January 31, 2021 “The people were astonished at his teaching, for he taught them as one having authority and not as the scribes,” words from the Gospel for today. What does it mean to have authority? If we look at the etymology of the word, authority comes from Middle English: from Old French autorite, from Latin auctoritas, from auctor “originator, promoter.” The one who has authority is the one who by his very nature can originate or promote a certain teaching. Obviously when we consider who Jesus is, and how as God he is the ultimate originator and promoter of anything that exists, we can see how his authoritative way of speaking was so unique! Just think about it: No one has ever spoken the way Jesus spoke, since no one can have authority over the entire world, universe, and creation. Question for meditation: What is the main obstacle for you in considering the authority of Christ through his Church, through Scripture and Tradition? Reflection for parents with children: Help your children understand that your authority over them is because you are called to be the best promoter of their well-being. “La gente estaba maravillada de su enseñanza, porque enseñaba con autoridad y no como los escribas,” palabras del evangelio de hoy. ¿Qué quiere decir tener autoridad? Si miramos la etimología de esa palabra, autoridad viene del inglés medieval: del viejo francés autorite, del latin auctoritas, de auctor “originador, promotor.” El que tiene autoridad es el que por su propia naturaleza puede originar o promover una cierta enseñanza. Obviamente, cuando consideramos quien es Jesús, y como Dios es el originador por excelencia y el promotor de todo lo que existe, ¡podemos entender por qué su manera de hablar con autoridad era tan única! Piensa en esto: Nadie nunca ha hablado en la manera que Jesús habló, ya que nadie puede tener entera autoridad sobre el mundo, el universo, y la creación. Pregunta para meditar: ¿Cuál es tu mayor obstáculo para aceptar la autoridad de Jesús?
