3D and virtual learning experiences for Port students. Students
will experience hands-on learning through the use of higher technology applications and
resources. Microbiology will print, paint and display microbes on scale models. Forensic
Science will take microscope pictures on their own phones to analyze hair and fibers. Anatomy
& Physiology will engineer, online-test, and build prosthetic arms. Botany & Ecology will
prepare and display natural specimens for the classroom and the ELC.

Health Update: Measles Outbreak
Dear Parents and Guardians,
The CDC has reported an outbreak of measles in the U.S. currently involving ten states. The
Port Edwards School District would like to take this opportunity to provide some information
about measles and how to prevent it.
Measles is the most deadly of all childhood rash/fever illnesses. It is a serious infection that
causes fever, cough, a rash, sore eyes, and occasionally dangerous complications. Measles
spreads very easily, so it is important to protect against infection.
Getting vaccinated is the best way to prevent measles. Specifically, to have the best protection
against measles, two doses of MMR vaccine are required. As part of the childhood
immunization program, the first dose of vaccine is required between 12 -15 months and the
second dose before entering school, at 4 – 6 years.
It is important for you to check your child’s immunization records to make sure he/she has
received two doses of MMR vaccine. You may check your child’s immunization record by
logging onto the Wisconsin Immunization Registry (WIR).Your family health care provider
should also have your child’s immunization record.
Measles can spread easily to and from unimmunized children. In addition to being at risk for
getting sick if exposed to measles, children with one or zero doses of MMR will not be able to
come to school for two weeks if exposed.
If you believe that your child needs the MMR vaccine, please call your health care provider or
The South Wood County Health Department at 715-421-8911.
If your child does develop a rash with a fever, they should not attend school and you should
call your health care provider. It is important to call the clinic or hospital before taking your
child in. Please remember – the best way to protect your child is to ensure that they have had
two doses of MMR.
Please feel free to call us with any questions you may have.
Thank you,

12th Annual PI Day Submitted by: Deb Martin & Tami Griffith
On the afternoon of March 14, 2019, all 9-12 grade students celebrated Pi Day.
Mathematically, Pi is the ratio of a circle’s circumference to its diameter, approximately 3.14,
thus the celebration on, or as close to, March 14 as possible. Students spent the afternoon on
Pi Day doing a variety of activities associated with the number Pi. The Pre-calculus students
and Calculus students were the “teachers” of the activities for the rest of the student body.
Activities included this year were Pi Day Pi Pong, Pi Frisbee, Pi Bingo, Pi Day Relay Race,
Pi Lightning, and a Pi Day Crime Scene Card Game. All of the activities had to incorporate
the number Pi in them somehow before playing the games. Throughout the afternoon,
students were also treated to Pi Day treats of pies and cupcakes that students had brought in.
A big “Thank You” goes out to all of the students who bought or baked the treats. Special
thanks to Mrs. Rebischke and some of her students for all of their work with the treats and
helping to keep this part running smoothly. Thanks also goes out to our math department of
Mrs. Griffith and Mrs. Martin for all of their hard work in coordinating this effort.
